Satoru in Edinburgh, City of

I ordered beef sukiyaki. The beef was delicious, but the smell of the beef rice bowl next door was even better. Beef, rice, and tofu made me feel like I was eating real food (I simply haven’t tried much before). Personally, I forgot that sukiyaki is inherently salty, but the taste is well balanced with the egg wash. Next time I would like to try the pork chop rice or beef donburi The clerk's service is very friendly and lovely. He specially arranged for me to sit with the octopus. The service fee is 10%.

The noodles are undercooked, chicken was soggy, and service was poor. The interior design is nice, though. It was my third time visiting this restaurant and I noticed it’s gotten worse than when it first opened.

The food was incredible and the staff were so lovely and accommodating. I had the curry udon and was just spectacular. Would definitely go back.

We had the most delicious meal here a few weeks ago and we’re still thinking of it today! Lots of great options food wise, we had the classic pork Katsu curry and it was so flavourful. They also have a great selection of plum wine and sake! The food comes out when it’s ready and it can be quite fast service, so you shouldn’t expect to be sat down for a longer time like in most western restaurants which I can see have surprised some previous reviewers, but honestly I preferred this as we were very hungry! I am not a seafood lover so did not go for their famous tempura but I saw on other peoples plates and it looked amazing! Definitely give this spot a try if you can, I’ll for sure be back many times!

Recommend Karaage (the fried chicken). The sliced beefs are too thick. Everything was alright except the beef🥲

What a gem! I had one of the best experiences I’ve ever had in a Japanese restaurant (outside of Japan) here. The staff was super friendly and nice, the menu is great, the food was DELICIOUS and the prices are normal. Extra points for the great music choice.

The atmosphere was quiet and relaxing, which added to the overall enjoyment. The only disappointment was that they didn’t have tempura that day. However, there were still good alternatives, such as tonkatsu, sukiyaki, and beef curry udon. I tried the beef udon with an onsen egg—the flavors were decent, and the dish was comforting. As for the sukiyaki, I found the beef to be a bit too tough. If the slices were thinner and more tender, it would have been a much better experience. Overall, while I was slightly disappointed by the limited menu options that day, the food was enjoyable, and the peaceful environment made for a pleasant dining experience.

A nice little place just off St Patrick Street that has some of the nicest Japanese food I’ve fried in Edinburgh. Very reasonable portion to price ratio and I would highly recommend the Chicken Katsudon!!!

Loved trying the food at Satoru! They have a nice selection of different things on their menu! Their tempura is delicious. We also tried the Apple honey tea which is really nice. Definitely going back :)

The food is decent, but the service was quite disappointing. I’ve been to this restaurant several times, usually with my female friends, and never had any issues. However, this was my first time visiting with a male friend, and when I asked for the bill, the waiter placed it directly in front of him and asked how he would like to pay. It was awkward and, frankly, unacceptable for him to ignore my request and assume that the male guest should handle the payment. This kind of service reflects gender discrimination, which is disappointing to experience.

The tempura is pretty good. If you want to eat tempura, it’s best to go to IG first to see if it’s available that day. The atmosphere is also very chill.

The place felt quite authentic after visiting similar restaurants in east Asia. Loved the food, also seems to be reasonably priced for Edinburgh. The interior design is cosy but when the place gets full, you start realising that the tables layout is quite tightly set.

The eel tempura chazuke rice roll is delicious

The food is not bad, but really small portions. There are only 3 slices of meet in the beef Sukiyaki. But it is £19.5 GBP. It just tastes like normal hotpot meat. Nothing special. The sesame udon is not flavourful as well. Just a little bit of sesame dressing. The beef is dry. Not worth for spending so much money.

It was the worst Japanese restaurant I've ever had. Being an Asian restaurant, they don't even know how to cook the rice properly, or are they just using poor quality rice? I ordered beef sukiyaki. The beef was hard and dry like cardboard. totall ripped off at £19.50 for such a small portion and poor quality food. Never again !!!

