Swan Hotel in Dumfries & Galloway

Our favourite place to eat when holidaying this direction. The food is always delicious and there's plenty of it! It isn't cheap per se but you get what you pay for and we think this is more than worth it! Our 2 year old daughter loved the small play area in the grounds and was also delighted with a lolly after her meal! (She enjoyed her main meal too!) The staff are very friendly, helpful and welcoming. We will definitely back when we're back in the area!

A very beautiful pub very clean and warm , very comfy and staff are friendly and very helpful Food was so tasty and hot and plenty of it too , we didn't have to wait long either , the pudding were delicious, I would recommend this beautiful pub ,we will definitely be visiting again when we next come up from Bournemouth .

Loving the new menu, the pan roasted chicken supreme from the new menu is hands down the best dish Iv had at the swan and quite possibly in Dumfries. Our 3 year old loves the climbing frame and garden, really nice family atmosphere. Staff excellent as always, shoutout to Gail and team. Well done folks. Rab

Can’t fault the food. That got it from 1 start to 2 stars. Arrived to a very annoyed looking bar staff girl who seemed pissed if that we didn’t book before hand (was out walking and not from area so only discovered it on the off chance ) inside was cold so we eventually moved outside to a used table and waited in the sunshine. Lovely garden in the sun. Went to the bar to order (again never been here before ) and told it was table service only. 35 min to ask did we want a drink. My friend had to ask for water as he was very dry in throat as it was a warm day. 45 min later food order taken. Like I say can’t fault the food but the staff defo need customer service training & more of them (only 2 and about 20 tables ) to run it. Inside was practically empty so no idea why the fuss over lack of booking was made . Probably won’t be back because of the staff which is a shame as the food was really nice ! Plz note if your like me and don’t know the area how are you meant to book something that you didn’t know was there till you went a long walk with friends in the sunshine ? On nice days they should expect many walks ins especially in Easter holidays !

We returned once more, for another beautiful lunch with our friends. A stunning day and a wonderful new menu for us to delight in. My friends had the new chicken dish, my husband had the chilli and chips and I had the new pork with peppercorn sauce, mash and superb vegetables. It was all served really well, even though the poor chef must have been run off his feet, as next to us was a table for 14 people! The chef worked miracles and we all enjoyed our meals very much. It was our friends first visit to the Swan and our second. We are very much looking forward to visiting again, to try some more, as it was very difficult to decide which of the lovely meals to choose. Thank you again for a lovely lunch!

Lovely area, nice pub but the food and service let it down. Staff were too busy we were greeted with we have a table but you'll have to wait to be served, fortunately it wasn't that bad a wait, the food was described by my other half as "bookers best". I ordered drinks with the main course at the end of the course I went to bar, the server had thrown her order pad away and the drinks order with it!!! She did appologise. Maybe be better on a week day rather than Saturday.

Second visit here albeit 2 years apart visiting family in the area. Greeted on arrival and shown to pre booked table. As it was valentines weekend the tables were decorated with paper hearts confetti style. Service was excellent - very polite and not in your face and stood out for us. We had a mixture of dishes including from the light bites. All were really enjoyable and good value for money. Having had Sunday lunch last time we were here and now from the regular menu I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend. Parking in the car park opposite is available and an outside beer garden in the summer.

Fantastic service, staff couldn't do enough for us. Pre booked and visited as 4 mum's with 4 babies all under 1 year. We were brilliantly looked after, and made so comfortable and welcome. Food was excellent, and my 8 month old son literally wolfed the macaroni cheese down! No dietary requirements for our group but plenty of options if you do. Will definitely be back.

Always a great meal in the Swan. Service is always efficient and the staff are friendly and welcoming. The interior could do with a refurb as it is starting to tire. The colour scheme is a little bold and I think something more traditional and cosy would really set this establishment off.

We have visited the swan on numerous occasions when holidaying in the area so we went again this time.it’s a lovely atmosphere,and the food is always spot on and the staff are lovely we have never been disappointed. The only thing you may want to do is book a table so you’re not disappointed

An Englander crossing the border for a nearby wedding looking for a relaxing bite to eat. Saw my ever familiar steak guiness pies, gammon steaks and burgers but took the decision to go for the haggis wrapped chicken with mash veg and whisky gravy. A lovely tasting hearty meal. The rest of the family had a selection of pork belly, nice crispy cracking with a moist tender meat, then a fresh tasting lentil & spinach daal meal. Some lovely food for our walk back into the town. I can imagine The Swan being the sort of place where you can call in on a nice river walk and enjoy a bite to eat and a relaxing drink. The staff and landlord were attentive and friendly. Just wanted to leave a quick review after a superb meal. My wife and I visited on a Thursday evening and were greeted by great staff. Our meal was superb and great portion sizes accompanied by great prices. We'll 100% be returning. Our new favourite Dumfries. Restaurant!!

Mrs birthday so took her here for lunch. This place had a great reparation but shut over Covid and a new management team took it over and it’s getting its reparation back and I can see why. We rocked up with no booking but they managed to get us a table and swiftly ordered drinks for the two of us. The menu is not your big standard Gastro-Pub one but a delightful mix of lots of cultures and food. The Mrs ordered a Prawn cocktail and I went for Chicken pakora, both of which arrive quickly. The pakora was very nice and well presented and all in all enjoyable the Mrs felt the same about her prawn cocktail. For mains Mrs went for Balmoral Chicken - chicken breast stuffed with haggis - and I had the Lamb Keema - lamb mince curry - with half and half - a Dumfries thing with half chips and half rice. The Keema was superb and very very tasteful, highly recommended! The bill wasn’t too heavy and we both left happy and full. I will go back to sample the rest of this amazing pubs menu. Lovely family oriented place for a meal, the food was delicious, staff were very attentive and friendly, nothing was any bother, definitely recommend anyone looking for a meal out, can also bring your dog along (depending on specific doggy friendly tables being available) lovely busy atmosphere, will be back

Been visiting this establishment since early 1980s. On this occasion found that there were no prices on the drinks menu, fortunately prices charged were not too high but it is nice to see what you are ordering. Rice with the sweet and sour chicken quite cold, skin-on fries with both dishes not great. Sweet and sour sauce, not great either, like a runny tomato sauce, no real sour taste at all. Unfortunate but won't be returning soon.

