Sutherland House in Waveney

This is an interesting restaurant - small and with friendly staff. Food was very good - we particularly enjoyed the sharing dessert platter. The only issue we had was that choice of courses, perhaps unsurprisingly given the size of the restaurant, was a little limited - good choice of fish and vegetarian dishes but limited meat options and one or two surprising combinations. Worth looking at the menu online before you book in case you don’t fancy enough choices.

Quality, choice and freshness of the food was amazing. Service was top notch, Andy is such a great host. Combination of flavours and quality of preparations and cooking made the whole experience something special. Cannot fault anything with the whole experience, one of the best meals we have ever had. Would definitely recommend and will be coming back I the future. Thank you to the whole team at Sutherland House for making this a really special weekend.

We stayed for two nights in early October. The garden room was spacious and very comfortable. Good shower and super clean bathroom. The food was the highlight and quite outstanding, especially the tetura broccoli stems and the monkfish wellington. The menu as a whole was enticing. Excellent breakfast, again with a very good choice and perfectly cooked and presented. Highly recommended.

Another amazing meal and evening there. Food outstanding and cooked to perfection. We struggle to choose from the menu as everything is so delicious sounding. Service efficient and friendly. Highly recommend to anyone visiting Southwold or local area.

We enjoyed another wonderful evening at Sutherland House last week. Our go-to place for celebration meals. This restaurant has the perfect balance of delicious, inventive food, beautifully prepared and presented, attentive yet unobtrusive servers and a charming dining room with a relaxed atmosphere and gentle background music. I went onto the website to make an online booking as a solo traveller. Up popped the message. 'Unfortunately your party is too small to make an online booking'. So I can't tell you about the quality of the food or the service as they clearly don't want solo diners.

This restaurant was very welcoming with an excellent menu. Service was great and staff were attentive and chatty. The food was exceptional, far the best sampled during our short stay in Southwold. The dining room was cosy and comfortable and overall the dining experience was excellent. Thoroughly recommend and will most definitely revisit on our next visit to lovely Southwold.

Wonderful meal - a great menu making it difficult to make choices. Starting with the scallops got the taste buds alive and ready for more. Monkfish Wellington was a delicious choice and the pork belly just melted in the mouth leaving lovely flavours. Sides of green beans and new potatoes were a good choice leaving room for delicious desserts (cheesecake and creme brûlée). Had not planned on a flight of three whiskies but will think ahead for the next visit!

Amazing tasty food - great service which is reasonably priced. The restaurant is beautifully situated in a lovely old period building with each table perfectly spaced to allow for a private dining experience. Sutherland House is without a doubt my favourite restaurant. It always delivers high quality food which the owners take pride in producing. Needless to say I will be back. Thank you!

This place is great, designed for adult couples with one table of four (no children), it’s atmosphere is great irrespective of where you sit. If your lucky, in the summer you will be sitting in a loverly covered garden, if the suns isn’t out, you will enjoy the fine dining experience in a beautiful dinning room. Husband and wife team with so many awards. Despite focusing on the fish and vegetarian options, there is plenty of choice. Andy’s Scottish so try not to upset him by ordering JD… you have been warned. Enjoy and highly recommended

Had a wonderful meal at Sutherland House. It is a very historic building with a lovely ambiance. Andy the owner was very welcoming and a most convivial host. The food itself was exceptional - I had the scallops followed by pork belly - cooked to perfection. I couldn’t have had a nicer meal or a better experience for my 60th birthday. Will definitely be back.

Beautifully presented and really delicious food in a lovely garden setting. We were also very impressed with the care and attention to detail for dining in the current covid environment. The restaurateurs have thought though the experience and turned their outside area into a cosy and comfortable place to eat. But above all, the food was really excellent. We were lucky to get a cancellation...book well in advance.

We enjoyed an anniversary meal at Sutherland House last night.The tables are set within wooden cabins around a large tree in their pretty garden. Everything possible had been done to make guests feel relaxed and Covid safe.The food, wine, service and atmosphere were all excellent. The husband and wife team owners work extremely hard to make sure every guest feels special and has the best experience possible. Book in advance, you won’t be disappointed.

Just had an excellent meal at the Sutherland this evening. The fish options on the menu were all amazing, we had 4 separate fish options between two of us and all were excellent. Can’t wait to eat here again! You need to book well in advance, there is a very good reason for that! Best restaurant in Southwold.