The atmosphere is nice and it's a pleasant place to dine at. The food is good but not amazing. We knew they specialised in tempura so we ordered the tempura platter which came with unagi, shrimp, and crabs. But for roughly 30 GBP, the portion is quite small and it's not AMAZING. I would have been happy to pay the price if the food quality was proportional to the price but it wasn't. In total we spent 60 GBP between two people and there were no drinks, which is a bit egregious. I might still come back to try the katsudon, as those are less pricey.

Avoid this place unless you want to get insulted. Everything was so disappointing! Food was too pricey given that the portion was so small! I’ve never had such a small portion of food in Edinburgh. What’s even worse was they charged 10% service fee but the service was awful! We were just sitting there for 1 hour and were chased to leave as soon as we finished the meals. We didn’t even finish our drinks! The staff was so rude and said they needed the table whereas there were no people waiting outside.

I’ve been coming to this restaurant since it first opened and have visited more than 10 times. I’ve tried most of the menu, but the Tempura and Tendon is always my favorite—absolutely the best! I am sure this restaurant’s tempura is the beat in Edinburgh. Recently, they added Sukiyaki to the menu, which I tried, and it was quite good. This place truly feels like an authentic Japanese restaurant. I especially recommend it for solo diners. I’ve visited alone every time, and the atmosphere is always comfortable and welcoming for a table for one.

I came in just before it closed, so I only had sukiyaki. I ordered it thinking it wouldn't be delicious anyway, It was a typical Japanese sukiyaki. It's a shame that it's a regular iron pot and not a sukiyaki pot, but that's too much to ask for. It would be even better if the beef was 2mm thinner. I think it can't be helped. The eggs for the dip were also fresh and good.

I have eaten here several times before and had a good meal. I went there with my wife at 6:30 on a Wednesday night and ordered a sukiyaki and curry shrimp rice. I waited 20 minutes for the shrimp rice and 30 minutes for the sukiyaki. It doesn't matter, the Sukiyaki arrived as if it was half eaten and still very salty. The curry shrimp rice is just ordinary. With such quality, I probably won't go there again next time.

Food was ok for a quick turnaround eatery. Surfaces were a bit sticky and need more frequent cleaning between customers.

Absolutely wonderful place and the most authentic Japanese food I've had in Edinburgh. I lived in Japan and I am craving a good, authentic food often and while most spots serve fusion only, Satoru has dedicated themselves to giving original recipes. You have to check on their tempura offer (it is not every day!) and karaage - they taste EXACTLY like in Tokyo. Also they offer lunch deals that are under £20

Tempura restaurant that had no tempura. Sadly couldn't get what we came to try. The place is nice, clean, background music is lovely but the skinny bench seat along the wall was very shallow and not at all comfortable. The waitress was nice enough did the basics. Some of the drinks were unavailable...not great. We all got a small plate and a main course each. We found the starters average and very small for the price, also 2 were very sweet indeed and all lacked seasoning and flavour. The mains were similar hot but very basic and lacking in flavour. From eating in other Japanese restaurants in Edinburgh I would say this place is very overpriced and Thier portions are small. The beef was tough and stringy and there was very little of it. We were all disappointing by our meals. Overall I wouldn't revisit but people say good things about the tempura so if that's your thing it may be worth your while.

Small portion size and average food.

Thinking of Korea, I ordered only beef udon, and it was a bit absurd to get only a bowl of udon without any side dishes.. Someone said in the review that it was delicious, but we thought it was a little salty. It may vary from person to person, but I don't want to go there again.

