Sutton & Sons in Hackney

This has to be the best fish (cod) and chips. Steaming hot, fresh, pleasantly presented and of high quality. See from the pics how wondrously white the cod is. Very light batter coating and not a splodge of grease anywhere. Tempura prawns starter was a nice appetiser, but at £8.95 for 8, but in all honesty, they didn't seem homemade, and Lidl Sainsburys, and Tesco do pretty much the same thing for around £2.50/£3 for a box of 12. A very nice eating experience with great attentiveness and service. However, it was most off-putting and unpleasant to discover that the wooden table we were at was quite filthy. Stains and dirt embedded on the surface. On one wipe with a sanitising cloth, the result is shown in photo. On looking around, other surfaces could be seen with clumps of dust. Not very good for any eating establishment, and deep cleans should be done every day! C'mon, don't get complacent, guys. You have a lovely, cosy, remarkable establishment, so please take more pride in it!

Ordered a skate wing and chips and a rock and chips, also a Wally. Instead received a middle piece of skate with probably no more than 150gs of meat and the rock tasted like a gone off fish cake, not nice… chips were fairly decent but fancied fish and chips not just chips. Much like getting a gone off tuna sandwich with nice bread… pointless…the Wally was hollow in the middle so was probably as fresh as the fish. I did message them directly before writing this review but they viewed it and didn’t respond. It’s also notable to point out their very extensive vegan menu which looks AMAZING on paper (which I appreciated at first as a chef myself) has a designated fryer that’s marked vegan in capitals is where my awful fish came out of. So, nothing vegan here as cross contamination is, evidently, quite an international practice! My friend was also sick the next day, he had the rock! Go figure… So to sum up, Bad communication Bad customer service Gone off food Cross contamination When it said renowned fish and chips I didn't have that in mind. Not what I expect from anywhere with such competition in the local area. Waste of money. Avoid.

I really love this place. They cater for a healthier option which I like as I'm not a fan of traditional fish and chips. Today I had the grilled seabass with salad and it was very tasty and just perfect. The fish is very fresh. Can't wait to return.

I travel to London a lot for work and I decided to have fish and chips. Not busy on a Tuesday at 1850 apart from three in front. Purchased large cod and chips, £13.95 and took back to my hotel. Fish had no flavour, even covered in salt and vinegar and the chips didn’t look or taste like they had been cooked. I go to a great deal of restaurants and takeout due to work and business but I shall NOT be back here. Some of the worst fish and chips I have had. I don’t write things which don’t deserve but this does.

I returned to the Stoke Newington restaurant and was again impressed. The ambiance, decor and of course the food, all make for a wonderful experience. Ryan, the manager is exceptionally dedicated and is committed in ensuring his customers enjoy the best experience. Very friendly, attentive, fantastic customer service skills. The cod is bright white, the batter crisp, delicate and enveloping the fish perfectly and the chips just as they should be, and the extras/condiments are all there to compliment and meet your needs. Drinks are served in custom glasses with ice & lemon. I thoroughly and wholeheartedly recommend and commend Ryan, Hana and all at Sutton & Sons. Well done!

Nous étions tenté par leur fish and chips Vegane reconnu dans toutes les bonnes publications . Et bois n'avons pas été déçu :pas de soja (déjà bien pour les allergiques) , très copieux et à moi s de 14€ le plat c'est un rapport qualité prix exceptionnel. Petite salle propre mais sans prétention dans un quartier où il doit faire bon habiter. Absolument à recommander

My partner introduced me to this place, it’s his local fish and chips and it’s honestly the best! The quality of the food is amazing! My favourite is the lobster roll always packed to the brim and so yummy. Another favourite is the tuna steak burger, best fish burger you will have! Friendly service and food is always fresh.

This restaurant cooks its fish and chips using gound nut oil, which they confirmed was actually peanut oil. This is not well advertised or mentioned when ordering food. A family member suffered anaphalaxis and was taken to hospital by ambulance after innocently eating just 2 chips from this establishment. Please be aware if you have a nut allergy - as chips are not an obvious food to avoid. I did email the owner with the details of what happened, and I asked if they could put better signage in place and train staff to mention that the food is cooked in peanut oil......I wasnt even given the grace of a response to my email.!