Had an idyllic lunch here one sunny day. Sat outside in glorious shady garden, view out to the boats by the river. A modern pub, not trying to be olde worlde, but good at being clean cut, efficient and modern. Friendly staff, good beer and good food. Choice of clearly marked gluten free options. Also look at the junk/antique emporium just along the road.

Visited for lunch whilst out walking on Holiday. The food and service were excellent and the staff very friendly. Can recommend the BBQ burger and the Dahl, probably the best we’ve eaten and the coffee was really good. The dog was also made very welcome. Highly recommended.

We have visited the Swan several times over the last few years and it has never disappointed. Staff are always friendly and very attentive, the food is amazing. I chose fish and chips this time, which was cooked perfectly and just the right sized portion, my husband had the rib eye steak and after trying a bite myself it just melted in the mouth, hats off to the chef!! We were the last couple out but were never made to feel that we were lingering and holding the girls up whilst they were trying to close. Would definitely recommend the Swan for anyone looking for reasonably priced good home cooked food

We visited the Swan for a birthday lunch recently and thought it was excellent. The staff were friendly and the service was good. We both had a starter. I chose the crab spring roll from the valentines menu. It was lovely. I have to say the Haggis pakora (which I sneaked a wee taste off) were delicious too, I will order them next time. Our main courses were also excellent. We both agreed the chips were outstanding. Really crisp, and they stayed that way as we ate the meal. Both the haddock and steak pie were lovely. I thought the portions were just the right size. If I hadn't had a starter I'd have been able to finish mine. A lovely meal all round, and we'll definitely go back

Huge menu selection, you’d have to be super fussy to struggle to select something! I had a chicken and bacon wrap from the specials menu, which was beautiful. Too big a portion would be my only criticism. Owners are lovely and their staff are equally friendly, and accommodating.

Great food. Starter size of nachos should be a sharer. It would have done me as a main, albeit extremely tasty. Main course of chicken stuffed with haggis, great to see “proper meal” on a menu. Home cooked and not a burger or deep fried from a packet. If there are meals like that on a menu, I would always return. On the pricey side for a couple to have a meal, would benefit from a set menu for a set price.

The food was just fantastic! It way exceeded my expectations and was the best food I have had in Dumfries for many years. We will most definitely be back. The staff were really nice and restaurant and toilets super clean.

Upon entering the restaurant was as cosy as i remembered from my last visit several years ago. We were placed at a window table which was great. First hiccup was I’m a cider drinker and on the cider menu it only had a bottled section all being fruit or 0% which I’m not fond of. Had I not asked I wouldn’t have noticed that cider draught was mentioned in draught beer section. Maybe that should be reviewed as I had no intentions of looking at beers being a cider drinker. The next wee fumble was when we looked at the menu and upon approach to take our order we were told the simple words. Beef is unavailable but we have pork. We did not have a clue what she was talking about and assumed she had told us something that was meant for another table. Was only after ordering and needing to use the toilet that we spotted a specials board with roast dinners and other options on them that we had never been told about or made aware of as it also isn’t mentioned on the menu about Sunday roasts. Would have been nice to have been told about this option. The next hiccup i encountered was the dessert menu. We were told no cheesecake left. That was fine cos I only ever order fudgecake or cheesecake when I’m out so the server came back to get our order and I asked for fudgecake. To be told sorry we have none. So I decided to pass on desert. everyone else at our table ordered and ate there’s. So around 20-30 mins had passed and we got up to pay and leave. We were the last table out and I know I seen cheesecake sitting behind of the counter so I assumed one of the staff reserved a slice for themselves which I found rather annoying knowing I ddnt get it instead. For my main I ordered the Katsu chicken. Chicken rice and popadoms were nice. Chips were the best Iv had in a long time. So crispy and fluffy. Top marks there. However the Katsu curry sauce was watery and bland. Being out for a birthday meal I did not want to make a scene so I ate up. But I definitely think the sauce needs improvement. Staff were nice and smily but felt like they were lacking on some simple aspects of service as once again we were on the premises for an hour and a half and we weren’t asked if we would like another drink at any point either after the initial pint. Would I come back….. probably but not in a hurry.

We booked a table for myself and my family, as it was my birthday. This was our first meal at the restaurant since the new owners took over, and we were so glad to see the place so busy. Quite glad we booked in advance. We were met by the owner, who took us to our table. The staff were attentive, gave us plenty of time to chose what we wanted to eat, and the food was amazing. The waitress came and took our desert orders and had noticed a birthday card sitting on our table, so asked who's birthday it was. My pudding arrived with a wee candle in it, what a kind gesture! Having being a regular more than a decade ago I have only been once in the last few years and today I asked myself why I’m not there more often. Parking area, outside eating, warm welcome as you enter, drinks order taken on arrival and delivered quickly whilst you look at the varied menu. We ordered pub food burger and chips with a couple of extras Delilah and filling. We saved space for desert Stick toffee pudding looked delicious and the banoffee Pie was freshly made a something to write home about. Highly recommend
