Same owner/people running Kanpai in Castle Terrace, which is arguably the best sushi restaurant in Scotland. Sushiya is a little gem hidden to the public, but a great place to go as the staff is attentive (the waitresses barely speak English so be nice with them). Quick advice if you forgot to book, as it is usually full, they do take aways! :-).

Having walked past this sushi house in the past in favour of 'the one my friend likes' I thought I would stop by on my way to a meeting last night. Getting through the ugly door is the biggest hurdle. Once inside, a lovely, warm, calming atmosphere allows you to peruse your menu in peace. I can only comment on the dishes I had, which were excellent. Miso, bang on. Very fresh, not salty, gorgeous seaweed and tiny tofu pieces. The salmon was super, super fresh, and the dumplings were delish. Had I had more time I would have ordered more. The staff were excellent from start to finish. Definitely returning!

Second time at this place and yet again I was happy with the food and service. The place is small and it filled up pretty quickly but the service was fast. I had the Traditional Pork Ramen, Tokyo Roll and the Dragon Roll. The sushi was good and fresh. I will admit however, I don't think it quite compares to other places in Edinburgh, but its still good. The Pork Ramen was delicious, really cant fault it, the broth was thick, creamy and had a rich porky flavour and there were plenty of noodles within, which I really like.

We popped into Sushiya on Friday for a quick bite to eat. What I didn’t realise at the time was that this is a sister restaurant to Kanpai, which I will come back to later in this review. We arrived at around 5.30pm but had no reservation. They managed to find us a table and asked us to kindly return the table by 7pm, which was perfectly fine for us. I’ve since found that it’s always recommended to book a table in advance if you would like to eat here.We ordered 2 glasses of the plum wine and a selection of dishes from the menu. The food was good, but not stand-out. Our sushi rolls looked like they had been rushed in being put together and were falling apart when trying to pick up with chopsticks. Dunking them into the soy meant your roll pretty much disintegrated, so although I’m no chopstick expert at the best of times, I made an awful mess trying to eat my food! The flavours were there for the most part though, and taste-wise the food was good even though the presentation and polish was slightly lacking. The atmosphere of the restaurant is more ‘bar’ like which high tables and stools to sit on. It definitely has a more casual vibe compared to Kanpai and is not somewhere I would chose to visit for a nice sit-down meal – for us, it worked perfectly on the day as we were looking for a very quick and easy bite to eat, so the casual feel of the restaurant fit fine with our mood. Given that Kanpai is the more formal ‘restaurant’, where booking is essential, I think it would make more sense to make Sushiya the place to go for walk-in sushi – especially given that Sushiya does have a far more informal feel to it. Having both restaurants, which have an almost identical food offering, being almost exclusively booking only makes me reluctant to return to Sushiya – if I have to book in advance, I’d rather go to Kanpai and have the proper restaurant experience.Personally, we wouldn’t return to Sushiya as the food, service and atmosphere didn’t quite live up to the bar set by Kanpai. I appreciate that it’s perhaps not fair to judge it by the same yardstick, however given that the prices are very similar and you’re definitely getting less of an experience for the same value, Kanpai wins hands-down.

We went there on Friday night for an early dinner, about 6:30. After reading the other reviews it was quite clear that the service may have been slow, but given its sushi we knew it might take a bit longer than a normal dinner and we were going before dinner rush. The restaurant is very small (about 7 tables), but at no point does it feel crushed or too quiet. Great atmosphere. If you're going in there just for sushi, I recommend getting a maki or nigiri to start, then it breaks up the meal a bit so you're not sitting on an empty stomach waiting for mains. We got the grilled aubergine, which was to die for, and an avocado maki to start and three rolls for main (dragon, rainbow and futumaki) can't fault any of it. Great taste and size. We also got the hot sake during our meal, not an expert on sake, but it was good. Meal came to a reasonable price for two. Oh and the waitress was great. She was attentive and informative. We will be back!

Prezzo onesto direi. Da provare.