Era un poco agradable ambiente tranquilo allí el personal estaba tan relajado que nos sentimos como si entráramos en la casa de alguien y nos dieron un cálido abrazo sopa de fideos. La comida era justo lo que necesitaba (especialmente para mi resaca de cumpleaños) y era tan buena relación calidad-precio. 10 / 10 ! ! ! Oh y el sake fue sensacional

Encontré este lugar después de navegar por los otros restaraunts asiáticos a lo largo de la carretera principal y encontré que este es notablemente más amable con nuestras carteras que el resto. Inmediatamente el lugar era un soplo de aire fresco de las concurridas calles - un ambiente muy tranquilo y calmante llega a todos los rincones de este pintoresco restaraunt (para cualquiera fácilmente sobreestimulado, es una delicia). La comida que conseguimos (langostino tempura udon y judías edamame) era encantador, cálido y asequible. Mi única queja sería que la sopa era demasiado dulce, pero no arruinó la experiencia ni un poco. Normalmente no escribo comentarios para lugares, pero este lugar me hizo sentir tan bien y era tan distinto de los otros lugares caros que simplemente tuve que hacerlo.

It was alright, food is very unique. The atmosphere is very nice and service was quick. However, the food wasn’t as good as I had hoped. It’s all fried and done very well but felt too oily and heavy. The flavours were there but subtle and overwhelmed by the taste of fried batter. If you really like light and fluffy fried stuff, this is the place, otherwise probably try other menu items or go to one of the other many nearby Japanese/Asian restaurants. Definitely want to return some time and try a different menu item to update my opinion on the food.

Delicious typical Japanese food, you experience the true Asian essence, a cute, small but very cute place. Friendly staff especially the boy and the cute girl at the counter 😘 I highly recommend

We ordered rice and Udon, only the tempera was outstanding, the others were not bad.

Never got a chance to try it. Presumably busier during the festival, but still running very delayed. I had a reservation, but from seating I timed 25 minutes before I had to just leave. If it was that slow to order, I couldn’t risk any further delays to the evening. Delays are fine, but two other tables that seated after me ordered first, whilst I was still waiting and actively trying to order.

Food is a bit too sweet. Not bad though Seriously no wifi... This was extra beef. Felt like normal portion. Fringe inflation people. Let's support it

Excellent Japanese restaurant. Specializing in udon and curry, and run by two friendly young people. A must visit away from the crowded center.

The food was really delicious (I got the Udon tempura) but it was quite expensive for relatively small portions. We went at lunchtime and it wasn't very busy. The food came quickly and we sat by the window soaking up the sunshine. It was a lovely special treat.

NONE!! of our dishes looks like the pictures that other good reviews have left. I don't know if the chief had an off day or those reviews are just FAKE. I went there due to the good reviews but I am very disappointed paying nearly £50. The food that being served is bland, tasteless, no effort in presentation and the portion is very small. Me and my friends have ordered three dons ( Oyakodon, Katsudon and Gyudon). There were no taste in all three of them. The Oyakodon's egg is a completely fried egg and the chicken is with no taste at all. The Katsudon, the pork is tiny. The Gyudon is without an egg and portion is so small that you can finish all the meat in one scope of a spoon. Very disappointed for a local foodie😞 I rarely leave a bad review but this is that bad.... don't waste your money here. There are much better places in Edinburgh.

Brilliant little spot. Myself and 3 other friends had dinner here, all of us fans of Japanese food. We ordered and shared a heap of starters and each of our mains was fantastic with enough of a selection of drinks. It also doesn't break the bank. I'd go back and recommend to others

Presentation 10/10. Dishes were carefully arranged on the tray, with food neatly served in the dishes. Hidden at the bottom of my miso soup the egg whites were cut into cubes. The variety of foods had strong delicious flavours and combined nicely with each other. My chicken was not only incredibly tender but somehow also juicy and rich with flavour.

£17 for wheat noodles 1 piece of a carrot 2 asparagus with 2 prawns. Arrived cold

Absolute disappointment in business operation! Reservation made via ‘book’ 5 days before actual appointment and received a couple of confirmation in sms prior going there. We went that on the spot and so disappointed to see it was actually closed with notice suggesting reopening on 12th. Would recommend checking their business hours to make sure it actually opens even you have made reservations and confirmation from them. Would definitely think twice before deciding to dine there!

