Super Natural Vegetarian Cafe in Gateshead

First time visiting a solely vegan establishment but it won’t be the last. Went to celebrate some good news with a couple of friends one of whom is vegan. Generally my friend has limited choice but today she was in heaven and repeatedly said so. I had chunky chips loaded with lentil, chickpea and mushroom dahl. The serving was more than enough, in fact I was unable to eat it all. My friends had the meatball sub and soup of the day which was tomato. My friend made the most of the meal deal and had a desert too. Collectively we also made the most of the cocktail menu. The staff were very friendly and helpful and the restaurant had a welcoming atmosphere. Would absolutely recommend this place to others vegan or not.

We were visiting Newcastle for the weekend and had seen the positive reviews. As long term vegetarians we were excited to try out this restaurant. We had high hopes and we were not disappointed. The food was fresh, flavoursome and plentiful. I had a cheeseburger and thick cut chips, my wife had the burrito. It was the best veggie burger and chips I have ever had. The burrito was also amazing according to the wife. The staff were friendly and the whole place has a lovely laid back vibe. Would highly recommended

We visited after our daughter's graduation, the food was excellent, the service and advice superb. The choice of food brilliant, especially as it was all Vegan, most impressive.

Neither my fiancé and I are vegetarian or vegan, although she's been reducing how much meat she eats for a while, and I wanted to take her for a lunch date, which didn't involve the usual chicken, burger or steak. I eat a lot of meat and felt it might be nice if we tried something different, that would be more in tune with her taste and a change to my routine eating habits. We arrived at noon and were politely welcomed and promptly seated. She ordered the kebab and fries, I ordered the lasagne and thick cut chips. There was a nice selection of dessert available, so she had the cheesecake, and I had the sticky toffee pud. Reassuringly, the food didn't arrive in two minutes, which led me to believe there was a bit of preparation going on, rather than being served food which had been sitting around waiting to be ordered, or which had been hastily reheated and thrown together. Looking onto the kitchen from where we were seated, I could see actual people working with an actual chef all contributing rather than just worrking a production line. At one point, the chef came out to patiently advise a visitor about some element of what they were thinking of ordering. Then the food arrived. If it tasted as good as it looked, we were onto a good thing. It tasted better than it looked. It was presented very nicely, was hot, fresh, and extremely tasty. There was plenty of it, too. Good food is good food, whatever the personal, culinary, or conscious choices behind its preparation and enjoyment. Whether vegan, vegetarian, omnivorous, or carnivorous. Neither my fiancé who eats meat occasionally, or I who eat it all the time, could think of any way of improving what was in front of us. This was amongst the best food we've had anywhere at all. I actually said that if not eating meat was this good, and if the macros supported my exercise aspirations, I'd have no problem leaving it in the fridge in the supermarket. Our shopping bill would be lower, and the house wouldn't periodically stink like a kebab shop, either. The staff were all genuinely kind, happy, and helpful. The food was exceptional, and it didn't cost a ridiculous amount. I forgot something. My fiancé is, in her own words, very cautious about cheesecake. You give her bad cheesecake, and all is lost. She thought it was amazing. The sticky toffee pud? Off the chart, outstanding. Read my other reviews, and you'll see that i pull no punches where food is concerned. Food is too personal and too important to get wrong. I don't have any time for substandard nonsense and happily call it out. Go here, eat extremely well, and enjoy a generous and very well prepared and presented meal, whatever your dietary or culinary preference. This place is wonderful , we're looking forward to our next visit and to many more to come.

Really good selection of lovely food and drink, with fast and friendly service and very reasonable prices. I had the shakshuka and it was really delicious and a very generous portion. Would definitely recommend.

Supernatural was a great find, very near the station in Newcastle. I’m a vegetarian and my husband is a meat eater. We both chose the aubergine and mushroom lasagna and we both thought it was amazing ! We each had a dessert, my husband had sticky toffee and custard and I had a chocolate torte. Both amazing. It was so good we came the next day for lunch. This is plant food at its best. Thoroughly recommend ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

So delighted to find this cool veggie/vegan cafe bar. We had Mediterranean roasted veg, lemon cannellini bean concoction with salad, and an onion bhaji pita. Both dishes were flavoursome and, considering they were ‘small plates’ very generous and well priced. So good that we are back for breakfast!

