Yes yes yes yes, YES.....Scotland definitely has the X tra factor . "They took the words right out of our mouths" ... it must have been the seafood that was kissing me . We were staying near the Harbour Lights and the lights said go.. we were looking out for a place to go. Sun Kai had the right music.... beautiful place to eat . Let's loose the cheesy songs and get down to the amazing food. Only staying Friday night near by and late on arrival we chose the Sun Kai on local recommendation . Well we were not disappointed. Had a relaxing drink in the bar area and ordered the food . Not rushed and we were very chilled out. There is a three course before 9pm for a reasonable price but we decided to treat ourselves . First time here but not our last. We said what our preferences were and "First Class Service was applied " They even recommended the main course to suit our tastes ....and WHAT a taste of paradise it was. Starters for me king prawns butterflied in a sweet chilli sauce .. yum. Crab claws for hubby .. he found delicious . Don't always assume that all you can have is the set a la carte menu .. let them know what you like and on a quieter night they will I am sure,....oblige. Better value for money if wine is required .. buy the wine by the bottle NOT....by the glass . Chardonnay and also Sauvignon recommended . Main course we discussed what we both liked and we had squid and black bean sauce , king prawns with sweet and sour sauce (didn't taste processed at all). Scallops with chilli sauce and one portion of fried rice was enough.Seafood heaven. Finished with Chinese tea and a large expresso and well worth the SERVICE....FOOD. and MONEY...Thank you very much and will definitely be back .

We had a deadline to keep to, so ordered our meal, I stayed and my wife went back to the camper to get the eating irons ready. I waited and waited along with two other guys who couldn't believe it was taking so long. When it did arrive the two guys were served first even though I had ordered well before them ! What a ghastly place. We went here after reading some reviews on Google but I have to say that I have not had such a bad meal in quite some time. It all started with the first impression when we entered the restaurant and didn't get a particularly warm welcome. We sat down and ordered the food. When it came is when things went down hill very quickly. We had ordered starters a d main course and we were surprised that the food arrived so quickly to be honest. My wife and myself had different dishes and the strange thing was that they tasted very similar (one was a sezchuan and the other in mandarin sauce). The hot and sour soup also had some disturbing similarities to the main dishes which was just frightening. The kids meals where presented in a cute way but clearly the pizza was a cheap pizza from the frozen section with some big standard fries. Nothing great but the kids ate it so that was ok. Both my wife and myself did not eat anything as even the egg fried rice was tasteless and without much flavour. When we were approached by the waitress the only comment was that Chinese here was cooked differently and probably not to our pallet. Nothing was offered and charged in full even though we did the have a y of the food. This definitely left a sour taste behind and for me sets a new standard in bad culinary experiences. I have travelled the world and have had chines in England, Wales, Scotland, different parts of the USA, Germany, France etc. And thus know the difference between interpretations of dishes around the world and also in the same country. I will go out on a limb and say that this was a packet sauce and definitely not home made. The basis must be the same across all dishes but at the very least the ones we had.

Looking at the reviews from others this place rated high which is why me and my family called in while on holiday nearby. Tha Sun Kai has a restaurant attached which we never used. I ordered, chicken egg foo Young, my wife shared a chicken omelette and the rest had curry fried rice and noodles with two pots of curry sauce.. The lady behind the counter (Scottish) was polite and curtious and handled our order well. With our order we recieved a free bag of prawn crackers. As we were only 10 mins away we waited until we got to our cottage to enjoy out meal. Maybe because people have different tastes in different cities we found the food not quite to our pallets. The curry was really thick and almost up pourable so we spooned it out, it was also tasteless, and more like grave with spice added. My egg foo yung was tasteless apart from the whole tin of peas they put in with it. My wife's chicken omelette was made with the same tasteless ingredients. The kids ate their rice and noodled after I mixed it with some Soy sauce which I was lucky to have. I personally wouldn't go back to the takeaway but it would be interesting to try the restaurant.

The unassuming exterior of the Sun Kai had meant that I'd written it off as "just a takeaway" place on a quick walk around Stranraer earlier. However, being unable to decide on where to go, the favourable reviews on Trip Advisor and the relative closeness to where I was stopping, I thought that I’d take a chance on it. Not only wasn’t I disappointed, but this was probably one of the best Chinese meals that I’ve ever had and very well priced as was the beer (in fact most places charge much more for a pint).I went for the 3 course menu which had so many choices that I’d defy anyone not to be able to find at least several different meals from it (including “European”). The quality (and quantity) of the food was excellent, as was the service and I really couldn’t anything to fault it.The only “crime” was this was a Saturday evening/night and there was barely anyone there. Come on Stranraer, this place needs your support! The only question to myself for my remaining 2 nights is do I come to the Sun Kai for both nights, or give someone else at least a chance for 1 night? Decisions, decisions..

