The Sutton Staithe Inn is beautifully set at a quiet spot on the River Ant, with plenty of parking, green spaces and nearby villages and places of interest. I stayed just overnight, the staff were friendly and welcoming, my room was clean and comfortable and breakfast was cooked to order and of very good quality. The building is interesting, old and rambling, with twists and turns, steep stairs and dark corners. The decor seems to be quite recently done and adds to the atmosphere in the public rooms. The price for B&B was reasonable and I would happily return.

Not what we expected at all. Freezing cold and very run down. Room had no heating radiators didn’t work and “no oil” delivered apparently. Was given an electric fan heater to warm up the bathroom which is a huge H&S risk. No hot water to bath or shower. Holes in the wall, big TV on a dresser that you couldn’t watch as too low down and a greasy head print on the head board and a splattered mosquito in the bathroom with a shoddy mirror and light and dirty floor. Breakfast in a freezing room with a plug in heater not fit for purpose. Breakfast was however very tasty but the coffee was again cold. Whole of the hotel needs a revamp there was wallpaper peeling off the walls a redecoration and a blinking good clean.

Stayed at this hotel and had Sunday dinner and breakfast. The room was fine, albeit the water temperature was set so low we both had cold showers. We have visited on many previous occasions and had Sunday dinner, so we were looking forward to it, unfortunately it wasn't great, all the ingredients did look quality however the cooking was dissapointing. The meat was as tough as old boots, the broccoli hadn't seen a pan, aldente it certainly wasn't, more uncooked. The roasts were rock hard, Yorkshire puddings were flat, the only reasonable cooked item werè the cauliflower cheese and peas. 2 other couples were eating along with ourselves and you could hear all the tables rocking as we tried to cut into the beef. When the table opposite was asked 'was everything ok' they said it was awful and they'd never return. When we were asked the same, I said it was very poor, probably the worst Sunday dinner I'd ever eaten, the dog had eaten most of it, the youg lad just laughed at me, no apology whatsoever and certainly nothing offered by way of redress. £14.95 isn't cheap for Sunday dinner, if you are charging this amount you really need to be serving quality and if it isn't up to scratch then be prepared to apologise, not just laugh and walk away. So breakfast the following day was OK but what was the sausage. It looked OK but was more akin to a bratwurst and certainly not a sausage you'd expect on a breakfast. So overall we'd not be returning, hotel room was reasonably priced but simple things like serving well cooked Sunday dinner and proper breakfast butchers sausage would help. Two very dissapointed customers

We were staying on a boat at Sutton and went to the hotel for a meal. We had some drinks in the afternoon and had a table booked for the 5 of us. We ordered 5 mains, and 4 of them were good, but my palma wrapped chicken was extremely poor. The potion of chicken in ham was small, overcooked, and the potato was burnt on both sides. I told the waiter and he went to the kitchen and he came back and told me that that was the way it should be. He offered me a free drink, which I declined. I would have been happy for a new dish to be prepared, though the portion would have still been small or to have had the dish removed from the bill. This was the most expensive dish that we ordered and it has let down our experience at the Sutton Staithe Hotel.

We've been to Sutton Staithe Hotel around 8 times now and every experience was different, generally a welcome atmosphere with wonderful people or locals to chat to. Sadly, our visit in 2020 was not good. My husband tried to chat to locals and was verbally abused in response. We were upset and vowed not to return but decided not to judge on one bad visit. The place, locals and staff was warm and friendly, the food exceptional and we walked away contented. Thank you for finishing off a lovely holiday. See you next year.

We ate here while on a boating holiday. We popped in for coffee in the morning and booked a table for the evening, which was a good move as they were quite busy. There’s a good choice on the menu. We had chicken wings and prawn bombs to start with. Then we had lamb shank and chicken pie which my husband said was outstanding. There’s a nice atmosphere here and the staff are super friendly.

The room was a little tired but the staff were friendly and rooms were clean, and there is a strict requirement to wear masks indoors so in that sense it felt very safe. However, a very odd thing was the breakfast arrangement which is still partly operated as a buffet with everyone sharing a toaster and bread bin (we skipped toast as a result as it didn't feel very safe).

Waited an 1.5hours for our food and it was inedible. Asked to speak to the manager and he was the rudest person I have ever met - he agreed to refund me for 3 meals (there were 10 of us!) We are still waiting for the refund - a week later. Have called 3 times and apparently he is never there…the lady I spoke to refused to give me her name and also the managers name. We spend a week on the Norfolk Broads and there are definitely better pubs/restaurants to go to with a lovely friendly atmosphere and good food.