I find it hard to get my partner to walk past the Supernatural to try any other places to eat in Newcastle. At some point he'll have tried everything on the menu and we can think about eating somewhere else! Lovely to have such a wealth of choice as vegetarians. Hearty portions, lovely welcoming environment with wonderful staff who really believe in what the place is achieving, but without being preachy. I'm a bit of a veteran, having enjoyed its transformation from its original site & style in the '80s. While it's always been reliable, it really has evolved and keeps upping its game, offering a range of styles of food from homely and comforting to the more adventurous and sophisticated. Whatever your food mood, there'll be something that tempts you. Not joking about not being able to walk past - we might have to start getting the bus from Berwick not the train!

Gorgeous place with a chilled vibe and AMAZING food. Well worth a visit. We had booked a table and were glad we did as it was busy. Staff were lovely too. Very happy customers.

Popped in for breakfast and ordered a bacon, sausage and mushroom sandwich. Couldn't eat it as the 'bacon' was like eating rubber. I knew it was not bacon and asked the waiter when he cleared our table what it was. It was then that I was told that it was a vegan restaurant. Lovely for vegans, but very misleading for meat eaters. Checked front of restaurant on leaving in case we had missed something but no mention of vegan. Should not advertise as bacon if it is not bacon. Having said that the waiters and surroundings for vegans was very nice.

We've visited this restaurant over the years including back in the day when it was situated up near the City Library. We both eat meat though appreciate Super Natural's varied vegan menu choices. One thing though, we couldn't see any external restaurant signage stating that it is vegan which we are convinced led to 4 lads sitting down next to us and ordering the All Day Sunday Breakfasts. We had to leave before they got their order but did they get what they thought they'd ordered?!?! Anyway, our food was good. Thanks Super Natural!!

OMG, the food was delicious & nutrious, especially the puddings. I took home a piece of the ginger sponge & the cherry square with an oaty crumble topping, to share with my hubby & both were devine! Bith the interior & the staff are fab too.

My wife is vegetarian and it can be difficult to locate a large selection of meals and what appears to be the majority of establishments. I must admit, the food is outstanding. We have visited 4 or 5 times now and each time we choose something different from the menu. The staff are friendly and very professional. One of my absolute favourite places. The food is always 10/10, staff are lovely, the place is beautiful, and the service is quick. I’ve always found Super Natural to be very accommodating for GF food, however love that they now have a dedicated GF menu, making it that little bit easier for GF people to order!

I have been struggling to eat out after my coeliac diagnosis 6 months ago. This place was a dream! The gluten free menu had so many options, it was difficult to choose. I went for the gluten free lasagne as I've never seen that on a menu in any other restaurant. It was amazing, so delicious. Huge portions, great service. If I lived in Newcastle, I'd be here every week 😍.

Just had the most amazing lunch here. My husband is veggie, and my daughter has coeliacs disease and we always have the dog with us so it is so difficult to cater for everyone's needs. Food and service was amazing! My only criticism is that we were unable to tip the staff as we were unable to add a tip to a card payment. This seems a shame as we felt the staff deserve to be tipped. Otherwise a fantastic experience!

I visit here often and have never had a bad experience! The food is always so good, well flavoured and leaves you full but all tastes so fresh that you never leave feeling like you’ve overdone. Portion sizes are so good and a bargain for the price. The venue is beautiful, staff are always so kind and sweet, and they are great at catering for gluten free people too!

I come here as a treat for my birthday usually as its the only place in Newcastle that does 100% vegan food and drinks. And it's ideal for those with dietary requirements like myself. Today I came in to just chill, do some uni work and have breakfast, and the staff were friendly and talkative

I've been popping in every Sunday for a couple of months now. One of very few cafes in town that welcome dogs. Great staff, excellent coffee and cakes. I spend an hour or so here while my daughter and granddaughter wander around the shops..... Always feel welcome here and a top place to relax for a while. A definite 10 out of 10 from me and my dog!