We stopped, overnight, in Stranaer en route to the ferry to Ireland. Having not a lot else to do we wandered through the town's pubs and bars and happened upon the Sun Kai early evening. Even then the takeaway business was doing roaring trade so we popped into the restaurant to make a reservation for 8pm on that night (Saturday) - that wasn't a problem, but when we came later probably a good idea - not high season, but certainly popular. We ordered fairly typical meals for us, for a Chinese. The wife - spiced squid with salt and chilli, and me the ribs done similar as starters. My wife thought her's lacked a bit of heat, but I was perfectly happy with mine (perhaps a bit salty - nature of the dish). What did surprise me a lot was the meat was served off the bone - ribs, without ribs! I was initially a bit disappointed with this but actually, it's a clever idea and avoids the gnawing that often accompanies ribs that haven't been tenderised.Mains, my wife ordering the special scallops in chilli (guess I'm paying this one!) on rice and me the fillet steak in black pepper on a sizzling platter, on soft noodle. Mine was very good - for once the steak lived up to the promise of a tender bit of beef; the pepper sauce lacked some heat but was otherwise very good (waking the morning after, no hint of the MSG headache that often follows a chinese meal). My wife's meal though was superb - lovely flavour with spice but well balanced too. I nicked a bit of her veg and agreed with her that she made the best choice.A bottle of wine, and the whole lot came to £55. We've eaten worse food at highly rated/established restaurants in the heart of Manchester's China Town and paid double that, and enjoyed it significantly less. If I was to find myself in Stranrear again I wouldn't be disappointed to return to the Sun Kai

It was a very quiet April night in Stranraer midweek, and when we got to Sun Kai we were going to use the Take Away Service at Sun Kai, but entered the restaurant by mistake and decided to eat in. The lady running it stayed open especially for us as they were going to shut slightly early as it was very quiet night. I had the recommended Chefs Special Sizzling Duck and it was fabulous.. came out on a skillet sizzling and was so tasty. My friend had the chow mein and thoroughly enjoyed it. As well as impeccable food, the service was brilliant. The manager was friendly and we asked about the area as were visitors to the town and she was really helpful. I hadn't been for a Chinese for a while and whilst waiting for our ferry to N.Ireland we ventured into Stranraer with the help of the TripAdvisor App. Sun Kai looked to have some fairly decent reviews so we thought we would have a dabble and with how hungry three of us were it was going to be a mighty dabble. They say first impressions are so important and l have to be honest l wasn't too impressed with this place, it was warm outside for the time of year and as we walked in the first thing that l noticed was how cold it was in this place compared to outside and that's saying something for the location. We were greeted promptly and then ushered up to the left to an elevated waiting area that was cramped and felt like an A & E waiting room, l thought they had just opened as it was 6pm but apparently this is normal. There were two couples up there with our group of three and l can tell you now no one was rushing to take their jackets off, but what happened next was an even bigger surprise, the hostess arrived with menu's and asked if we would like drinks, I nearly asked for a pot of tea or a hot cocoa. Twenty minutes after ordering we were finally brought in from the cold waiting area and thankfully our table was by a long radiator and the main restaurant area was warm. Our starters arrived soon after and we started with a mixed platter for three, some satay chicken and a chicken and sweetcorn soup. The chicken and sweetcorn soup was very nice and the chicken satay wasn't great, as for the mixed platter it was a mixture of cheap stuff that you would buy in Iceland, 20 for a quid if you know what l mean. Our mains were a turn for the better l'm glad to say and l can see why it has managed to get a lot of good reviews from previous reviewers but its far from the best Chinese l have eaten. There were a lot of good things which confuse my final thoughts on this place, the cleanliness is good, the décor and ambience of the restaurant are very nice and the staff were excellent. As for pricing, it was around £25 per head which was very reasonable for what we had to eat and drink.

Have used the carryout regularly over the last six months as we've been in Stranraer every week and its been very good. Went for a sit in meal in the restaurant two days before Xmas with my family and ate from the set £11 menu. It was very quiet when we went in and we were seen to very quickly by quite a stern waitress. Orders place but be careful some of the set menu items resemble the main menu items - for example I ordered chicken satay only to find it was a chicken satay curry? and if i wanted satay on its own I paid extra. To be fair though it was pointed out to me when ordering. The starter of fried dumplings arrived in a plate with cut up lettuce 'scattered' on it - very poor on the presentation as was the whole meal to be honest. Maybe it was because it was the cheap(ish) set menu I dont know but over all we all thought at best it was mediocre service, mediocre food, mediocre restaurant.

We enjoyed the meal more than ones we have had in Chinatown London or Birmingham. This is a real little gem and the residents of Stranraer are very lucky! We were just there for one night.

Entered the Sun Kai and was seated in a small where we thought we would be eating which looked a bit cramped. We got drinks and placed our order there and started to think this was going to be cozy as more patrons came in.Not to worry though, once our food was ready we were shown to a spacious table in a very well presented dining room. The food was GREAT. We both took the Sweet and Sour Chicken from the 3 course meal. Probably the best tasting version of this dish I've. Batter was thick and heavy and the sauce was perfect.Very friendly staff.at £25 for both of us including drinks you can't go wrong.