Authentic Japanese food. What a find! Miso soup was delicious, as was the tempura prawns - covered in a light crispy batter with no sign of oil so the prawns remained firm, juicy and sweet. Three of us shared an aubergine dish cooked in a way I've never experienced before. Cut in half, grilled and seasoned with a sticky, not overly sweet dressing with miso sauce - it was simply delicious and I highly recommend it. The salmon sushi was so fresh it allowed for natural flavours to come through. The restaurant is typical Japanese minimalist in style, comfortable, clean but the emphasis very much on food and service - both of which were superb.

The place is tiny so we tend to eat early and the service is always good. We've probably tried all the sushi now and I recommend it all. The Nigiri salmon set is particularly brilliant and good value but it's hard to pick any one thing off this menu as everything is prepared with skill and care and tastes delicious. The only thing to be slightly wary of is that it's all high stools so young children might feel a bit precarious. But our 3 year old manages fine. It's a fantastic restaurant.

It's a little walk away from the station (would have probably only been about 10-15 mins if my satnav worked!) but despite getting a little lost on the way there it was definitely worth it! The restaurant is lovely- nicely decorated and immaculately clean- and the food was beautiful. The sashimi was so fresh and the nigiri were authentic- made with more fish than rice in the traditional Japanese way- and even the miso and soy were amazing. Harsh soy, bitter wasabi and overly salty miso always ruins sushi for me but these were perfect (even the seaweed in the miso was fresh). The staff were lovely and welcoming also, and the service was really quick considering the quality of the food!I Would recommend Sushiya to anyone and I will definitely be coming again the next time I visit Edinburgh!

We booked the table for 3 adults and 1 baby (including push car) in advance. Last time (December 2016) we did the same and we feel really welcomed and the food was excellent. So.. they gave us a 3 persons table in the middle and we put the push car aside , then one of the waitress keep saying that we have to move away our push car when customers of the nearby 2-person table arrived. We felt upset as we have already told them in advance by phone that we got a baby push car and they said ok. We are so annoyed that we ask if we can move to that 2 person table at the side so definitely the push car will not touching any nearby objects but just walls. We moved but the waitress still saying that if the customers of another table nearby arrive and find out out push car annoy them (which is impossible, as there are plenty of space) we still have to take away the push car . We think that the waitress is going too far, keep pushing us with non-logical assumptions. Turn out that their customers feel spacious and playing with our baby and doesn't seems annoyed by the push car at all. And some devlieroo riders are waiting in the restaurant for orders and they were the one who really occupy the space and annoyed all customers. (why they couldn't wait outside?)Anyhow, the food - we ordered Tokyo Roll, California Roll and Rainbow Roll, the rice of the sushi roll is too soft and wet which is not a good standard in a sushi restaurant. I don't know if this is just a single occasion or they got a new chef. The fish - sashimi is still OK. It was our favourite sushi restaurant in Edinburgh but we hope that it will keep their food and service quality.

We are a couple going to this restaurant for about 3 years, at least once a month; and we've noticed many changes in the staff, which is normal, if the new ones are well trained, which in my opinion, is not the case. The last 3-4 times we did not receive the same attention as we were used to; some examples are to be waiting on the door with anyone approaching us for 5 min, not being asked to refill the hot green tea, make a booking 1 hour later than planned just to have a table and not the bar and eventually be seated at the bar...Regarding the food, we found that the rolls aren't made as well as before some examples are the sauce with the tokyo roll and other small things that made the experience not as pleasant as it was before. I hope this helps you to keep improving and being the favorite restaurant for more people.

You mean dumplings!".

Cute n clean, Sushiya is small but packs power with exceptional Japanese cuisine. Starting with chicken/vegetable Gyoza I realised attention to detail was paramount from the kitchen. The Gyoza was slightly fried, and melted in the mouth with not a hint of grease. The 8 piece Dragon Roll which features prawn tempura with avocado slices wrapped round the roll finished with fish roe was a delight. The tempura coating remained crisp and combined superbly with the other flavors. The tasty n nutty black sesame ice cream completed the perfect lunch.