After a good review regarding the Sutton Staithe Hotel that I wrote earlier this year, my wife and I decided to return for the Sunday carvery. On arrival we were told that once again the Carvery was shut and no longer operating, but we could still have a Sunday roast in the Restaurant. We were shown to a table in a very stark and impersonal dining room and got chatting to the people on the next table who informed us that they had ordered the Roast dinner almost an hour previously and were still waiting!! We browsed the menu and also wanted the Roast, but were told that it would be a 1 hour wait so we chose the Lamb Shank from the standard menu instead. Just as we got our dinner the waiter informed the people on the next table that the would be NO roast dinner so would they be kind enough to order off of the Standard menu, which they did. Our dinner was very good quality even though it to nearly 40 minutes to arrive at our table and the people on the next table still had not got any food!! The only saving grace though all of this was the young waiter who although on his own without any any help managed to keep a pleasant and friendly manner throughout. If this the way that the so called senior management run their kitchen and hotel then they will lose a lot of customers and do not deserve to stay in business. This would be a shame as we have used this establishment many times over the years and have watched it go downhill. I will not be re visiting this place until it has improved drastically. Not recommended for lunch unless you have about 3 spare hours..:(

We booked a table for 6.30pm...the menu wasn't the biggest but I had the pie of the day which was Mince beef and onion with Mashed potato and peas..My wife had battered halloumi with chunky chips..I ordered extra chunky chips on the side as I have a big appetite and wasn't sure what size the main would be...well when it came I realised the chips may be a challenge as the meal was a very nice size portion...really tasty and worth the price..my wife was equally satisfied with her portion and had to leave some chips. The waitress couldnt do enough for you and the real ales on draft were spot on. All in all a great end to our week on the broads and would go here again next time. Me and my other half are within walking distance to Sutton Staithe. We go often, Wouldn't call ourselves regulars. Just often enough to appreciate it.We love having starters and a main. Were more savoury people than sweet. I love the chicken liver patè. Think the portion size is perfect and the toasted strips of ciabatta compliments the dish. My other half does struggle to find a starter on the menu but has had the devil's crayfish in the past when you had it on the menu. My particular favourite is chicken ciabatta that you have on the menu. It's a lovely chicken in what I can imagine is a salsa covered in cheese on top of a slightly toasted pieces of ciabatta. It's accompanied by chips and salad. I think it's a fantastic dish and very unique as I haven't found anything like that in the area. My other half loves the sirloin surf and turf. Cooked to perfection with accompanying tomatoes, mushrooms, chips, salad and scampi. The kitchen staff really do know what there doing The service is fantastic. The waiters are charming and polite. They look after us very well and have done since day one. The selection of beers are fantastic. My particular favourite is the landlords brew. Can't remember what it's called. Architecturally the Sutton Staithe Hotel is extremely unimpressive if you approach from the river, as many will, since there's a large extension in the style of Portakabin - but when you reach the front it's beautiful, so please keep going! This was our first meal at the hotel, though we'd previously stopped by for a drink. We enjoyed the simple pub fare on offer, choosing a Cheese & Bacon Burger and a grilled 'Chicken Stack', breast of chicken covered in bacon and smothered in barbecue sauce. Each came with a generous helping of chunky chips, a small pot of coleslaw, and a salad garnish. Both meals were very tasty and rather filling - we regretted having shared a portion of garlic bread to start. Dessert was out of the question! With 2 pints of Adnams the bill came to just over £31, which we felt was reasonable given the portion sizes. Although it was a Monday the restaurant was busy, and not having booked we were lucky to get a table; nevertheless the service was very good.

We stopped there for lunch when we parked the boat at the boatyard, it's really close. We sat outside as it was a nice sunny day, the pub and building looked great and well kept. I had the fish pie which was a very big portion and tasted good, the only thing i didn't like was a thick layer of melted cheese over the top. I would have stirred it inside the mashed potato or just scatter a bit over the top. But overall it was good and great value for money, i would reccommend stopping there when on boating holiday.

Revisited at lunchtime for a drink. Staff polite although dogs are more welcome as you have to step over them. It is badly in need of a good deep clean and refurb. Ok for drink but don't think I would like to stay.

Myself, Husband and 2 Children (age 11 and 9) had an evening meal hear during our recent hoilday on the Norfolk Broads, at the time of visting the restaurant was empty, we were put in a smallish side room, the service did start off ok, however during our meal a group of around 20 men were seated in the side room with us (despite all other areas of the restaurant been empty), I understand the staff cannot be blamed for the behaviour of this group of men (bad language, loud, rude etc) however why seat a large group of men in a side room with a family with young children??? The food itself was below average and the service turned for the worse as the evening progressed. Overall very dissapointed.

