Ancoats restaurant now closed, unfortunately, as we found out when following Google Maps! Rang to book a table not realising I was speaking to their place in Altrincham. I'm sure it would have been very nice...

Twice been here with circa 4 years in between Once on a date the girl I was with told the waiter she didn't like the meal in the hope she could change it but was told tough This year I went with 8 other people as a works meal and when we asked for another round of drinks was told we had to see if we had enough time allowed for us to order anything else. This was around 6pm, we'd had one round of drinks with our meal and there was about 3 other people in the restaurant. Felt like they were working to not give us a service. Only had 8 or 9 things on the entire menu which was all very basic.

Visited SUD Pasta dinner. While the bruschetta with fava puree and wild broccoli friarielli was surprisingly good—even for someone who dislikes broccoli—the limited vegetarian options left my wife with only one choice, ‘Paccheri with smoky cruschi peppers,’ which, despite being the sole option, she enjoyed. The ‘House Sugo’ was rich and flavorful with 8-hour beef shin and pork shoulder, though it might be too spicy for some. The ‘Panna cotta al tiramisu’ was an interesting concept but fell short of expectations, lacking the expected fusion of panna cotta and tiramisu elements. But it was a good panna cotta. Overall, a recommended spot for pasta lovers. Booking ahead is wise, but we lucked out with a walk-in around 17:40. Despite the ups and downs, a solid 4-star experience for a satisfying pasta dinner. No Amex

We booked here at the last minute, having been let down by another restaurant. I'm soglad we did. All I can say is that the food blew me away. I had the Arancino with basil, sun dried Tom's and mozzarella with red pepper sauce. The prancing was crisp outside with an oozy, melting centre and a smooth, delicious red pepper sauce. I chose the Trofino with broccolini, anchovy butter, house chicken stock, chilli and parmesan pangratto. Each mouthful was fresh, vibrant and comforting on a rainy December evening. The panda cotta that my husband and I chose had a perfect wobble, was silky, creamy and was offset with the nice crunch of amaretto biscuit. Such a shame this restaurant is closing but am eager to see if the new incarnation has the same imagination with flavours and texture. I will be dreaming of that meal for some time to come. The serving staff were friendly, service was timely and unobtrusive and are a credit to the owners. All together, a wonderful culinary experience.

Exceptional food at very reasonable prices. We booked this restaurant because another restaurant let us down by cancelling our booking. I'm so glad we booked here though. The staff were all so friendly and helpful which really added to the dining experience. We both had the arancino for starter and it was amazing, lovely crispy outer and beautiful melted cheese ouzing out when you cut into it. The red pepper sauce that came with it was full of flavour. I had the Orecchiette 'house ragu' for main course and it was so delicious. The 8 hour cooked beef shin was so tasty. We both had the Panna Cotta for dessert and it just melted in the mouth. This was one of the best pasta meals we both have had in quite some time. Unfortunately they are closing at the end of 2023 and will be rebranding with a different menu. If the food at the new place is as good we will definitely be going back again.

Used to go here at least every couple of weeks, as the pasta was good and portion sizes were great. I dont know what theyve done with their menu now, but the pasta portions are now half the size but essentially the same price under the guise of "sharing", and their social media staff is extremely rude to anyone Ive seen point it out online. Wont go here anymore out of principle, and I know multiple of my friends who live in the ancoats area who were frequent customers wont either. Its not worth the hefty price tag thats now attached - if I want a more "expensive" atmosphere, I'll just go to the Sparrows. Wishing them luck in the rebrand, but their antics this year have left a bad taste in my mouth so wont be going again

Although we had booked in advance we were seated at a small table with another group, which made conversation more difficult, while half the restaurant was empty, so I don't know why they did that. The menu was very sparce, one vegetarian/vegan option which was a spicy pepper pasta that was decent but really too hot for me. My wine was served in a beer glass. Although I could have eaten a dessert the choice of two available didn't offer anything for me and so I left disappointed all round. Oh and don't bother trying to pay with cash that's no longer acceptable currency here. Won't be back.

