Not great. This place gets the highest review score in Wantage, so we gave it a whirl on a Saturday night. There was one other table of 4 in an otherwise empty restaurant. Despite this, no staff approached us for 20 minutes and we had to ask if we could place our orders in the end. The food arrived half an hour later. I had King Prawn Biryani, the other half a Sag Aloo. Both were cold. Mine had lots of rice, a small bowl of biryani, 3 or 4 king prawns but MOUNTAINS of peas - not an ingredient I've even noticed in 35 years of eating the dish. Both dishes were cold, but at least the other half's tasted of Sag Aloo - mine was more like gravy than biryani. The chapatis were very thick, floury and salty and as such, inedible. We were given no opportunity to comment on the food and indeed had to approach the kitchen area to pay, such was the absence of any service. Easily the worst Indian meal I've ever had, with the worst service too.

As newcomers to Wantage we are trying out all the local restaurants and we booked Sylheti Spice after reading the reviews. We ordered a variety of dishes a very interesting interpretation of Indian food, which were very tasty. We especially liked the Peshwari naan bread! The great thing about this restaurant is one can bring one’s own drinks of any type. We noticed one of the diners went backwards and forwards with glasses of beer from the Swan pub across the road! Brilliant idea. We really enjoyed our evening and we will definitely go back and try some more different dishes.

Special shout out to Silheti tonight! Their food is always amazing but due to this tonight’s wait was longer than their usual. (We were warned when ordering that there would be a little bit of a wait which is fine!) Upon arrival our delivery driver could not have been more apologetic for our slightly delayed food which was absolutely worth it! It was piping hot and flavoursome as always. Thank you from two happy regulars!

It's weird that they don't sell any drinks at all, even soft drinks!! I didn't realise before I visited as a friend had booked it. We had to walk across the road to the nearby pub, get drinks there and ask to borrow their glasses to take back to the restaurant. You then have to return them yourselves. I guess if I'd known beforehand I could have taken my own drinks, but honestly I'd prefer to just go to the other Indian restaurant in Wantage instead.

Hidden gem. Not as snazzy as other Indian restaurants, but authentic, very good food, reasonably priced and is not licensed, so you can take your own drinks (they also don't do soft drinks). The pub opposite are happy for you to take drinks over. They have wine glasses on the table and will open your beer. This also keeps your bill down massively. There were regulars in there when we visited which is a good sign. Friendly service. 👍👍 they will be doing takeaway during lockdown.

I’ve eaten here several times & the food is always delicious. I personally like the Sylheti Special Spicy mix with rice & keema nan bread as it’s very tasty & not hot. However, if you do like hot dishes they have plenty to choose from. The price of food here is very reasonable & you can take your own alcoholic or non-alcoholic beverages, which helps keep the cost down as there are a few local supermarkets (Sainsbury’s & Waitrose) nearby to purchase your own drinks. I’d recommend this place as the staff & service is very friendly. 10/10

The food was excellent as always. But I did use the website to attempt to make a reservation a few days earlier but didn't get a response. So I ended up going down to the restaurant on the day we were due to eat there (Monday 11th November) but at 2pm there was nobody around so I put a note through the letter box including my mobile contact number. In fairness I did get 2 calls from them which I missed because there was a potential problem due to a staff shortage. So they needed to close by 9pm. Rather than cancelling I decided we could probably get to the restaurant a bit earlier which we did (7:45) and indeed we were all fed and watered by 8:55 and back in the Swan pub over the road. So no damage done but maybe something a bit more pro-active on the website could have prevented that potential problem.

This is a hit and miss Indian restaurant - sometimes it's good, sometimes it's bad. We live locally, so use this if we want a delivery. However, I was really disappointed with last night's delivery (Chicken Madras & a Chicken Vindaloo) - last Sunday I had the Madras & it was soooo nice, one of the best Indian's I've had in ages - the comparison to last nights could not have been more different. This was a very watered down Madras gravy with a few bits of pale chicken floating - there was no sign of any veg or coriander and was runny as, the chicken had definately not been marinated and cooked in the tandoori oven as per the Sunday version - has put me off using for a while.

The vegetable pakoras are one of the best I have tasted. The curry was also very tasty and had a good amount of meat to veg quantity. You get free poppadoms, onion salad and 10% off with collection. We came here as we had been told by a friend that the food was good. We were early (around 6.30pm) and we were the only people there. The menu is good and had a few dishes that were new to me. We ordered 3 soft drinks and the staff apologised that they had almost run out of lemonade so wouldn't charge us for providing 3/4 full glass. Very kind but bemusing as there are shops nearby that sell lemonade. Then some other diners arrived, with beers in hand. I'm guessing then that the expectation is that you buy drinks at the Swan pub opposite and take them with you to dinner. Not really sure...Anyway the food was very good. Service was good and we'll most likely go there again before too long.

The fact that you get to take your own drink helps make this an inexpensive restaurant - poppadum's, starter, mains, sides, rice etc for less than £35.00!The only thing I would say is the food could be a tad hotter in tempreture.

There are only two Indian restaurants in Wantage and this is the better of the two. We had pre booked a table but upon us arriving we could see there was a large party in at the same time. Our table was positioned in the corner of the restaurant and we could just squeeze in and be seated. This seemed to be odd as there did seem to be plenty of space within other areas of the restaurant. We were greeted and served by the owner - manager who was extremely friendly and welcoming. We weren't rushed and decided to have a number of starters and mains. The popadoms were slightly chewy which leads me to believe they weren't that fresh. The accompanying Chutneys and sauces were very fresh and tasty. We ordered two starters, tandoori chicken and an Indian lentil fritter. The tandoori chicken was cooked to perfection and was extremely tasty and juicy. The lentil fritter was quite bland and tasteless. We then ordered three main dishes, a prawn and spinach dish (recommended by the manager) a chicken Dansak and a tandoori mixed grill. In addition to this we also ordered coconut basmati rice, plain basmati rice, two nan breads, and a side dish of cauliflower and spinach. It was a bit of a mixed response with regards to the mains. The Dansak tasted great. The recommended prawn and spinach dish was again quite bland and sad to say we believe the spinach was frozen and not fresh. The tandoori mixed grill was nice and fresh but seemed to be lacking a garnish. In other Indian restaurants you often get onions and peppers as a garnish. The rice dishes were excellent however the nan breads were average. It was great being able to bring in our own alcohol and also good that the Sylheti sold soft drinks. We believe the Sylheti is the better of the two Indian restaurants in Wantage and would defiantly return again.