We have dined here many times over the last year when in the Area and never left hungry or disappointed . We ate a lovely supper last week of homemade soup ( and like a previous review it was a thicker soup but it tasted lovely and not a bowl of water!) Hubby had pate which was gluten free and as a newly diagnosed gluten intolerant he was delighted with , the chef was very helpful in accommodating him and he had gluten free fish and chips as a main . I had the chicken pasta and it was also lovely -we were so full couldn't manage dessert although hubby was tempted by a slice of gluten free cheesecake which was doggy bagged for us to take out!attentive friendly staff as always Looking forward to seeing what changes are made by New owners but don't lose its old world charm and fab food please! We will return

I haven't been here for a few years as it's been going downhill for a while, but I'd heard the place had new owners so we thought we'd give it a try for lunch. It hasn't changed much yet décor wise, but the food was good. I managed to speak to the new owners who seemed very nice, I was told improvements have started behind the scenes, fixing the roof, kitchen work, the bedrooms etc. But as it's a big hotel-restaurant it will take time to do all the work, but it looks like it's definitely heading in the right direction, they were also talking of special events including live music, you've got to applaud the new owners for taking on a big job like this, but after talking to them they seem up to the job and good luck to them! But back to the food, my wife and I both had the Lasagne and it was good, and a decent sized portion it was too! We also had a bottle of Chateaunerf de Pape which was lovely. We will definitely go again soon and hope to see even more improvements!

called for drinks and meet up with an old friend. The young lad on the bar was particularly helpful and friendly. What a pleasant lad who not only welcomed us and had a conversation with us but went out of his way to help an elderly chap who needed some information. A lot of people would have palmed him off but this lad went and found out what was needed and provided it in such a patient and professional way. He should be well recognised by the owners for his attitude. Unfortunately I didn't catch his name but he likes Chilli and Lime Popcorn. That should narrow it down. A wonderful young chap. Please give him our thanks and regards.

As regular diners at the Sutton Staithe during our several boating holidays each year we were alarmed to read some of the recent reviews of the restaurant since the new owners moved in. However, we had an excellent meal as usual. We were warmly welcomed on arrival by the barman/waiter, who was doubling up on a very quiet night and remembered us (and even our favourite table) from previous visits. Our steaks were well cooked and portions were, as usual, ample. The service was cheerful and friendly and we left feeling relieved that one of our favourite spots on the Broads was still well worth a visit.Let's hope the early 'teething troubles' other reviews mention are now well behind them.

I was in a party off 15 people, our organiser had ask the owner to put us in the main restaurant, at the time the owner could not of been listening to him, as we were put in a freezing cold room with no heating at all , and no people around us, so not much atmosphere . Apart from that we waited about 80 mins for are starters to arrive , one person had ordered the soup, it was solid, the spoon stuck up in the middle and was not going anywhere, there was no ham in it either, just mashed up peas , when the person complained about his soup the waiter was livered about this, and stormed over to him and snatched the soup away from him and stormed off, came back about 15 mins later with no apology at all, the soup was still the same, the waiter had no manners at all, he must of been the owners son, like farther like son. One of the guests main was about 20 mins late after every body had there meals brought to them, there was no apology at all, the waiter could not care less, the other waiter was brilliant he was how a waiter should be. our organiser spoke to the owner in the end as we could not stand it any longer , the owner said we shouted at him, this was a complete lie , he said we had up set the chef, as we complained about the soup, in my opinion i would of sacked the chef, if you cant make soup, i would of thought, he can not do much else . My peas were from a can and my tomato was black. The owner lost his temper, as we dared to complained about the room and the food and ask us all to leave , the bill came to over £400 he ask for that, not many people wonted to pay, as he was so rude and would not let us finish are meals as people in our party were still eating. He did not say sorry at all, I do not recommend this place at all

Was looking forward to a good meal with friends but that wasn't to be . room was cold and uninviting ,Pea and ham soup ( extremely thick) our spoons all stood upright like soldiers on parade with 1 spoon lasting upright for 5 minutes. the main meals arrived and we surprised that they were nice size portions and edible. The staff seemed young and inexperienced with customer service but at least better than the elderly man who was by all accounts the owner. We paid left and wont be going back not a good place.

15 of us went for business meal, looking at doing this regular. When booking we asked to sit in the restaurant but instead were in a back room where stacks of chairs were stored, it was that cold I didn't take my coat off. Starters had a few issues like the soup the spoon stood up in. One person got his main when others were half was through. Had to ask for napkins. When we complained we were ordered to leave by the owner who was not willing to hear any criticism. Such a shame as food was good when they got it out and waiting staff could not be faulted.