The Sun Kai in Stranraer is one of the best, if not the best, Chinese (Cantonese) restaurants I have been to. As soon as you enter you get a warm friendly welcome. A small bar and a comfy sitting area as you wait for your meal is available. The surroundings are warm and cosy. The staff are very friendly and ready to help you in any way. Oh and what a restaurant is for, the food is fantastic and cooked well. I live in Stranraer and can vouch for the food as they have a takeaway next door which I use quite often. It may be advisable to book at weekends as it is very popular.

We were two ageing fisheremen, hungry after a hard day in a wee boat in Luce Bay. We were staying in Stranraer, and had no idea where to go for a meal. We stumbled across the Sun Kai by accident. Welcome was good; service was good; meal was good; wine list pretty good. And the price was very reasonable. Would go again.

Recently moved into the area and am more than happy with both the service and standard of food in the Sun Kai. I will certainly be making it one of my regular haunts. Also very good value for money

The reviews of the Sun Kai were excellent ant it lived up to them in all respects. The efficient friendliness of the staff, the quality of the food and the price were all excellent. In fact it was one of the finest chines meals we have ever had. Thanks to all for making it a pleasant visit.

Sun Kai is the best Chinese food I've ever had. I'm American and the food was definitely far superior to anything you can get in California. My Fiancee and I go there once a week and they have learned our orders. When I asked about the tea, Maria (the owner) brought me a container to take with me and told me how to brew it at home. The people who work here are so friendly and nice and the food is fresh and flavorful. Right now I'm back in California and I really miss the Sun Kai. The chicken with Chili and salt is wonderful as well as the chicken with honey and chili. The Won Ton Soup has great flavor and the chicken toast is great. Everything is wonderful. Highly recommended. I really like how when you come in you sit in the entry way and have your drinks as they take your order and prepare your food, then they take you through to your table where prawn crackers are waiting and your starter is being brought to the table. All in all, a wonderful restaurant, with wonderful staff and wonderful food. The only downside is that it can sometimes get quite loud and as I really like a quiet atmosphere that can get to me, but that happens very rarely.

We have visited Sun Kai many times over the years on visits to Scotland. We have always made a point of going there for a meal before boarding the ferry to Belfast, and did so again on May 5th.The early bird menu is extensive and the choice is, as always, difficult. We have always found the barbecued ribs too tempting not to have them as starter, and nearly always follow with a curry. The food is always tasty and arrives promptly, which is ideal when there is limited time to eat and be on time for the ferry.I'm sure we will make a return visit when next in Scotland.

After eating here on my last visit to Stranraer I was keen to go again, and yet again had an amazing meal! Very friendly staff, great food, nice chilled out environment. The only downside is we couldn't eat all of the food that came out. Can't wait to go back again!

I actually find myself unable to eat from any of my local chinese takeaways after spending a few days in Stranraer. I can't put my finger on what it is, but the food is just amazing, crispy shredded chicken, is actually crispy, but not dry, and not soggy. The staff and owners are so warm, friendly and attentive. Where else in South West Scotland will you be able to order Szechuan frogs legs?? The reason I can't eat chinese from my local takeaways? It just doesn't taste so good any more when you know how good it could taste! Oh, and the lighting and decor??! That's a whole other review.....in short, great atmosphere!

Absolutely brilliant restaraunt, lovely staff, atmosphere quiet and romantic. The food from the 3 course £10.90 section is ok, but could be better, a little bit dry but still a nice place for a meal.

4 star rating only because of provincial location - if this had been a big-city place would only have given it 3 stars. Pretty standard menu, very reasonable prices. Staff are great and food is tasty enough that I had no complaints. Just nothing really special about it.It is what it is and in unashamed about it which is fair enough.

Choc-a-bloc full of party kids, I had a reasonably quiet meal with family. The restaurant is quite small and has a well stocked bar. The food didn't really push my buttons and was average compared to similar restaurants. The others who give this 5 stars can't get around much. The staff are good although service an be slow if there are parties in. Menu was extensive and well presented.

We were really looking forward to our meal from Sun Kai as an end of holiday treat....sadly the best thing about the food was the microwave safe containers it came in! Rice was salty and hard, prawns were tough and in awful batter and the chow mein had overcooked noodles and undercooked everything else and was really tasteless. I can't believe it's gone so bad in only a year. We won't be back and if I could give minus stars, I would.

I ordered a takeaway last night the 7th of December 2024 from the Pearl Palace. I was looking forward to the curried beef, fried rice, and Chicken balls done in batter. I so wished i had gone somewhere else. The meat was hard and chewy and the only vegetable in the container was onion, lots of it. The curry had no tase whatsoever and the Chicken balls were doughy batter. The whole lot was thrown in the bin as it was truly awful. I would never ever recommend this restaurant to anyone, it was just terrible.

Had a quick take away from here after work. The curry sauce was delicious The beef chow mein was delightful Salt and pepper chips could do with more onions and peppers but not complaining they were nice

Amazing Chinese First time ordering with them , my wife and I think it’s the best in the area. The BBQ spare ribs simply brilliant. The crispy shredded chicken in sweet chilli sauce, awesome the salt chilli chips was great and the chicken chow mein equally as good. Every thing we've tried has been excellent.