As a self-proclaimed veteran of the Sugo / Sud pasta scene, it's a shame what this once glorious restaurant has now become. After all of their furore and social media gaslighting surrounding the move to the frankly abhorrent and ubiquitous "12 plates" small plates concept, Sud rightly saw the error of its ways and, in an attempt to win back its loyal customer base, decided to revert back to the old school Sud we all knew and loved. Or so we thought......... With claims (again on social media and beyond) that it was back to the older, much bigger portion sizes and a return to the "the good old days" (not dissimilar to my yearning for the return of the WWF Attitude Era of 1997-2002), myself and friends eagerly booked for a Sunday evening incredibly excited for what was to come and desperately looking forward to that House Sugo that leaves bellies full and cockles well and truly warmed. Unfortunately, the portion sizes (particularly of the House Sugo) were grossly underwhelming, with the £15.50 charge for a House Sugo and around a £40 a head cost leaving the wallet empty as well as the stomach. With the restaurant closing at the end of 2023 it is a sad, upsetting ending to a wonderful journey on the whole, much like the Russell Crowe epic Gladiator. "Are you not entertained!?!?!" Maximus screams as he disposes of enemies with ease on the battlefield...... This time, Sud, unfortunately I was not.

poor options for vegetarians and vegans, the only real option for veggies and vegans is a sad tomato pasta you can easily make at home. No imagination went into creating the dish. I suggest putting more energy into being more inclusive of other dietary requirements, rather than providing an incredibly basic pasta dish as the only option.

First time at Sud (after hearing all the hype) and thought we could try the £15 lunch… Upon arrival they told us the lunch-set is no longer available (could’ve deleted the post on their socials but wtv). Chicken wings - the yogurt sauce was delish but i’d rate it 3.5/5. Nothing special. Sugo Pasta - Very meaty and rich. tastes a bit like beef rendang if i can be honest. Trofie with Broccolini Pasta - This took me by surprise in a good way! Loved this. Tastes like ‘kailan ikan masin’ due to the anchovy butter. Would defo come back for this. All in all my experience of SUD is just… alright. Paid £50 for lunch. Could actually get better food for that price somewhere else. But that’s just my opinion :)

New menu and crazy price increases. A trip to Sugo/Sud is now twice the price with the small plates. Prior to the menu changes, my partner and I LOVED Sud. It was honestly our go to spot and nothing compared. The new changes however, meant that our visit last week was almost 40% more expensive and for the first time ever, we left feeling not very full at all. Almost £15 for the prawn dish, which was 3 prawns in batter with a creamy dip. To say that this was disappointing would be an understatement. Prior to the changes, we could spend £55-£65 for two pasta dishes and a half litre of wine. Our last visit saw us spend almost double for more variation of food but definitely not value for money. Also, the half litre of wine, definitely isn’t half a litre. We got just over a glass when before we got nearly two. We understand that the company were in financial difficulty, having released the pricing/profit margins for their most popular pasta dish HOWEVER, the current pricing is ridiculous. It seems Sud have just released news that the dishes will be changing drastically from 2024, we can only hope that the pice points/value for money also changes too, as we miss the old original Sud!

It really feels close-knit dining as there are not many covers, maybe 30? And the staff are wonderful, helpful, and really know their menus inside out. We had 2 antipastis, two pastas, and a bread with nduja honey butter to share. Great food and wine, great atmosphere, lovely open kitchen, and the main pastas are actually decent value considering the hours they’ve taken to make.

Small plates but a big joke. I am struggling to understand this new concept. The waiter said its like a tapas small plates, why would I need to try 3 different pasta dishes at one sit ? Really bizarre that I need to order 3 small dishes even if I only like one maybe two on the menu. Otherwise you sit with this joke small kid size plate with a very small portion. Seriously this is the most stupid new idea in the restaurant I ever seen. There is not even salt/pepper on the table none was even offered. I am out, Sud you are screwed ! Never again

But dissapointed when I ate here tonight to find its now yet another small plates restaurant and youre recomended to order 2-3 plates per person. I just want a big bowl of pasta. Really our whole table ordered and spent less than usual because we didnt want to do the small plates thing. We just wanted bowl of pasta each. And instead had a smaller bowl of pasta each. New small plates menu is a disaster. They say have 3 sides and 3 mains between two. Have only 2 veggie sides and two veggie mains. The owner writing that the pasta dishes are now “perfectly sized” when replying to another post is so out of touch is just ridiculous. Portion sizes are a joke. Used to be quite a regular here. Won’t be going back, neither will my friends. Some edits to recipes on the menu also… none for the better. Burrata off the menu is disappointing also. Seems to be consistent theme that turning up to your table bang on time means you wait for the table before you to finish paying before you’re seated also.