My better half organised a surprise overnight stay for my 50th at the Sutherland Hotel and we also had the meal there. The restaurant (due to covid) currently operates outside with some wonderfully purpose built seating areas which provided intimacy, a lovely ambience and atmosphere you could only ask for. The staff/owners were very friendly, made us feel very welcome. Covid measures are necessary but did not get in the way of the evening, well managed.The menu choice is small but that generally signals freshness and quality...and yep delivered on both. Food is fantastic!The service was perfect, good timing between courses.We thoroughly enjoyed our 3 courses and drinks, we'll definitely recommend Sutherland's to anyone and everyone.Thanks Matt and Sarah

The team at Sutherland House have worked very hard to keep their customers safe. I’m not ordinarily a fan of eating outside but you get all the benefits of being inside in your mini cabin booths for two whilst enjoying being in a lovely garden. Service was swift, an excellent wine list and food was great. I would recommend this restaurant for a relaxing but romantic evening. Even better if you love fish. Puddings were amazing.

Lovely 3 night stay at our favourite hotel.Great breakfasts and great evening meal in the purpose built sheltered tables in the garden.Good scallops and monkfish starters and main courses of halibut and cod plus delicious desserts.Andy makes a lot of effort and in covid times it was all well managed and safe.Had fab weather to top it off and even swam in the sea. Lovely being based so centrally to access the beautiful Southwold.

We had a lovely meal for our anniversary, the food was amazing, I chose both a fish starter and main and my wife had vegan starter and main. The outside dining pods are incredibly well thought out.

Had heard wonderful reviews of Sutherland House and booked months in advance of our trip. From the moment we arrived we were made to feel uncomfortable. The fish I ordered was really overcooked and dry. The sauce was tasteless. Would be good if there was middle range wines. Instead of the wonderful experience we were looking forward to, we hurried our meal and left to have dessert at our hotel.

Lovely evening meal.On our final evening of our week in Southwold we visited Sutherland House. Though the weather was damp and dismal, the food and ambiance at Sutherland House was was very warm and welcoming. Service from Andy and and his wife was excellent and the quality of the food, superb. Thanks for all your Covid protocols!

The food was very good. The service was excellent. The last of the evening sun and distant church bells created a memorable ambience.

Due to Covid outdoor setting in “beach huts” - cozy but a bit chilly! Good menu choices, good wine list. Excellent scallop starter, good main courses with well prepared sides. Very good puddings to finish. Attentive helpful staff. All in all highly recommended

The food was excellent we had one of the fish courses on the menu it was delicious although not a vast menu you had choice of two fish one meat and two vegetarian. Served in the garden in private pods catering for approximately 24 guests each party having their own pods, it is a small garden surrounded by houses so you have to leave by 9pm so that's why the last sitting was 7pm the service was fast and efficient so you did not feel rushed . The dessert we had was the chocolate torte and this again was excellent, together with our sauvignon blanc wine this was a very pleasant experience at a reasonable price. Would highly recommend this restaurant if you are visiting the area.

I very rarely review but we had such a fantastic meal for my birthday I wanted to share this gem of a restaurant. The food is as best as you would get in any top London restaurant, reasonably priced and with such friendly and welcoming service. Lovely outdoor setting in very cosy and warm wooden pods, super COVID safe and even in the May cold and rain it was such a great night. Thanks to Andy and his team for making my birthday treat so special! Highly recommend!

Had a very nice experience at Sutherland House the other evening. Despite near gale force winds the outdoor seating was surprisingly sheltered. The team was very welcoming and explained the COVID rules very clearly. As for the food, well this was delicious. We both ate fish choosing scallops and monkfish goujons followed by a Thai style dish and a crab crusted halibut. Delicious but not overpowering flavours and beautifully presented. Had a great chat with the owner about sailing to top off a lovely, if somewhat windswept evening

The perfect birthday evening! My boyfriend booked Sutherland House to celebrate my birthday and it was the perfect setting with amazing food. Cute outdoor cabins with heaters nearby to keep you warm. The staff were super friendly and the food was outstanding. Highly recommend the bread and butter pudding!!

On holiday - at last! - for a week in Reydon and booked a table at Sutherland based on prior on-line research and their appealing outdoor space. It was really excellent with great service, delicious food and good wine.