Having not eaten sushi since we visited Japan last year, we were nervous about trying British sushi lest it be the rubbery tasteless fare we'd experienced before our trip. However, Sushiya did not disappoint: the fish was very fresh and deliciously prepared - almost as good as in Tokyo. It's a busy restaurant so make sure to book a table - we were lucky to get a table for two on a Tuesday night in the festival.

As with all sushi, the amount of food we received at Sushiya was negligible. We found ourselves hungry within an hour, even though we paid about 40 pounds for two diners, without alcohol. The food made no impression on me. The shop was small, but the worst part was that within ten minutes of being seated, we realized that Girl from Ipanema was being played on repeat. And it continued being played on repeat. For our entire meal. 90 minutes. We now hate Girl from Ipanema.

Great location next to Haymarket. We had spring rolls and dumplings to start which were lovely alongside a mix of sushi and beef teriyaki for our mains which was outstanding. Equivalent prices to the usual sushi chains in Edinburgh but a much higher standard of food and authenticity. Lovely, accommodating staff.Only wish is that the menu was a little more extensive. Will definitely be back.

This place is tiny so you probably need to book the table unless you go in at 17.00 like we did, even so you are asked if you can finish by 19.00, which was no problem for us. I am normally very critical about Sushi in U.K., as generally speaking how much you pay does not necessarily guarantee the freshness and taste. However, their Nigiri set with salmon Sashimi was reasonably priced and I was prety impressed with its quality. Katsu-don and Teriyaki Chicken -don were ok but nothing special and I think you can get same quality cheaper somewhere else. I would recommend Sushiya for people who want good Sushi for reasonable price.

This is my favourite place for sushi. Evenings do get busy due to the size but I've always managed to get a space. The sashimi is amazing and beef tataki rolls etc really great. Presentation is great and I always get great service, I live on the other side of town but regularly go as its never been average and sushi always tastes so fresh.

We were lucky to get a booking as we only booked that evening, the restaurant was full & it's only small. The service from the moment we sat down was great, very attentive (constantly filling up my water & taking away our empty plates). We ordered miso soup, chicken gyozas which were very tasty, miso aubergine which was amazing I have to say (although a tad oily), a sashimi platter which melted in your mouth & a rainbow roll.Thoroughly enjoyed our meal & we could have eaten more but it would have been greedy! Thanks so much Sushiya!

We ordered lots of dishes to share and it was all fantastic. I can recommend the grilled aubergine, something I'd never had before and it was so good! It was all so good. The staff were very nice and friendly. It's a very small place so it's a good idea to book a table to avoid disappointment.

I have been here at least twice and it is a fantastic place for sushi: the staff are wonderful, it is a nice atmosphere and in particular the sushi is some of the best in Edinburgh - the food is colorful and offers a wide palette of delicate flavours. Unlike some other restaurants, the experience never gets dull nor boring!

Don't let the humble exterior fools you. This tiny place hosted the best sushi experience in Edinburgh. The sushi rolls were tasty, the sashimis were really fresh and the meal sets were also really good. And the service were very nice too. Despite the small size it didn't feel cramped at all. Definitely recommend it if you're craving for a good sushi in Edinburgh!

Not a very imposing facade but inside, a very friendly welcome and amazing food. The sashimi was the best we had ever had and the sushi was excellent. Good portions and very reasonably priced. We would definitely recommend it

Tiny little place near Haymarket. Was recommended by a friend. Wouldn't have gone otherwise. Food was delicious. All four of us had different dishes and everyone loved their choice. Dragon roll was tasty. Staff friendly. If you like Japanese or fancy something different. Give it a try

Travelled from Glasgow to find the best sushi restaurant in Edinburgh, and it was worth the time and effort. Sashimi was very fresh and tasty. Tampura was so crispy and light. Also the rolls were delicious. We will be back.

We were lucky to walk-in during a weekday evening, without booking, but were told we'd have an hour to finish our meal. The interior is very tiny and was packed during our meal. The staff worked tirelessly and despite being rushed off their feet, the service and was fast and polite. We tried 4 rolls and everything was very, very good indeed. Recommended.

