Swagat in Richmond upon Thames

Been going to Swagat regularly for a long while now and it never disappoints, delicious food and varied menu which is always changed around, has a great atmosphere and most importantly the service is excellent, staff are super friendly and attentive. The manager has become a friend and loves a chat. What more do you want? Fab.

Disgusting! Ended up throwing up right after tasting the butter chicken. Please do not buy it i regret it so much never thrown up like that.

Didn’t book for Saturday night and managed to get a table for two! Was a really nice atmosphere in the restaurant, with friendly and quick service. The food was fresh, delicious and reasonably priced. Would recommend if you are in the area.

Absolutely LOVE this place. Stayed in Richmond for a week and had to visit this place twice because it was so good. There was big portions, good hygiene, amazing service, lovely staff and most importantly deliciousss food. Can highly recommend, I wish I could eat there more often.

Ordered some onion bhajis, poppadoms and a salad from here on Saturday and the plastic that arrived woth it was utterly appalling (see pictures attached) Why, in 2024 are you using so much plastic? It's ridiculous. We didnt even order a dinner, just starters. I cant begun to imagine what would have arrived with dinner. The salad looked like it was prepared a week ago, again see attached pictures. Massive dried sliced of onion... soggy lettuce....dried out carrot. I definitely wouldn't order from here again. Not sure why it gets the reviews it does, its the secind time ive tried it and both times were bad.

Had a takeaway from here. Food was very good and tasty. I would’ve given it a 5 star review except the chicken tikka starter was overcooked and very hard. So much so I could barely cut it with a knife, which was unfortunate as it was clearly quality breast meat but overcooked and burnt. The seekh kebab is by far the best in the area, fantastic. Cooked perfectly. The tikka masala could use a little bit more spice it’s quite tomato flavoured but nice. Overall very good, shame about the chicken tikka, but don’t let that put you off

This is such a pretty and very clean restaurant. I really enjoyed the food and drinks. This restaurant is also in a very nice location and part of Richmond. Ash, our waiter, was very helpful. Sagar was also very hospitable.

Excellent cuisine. Visited on several occasions now, and the quality is always consistently good. Portion sizes are generous. Staff, friendly and attentive. Wide variety of traditional Indian dishes with a fair number of house specialities. Reasonably priced. Recommended.

A lovely place in Richmond , good food and friendly service .We had the Handi gosht a house speciality and they also serve thalis during the week as my sister is a vegetarian it was a good option for her at a reasonable price. A must visit .

Ive been going there for years and always found the staff friendly and accommodating , the chicken is succulent and very tender , very different from most Indian restaurants. The portions sizes if anything were slightly too large! The price was expected for such a good meal , I would highly recommend to anyone who wants high quality food in the Richmond area

The food was disgusting - no words. So disappointed

We all agreed that the food was amazing. Really enjoyed it. Place itself was very dark and decor a bit sparse which worried the team as we went in but good food soon put them at ease. (I posted a photo of my bill so I can see what I had next time I go because we definitely will.)

The main course was delicious but the pilao rice was a very unappealing brown colour. I appreciate that prices have increased post pandemic but the side dish of of dal presented a double whammy: price of £6.99 much higher than previous levels and instead of being half size of main course it was tiny - about a quarter portion for £6.99. What a rip-off! Ratings: Main course 4; rice 2.5; dal 1 means average rating of 2.

Great for vegetarians. We had the Paneer Shashlik as a starter and the Tarka Dal and Paneer Makhani as mains. We have been coming here for years and they never disappoint. Superb!

Great curry and reasonable prices.

This has been my family’s favourite Indian restaurant for years. The food is great and the staff are incredibly helpful.

The most delicious food I have ever had! I love this food. Everything is amazing. Chicken Korma sauce is exquisite. The Tikka Masala is fantastic! The naan, oh baby! I will be ordering more very soon! Thank you Swagat.

Starters were good and mains plentiful but a couple of them much spicier than expected (no ‘warning’ on the menu). The rice was very dark and resembled the fried rice from a cheap Chinese t/a which I suspect is leftovers churned over to hide any sins. It did not look appealing but tasted fine. Expensive.

Being unfamiliar with Richmond this was a random choice of restaurant. The staff were personable and the food a delight. Sauces and their spices tasted distinct and were clearly freshly prepared. The baked pilau rice was so different from standard fare suggesting the presence of a chef who takes pride in the details of their craft.

Today, a staff of the restaurant poured some dirty liquid/oil from a pot on the pavement&road just in front of me. Very disgusting!

Really lovely staff. All of them. Helpful. Friendly. Efficient. There was nine of us and we were a bit too loud. A bit too tipsy. And a bit too bald. We had our starters, apologised for leaving early, and asked for the bill. We left before things got messy. But not before leaving an uplifted gratuity as some compensation for us not fulfilling our evening. We resolved to return.

I came for my husbands birthday tonight 64/2023 . This is our first ti.e coming to this Indian restaurant .we were recommended by a friend of ours and I can truly say the food is abseloutley delicious, clean , well presented and sagar professional, friendly and his service and hospitality second to none . Average food. Frozen chicken. So many other fantastic Indian restaurants in and around Richmond that knock the socks off this dated, uninspiring and bland food.

Visited Thursday evening 2nd March. Absolutely delicious food, when my friend and I meet up in Richmond every few months we always look forward to dinner at The Swagat, and the food just gets better every time. Thank you, and see you again soon Alan

Imagine a bag of frozen veg. Well that’s what you get in their vegetable curry. The mint yoghurt looked luminous green! Very disappointing. Cheap and nasty.

10/10 experience. Food was no other than amazing, great tasting and served quickly. The service was very nice too and I highly recommend this restaurant for anyone who enjoys a great curry.