Wonderful. So nice to be able to eat out again. The garden has carefully spaced areas for each couple. Food was amazing.

A beautiful, ultra clean (Covid compliant) garden eating area and the food was sooo good and fairly priced. The monk fish and scallops were amazing, as was the vegetarian mushroom Wellington. Great wine list also. Cant wait to go back! The Shepherds.

The food was truly out of this world, and this was a meal which will be very difficult to beat. We sat in the outside booths which despite being a little chilly, provided a romantic setting for our 20th wedding anniversary. We had an excellent meal at Sutherland House. The adaptations for Covid were really thoughtful, thorough and well done, with wooden booths all around the edge of the garden. The monkfish goujons were just amazing - I could have eaten them till I burst. I had sole and my husband the pork dish, and again, these were excellent. Great wine to accompany the meal and friendly service. It must be a pain to have to repeat the system that has to be in place, but it didn’t come over that way and we felt very relaxed as a result of all the thought that has gone into being able to reopen. If we lived nearer than 4 hours away we’d be back like a shot!

A very enjoyable outdoor dining experience. Food & service were fantastic. A limited menu but good local fresh produce served. The fish dishes were absolutely superb. And a good wine list and value for money too. Hope to be able to come back again soon.

We have eaten in this restaurant before and never been disappointed. We have also eaten outside in the specially designed wooden pods before too. However this was our first experience in spring weather on the first night they reopened after lockdown. The meal was exceptional. All my food was piping hot which you appreciate outside on a cold clear night. Monkfish starter is a good choice and a generous portion size. The halibut was very good too as were the desserts. The restaurant has some good wines to choose from and reasonably priced. The owners have gone to a lot of trouble to be Covid compliant to the letter which we really appreciated. We can’t wait to return. Service was excellent. They have also started to offer more vegetarian and vegan meals inspired by Sir David Attenborough-the owner has a letter from him in the restaurant.If a cool night I would suggest wrapping up well. We had 4 layers on top but wish we had done as a couple opposite and brought coats and a blanket. The owners have strategically placed heaters but it can get pretty cold if sat down for a couple of hours at this time of year. I guess us British will take a while to work out what to wear for outside dining. We could learn a lot from the Scandinavians.

Had a lovely meal on 21st April, the food and wine was excellent in purpose built dining. We appreciated the friendly and helpful staff and quality generous portions. Had a wonderful night after so long . X

Dinner is now served in a lovely outdoor setting with individual wooden booths - it all felt very Covid safe. Staff were very welcoming and attentive. The food was outstanding - I had scallops to start, followed by pork and then the famous bread and butter pudding for dessert. We had a lovely English sparkling wine followed by a very pleasant Sicilian wine off the extensive wine menu. Can’t wait to visit again in May.

This year had been one of the toughest for those in the hospitality industry but I can honestly say Sutherland House has shown that it is possible to come out even stronger. When it would be easy to just do the basics, the team go the extra mile to make sure guests feel welcome in some of the best COVID secure settings I have come across. Given the restrictions they have had to limit it to breakfast service for guests but we weren’t disappointed. The genuine interest and care for each guest was clear. Andy is a brilliant host and really helped to make our trip an enjoyable one! We will definitely be back and look forward to enjoying the rest of the food once they can open up fully again. If breakfast is anything to go by then it will be fantastic!

We hesitate to post a less than totally positive review, as we are sure that everyone at Sutherland House is doing their best in very difficult times, BUT ........As a previous reviewer has mentioned, all eating establishments have had to adapt to Covid regulations, but most have managed to do it in a way where the customer still feels welcome & relatively relaxed. Sadly, last night we just ended up feeling like a massive inconvenience. That said, the food was good & there was nothing actually wrong with the service, but when they reopen after this next lockdown we hope they find a way of making sure everyone stays safe without feeling on edge & uncomfortable

Stayed at Sutherland House for 3 nights. Room excellent, spacious, well appointed and clean. Bath/shower a little neat but fine. Breakfast outstanding. Dinner very good. We visited for my husbands birthday and had a lovely time. The halibut was particularly good and we enjoyed all the food. The staff were attentive and they have an excellent procedure in place to cope with covid.