If you order this dish, please be advised that’s it’s raw fish cooked in lemon. The chips were good.

I went to Sutton and Sons in Islington about a kilometer away from Angel Tube Station. The fish was excellent as were the freshly fried chips. I tried the new soy-based vegan fish and chips. Banana blossom vegan fish and chips are also available,

The fish was a bit mushy and did not look like a full fillet. They dudded me one calamari ring. I could hear the server guy saying 'where's the other calamari ring..?'. Server and the cook had a look, couldn't find it. Gave me a pile of fried ends instead. When the server gave me the order I asked him if it was all there. 'Yeah' he said :-(

Fantastic fresh food. The service was great. The staff was very friendly. We had such a laugh. Very nice and clean restaurant I would recommend them to anyone.

I love this restaurant and come often to eat the vegan battered sausage, scampi or calamari which are all excellent, good portion sizes and always excellent service but...it really upsets me that the banana blossom just doesn't compare to the taste and texture of tofish which is the typical vegan offering in place of the classic fish and chips :( I and so many other vegans would be so happy if you considered adding it as an option!

Came here on a visit with my daughter and her boyfriend. We had superb fresh fish (plaice and cod) and my daughter had vegan battered sausage and chips. Everything beautifully fresh and huge portions. Staff were really attentive and friendly and when in London again we will make sure to revisit!

Dreadful service. First visit the waiter assumed we had left the most generous tip and pocketed the cash. The second time we waiting for ages for our food. Over 10 people ordered after us but got their food before. Visit at your peril.

Branch on Kingsland Road never disappoints, good food & friendly staff BUT the Essex Road branch is the total opposite. Have left an average rating but on the strength of Kingsland Road alone would have rated higher.

Básicamente, Suttons está cocinado, pero el menú es muy sofisticado, una excelente variedad de pescado a la parrilla y frito. Servicio amable incluso cuando nuestro hijo de dos años decidió que compartiría su comportamiento con todo el restaurante. La comida estaba bien preparada, una buena selección de cervezas y vinos. Buen valor en general.

Coming from the north in an area known for its fish and chips, I have never ordered this take away in London as I didn’t expect anywhere to match up to standards. I heArd Sutton and sons had won an award for one of the best fish and chips in London and with its huge queues, I thought it must be good. Unfortunately the walk from the shop to our house (10 minutes) resulted in the chips being stone cold. The batter on the fish was soggy!!!! No crisp light batter, it looked like an Iceland oven fish I had ordered. Thoroughly disappointed. Do not eat here.

Past summer I traveled from Florida and stayed at the Islington Inn for a week. I had my daily dinner at your restaurant the service and food was awesome. Will definitely make a trip to England to enjoy your food again.

3 out of the last 5 visits I had poor service from one guy on till. First time he got takeaway order wrong and we were at home by time we realized. Second time I spotted it before we left. Third time a meat sausage was put in instead of a vegan one which was final straw. Guy taking order seemed clueless most of the time.

I had the grilled trout Which was amazing and cooked to perfection. My waiter was absolutely perfect and very attentive. Just bear in mind that if you want takeaway, you'll have to pay in cash. Can't wait to return. Thank you.

Good quality fish and chips, slightly pricey for the portion sizes and seldom friendly staff but nice dining environment. Recently found out they began to use beer batter again so I guess their muslim clientele dont matter. Muslims should avoid.

Rude, bad-tempered waitress, who barked instructions at me to sit down as soon I got into the cafe, and got angry with me and walked off because I couldn’t decide quick enough. Plus, a menu board that didn’t have all the options that were actually being sold on it, leading to confusion when I did order. Fish on display looked dull and not fresh. Then when my meal came, it was the wrong kind of fish! Chef argued that it wasn’t, but was forced to admit he’d made a mistake when he checked the order.

Delicious fish and chips washed down with an excellent Islington lager. Good local patronage and atmosphere.