Ruined our valentines night. What an absolute disaster. Staff have no idea what was going on, although pleasant, aren’t trained in anyway and shouldn’t be serving. Partner was up all night being sick after eating here.Where to start with this calamity? We booked our Valentines evening with Super Natural Cafe in January. They only confirmed the booking the day before Valentines Day, that should have been the first red flag.When we arrived the huge sign on the door said CLOSED. There were people waiting outside wondering what was going on. We tried the door and it was open so we went in. No one was there to greet us or explain what was going on.We walked the entire length of the restaurant to the bar and a flustered member of staff asked for our name and gestured towards a table. They had table numbers but had named them A and B, with it being valentines day (split in to 2s). So an order for table 12, was now table 12a and 12b. Which confused the waiting staff no end.We waited 30 minutes before anyone even spoke to us while seated. Waited another 15 minutes for our “canapé” and prosecco to be served. The canapé was Ritz cracker with bean paste on and 2cm of red bell pepper chopped on top, with a slice of olive. Bean paste tasted nice, but “underwhelming” is a drastic understatement.We waited a further 45 minutes for the next course at this point they finally decided to ask if we wanted drinks. Ordered a drink by someone who had never mixed a drink in their life, there was no way to stir the drink and all of the alcohol had sunk to the bottom.The next course was soup, but very sweet, needed a pinch of salt, but no salt was on the table. Served with the hardest bread I’ve ever eaten (it wasn't toasted, and not stale, perhaps twice baked?). The battered Jack fruit was next (another 20 minute wait) served with a sauce that was just HP Fruity Brown sauce. The Jack Fruit was very nice though.Another 20 minute wait for a sorbet, which was chemically and again way too sweet. (Top tip, you don’t need a palette cleanser if it’s been so long since the last course you can’t remember what you’ve eaten!).The slider was nice. Seemed like home made bread, but didn’t need the BBQ sauce. Just too many tastes battling in the burger. The 12 skinny fries were nice, but again weren’t salted. We asked for salt and they were instantly improved upon adding salt.The waiting staff started to leave at 22:20. I don’t blame them. I wouldn’t want to work in such disorganised chaos either.The Mushroom and Aubergine lasagne, with chunky chips wasn’t needed. This time they remembered to salt the chips and they were much nicer. This course seemed out of place in the menu since you’ve just eaten a burger and fries. At this time of the night it’s 22:45 and we’re sick of waiting for food.We’ve still only had 1 drink at this point.The elder waiter man with white hair, although nice and pleasant, should not have been serving. He didn’t know which table ordered what, which dish was next and nearly dropped every dish he brought to tables. Hopefully he is the owner and was standing in for someone who was ill, but he shouldn’t have been serving at all.I walked past the kitchen to see at least 6 people working there, also looking bewildered. How can such a full kitchen not deliver 30 covers in an orderly fashion?At 22:50 we, and many other diners, asked to take the dessert home as it was just way too late to eat a slab of chocolate cake, coffee and a truffle.While we were leaving we overheard one of the remaining waiting staff tell a customer that this was a “trial event”. Please advertise it as such in future! “This is a trial event, everything will be deplorable” and customers can aim their expectations accordingly. Paying customers are not your test subjects.And what’s up with the lights turning on and off every 5 minutes?! Combined with the sauna like heat I felt like I was in a weird psychological experiment!Then, to top it all off, my partner was up all night being sick. I have luckily been fine, but I have a cast iron constitution.If you’re looking for commercial business premises in Newcastle, check out this building in the next 3-6 months as they will surely be out of business without drastic change.

