Swan Hotel Bar & Grill in Maldon

Went with friends for the Wednesday burger (offer) night, after being told their Swan burgers (with cheese and bacon) were fantastic. Well they were right, between us we had various burgers, with chips, fries, onion rings and all were a very good size and tasty. Also at £10 (offer) they were good value. Seating and service was good also. Overall great and will be back for another burger.

Very enjoyable stay. Staff were very friendly and helpful. Jan in particular was an absolute diamond. Rooms were very clean and tidy.

Brilliant lunch meal for two. Lovely food, and the staff are excellent. Just excellent, will definitely go again.

Lovely decor and atmosphere, delicious Wild mushroom Tagliatelle😋 friendly helpful attentive staff, also free parking and could leave my car to do a bit of shopping after lunch. Highly recommended.

This is a very friendly venue. The staff were young, but really nice and friendly. We came with our puppy and had to eat in the bar area, but that is to be expected, and the staff and patrons were so friendly. As for the food, well to be honest it was fantastic, really nicely presented and scrumptious. Our compliments to the chef.

We chose The Swan because we wanted to walk into town, and my goodness what a good choice that was. It was the very best Sunday Lunch we have had for a long time, with the world record biggest Yorkshire Pudding !! Vegetables were cooked beautifully, and the meat was excellent. Cannot recommend this highly enough, although several people were turned away as they were fully booked. Lovely young staff, will definitely visit again and very happy to recommend.

There was a queue for Mrs Salisbury's so we went here, as we thought that we would get served quicker. Boy, were we mistaken. There were very few people there, but we had to wait an hour for a chicken salad and a burger (with others that came after being served before us). Burger was fine, but the chicken was over-cooked and covered in burnt bits. Caesar "dressing" was some shop bought mayonnaise. Not good.

Went for lunch today, staff were friendly, ordered food but after 45 mins hadn't arrived. Asked how long food would be and were told they were about to start cooking it!!. We visited here in the summer and was disappointed as my rack of ribs were not cooked properly and I had to send them back , but we took a chance and visited again last night. My burger was not cooked , I sent it back and it still wasn’t cooked properly, the onions rings were very greasy so i only ate the salad and chips… we won’t be back again , so disappointing as it’s a lovely venue and great location . Not at any point were we asked how our meal was .

Visited recently with friends. Got drinks quickly, then waited nearly 20 mins for someone to come back to take order. During this time the table behind and to the side, who came in at least 10 mins after us, had drinks and food order taken while we waited, and had eaten starters and received mains before we received our food ( we had only ordered mains). We then waited at least 20 mins before someone came to take dessert order. The tables close to us had eaten desserts and paid bill before we had dessert. Not sure why our service was so much worse than other tables. Must say the food was excellent but will not be returning.

The building itself is pleasing to the eye with exposed beams and old brickwork. The pub itself wasn’t busy (Friday night) and appeared to empty quite early. The small dining area was not full, but enough people to create a little atmosphere. The menu isn’t huge, especially if you discounted burgers from the list, but of what there was, there were a few interesting things. Haloumi and aubergine char grilled was excellent. The traditional prawn cocktail had a lot of prawns - it might be better with shredded lettuce rather than roughly chopped iceberg. The wrapped cod was very nice and the mash made more interesting by the presence of some bits of chopped veg. We tried a ribeye which was very nicely cooked and the chunky chips excellent. We might ha ve also tried the duck, or the ribs.They have a couple of real ales nicely kept, together with a modest wine list. Service was very efficient, there being several staff on duty. Nothing to fault.We had a lovely night out, very reasonable quality food for the price and will definitely go back.

We visited with friends got there early and had a few drinks in the bar before.Food was very nice we all had starters all very nice our mains lamb rump was lovely and the salmon but could have done with more veg on the plates..The only thing was it felt very cramped, the seating is very close together you feel like your sitting on top of other people not good if your nerves about covid, we had to scweez into a corner with a table of two right behind our chairs so struggled to get in... service was very good considering how busy they was.