We visited Southerland House for dinner and as usual the food atmosphere and service where excellent. The seared tuna and seabass fillet followed by an orange creme hit the spot. Highly recommended this well run and safe restaurant 👌 Lorraine

Great location, venue and food. Unfortunately it felt a bit like being in a military camp. Yes we understand the importance of sanitiser and temp checks however having been to a lot of restaurants since lockdown the atmosphere in each of these places is still much the same and you are still made to feel welcome. It was just pretty abrupt service and felt more like a transaction of us needing to eat rather than a relaxed enjoyable evening which for a birthday celebration was disappointing given the food was superb. Also no background music which would have made a big difference.

We ventured here on a recent week-end in Southwold (having booked quite a long time in advance). Upon entering, the social restriction arrangements were thorough without feeling too onerous (a temp check, some screens, making sure we wore masks and hand sanitizer available). Well spaced tables and an introduction about how the QR code worked to see the menu and put in the first order.Every table was occupied, but we were well spaced and it all was very comfortable.The food was excellent. Not only a fairly large and varied menu, but very good. Moules and salt & pepper squid as our starters, with steak and halibut for mains. A couple of nice G&Ts to start, a bottle of nice white wine and glass of Malbec with the steak were all good quality and a sensible price.All of the team on duty got the balance right of attentive, but not in your face and they seemed to work very well together and complimented each other well.With 5 tables in our area, we all ended up having a large discussion with the owner at one point and we didn’t realise there would be an impromptu cabaret thrown in!!All in all, a really nice night, good staff, good food and good Covid precautions. We look forward to our next visit

This is a lovely restaurant well worth a visit if you can get in, pre booking essential. The restrictions were taken very seriously, the menu is on your phone so all drink & food orders Are done this way. The staff are very attentive & the food is absolutely wonderful.

Visited the Sutherland for my 60th birthday meal - should have been in Italy!! From the outset the staff were very accomodating and the initial Covid temperature checks and guidelines were carried out very thoroughly and reassuringly.We were very happy ordering on their app from the table. The seared Tuba was scrumptious. My wife thoroughly enjoyed the halibut and I had one of the best cooked sirloin steaks I have had for a long time.The Creme Brulee finished the evening off delightfully. Enjoyed the experience so much delighted to be going back in 2 days. Thank you for a great evening and making a big birthday really memorable.

Disappointed. We had booked as we were staying local and when we arrived our temperatures were taken with reading a ranging from 32-37 degrees. With wives as nurses that became an interesting discussion. Whilst the staff were diligent the simple ask for tap water was met with the reply ‘we can’t serve tap water as it’s government guidelines. We can’t recycle it’. I pointed out that we had been up for five days and every pub hotel and restaurant had given us either a jug or poured water for us. We ordered a starter and I had Lobster. This was the smallest lobster I had eaten in forty years being only 2cms in thickness. The other meals were served in bowls which was just unnecessary as was pointed out by the couple sitting next to us. The final straw was the staff obviously not coordinated and being asked the same questions about drinks and food and having to point out that we had already ordered. We have up. Laid and left. We were more of an inconvenience than a client.

We enjoyed a superb evening, the service was impeccable in nice surroundings. The menu was very varied and the food was brilliant and very memorable. We would definitely return.

We have been visiting Southwold for about ten years. We have been to Sutherland House every time. Sometimes twice. The food and service are excellent. It's probably my favourite restaurant in the country.This time the mussels were the best I have ever eaten and the hot crab was a revelation.

Visited mid September. Booked well in advance. Saturday night.We ate out in the garden as shown in some pictures. It was a warm evening so quite pleasant but will clearly not work for next 6 months or so. It was a bit like eating in your garden shed but as I say pretty clever and well organised.Food ordering was via your phone and worked very well.Food came swiftly and was very good. I had grilled crab and steak, both of which were excellent. Mrs W enjoyed hers too.Service was good and we would certainly return.

We stayed 4 nights in the hotel and had breakfast every day and one meal in the evening (we would have done more - be warned! Book in advance). The hotel is really interesting and decor is lovely and kept really clean. The staff were all so accommodating and helpful. Given the Covid times Andy and team are doing their best to provide a first class service. The food was wonderful. Clearly attention paid to quality and hats off to the chef.

In these difficult times it is so satisfying to find a place that is exceptional from both an accommodation and cuisine perspective. The online apps made the checkin and check out experience super easy, and dinner on our last night was really special. Whole heartedly recommend.