Il "pesce" viene preparato con i fiori della banana marinati che gli danno una consistenza che è una via di mezzo tra un carciofo e del pesce vero l'ultima volta ho assaggiato anche le fish cakes, ottime anche quelle! Buena comida pero mimada por el hecho de que no se permiten perros en un restaurante que ofrezca un menú vegano. El personal quería permitir perros, pero dijo que los dueños no los permitían. No es un requisito legal no permitir animales y el piso tenía una superficie dura y una cocina separada, así que no hay excusa. La comida que tomé mi compañero y yo fue salchichas y papas fritas veganas. Fue hermoso. Las patatas fritas regulares son enormes, recién fritas y muy sabrosas. El saussge también fue muy agradable. Tan buen valor 10 para ambas cajas para llevar. Tenemos la intención de volver para más golosinas veganas increíbles.

El pescado y las patatas fritas son una de mis comidas favoritas. He visitado algunas de sus sucursales y nunca tengo ninguna queja. Como una sola cena, no te sientes inolvidable, ya que te hacen sentir bienvenido.

Small, but friendly. The portions are a generous and definitely not overpriced. Value for money and pleasant staff.

I have visited the branch on Essex road over the past year and the food I will have to say is good quality and the curry sauce is some of the best you will get in any London chippy and not the usual factory made rubbish you get in many fish and chip shops. The problem is that they don't seem to mind serving sausages that are almost pink on the inside and not at all crispy on the outside so not very appealing unless you are a lover of rare done meat. I will say cook your food for longer and you will have a very respectable family run chippy.

I visited the shop with my girlfriend and purchased two chips. The guy at the till was very pleasant and friendly. The experience changed massively when I asked for two tap waters and sat down. A lady approached us and let it be know we would not be getting tap water and if we wanted to stay seated we needed to pay extra. This was never relayed to us at the till and the price on the board is one price. The lady who approached us was extremley rude and unaccomodating. I will not be back and I feel embarrassed for the rest of your front of house staff. Shocking level of service and totally rude.

The worst customer service I've ever experienced in my life.

Delicious vegan meal. I tried vegan prawn Cocktail to start, followed by vegan scampi and chips or vampi. All delicious. I took home a vegan seitan dinner kebab, also delicious. Sides included vegan coleslaw, vegan mayo and vegan tartare sauce. All delicious. Recommend seeing if there is something on the menu that you would like to try. Also as the restaurant is small, there are excellent options for takeaway.

Our first visit here and we thoroughly enjoyed our traditional fish and chips. We were a party of four and some of us had cod and some haddock but both were well cooked and tasty as were the chips. We had various drinks including a bottle of white wine which was a bit disappointing. Service was friendly but could be more efficient. Prices were as you would expect for London, we had a few sides, couple of soft drinks and a bottle of wine, our bill was about £73.00. Would probably go again, their menu is quite extensive for a small chippy, lobster seemed good value for £10.00.

I’m shocked by some of the reviews on here! I’ve been going to this chip shop for over 5years (both eat-in & take-away) & have always had a positive experience. I love their chips - always soft & fluffy - & the fish/sausages always taste fresh to me. There are ebbs & flows with service, depending how busy they are (they cater for dine in, take-always & multi delivery services) but I have always found the service friendly. Much loved by the locals, which says it all!!

The venue is good. Pretty busy most evenings, a jolly mix of local people. Service is good but the fish is sometimes not fresh. The mussles are always good.

The customer service at this place is very poor, the staff do not acknowledge you when you are at the till. They completely ignored me while I waited at the till ready to order my food, I stood there for about 5 mins and there were more than 5 member of staff behind the counter and not one of them acknowledged me until I ask them If they would serve me, the lady I asked to serve me responded “as you can see we are busy you will have to wait”. I didn’t understand why they just wouldn’t take my order. They need to re-train the stuff at this branch. Disappointing!

Estuve aquí en NYE desde que se cerró el templo de Seitán. Cuando entré había una fuerte y desagradable música tecno pop que resonaba en el comedor. Cuando le mencioné al personal que la música era tan alta que casi no podía oírme a mí misma, creo que la mujer simplemente dijo "pero es NYE". Entiendo eso, pero me gustaría mantener mi audición y cordura para el próximo año. Conseguí papas fritas y me senté usando mis auriculares para apagar el ruido mientras comía. Al salir me di cuenta de que había opciones específicas veganas que no tuve la oportunidad de ver. La hamburguesa que tenía que ir era bastante buena, pero no tan buena como el templo de Seitán. Encontré el ambiente estresante e incómodo, pero la comida no es mala.