The building is amazing, the decor inside is very warm and relaxed, the staff are professional and very friendly. We went for a Sunday roast. We are very fussy when it comes to roast dinners in restaurants. Well we were not disappointed here, in fact very impressed. The potatoes and Yorkshire’s are homemade (most places, even the fancier restaurants, seem to rely on frozen potatoes!) - crispy on outside and fluffy on inside. A generous serving of meat and lots of veg. The prawn cocktail starter was very fresh and tasty and the desserts were a good way to round up the meal. We walked out of there ready to burst. The normal lunch and dinner menu looks great too and we cannot wait to re-visit.

We spent a most enjoyable evening here as a party of four to celebrate our wedding anniversary. The service was friendly and efficient and our meals were all first-rate. Good choice of wine/beers etc and a cozy atmosphere combined with reasonable prices. We will certainly return and recommend it to all.

Due to restrictions, very limited with places to eat at the moment, would think this would give them a chance to showcase what they could do but very disappointed. We have been here under normal circumstances and has always been good but at the moment, very limited menu, burgers, steak or fish and chips. Service very slow, 45 minute wait, and nothing special when it arrived. Unless they up there game will be left behind once everywhere is open again

We had pre-booked for a mid week dinner and were extremely impressed with the restaurant’s safety measures. Great social distancing, sanitiser, face coverings etc. It’s a nice, relaxing atmosphere inside. The food was really tasty, well presented and I can thoroughly recommend a meal out here.

I was being treated to a meal out for my birthday and chose to give The Swan a try. It has to be remembered that in the current situation nowhere can be operating with their usual procedures. We arrived a little early for our booking and there was initially a bit of a delay Although we were offered and received drinks. We think we may have hit peak time as the venue was busy which is good news for them.The menu was varied and had some interesting twists. Once we had placed our order the service was prompt and polite. The food was really nice. I would eat here again

Booked a room here whilst on a cycling trip and couldn’t be happier. Nice clean, comfortable rooms, good food and beer and staff were really helpful and friendly.

My family and I visited here on Friday night with high expectations due to the pub being recently refurbished and the menu online looking delightful. Unfortunately as soon as we arrived it took a turn for the worse. There was no atmosphere in the pub at all ; was like walking into a funeral. We got taken into the back of the pub in a separate private room (this wasn’t refurbished and was old and smelly) on our own where we then got completely forgotten about for the rest of the night. We firstly ordered drinks which included 2x pina coladas, the drinks came after a 15 minute wait except for coladas, We thought the waitress had gone back to get them but instead after another 15 minutes of waiting she came back to tell us she had no milk for the cocktails to be made. Why didn’t she tell us this in the first place?. We ordered our food with a few changes I.e SPF instead etc. When the food arrived my burger didn’t come with SPF like I asked. We had to send a lamb rump back as it wasn’t even half cooked with blood pouring out onto the plate. The lamb then come back out after being re-cooked but looked exactly the same which meant my poor 75 yr old nan had to eat our food off of our plates as no one came back to check on us and ask us if the lamb was now ok or If she wanted another meal. We ordered 2 side portions of mushrooms that didn’t turn up until we was half way through our food. We ordered more cocktails which again took forever. We ordered a coke and a Diet Coke which never turned up. We sat with our finished plates in front of us for a good 30 minutes as no one came in to clear them. We all ended up having to walk to the front entrance as we was leaving to ask for the bill!!! We asked to speak to a manager which I appreciate he did apologise and went on to say that they were short staffed but we had not seen him once all night even with the lamb complaint and instead let the young female staff members try to sort it out. The lamb got taken off of the bill but we had no other incentives offered to us to make us return and leave as happier customers. It’s lucky we didn’t have any starters or wanted any desserts otherwise we would have been there all night. We left feeling majorly disappointed and definitely WONT BE RETURNING.

Shocking result today . I was informed that my food was GF after a few mouthfuls I asked the waiter if she was sure the food was GF she responded with yes, but I can check again and sadly she did to return to say the food wasn’t gluten free . the manager didn’t take responsibility and was rude!!! Avoid if you suffer from dietary needs especially and as for customer service it’s a zero.