The restaurant is quite small and cozy. Both service and food are good, but not as good as their sister restaurant, Kanpai. You should avoid ordering their food through Deliveroo though. Their food packaging seems to fall short. The aubergine was completely crushed when it came. The packaging collapsed and the food was no longer edible because it was contaminated. Kind of disappointed by their response, as they didn't take any corrective actions.

Been here a couple of times and quite like the food here. The food isn't amazing, but decent enough for a quick bite after church! I've tried the pork katsu don and oyakudon, both of which are tasty but not as 'traditional' as one would expect.Their tempura prawns are very well done though. Service is average - would expect better for a place this small! However because the place isn't always busy, the food doesn't take too long to arrive, which is good.

Almost gave it 5 points possibly should have. This place is really minute and even though you sit up at a bar type table with stools the seating is really comfortable. I actually found the pricing very reasonable although the restaurant is pretty much in the middle of the city. Both my friend and I ate really well and the bill was less than £30 each. We ate crab tempura, Rainbow roll, Sashimi and a spicey tuna mini roll, saki for one. Every dish was enjoyable, tastey, fresh and served by a very polite and welcoming lady. Unlike previous sushi expirience every dish was a pleasant flavour sensation (OK I did not like ALL the sashimi) but most of it was delicious. It was so good to taste I kept thinking back on it the whole evening (in a good way). Will for sure be back when visiting the city again. I would love to have a Matcha green tea smoothie available when I next visit :-)

I love sushi and I've long enjoyed Sushiya as a treat, either to sit in or take-away, in company or alone, it's been one of the better sushi restaurants in Edinburgh. Unfortunately, however, recently there's been a fair bump in price and a noticeable decrease in portion size. I've eaten/ordered from there enough times to know what to expect and my latest two 'meals' were made up of thumbnail size portions that really didn't fill me at all.Additionally one of my last two meals was a take-away that I phoned for, only to find on collection that the prices on the website had not been updated and I was charged even more for (again) noticeably smaller portions. When I mentioned the price differences and even tried to show the website prices I was only grudgingly given £1 off my bill (the difference was more) and otherwise ignored. As a local and a regular I think it's a shame as I've always enjoyed eating there, but I've been quite put off from continuing to visit the restaurant as £15-£20 (not inc drinks) used to get me a reasonably satisfying meal whereas now it seems to get me little more than a starter.

We love Japanese food and were not disappointed here. The food was authentic and tasty and the atmosphere was pleasant. We had teriyaki chicken (crispy and flavoursome), shrimp nigiri (very fresh), and seafood ramen which was sweet and stayed crispy even in the delicious broth. Portion size was pretty standard for a Japanese restaurant - just enough. The restaurant itself is pretty small - we hadn't booked and only just managed to get a table. Booking advised!Overall a lovely restaurant. Oishikatta desu!

I'm really into my sushi. I've been to Tsukiji market in Japan and queued up for hours to get into a sushi restaurant and have had amazing sushi there. I've had sushi in the London (eg: Eat Tokyo) and throughout the UK. I've had sushi in nearly all the continents in the world. So I'm a pretty good judge of sushi! This sushi reminds me of Japan. The taste and presentation was perfect. Nowhere nearly as good as the restaurant I queued up for hours for in Tsukiji but 100x better than other sushi restaurants in the UK!We also tried the grilled aubergine with miso and tempura, which were very decent.

Originally intended to go to a better-known ramen restaurant up the road but they were full so we tried this. So glad we did. The pepper beer ramen was fantastic. Broth full of flavour. Seafood ramen also excellent. Nice gyoza. Staff friendly and efficient. Only taking a point off because they add a service charge which has no place in the UK.

This place is truly a gem! My wife and I stopped in one night for some sushi, then came back again a few nights later. The salmon teriyaki bowl was life-changing! The staff were very helpful with my dietary restrictions - and they have gf soy sauce! This is our new favorite spot in Edinburgh!

Visted on a very quiet Sunday evening, took the option D Set menu - beef, pork and chicken with 3 sides and 2 sauces - perfect amount for 2, rice portions reasonable size. Delicious and well explained by the staff, will visit again