Came for dinner with a friend & her baby. Not an ideal start as the baby seat was broken so baby couldn’t be strapped in & we later found out it had been stored in the toilet! So the entire meal was spent holding the baby in.

Suttons also own the local fish shop in Stoke Newington and it is this adherence to quality that sets this fish and chip shop a notch higher than the many splendid options in Hackney.

I was extremely disappointed with a deiveroo order from Sutton and Sons Stoke newington. I was so excited when a taxi driver told me this place in Stokey does nice fish and chip cooked fresh as all the fish shops where I live in Highbury are bad so I was looking forward to my first fish and chips in a long time. I ordered large cod and large chips and a chicken and mush pie for the adults and a separate thin fries and sausage for kids. And hour later deliveoo delivered my order. I commented straight away on how nicely packaged the bag was as it was stapled shut on the top with the receipt attached. On opening the order we had the fries ordered for kids but not the large chips which were on the receipt. I called Sutton and Sons to which an abrubt man said we packed them nothing to do with us I then explained the bag was stapled neatly shut so deiveroo could not of stole or lost the chips and they were not in the bag he just repeatedly said we packed them call deiveroo. I was left with a nice tasting but now cold fish NO CHIPS COSTING £4.20 and a chicken pie with dry pastry beyond belief but tasty filling. Terrible customer service, disappointing experience.i really hoped I had solved the lack of decent chip shops around here only to find great fish, no chips and service of a I don't care attitude. What a shame!!!

Me and my BFF were visiting from America and we wanted to try Sutton and Sons because I am vegetarian and my BFF loves sausage and chips. I was going to try the Vegan fish and chips. We were staying on Abbey Road in London. We walked and were on and off buses during rush hour, which quite awhile... When we arrived the Sutton and Son's shop had a stool in the doorway. I peeked my head in and asked if they were closing. The lady behind the counter said " No but our oil fryers went down and it would take about 30 minutes for them to heat up." I asked if they would be open after that and she said "yes". ( I should have relied on her none verbal communication because you could tell her and the other workers wanted to close early because is was 8:00pm on a Friday night.) I told her we would go have a drink at the pub down the street and would be back in 30 Minutes. She said that would be good. We returned at 9:00 pm and the stool was still there but all employees were in a mad rush to clean everything. I asked just to make sure and she said, sorry we are closing and didn't give any reason. We knew it was because they wanted the early Friday night off. I am sad we missed out and If we return we will not give this place a chance because we not only wasted time getting there but we also wasted our time waiting for them to reopen. I don't know about how the food tastes and I never will, but I can say poor customer service!

After seeing it on "BBC Click" in Canada we knew we had to try the Vegan Fish and Chips. So our first meal in the UK was Vegan Fish and Chips and it was great.

Went here to try out their vegan fish and chips and was very impressed. The team are lovely and friendly, they were very happy to answer any questions we had about their food and how they made the vegan 'fish' etc. We had the vegan prawn cocktail and fish cakes to start and for our mains we had fish and sausage with chips. It was all very tasty and this will be somewhere we will visit many times again.

Thought it was well average. If you compare it to fish and chips in the north, it doesn’t come close. London can’t do fish and chips for some reason… Tasted fresh though and wasn’t greasy. Just didn’t really have any flavour. Service was good.

When in London, we always look for good fish & chips. Sutton's is delicious since they fry it right in front of you. The chips weren't as crunchy but was still delicious. Very affordable and they take only cash. Highly recommend.

He estado queriendo probar este pescado y patatas fritas para edades después he estado siguiendo ellos en Instagram por algún tiempo y ver los puestos de pescado fresco. Esta es la sucursal en Essex Road. Precioso lugar acogedor, limpio, y el personal es amable en mi primera observación.

As usual the food was excellent I particularly recommend the fish pie, and the sorbet for dessert. Will definitely come back again.