After reading reviews we booked for lunch, there are 5 of us and we travelled over 45 minutes to Maldon to celebrate my Husband’s Birthday. It’s a really nice restaurant but unfortunately they’ve not invested in aircon for their customers comfort - it was a very hot day but we just thought aircon would be standard. We waited quite a long time for drinks and had to ask to be served a second round. Our food took about 45 minutes to come. We ordered tapas that turned up without plates, we had to ask for them and 2 dishes turned up well after the rest once we reminded that they were missing. It wasn’t busy, 3 members of staff but nobody really looking after us. Very disappointed. This place could be great, maybe it was an off day or staff were too hot to help, but with the current situation eateries should be really looking after paying customers. Such a shame.

we thought we would try the Sunday lunch for the 1st time.it was delicious , we where not disappointed the beef was plentiful and tasty the roast pots and Yorkshire crispy , veg cooked properly , we had this delivered it was on time and hot. We will try the Lamb next time, or maybe the porkWe have had the burgers before and we have picked them up.delicious.We have eaten in this restaurant before the virus, the menu is great and looking forward to returning.

Booked for a Saturday night, restaurant was quiet only two other tables of four and myself and wife. Young waiter and waitress very polite and efficient. Food was ok not fantastic, but music was not good for a pub restaurant, didn’t really enjoy eating dinner with 90s clubbing music quite loud. Restaurant is in more or less same room as bar, was quite loud in bar which was not a problem, quite nice to see it’s still a pub where you can go for just a drink. Just the poor choice of music let it down.

Had a birthday lunch here on a Sunday for six of us and it was very good. It's really nice to see a restaurant that does a full menu on a Sunday as well as the usual roasts. The food was excellent with a good range of meat, fish & veggie starters & mains. Best starters were gin cured sea trout, scallops & roasted beetroots with Goats cheese.Stand out mains for the family were the sea bream ( a really nice big & chunky fillet which was perfectly cooked), the trio of roast meats (with an enormous Yorkshire pud) and the most enormous rack of ribs. The puds were good too with an excellent brownie & very nice churros.Restaurant itself is nicely done out with a nice friendly vibe.The service was excellent even when the restaurant was completely full.The prices were very reasonable too, considering the high quality of the food and cooking.Easy parking too in the Butt Lane car park directly behind the Swan.Really nice restaurant in Maldon. Highly recommended, would definitely go there again.

Booked this last minute for a one night getaway with husband for some couple time without the kids and we were so impressed!! From the outside you'd never realise how lovely it is inside. We were checked in and showed to our room which was beautiful. It was decorated really nicely, with an exposed wooden beam and sloping floor which added to the character and history. It was spotlessly clean and we were very happy. We had booked a table for dinner and wow the food was amazing! I had one of the specials (pan fried chicken breast, dauphinoise potatoes, wild mushrooms, pea and bacon cream) and I can honestly say it was delicious. PLEASE add this to the main menu so I can come back and have it again! My husband had steak and said it was so tender and very tasty. For dessert I had lemon and lime Eton mess and my husband had cheesecake. Again both were lovely. The service was good and all the staff were friendly, polite and made you feel welcome. We had a good nights sleep followed by a nice full english breakfast the next day. We would love to visit again and would highly recommend. Well done The Swan :-)

Me and my partner booked a table for our anniversary and were not disappointed by the food quality or service. We were given complimentary proseco and even desert to share with happy anniversary written on it. They put candles out on the table especially for us and just made the night all that much more special. The staff couldn’t have been more friendly and helpful, they checked on us to make sure everything was going well and congratulated us on our anniversary. The food was superb my partner had the bourbon ribs which practically fell of the bone and I had the ribeye steak medium well which cut like butter. Would highly recommend going there for a nice meal for a couple or for friends and family, just be aware it’s more of an adult atmosphere. We will definitely be going again soon.

Nice but not exceptional, food and service OK, no complaints but no "wow" factor either. Breakfast (which has been good in the past) was disappointingly grease.