I had wanted to visit Sud for the longest time and am so gutted I have done after the menu change. The staff were helpful and friendly, venue was clean and well presented and the house wine was very good but that’s where the positives end for us unfortunately. We ordered under the recommended amount and still managed to spend £45 per head, with one of us not even drinking. The pasta portions seem to have gotten smaller (understandable with the move to small plates) but the prices have remained the same. The “bread for the table” was comically small, definitely isn’t “for the table” and would be a small portion even for one person. The house sugo wasn’t as saucy as it was at the Altrincham venue before the menu change (according to my partner) and felt a little dry. The broth for the mussels was too salty and overpowered the dish. I wish I’d read the reviews before booking as it seems many are echoing the same feelings I’ve had and the owner responding seems to be ignoring the fundamentals of what’s being said, that the food is now overpriced and the new menu isn’t as popular as the old.

Sud has always been a favourite of mine and I enjoyed tucking into the big bowls of pasta! I was slightly apprehensive about the new 12 plates model but decided to give it a go. While the food is still fabulous and our waiter was very sweet, I do think something has been lost in moving to small plates. It was a pricey meal and I didn't think it was great value - it sort or forces you into ordering a non-pasta dish each to bulk the meal out. I also felt there wasn't a lot of choice on the current menu for vegetarians. Overall, while I enjoyed the meal, it did make me miss the old Sud and its hearty portions.

This has always been my favourite restaurant in Manchester and will still be somewhere I go however it’s not the same and wasn’t a good experience with the new style menu. I went with my work after raving about the place for years and booking the restaurant under the old style menu. I noticed on Instagram that the menu had changed but we didn’t mind as I said the food was amazing. With the new style portions, we all ordered 3 things off the menu however as it comes when it’s ready we didn’t know the waiter had missed a meal off the order until everyone else had pretty much finished the rest of their food. Although we were offered to make one which would ‘take a few minutes’, there was not much point and the waiter made it seem like it’s an inconvenience to him. On top of this we were also waiting on a drink which we had ordered at the start of the meal and had to remind the staff as it had been missed off. The food here is still great and always will be but with the new style of restaurant, it’s no longer somewhere I recommend as frequently as I don’t think the flow of the meal works compared to other restaurants with a ‘it comes when it’s ready’ policy. It is slightly more expensive however this is understandable with the cost of living but again with the new style menu it still feels like like more than it should with this in mind

The biggest issue I had at SUD previously was always choosing what I wanted to eat as everything is incredible, but now you can have a bit of everything which is perfect for those who get menu fomo like me! And for small plates, there’s nothing small about them, the portions are huge! Amazing value for money without ever compromising on flavours and quality, I couldn’t recommend this place enough. Waaay too much chilli on two of the dishes made the overall experience unpleasant - made our noses run! Menu recommendation is '3 plates per person' but that's just too much food for one person even if you are really hungry - how about you make the portion sizes smaller and cut your prices a bit? This also means with a couple of drinks each the minimum spend for 3 plates each is more like £40-50 PP. 2 plates per person is plenty at those portion sizes! Serving staff really should have warned about two of the dishes we ordered being so firey hot because it spoiled the otherwise nice flavours and made the slightly undercooked pasta (was not al dente) difficult to digest. Atmosphere was dampened a little when 2 minutes after being served our food the server came over and sprayed cleaning fluid to clean the table next to us like we were in a fast food chain. Not the best!