I realise costs have increased. But can’t believe we only got one aloo tikki chaat per portion. The main ingredient is potato! This place used to be better value. Food was nice though

For an Indian it’s on the expensive side but that’s purely the location so it is what it is. The food was very good and the service impeccable. The waiter with the glasses was a credit to the restaurant and the industry. I’d have no hesitation in returning.

Regularly have takeaways from here which are so delicious. It definitely is best in the area for comforting tradition indian food. My favourite dish is the lamb rogan ghosh and nann, great flavours

Very disappointed. Have enjoyed lovely meals at swagat in the past but it was very different this time. We didn’t enjoy the food at all. Prawns rubbery and tasteless. Chicken very sweet. Such a shame. Maybe an off evening but not rushing back.

Booked this,restaurant for the first time this weekend. Admittedly it was busy but one would usually get water and be able to order a drink in less than 20 minutes. Another half an hour for starters to arrive and the main course over an hour from when we arrived was not acceptable. This was disappointing as I was taking an overseas visitor and the food whilst ok was not worth the wait. Needless to say I will not be going back.

I ate here for the first time on Saturday. It was very busy and extremely noisy ( which I am not blaming the restaurant for). However the service was extremely slow - 20 minutes to get water and a drink and we had to attract their attention to place the order. Another wait for starters and at least an hour for the main course. Food was ok except my mild curry was quite hot. So poor service and disappointing experience overall. I would not go there again.

It’s ok, but really nothing special. We had an assortment of veggie dishes, and with the exception of texture from the ingredients, couldn’t differentiate one dish from another. Quite disappointed. Service was normal The food all tasted the same.

Surely the Michelin distinctions are just kind of a big lie. Probably, owner changed at some point. Took tikka masala which is basic dish, easy to compare to other Indian restaurants. Being a lover of Indian food, I was really really disappointed.. Cheap chicken, tasteless sauce. Avoid.

Delicious food - we had vegetarian options - mushrooms , aubergines, raita and Dahl, with pilau rice and a paratha Nan. Absolutely delightful. Lovely that the owner came and chatted to each table. Five stars and highly recommended . And a major celebrity chef was in there when we ate getting a takeaway curry!!

I used to live in Richmond years ago. Had some of the best curry ( Indian food ) e er while living there. Returned after many years, looked at several menus, finally found this hidden gem of a restaurant. The fragrant aromas wafting through the kitchen door as I walked by was the first clue! Looking at the menu found so many items I hadn’t seen, let alone tasted for years ! I was able to ask for a spicier version of chicken jalfrezi - with vindaloo heat. E wry thing we had starting with samosas and garlic naan was superb!! The service was wonderful and the ambience was modern and stylish. The food was the best Indian Ice ever had! You absolutely must try this place!! I wish I still lived in Richmond!

Good is pretty amazing but portion is rather small. The lights were so dimmed you can barely read the menu. Service should be improved but it's still acceptable. Particularly loved the grill fish that's the best of the meal I had. For the price you're paying (20-25 quid per head) I would say this place is worth the experience!

Usually a great curry, but ordered a chicken dhansak today and it was inedible because the wrong chilli had been used.

Swagat is one of our ‘go-to’ restaurants and delivery was great - even early which was a bonus as we were hungry!!

Arrived here early last Wednesday evening , the waiter was on point noticed when I had finished my coke was given popadoms whilst I looked at menu and my starter arrived quickly. It was beautiful from the starter to the main meal the garlic naan was so fresh and tasty I ordered another to take home and brought my leftovers home I couldn’t leave it behind , even the rice was lovely will definitely return .

I brought my family to the restaurant and they were very kind to my son. Excellent food as always. Friendly service.

The food was excelent, our waiitress Sarah made our evening perfect! Her service was impeccable, attentive and humorous. Would reccomend for the diverse menu and excellent food and staff.

Wait staff was wonderfully attentive (but not too much) and the food was excellent. Only distraction was the in and out of delivery people. Definitely on our recommended list and we will return to again.

We ordered via delivero. Food was very tasty and had authentic flavours without being spicy. My kids also loved the food. Delivery was on time and food was piping hot. Its on my list now for regular order😀

Ok so for every comment that says the food was fantastic i just wanted to make it very clear for anyone that decides to get from from here, all the meat is frozen some goes with the fish and vegetables. Almost every dish has the same base sauce other then spinach. If food is dropped on the floor it will end up on the plate regardless. any potato's cooked before hand will typically be used on the weekend so minimum 4 day old potatoes same with the rice most likely you'll be eating 2/3 day old rice just heated up in the microwave. Now for the kitchen, it may be one of the most disgusting kitchens I've ever been in. Ofcures it gets its usual clear down in the evening but thats it, it hasn't had a deep clean in god knows how many years. Now for the tandoor chef he tends to scratch himself in areas of the body that you shouldn't when cooking in the kitchen and then handling food without wasing his hands but don't worry he washes his feet by the back door. Yes it may be the best Indian in Richmond but that's because one is going out of business and the other is just straight up bad food. The nice picture of Gordon outside with the boss well that's because they have a regular couple that come in and they just know him. Had nothing to do with how "good the food was" Over all I give it a solid 1 star, Finedining I think not.

Reliably good local Indian restaurant. Perhaps not quite as good as it used to be, but the food is still very tasty and the service is friendly and attentive.

We have ordered with Swagat for years. We have ordered through Deliveroo this evening and after 1 hour got the delivery enclosed in the normal bag with receipt for items as usual. After opened found only half the items were in a the bag. Phoned Swagat who were very defensive and said the chef put items in and it was Deliveroos responsibility- it is not Deliveroos responsibility to Put the correct order in the delivery! Take responsibility for your own service Swagat!!!! Horrificly disappointed as SwGat used to be a shining star.