Swan Hotel Bar & Grill was a pleasure.

We received a warm welcome from Shannon. We had not booked. Seated promptly and offered drinks after wishing my Dad a very happy birthday. A good selection of food (lunchtime menu as well as normal and tapas). Dad is coeliac so we were looking for GF options. Dad likes simple food so we asked for a small change in the menu and chef was happy to oblige. The cod Dad received was magnificent! Beautifully cooked and presented. My fish and chips too were excellent. Dad ordered both GF puddings and we shared them. Chef (Matt) even wrote Dad a happy birthday message on a slate. We left full and happy. We would recommend the Swan Hotel to anyone. Gentle background music was perfect. There is a small car park (free) but we paid to park in the Butt Road car park behind. No problem for a less than 2 hour stay. The only small request would be - could pudding be served on a plate, not a slate? Puts my teeth on edge every time.

We were warmly greeted and taken to our table. Our drinks were served whilst we selected our food from a very good menu selection, especially as it was lunchtime. Both meals were beautifully presented and my husbands gammon steak was more than generous in size, whilst my chacatorie board of mixed meats, olives, blue cheese etc plus lovely warm crusty bread was a real pleaser ! The waitress was lovely. We were unable to order a dessert as we were full. It was our first visit but we will definately return there.

Dropped in for a light bite on a Sunday evening. First bonus was Adnams beers plus the kitchen was still open. My goats cheese and beetroot salad starter with a bowl of chunky chips was excellent and my friends cheeseboard was very generous with both the biscuits and cheese.

My wife and I visited the Swan for Sunday lunch, the bar is tastefully decorated and very clean. The staff were very friendly and there was good attention to detail. Our food was delicious and was presented very well, only slight downside was the price, but would visit again.

18 of us went last Easter Monday, the food was very good and the service was excellent! We had picked out choices prior to arriving, which was a good idea. Hats off to the staff for coping with all of us.

Poor service, no lunch menu being offered at 1:30pm on a bank holiday Monday - only main courses. Ordered chips and onion rings as a snack - onion rings did not arrive. Three of us - only two forks provided; no napkins - had to help ourselves to what was on surrounding tables; no condiments offered. To top off a pretty terrible experience, as we walked past the kitchen it was quite shocking to hear the staff F-ing at each other - with kids and families within hearing shot. The one star is for the beer - Wibblers IPA - a nice pint, but not enough to encourage me back.

For a small local hotel I was delighted and impressed with the food and the hospitality. The team really went out of their way to help, even preparing dinner early! Highly recommend this hotel.

Had heard good things about the swan so decided to give it a go.shown to our table which is only part of the swan separate the table for 2 was quite small and I found the bench seat quite uncomfortable.staff seemed efficient but not very customer focused.the starter of chicken terrine was ok. Perhaps needed a bit more cooking the pickled vegetables disappointing not a lover of pickled parsnip yuk!!!!. The steak although cooked well was far to salty.the bourbon sauce straight from a jar.the rosemary roasted chicken was also to salty and had no flavour of rosemary.the cheese and garlic potatoes also bland.we were so disappointed with the first 2 courses we didn't bother with desert.we have to travel to maldon this is far from the best eatery there.i want be rushing back there overpriced for what is on offer not a very good atmosphere either pub nearby empty when we left I wonder why???

The Swan had been on our list for a while as we are local but with a toddler we don’t get out on our own very often!! We had an early seating so not too busy. Waiting staff were really friendly and helpful. Ribs to start were very tasty and tender, good portion size too. Fillet steak for main was up there with one of the best I have had. Seasoned and cooked perfectly. Would definitely recommend and look at returning. Worth knowing there is also free parking for guests (hard to come by in a high street restaurant!)

Sadly a couple of years ago we had an unpleasant experience at the Swan, but we decided to give it another go as a last minute choice and we glad we did. The Management seems to of changed for the better!

A mixed hotel, some good / some bad.