Disappointed ☹️ I’ve been a loyal Sud (Sugo) goer since they opened, and I was so sad then they announced the 12 plate menu change, to me, their old menu was perfection, I couldn’t understand the change! I reserved judgement (tried to) until I tried the new concept. Went tonight, and (with tears) have to say, it just isn’t the same at all. I really wanted to enjoy the new style, but I was just left hungry, and depressed looking at my small bowl pasta. I immediately voice mnoted my friends (those that were there for our first Sugo outing of big hearty bowls) and told them that this may be the end! It’s weird one, because the food is tasty, but it just feels a bit tainted by this change, and it just lacked that excitement. It’s lost its edge! When you have bit competition in the pasta kitchen space now in Mcr, you should stick to what is really best! Big plates, big joyful bowls ❤️ Sorry, please return to the old ways!

This was my third time visiting Sud but the first time trying the new small plates menu and can honestly say I was not impressed. There is no denying the food tasted delicious, however the old style dining was much better. The price of the pasta “small plates” are not much different to the price of a full size portion, but the real shock was paying £9.50 for 3 meatballs!! Shrinkflation has hit hard at Sud. The restaurant was the quietest I’ve seen it with zero atmosphere. And going off the other reviews about the change up of the menu, I can understand why many will no longer be returning. We were intrigued by the 12 plate menu and knew we had to try it! I've been reading so many negative comments and reviews on it and honestly, I am so shocked because the food is genuinely better than before... the flavours are absolutely incredible and I'll always pay more money for good food!! Yes it's slightly more expensive (we paid £75 whereas it used to cost around £60) but honestly it was so worth it for the opportunity to try different dishes and different flavours rather than being tied into just getting one starter and one main each. Absolutely beautiful experience and beautiful food - will be travelling 50 mins on a regular occurance to keep my Sugo fix. Beautiful tasty food, in fact I would say one of the dishes I had was one of the most memorable dishes I've ever had. But I struggle with the 12 plates concept, which just seems to mean you pay an awful lot for very little actual calories. For example, 12pounds for just eighth mussels just seems too little. Also, be wary of the up selling, such as water for the table, which will end up costing you. If you accept that you are paying for the skill of cooking and the flavours of the dishes, then you will be very happy.

“Would you like to have some olives” don’t fall for this trick. we had 4 different pasta, we liked it a lot. we thought the olives were complimentary but they ended up charging us. DO NOT FALL FOR THE TRICKS

Well, the new menu changes may work for some people but they didn’t work for me 🙁 Came here in June and thought we’d come again tonight considering we loved it so much! Foolishly didn’t check the menu before we came. When we sat down we found it had changed massively, the portion sizes are now only “60%” of what they used to be which is a massive decrease really, and they recommend “2-3” dishes per person at £8.50 minimum per dish. Even with that as the minimum price, the average price was around £12 and the menu in terms of pasta choices seemed pretty limited? It felt like quite an expensive set up and to be honest, I just wanted a big bowl of pasta and the same experience we had last time. Safe to say because of the new style of menu we won’t be coming back. It’s a shame because the food is brill and service is great - our waitress was really lovely and explained the menu changes as best she could.

The food is really not as good as it was. Really small plates for the original price . We bought a bottle of wine for 47 pounds. The waiter did not even know that someone had to taste the wine before everyone tasted the wine...

The food is good but not worth putting up with staff attitude and cramped tables. Maybe because the food is good staff think they can get away with treating customer poorly, but their attitude overshadows the food. We attended as a group of 2 and they sat a completely separate group of 3 next to us, all on a 4 seater table with barely enough room to eat without clashing elbows with strangers.

Unfortunately don’t think SUD is as good as it used to be with the new menu. Appreciate costs for small businesses have went up, but would rather they increased the price of the old menu than introduced these small plates. They have also sadly changed...

Very good food! I recommend the Bruschetta, it’s not the traditional bruschetta, it’s very unique and slightly spicy, we really enjoyed it. The ragu pasta ( house sugo ) it’s very good, a very Italian taste. The staff is very nice, friendly and available!