Estupendo encontrar un menú vegetariano en un pescado y patatas; las patatas fritas eran un poco floja (podría hacer con un poco más de tiempo en la freidora mejillones mariniere) y la más buena que era fantástico, pero el servicio es agradable, un gran ambiente y un menú grande y tentador. Después de ver una revisión y he probado varios lugares para versiones alternativas de "pescado" vegana que decidí probarlo. Que estaba bien pero morder, es un producto raro stringey aceitosa, sabe un poco dulce pero sin duda no vale la pena levantarse de nuevo. Sólo en efectivo, impuestos probablemente esquivando, el servicio era lento, no estoy seguro de si estaban en experiencia laboral, aléjate, ya que hay muchas opciones mejores digno de tomar su dinero ganado duramente.

Cuando el segundo vegano salchicha maltratadas llegó era totalmente distinto. De inmediato nos sentimos todos como si sólo puedo entender cuando no come carne y se da cuenta de que puede tener accidentalmente hecho. Llamamos a la camarera, ella dijo que preguntaría. Volvió y dijo que sí, el 1 salchichas de la calle no era vegetariano. Cuando mi esposo me dijo cómo fue este horrible y qué es lo que el gerente decir ella dijo que volvería a ir y comprobar. Regresó y dijo que ella me había dicho el director y él dijo, "no hay nada que podamos hacer al respecto ahora". Ni disculpa, ni comprensión. Cuando mi marido llamó a su vuelta más y pedí hablar con el gerente nos estaban esperando unos 5 minutos. Resultó que a ella no le había dicho antes, él había sido informado sólo. Él era un chico agradable y es realmente lamentable, pero al final del día no sirven comida vegetariana si no puedo separar adecuadamente. Nos confiaron en lo que estábamos comiendo era vegetariano. He sido vegetariana durante 15 años y 2 de vegetariana para aquellos - saber esta es la primera vez que me he comido un animal en 15 años es bastante molesto y saber mi hijo de 3 años tiene demasiado es la evisceración. Mi marido nunca había comido cerdo antes. Me siento bastante desagradable hasta devastadas teniendo en cuenta baja quién sabe qué salchicha de carne es probablemente mi mayor pesadilla para cualquiera de nosotros que hemos comido. Como camarera generalmente no le gusta quejarse, pero por desgracia nuestra visita de hoy fue un poco decepcionante.

Excellent food, great service the fish pie in particular and the sorbet for afters. A really nice restaurant to enjoy a catch up with a friend and friendly / good but unobtrusive service. Will definitely be back soon.

Really great fish and chip shop, with a modern twist. The fish comes from the family's fishmonger across the road so you're in 'catch of the day' territory. Anything can be either deep fried or grilled and the execution is uniformly excellent. Great chips - proper size and shape, not greasy or soggy, piping hot. Unique home made pickles such as onion rings made to their secret recipe which I love though I usually detest vinegar. Friendly informal service. NB It's cash only, no cards - but there's an ATM a couple of doors away.

I passed by this place a lot of times and tempted by people's dishes. Beforehand I hardly could trust fish'n chip shops, too much oil, batter and stale frozen fish. (I still don't!)

Friendly attentive staff. Great menu with lots of choices. We went for oysters, crab cakes, lobster soup followed by wild halibut and battered Christmas pud, all delicious. All washed down with a bottle of Chardonnay. Faultless.

Went here before the near Hackney Empire panto. There is a small seating area - it's crowded and people queue but it's well worth the wait as the fish and chips are freshly cooked and really delicious.

Me and my sister went in this small restaurant during our first trip to London to eat a traditional fish and chips. The place is nice and cozy, the fish was well cooked; we also drunk two local beers that were really good. On the menu there are also different type of fish to choose and many burgers. All things considered it is a great place!

Questo piccolo ristorantino può apparire come una friggitoria di altri tempi ma offre molto di più che solo Fish and chips (comunque ottimo!). Sia lo spada che il monkfish alla griglia erano molto saporiti, cosi come gli asparagi di mare (samphyre) e le capesante. Anche il caffè, consigliato dal cameriere italiano, era buono!

He tenido comida varias veces y siempre ha sido una buena experiencia, soy quisquillosa pero siempre hay una gran elección de alterbatives. Recomiendo recommenf. Personal muy amable y servicial y agradable lugar para siy fuera en la carretera en los ocasionales día soleado.

Comido aquí dos veces y 3 veces, no dar hasta ahora, así que nunca más.