A very warm welcome that more than compensated for a chilly evening. The food was fantastic - with so many tempting options on the menu, my partner and I shared starters starters, mains and pudding to prevent food envy and get the full experience. The tuna and halibut were particularly fine. The owners were great and a lot of thought had gone into making everything Covid secure. We look forward to visiting again when the weather is warmer and there are fewer restrictions

Stayed for 2 nights, very clean, safe and secure. Owners have put in a lot of hard work and effort to achieve this in these strange times. We stayed in Thomas Camell and room was functional with excellent linen and towels. The smallest room but perfect description on hotel website but totally adequate.

Our first return to this lovely restaurant post lockdown. The changes they have made to make the restaurant COVID secure are lovely, with individual booths in wooden cabins in the garden surrounding a beautiful tree have added another dimension to the place which will surely add to their capacity once social distancing regulations are lifted. The ambience was lovely and the food was excellent as ever. We visited on a chilly September evening but heaters were provided- would just suggest bringing along wraps/shawls in case the heaters aren’t sufficient. Only disappointment was not being able to book for our next visit in October as they only have one table of 4 and one of 3 at the moment, but we’ll definitely be back when we’re next in Suffolk .

We stayed here and had a fantastic 5* meal in the restaurant.It was a bit weird not being able to enter the hotel through the front but had to use the back entrance I suspect due to COVID. The staff were friendly but had we not eaten in the restaurant I wouldn’t have seen them at all as all communication was via email.My husband was able to ask and get replenishments of coffee and water without any problem.The room wasn’t cleaned during our stay, again because of COVID.The room itself was a bit tired and dated, especially the bathroom. However the bed was very comfortable with lovely clean white crisp sheets and duvet. I wouldn’t have thought this was a five star hotel.

Had another amazing meal at Sutherland House last night. Andy and the team have done a great job adapting to the social distancing rules, eating in the garden was atmospheric and safe.The food was fresh, exciting and tasty, I had the grilled Cromer crab and my other half had the mussels. Both were perfect. We both had the wild sea bass for main course. Exactly as Andy described, a thick meaty fillet, crispy skin and chunky flaky fish. The samphire was a perfect accompaniment. I had the classic marmalade bread and butter pudding, somehow my hubby managed to get a spoon to share it. I need to find out how that happened The best fine dining food in Southwold, can’t wait to go again next weekend. Thank you Andy and the team.

The two of us visited here for dinner earlier this week (8th Sept), and it could not have been done any better. Firstly on arrival you are greeted at the bar area where you are informed of the set up. As we are in September, you will dine in the garden where it is set out so you practically have your own dining area. Perfect for couples who if like myself like a little privacy.Patio heaters throughout and quite protected from any wind so not cold, but remember dining in the evening in September you may want a jumper or something. Things are different now and if you not been out to eat for a while please know that you can not just turn up and walk around back and forth like we all could 9 months ago. I think from October they planning to go back inside.You will be seated at you table and be shown and informed of how the order process happens. Nothing to be fazed by, its just different.The menu is viewed via the camera on your smart phone, so your experience will be made so much easier if you have one of these with you. The service is excellent everything explained clearly and any queries answered, the couple that run it really know their stuff but they are not at all stuffy about it, so for example if you not sure about something ask, and if there is something on a dish that you may not like then ask them to leave it off. We been here many times now over a few years and NEVER had a bad meal or experience. Even in these challenging times the quality of the food has not gone down.Plenty to choose from especially for fish lovers. But we both choose as our main dish pork fillet and black pudding wellington, and it was delicious.All in all service excellent food excellent,3 courses each, Glass of fizz and a St Peters cider (highly recommend) bottle of wine. £114 all in.Just make sure you book well in advance!!

Booked in advance for our first Southwold trip. So pleased we went. Outdoor set up is Covid safe, and very pleasant in your own open hut. The food and service were exceptional. Every course so tasty. Highly recommended.