Not to state the obvious but the best pasta in Manchester! I prefer small plates! It’s increased the amount of time I visit Sud as I can order smaller when it’s mid week, diet mode too😍

This new 12 plates concept isn’t my thing. Being greedy isn’t going to get you loyalty and as I’m reading these reviews, it’s clear I’m not the only one who is turning the page on this place. Their pasta is good, I’m not going to write a review about that because people already know that. This review is just to let the owners know that in their quest to get higher turnover per cover, they are in fact and in the longer term going to reduce their overall covers. When you change your menu back to how it was before, let us know and we’ll come back.

Came here on a Monday evening for an anniversary meal. The food was really good - albeit pricey for an Italian, but we knew this in advance and with all good restaurants, expected the experience/atmosphere of the place to make up for this. We enjoyed our meal and the place up until 40 minutes after being seated, when we had a couple sat directly next to us, shoulder to shoulder. We are completely fine with communal seating arrangements and on entering the premises knew this was the case with long tables, but with a gap between each setting. We were placed however, on a small four person table - that for two couples out together would have been fine, but when it is a stranger led to a wholly tense and unusual experience. The table we had did not have any gaps between us and the couple that joined us and they too were unsure of the situation. We promptly paid our bill and left - completed disappointed in what we would have considered a good experience up to this point. On leaving the restaurant, we called up to provide feedback and was advised this is "normal" and this was on their website, although the manager admitted they had mixed reviews on the seating. We would not find any clear and obvious sections on their site mentioning this. In future I'd advise notifying people in advance for this particular table we were sat on. No-one wants to pay £100 for Italian to be sat shoulder to shoulder.

I’ve loved this place from the very beginning and gotta say I love it even more now they’ve launched 12 plates! Who wouldn’t want to try multiple delicious dishes??? Thank you for making a three pasta lunch totally acceptable! Stand out dishes - meatballs, grilled chicory, Trofie and the Pacherri was like a religious experience! Service was gorgeous as always, and plenty of space on the shared tables for all the plates!!!! Thanks for a mega lunch!

This used to be my go-to place for a hearty bowl of pasta. Well, hearty it’s no more. They’ve recently changed the menu to 2-3 “small plates per person” with no option for a normal sized pasta bowl. If you want to leave full AND eat pasta, you are forced to spend extra 15-20£ on top of what you normally would. In all honesty, I don’t get this buisness model change, from a local pasta place to an Italian tapas wanna-be. If you want to pay extra for your pasta and appetisers then go to The Sparrows, and now for a hearty bowl of pasta it’s Pasta Factory. For a nice small pasta, it’s Onda pasta. Sadly SUD won’t be on my pasta list anymore although the pasta is good. Not gud. Also the tables are awfully overcrowded. On the bright side, the pasta is still delicious. But as I mentioned above, it’s not the only delicious pasta place around. For the hearty portion of delicious pasta it definitely used to be the best.

Still really good. Staff and food are great. New menu, not so much. I'd prefer to pay more for what I always came here for instead of meagre portion control purporting to be a small plates concept. They're certainly small. I'll give them that. Shame.

The new ‘small plates’ menu just didn’t work. Far better places in Manchester for small plates. £91 for 2 small bruschettas, 3 cereal bowls of pasta, 1 cannoli & half litre of wine. Everything was tasty, but just far too expensive. Bring back the old...

Amazing food - possibly some of the best dishes I've ever eaten. Complex and layered flavors. Enjoyed the small plate concept, which allowed us to try many different items. Staff were super nice. We ran late due to travel delays, and they accommodated our needs when we called to push our reservation later.

This afternoon I went to casa italia and I ordered two hot chocolate. I already know this place, and as soon as I entered no greeting, no one seat you in the table, all the tables are creammed each other and the lady seated us in a small table where I was tight with someone sitting behind me, but very close to me that I barely move. So I moved to another table myself. The hot chocolate came and it was good, but not too good as the Italian hot chocolate must to be tick and the hot chocolate I had was pale and milky, but the taste was good. The price for two hot chocolate was exaggerate 8 pounds. No customer service at all, no prices displayed in the items they sell and all the tables were dirty. It is a small place. It is not difficult clean 4 small tables and if you do this job, you must have a good customer service. I work in a restaurant and I know very well the job. This was my third time in domus italia and things hasn't change. I won't come back