Went for lunch couple days ago. We had ordered Gyudon with Onsen Tamago and Katsudon. However, the Gyudon was awful because everything was COLD! The rice was very loose. Service is just average. The only thing can say ok is the interior deco but later found that the restaurant was just sold in 3 months ago.

Absolutely brilliant dinner with attentive service and modern, clean decor. Perfect prawn tempura, tasty soba noodles, fabulous donburi. Even got a tasty bottle of cool sake to wash it all down. Ended with some beautifully presented matcha mochi. Do check out this little place, which is tucked away in corner by St. Patrick’s Square.

The pork cutlet is served with a smooth egg and has a decent taste. The pork cutlet is relatively dry and heavily floury, but it is still delicious when paired with hot rice and sauce. The takoyaki is delicious, but the portion is a bit small and a bit expensive. Think about it

Ordered via Uber Eats and as I predicted, I just shouldnt have. Uber stacked a couple of deliveries in front of mine and the rider was out for ages. Food arrived cold and soggy. But quiete honestly, even if the product arrived in a better shape the prices would still be steep, the portions would still be very small and clearly smaller than in the restaurant. Be as it may, dont know why a restaurant specialized in fried food is doing deliveries across town. Bound to damage their rep, it makes no sense. I would not order/eat in again.

The name "Satoru" holds significant meaning, as it is named and inscribed by the owner's father. I had the privilege of being among the initial group of patrons who visited the restaurant even before its official opening. During that visit, we engaged in a comprehensive conversation with the owner. The quality of the tempura served at this restaurant has shown consistent improvement over time. It is a testament to their dedication that my party and I consistently order more than £80 worth of tempura, as it is undeniably delicious. Among the exceptional tempura options, I would highly recommend the eel tempura, king prawn tempura, soft-shell crab tempura, and scallop tempura. I wholeheartedly recommend paying a visit to this establishment, as I have developed a deep appreciation for it.

Nice place to dine in. It is comfortable restaurant with have a good vibe. Udon is very chewy 👍🏻but the broth is a bit too sweet in my opinion. For Tempura Chazuke (rice bowl served with dashi broth), the broth is too light for my taste and shrimp tempura is not crispy enough. Overall quality is still good and have room for improvement. I definitely would have a visit again.

I visited here tonight after a show I attended myself. I wanted to get some food, but everywhere was buzzing round town & it was pretty intimidating for a lone eater. I passed this wee place nestled away in the back corner of St.Patrick’s Square - I didn’t even know of it’s existence before tonight, but thankfully caught a glimpse of their sign from the busy roadside en route to the bus home. The place is immaculate inside. Such a simple, modern, chilled vibe to it. Menu was ample & everything sounded delicious. Reasonably priced. Despite the more visually obvious places round the corner being packed-out, Satoru was a lot quieter & much more peaceful (which definitely suited me). I’m guessing it was quite quiet because no-one spotted their wee sign! Hidden gem 💎 I ordered the Tempura Udon & was blown away at how good it was! Veg tempura was super tasty & I loved the prawn tempura as well - perfectly crispy & not oily. The noodles were lovely & chewy - portion was really generous. I’m a big eater 😅 & despite only ordering this main, I left feeling pleasantly full. The broth though … is to DIE for 🤤👌 I would happily drown in this - tastiest I’ve had! I go out for ramen a lot with my son, so I’ve been around 🤣 Aaaanyways - if you’ve never tried Saturo, please do! It’s not a huge place & I’d love to see it stick around, as it’s freaking awesome & they deserve all the business! I can’t wait until I return! Found this really nice tempura shop online! Went to try and was definitely not disappointed. The interior was lovely with a Japanese flare, nice wooden interior. The tempura was very well done with a light batter. Would recommend the soft shell crab as well. The ochazuke tempura was also amazing. Would go again!

The katsudon is flavourful and the pork is so soft and tender. The restaurant is clean and cozy.