We popped in here spur of the moment on a Sunday as we all fancied a roast dinner. Upon walking in the door we were struck by how beautiful the interior is, with exposed brickwork and wooden beams giving a nod to the history of the building. The staff were polite and friendly and served us quickly. The food was incredible and portions are really well sized. Their yorkshire puddings are great too!

What a lovely friendly place! We hadn’t booked but were offered a table in the pub which was perfect as we had been out walking and not particularly dressed up. I am coeliac and they were able to sort out the roast beef dinner and even made me my own gluten free gravy. They advised against the turkey as it may be contaminated by the stuffing. Nice to have such a knowledge about cross contamination. Will definitely recommend and will definitely return. Thank you to all the lovely staff.

We booked the Swan from the internet for one night, in order to visit the Maldon Vintage Christmas. We arrived early so that we could eat in the restaurant before booking in. We were treated in a friendly and efficient manner. The food we were served was simply amazing, being good quality and cooked to perfection. The room (number 6) was very clean and comfortable, with ample tea and coffee supplies. The following morning we had a high quality cooked breakfast to sustain us on our journey home. Thank you to everyone at the hotel for making our stay so memorable.

We came in tonight after hearing good things about The Swan. We saw plenty of tables free on the walk past before coming in. There was a few people at the bar but after enquiring with bar staff about a table for two, we were quickly told it was fully booked tonight. So we left and went elsewhere.

Really nice, old hotel with great food and nice room. We felt the pub are could benefit from having some soft furnishings, sofas etc rather than the restaurant tables and chairs.

Lovely Meal last night, the food was Amazing! Salt Beef croquettes to start, followed by Lamb Rump! Cooked to perfection! Just a shame about the Cocktail. Porn Star Martini was not up to mine or my friends standards.

What a fantastic night went with friends to see a Neil Diamond tribute act, supported by DJ Dan we had fantastic evening the food was out of this world well presented tasted delicious the Neil Diamond act was spot on and rounded off with music by Dj dan, the swan hotel bar and grill you put on a excellent evening and I will be back on the next one

We went here for a family lunch on Sunday and it was absolutely delicious. There was 8 of us and service and food were perfect. Very good value for money and not just Sunday lunch on offer which makes a nice change from most places. Will definitely be back

Had dinner and stayed in Room 4 last night. Everything was fantastic. Great service and food was top class.

It was my first time here for lunch and I must say it was very disappointing , we had to wait ages for our sandwiches and when they did come they were not up to standard for what we were expecting. We also ordered a coup,e of sides which again weren't good, the onion rings etc were vile and greasy, I was quite embarrassed as I had told my friend how good the food was here but not now, we won't be back! Service was terrible too , don't know what's happened ?

Usually I don't even glance at the Swan Hotel when I walk through Maldon, but after a quick visit for a family meal I was pleasantly surprised! Friendly staff, outstanding menu and lovely interior. Will be coming again.

We stayed one night at this hotel over the weekend and I felt compelled to write a review as it was just so lovely.

Had Roasts here with friends on a Sunday Lunchtime. Absolutely delicious! Tender meat,tasty veg and roast potatoes and the most mouth- watering home made Yorkshires.First visit here and would definitely return.All compliments to the chef. Lovely waiting staff also.

Every member of staff we met were genuinely friendly. Food was good, rooms were nice, but the staff are what make it a great place to stay. We were staying there to go to a wedding locally and all the staff could not have been more friendly or helpful.

Our second visit here and once again the food was amazing, I can recommend the lamb cutlets ! the restaurant is clean and comfortable and the staff were very attentive and friendly ... the only downside was a large group of people seated near us with four unruly children. Considering it was a Saturday evening after 7pm and we had come to have an evening meal with an elderly mother , these children were allowed to run riot. It felt as though we were on a trampoline with them running up and down all the time, they nearly tripped one waiter over when he was carrrying coffee. We could hardly hear ourselves speak with the noise level. I feel the staff should have said something to the parents. Another couple who were having a special evening out were not at all happy with these children’s behaviour as well.. such a shame to encounter this behaviour Whilst trying to enjoy a superb meal. But despite this we will be back!