Perfect evening in such a wonderful, newly built outdoor seating area. Intimate booths for 2 (1 able to take 4 and another 3 which we occupied) allowed you to feel totally Covid safe. The garden was beautifully lit and full of colour. The lengths this restaurant had gone to protect its diners and staff where exemplary and way beyond other venues. The food was outstanding all ordered via a menu available from an app based system. A very extensive wine list - we chose a very nice Lugana wine. The lobster and chips were the best we’ve ever had. Add to that the wonderful welcome and service from our hosts - what more could you ask for. This was our first meal out after lockdown and was well worth waiting for. It was such a special evening - we can’t wait to visit again. This outdoor area is a great addition to this great restaurant.

As always, Sutherland House sets new high standards for Southwold fine dining. The new outdoor seating area, introduced in response to the pandemic, is delightful - it is sheltered, and is a great addition to the restaurant. The menu is varied and professionally prepared, service is friendly and welcoming without being intrusive, wine recommendations are expert, and the general ambience made for a very special meal. It's worth booking early - the restaurant is justifiably popular. We had an excellent evening.

After 5 months of not eating out we booked our table and we were left so happy. Perfect dressed crab, steak cooked to perfection and the chocolate ganache was incredible. Amazing, fast service and the perfect Covid-friendly environment to enjoy it. Lovey atmosphere and will definitely be returning. Thank you for a wonderful night x

We had such a lovely evening. Firstly the hosts were so welcoming and attentive throughout the night. They should be applauded for taking the on challenge of social distancing and providing an environment that is very safe whilst somehow creating a wonderful and enchanting atmosphere. The dining is currently in the garden area and the owners have built separate wooden , pods/booths , around the side of a lovely little garden . Under cover and with some nice lighting and heaters we felt very pampered and looked after. It had a lovely feel once it got dark. Menus and ordering worked very smoothly from an app based system from our table. We had to leave by 9 pm to avoid disturbing neighbours but with the sitting starting at 6:30 /6:45 then we never felt rushed. And so to the food. Excellent. Fresh, top quality ingredients cooked well. I had Cromer crab followed by a very good steak. My wife had mussels followed by sea bass which she very much enjoyed. Good sized portions and lovingly presented. Deserts did not disappoint, my bread and butter pudding one the best I have eaten. The wine list looked pretty solid and our Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc was excellent value for money. All in all a splendid evening. We will definitely be back when we next return to Suffolk.

Another fantastic meal at Sutherland House last evening. Starters of mussels, baked crab and tuna. The mussels were astounding and a wonderful sauce, yum. Main courses of lobster and wild sea bass. Fantastic. A lovely Sicilian white wine accompanied the food perfectly. The garden setting is still perfect, Covid secure and very relaxing. We look forward to our next visit.

Newly designed open sided wood cubby holes make a lovely and Covid safe dining environment in the garden. The service is very friendly and efficient but most importantly the food is excellent. We had the pan seared halibut which was cooked to perfection with delicious accompaniments.

What a lovely solution for social distancing and unpredictable English weather! Love the individual open fronted cabins in the garden, perfect when the rain started yesterday evening. Very easy to order food and drinks via the App and service very prompt. However the real highlight was the food!! Starters of Pig Cheeks and Grilled Crab were divine, mains of whole lobster (so fresh and tasty) and a fantastic Halibut dish, we were in complete food heaven. Do book for Sutherland House if you are visiting Southwold, definitely a delight not to be missed.

From start to finish, this was a lovely meal. Very welcoming staff (husband and wife duo). The food was delicious and the outdoor seating arrangements felt cosy, private and safe.

Had a lovely very comfortable stay in the John Sutherland Suite. Very large & comfortable lounge area. Big enough to socially distance with family for drinks. Family member also had the garden room, so we all had the best of both worlds. Dined in garden for two nights, very safe socially distanced from other diners.

We had a wonderful meal in the covered garden Covid safe pods. The staff were delightful even when my steam driven phone couldn’t access the Menu.The food was fabulous .A brilliant crab starter followed by sumptuous sea bass and a Halibut dish with the most delicious sauce ever.We even made room for a dessert, may not need to eat tomorrow! A portion of the signature dish, bread and butter pudding with a crunchy topping accompanied by vintage marmalade ice cream and an orange Creme brûlée with shortbread were the finale to our fantastic birthday feast.The people who didn’t show up tonight just didn’t know what they were missing and should be ashamed of themselves.I would ban them for life it’s so unfair to the hard working restauranteurs. If they failed to turn up for a dental appointment they would no doubt be fined!