I am a regular visitor to Super Natural, following a visit from a vegetarian family member who was also very impressed with the food and cosy surroundings. Today, however, I was a bit put out when one of the servers approached the small table where I was enjoying coffee with a friend and placed a large-ish card on the table. The card stated that the table we were sitting at was reserved from 15:30 (It was then just after 10:30). Given the small size of the table the card got in our way so I took it back to the counter and told them I wasn’t prepared to put up with it. Basically : table reserved 5 hours later - not my problem! The server expressed surprise - as if my request was unusual

Wonderful food. Wonderful staff. Very friendly and helpful staff. Breakfast was great, beautifully decorated and a very calm atmosphere. We loved it here and when we are back in the area we will be back. Recommended 100%

Amazing! One of my favourite places in Newcastle! The lasagna, kimchi hot dog and Dahl are all excellent and the cocktails are cheap and tasty. Would recommend to anyone whether your vegan or not.

I have been coming to Supernatural for around 4 years now, and I will keep coming in the future as the atmosphere is fantastic. I love how calm and quiet it is.The staff are very helpful, and the food is lovely. I am trying to become a fully fledged vegetarian and friends decided to treat me to a nice lunch, we went last Saturday it was very busy but the staff were really helpful, one in particular slightly older than the rest, he swooped in when he saw our table hadn't been cleaned thoroughly then helped me through the menu when I forgot my glasses. That was were the professionalism ended really, food was nice.

Friendly staff , great atmosphere oh and white wine spritzers! Will defiantly be back, you don’t have to be vegetarian to enjoy Supernatural

Superb place for breakfast. Mainly vegetarian options. I had granola which was excellent and my wife had porridge. Wholesome food and great way to start the day. Coffee excellent and the tropical smoothie was lush.

Had a late lunch here. Was excited to go here, as being able to choose anything from a menu is a real treat, rather than scanning for the "Vege Option" which is usually a pile of cheese-related carbs. We had wraps, coffee and a fruit smoothie - it was all OK but the food was really short on flavour somehow....It's not a budget option so was a bit disappointed. Our table was not cleaned from the previous user either (smears of sauce and crumbs on the table). We had moved table once, to get away from the speakers by the counter as we couldn't hear each other speak, so please, also, turn the music down!

Delicious!! Firstly, really lovely friendly staff at 8am on a rainy Saturday as they were opening their doors, couldn't have been more welcoming. Followed by very good and hot coffee, the nicest freshest smoothy I've ever had and gorgeous turmeric latte. We all had an excellent Vegan breakfast!! Will be back every time we come to visit our son at uni.

I had lunch with a vegan friend in Supernatural this week. Excellent food in a relaxed environment, we stayed for four hours, having lunch, then drinks, then cake. There was no pressure to buy or to leave and the staff were friendly.

I spent 4 days in Newcastle and I ate in Super Natural Cafe on three occasions. Other vegan restaurants were good, but this one was the best.The staff are super friendly and nothing was too much trouble for them. During one visit, they were really busy and took my phone number to call me when a table became free.The Aubergine and Mushroom lasagne is so good. I had it on two of my visits.The green spinach kale and mango smoothie was also superb.In the evening there is a tapas menu and cocktails and the net lighting gives it a great atmosphere.This will definitely be my first choice of restaurant when I return to Newcastle.

Absolutely amazing food, very friendly staff and a great atmosphere. As an old returning customer it was lovely to see the quality hasn't gone down moreover its got a lot better.I had the vegan fish and chips to take out and my god.... mouthwatering thy name is supernatural.You guys really do out do yourselves I Can't wait for my next visit to Newcastle to come back to supernatural

We stopped in for lunch and loved it so much we went back for breakfast the next day. We want one of these where we live. Loved everything about it. Loved the ethos, the variation of food and drink available, the quality of the food. I can’t recommend this enough

I have now been here twice. I absolutely love the atmosphere and pretty lights and decorations. I have been in Saturdays and booked easily enough through Facebook. I think you would probably need to as it always is busy but the first time I went after 5pm when it was bar snacks and a bit quiet so maybe ok later on for walk ins. The first time I had pizza which was absolutely gorgeous. The second time I had the Blt - which was gorgeous but HUGE! I felt awful because I could not finish it but you can guarantee that you will not leave here hungry. Will be back again I’m sure