The Sutton Staithe Carvery is of a great quality, and is also extremely reasonable. The meat is carved for you, but the helpings are generous and you can ask for more without feeling like Oliver Twist. The veg is always lovely and fresh. Excellent all round and great value. Next trip there is Mother's Day, but but in-laws eat there 2 or 3 Sundays each month.

After I had booked FIL said he had had a negative report, so a little dubious as we were also taking our son his wife and small child, how wrong can some people be, we were very pleasantly surprised not only on the quality of the food but the quantity. Two of us had ham eggs and chips, one had moussaka, one lasagne, one fish and chips and our granddaughter had fish fingers, potatoes and peas. It was a very quiet day and we had one of the small rooms to ourselves, very pleasant overlooking the river. All in all we could find no fault with the food and the service, and will most definitely be returning.

There were five in our party and from the moment we arrived the waiter was friendly and helpful. Our daughter is Gluten and onion intolerant, so dining out can sometimes be difficult. The waiter was very helpful collaborating with the Chef to make sure none of the ingredients would upset my daughter. The selection was fantastic, the portion sizes were generous and cooked to perfection, we all left completely full and content.

Visited with my sister during an exceptionally rainy afternoon in August. We had a couple of drinks in the bar in the late afternoon/evening and picked up some menus. The barman asked if we were ordering food, we said we were but wouldn't want to eat until about 7. He took our order then and then brought the food at 7pm on the dot. The staff were friendly, polite and very attentive. The homemade chicken pie was exceptional and the moussaka very authentic. Would also recommend gingerbread cheesecake! A great atmosphere and fantastic food. Can't wait to visit again next year thank you.

Sutton Staithe Hotel is well situated for a captive boating clientele, being next to the moorings. Looks great from the outside & kids loved the outside playground around the back.We booked in advance, happy to fit in with the ebb & flow of evening trade, but unfortunately we were seated in the bar area, rather than restaurant. This wouldn't have been an issue if it hadn't been for the local bore & his poor choice of language which wasn't suitable when my 3 young kids & wife are sat 4 feet away making us all feel very awkward. Thankfully 'Mr Big Mouth' soon had his fill, gave everyone a 'high-six' & left to resume his banjo playing somewhere on the river.Having ordered our food, we were informed we might have to wait 35 mins, which is fine, but in reality closer to an hour. Not off to a great start, but when the food did arrive, it was actually quite good! Kids meals were hearty & good value. Adult meals were traditional pub fare (steaks, burgers, lasagne, cod & chips etc), but tasted really good & again hearty portions. My gripe on service was when I tried to order our food & drink, the girl behind the bar kept getting distracted, cutting me off in mid-flow & having conversations with other people, which gave the impression she didn't really care too much about me as a customer. If Sutton Staithe Hotel had local competition they might struggle, but I don't think they do, so make the most of it, enjoy the food & run quick if you hear a banjo!

What a very pleasant friendly man serving behind the bar. This is the 3rd visit in two weeks and this gentleman has been the best bar man that we have come across in Norfolk. With a member of staff like this keep hold of him.

I want to warn people of the disgusting treatment I received on Friday 21st June 2024. My wife and I walked into the premises that had bifold doors wide open and I was shouted at by a blond women who stated “I just moped that floor!” I said I’m sorry and said are you open and she, the blond woman, shouted back at me “we close at four!” So I walked out. I was standing outside the cafe with my wife when I heard the blond woman say to her female colleague “what an idiot!”obviously directed at me! There wasn’t sign to say they were closed and as the doors were open thought we could enter and have a nice meal as we have done on previous occasions. We, my wife and I, went to Dottys Tea House after where our receipt was printed 16.08 pm so clearly we went to Galaxy Cafe before 4pm. The boss needs to know about the “customer service” that isn’t on offer at his establishment. There should also be a sign stating “wet floor” because if we had slipped over the owner would be liable for a personal injury claim. We will never return to this place!

We were very excited to hear that the willow tree will be offering Sunday roasts and we were lucky enough to go for the soft launch. The food was absolutely to die for. I went for the lamb and it was cooked to perfection. The cauliflower cheese was the best I have ever had and I’m really excited to go back for another one! This pub seems to be at its absolute best! Thanks Tony and the team!

Precious owners were amazing but sad to say it’s gone downhill now it’s changed hands, both in food and service. The previous owners can now be found at lavender kitchen which is located on Banstead high street and it’s thriving. Same as roast and ground was but a bigger restaurant

Popped into Ganleys one evening on way home. Was a tad chilly so thought I’d have an Irish coffee. Well Angel made one of the nicest Irish coffees I’d ever had 💚 Definitely worth a try!