What a lovely dinner! SH has built little wooden booths in the garden so it feels cosy, safe and weather sure in the pretty garden. We had lovely food, excellent and not over-priced wine and friendly service. Highly recommend.

This was our first meal out since lockdown for my birthday. The outside pods in the very pretty garden were really well done, private and comfortable. The food and service was excellent and the entire evening was lovely and slightly different.

First proper date night for such a long time. Arrived not knowing what to expect but everything had been thought through, be it the greeting all the way to menu etc. Wonderful.And there food in the garden was exceptional. Each course was perfect accompanied by great wine. Service was brill.Will be booking to visit again. Thanks.

Had dinner at Sutherland House last Saturday. It was a wet evening but we were kept dry in the lovely wooden pods that have been built in the garden. The food was great and the waiter was welcoming and cheery (despite getting a bit wet). Would highly recommend.

We have been to Sutherland House a few times over the past few years when in Southwold for Latitude weekend.No festival this year but the food and service here was as excellent as ever.Andy has built lovely dining pods in the garden and put lots of safety measures in place.Highly recommended

Me and my partner visited Sutherland House for dinner on Sunday evening and had a lovely time. The new outside dining area was great and had such a lovely atmosphere. You can see they have made so much effort to make your visit enjoyable.We had three courses and they were all delicious and the bottle of white wine was just perfect, along with that the service was spot on. We cannot wait to come and visit again!

We booked a weekend away to escape the city whilst covid-lockdown restrictions were being relaxed. A little concerned, as our first stay away since March, wasn't sure what to expect, how well establishments would be handling the changes and worried that our trip would feel impersonal with everything managed by app. We had nothing to worry about! Check-in was efficient and we felt safe that management had gone to great measures to assure the safety of visitors and staff, without it feeling officious. We had booked the smallest room, but that was absolutely fine for us.Our room was lovely and cosy (a little too warm the first night, but that's summer!) and a perfect base for beautiful Southwold. Breakfast was wonderful, all the ingredients of the full English of an exceptional standard.We booked a meal for the Sunday night, which was absolutely amazing. The prices a little higher than I would usually pay, but Southwold in general isn't a cheap resort and the standard of the food and cooking more than justified the cost - particularly given the efforts the owner has gone to to ensure a safe dining environment. I loved the outdoor canopied areas which had been constructed to serve customers outdoors whilst still protected from the elements. Dining in the restaurant also gave us the opportunity to meet Andy, the restaurant/accommodation owner, who made us feel so welcome, such fantastic personal service which he gives to all his guests.It was my first visit to this part of the coast and absolutely loved it. I wouldn't hesitate to stay at Sutherland House again should we come back to explore further.

Whilst we appreciated the effort Andy had gone to by installing the wooden huts to facilitate outside dining, I’m afraid it wasn’t for us. We dined on a chilly evening and had to sit in our jackets. We did not feel we could linger as we were told the owner’s children were inside waiting to go home. We sat at wooden picnic tables- not very comfortable, were not offered a pre dinner drink or any nibbles and ordered through the App. The food when it came - steak- was ok but of pub grub standard. It was not the fine dining experience we were looking forward to despite the prices charged.I am sure the owner will take issue with my comments as he does not take criticism very well.To sum up, the food was overpriced for what it was, the outside dining was uncomfortable and we would not return

This was our first visit to Sutherland House and we loved it! The food was incredible and Andy and Kinga have gone above and beyond to ensure everyone’s safety in these strange times. The booths outside were really comfortable and patio heaters kept us warm on a cold evening. It was such a lovely way to eat tremendous quality food and the personal service added to a great evening. Andy has thought of everything to keep everyone safe, without compromising the overall eating experience. We should all be supporting local businesses who have gone to so much effort to ensure our safety. We will definitely be recommending it to all our friends - thank you for a first class dining experience and fabulous food. Would highly recommend the seared tuna, stuffed squid and orange brûlée. We can’t wait to return.

Andy and Kinga have done an amazing job creating the dining booths in the garden. The food was amazing as ever, especially the seared tuna and pan fried squid. We couldn’t resist the bread and butter pudding with marmalade ice cream. The only down side is that the restaurant is fully booked this week so we will be back on our next visit to Southwold.

Outstanding in every respect. The hospitality was great; the food was delicious (Norwegian Halibut was divine). Go here, and have a great culinary evening.
