We have been regular visitors to the Sugar Loaf Tea Rooms, loyalty card and all. Due to the current Covid situation we've only really just begun visiting our favourite places again and as well as wanting to support the smaller businesses, this was meant to be a lovely brunch treat for us. Sadly, we will never return again. It's rare for us to complain. The cafe was only one third full with plenty of staff FOH who were not rushed off their feet. There were issues with the majority of the items we ordered including a miniscule, microwaved, rock hard croissant costing £2.50! ( Starbucks comparison @£1.75) The presentation was poor and the lack of information between staff to customer, the same. Note to manager: ALWAYS BE ACCOMMODATING TO YOUR CUSTOMERS! It's not difficult! Train your staff not to talk about your customers where they can clearly see you, rather, find somewhere private! Remember, you are NEVER better than your customers! Apologise and wow them! Offer solutions not excuses, never pass the buck and if you want to keep your job and business thriving (especially under current situations), give a FULL refund when your disappointed customer asks for one! We were incredibly insulted and belittled and sadly, we will NEVER return again. Speaking as one who's whole family is in the hospitality industry, I'd advise you to go and get some serious customer relations training!

There was me and 2 of my friends that went for breakfast around 9.30am. The atmosphere and decoration of the tea rooms is lovely, calming and comforting. We sat down and ordered our drinks which took about 20-25 minutes to come which I thought was due to them being under staffed but had not told us that food and drinks may be slightly delayed due to this, which would of been nice to know. The food wasn't great but wasn't horrible, aside from receiving a fried egg instead of a poached, the hash browns were delicious and we ended up ordering a plate of 6 separately. When taking our plates away the young man did ask how our food was which we did point out wasn't great but he didn't ask for any further detail as I don't think he was expecting our response to be the way it was. Overall it wouldn't say it was the best experience but also not the worse but location and setting is lovely.

A few days ago a fried and I visited for breakfast and we both ordered eggs benedict and hot drinks. As usual the hot drinks came a long time before the food. When the eggs finally arrived they were solid, not runny as they should be. I attracted the attention of a female member of staff who said "Is everything OK?" to which I replied "No". She then told me to "hurry up, as I've got to get back to the kitchen". I was so surprised that I said "Is that the proper way to talk to a customer?" and she quickly replied "Sorry, go on".

Lovely setting and beautiful tea room! Staff were attentive and COVID regulations were organised! We ordered some breakfasts which were all served promptly. However, I don’t eat dairy so asked for a veggie breakfast without eggs and butter on toast as there wasn’t a vegan option. When the breakfast was served, they mentioned that I couldn’t have the mushrooms as they were cooked in butter so I had 1 hash brown, some beans, tomatoes and veggie sausage. For £7 I’d have thought they would have added an extra portion of something as the plate was quite bare! I didn’t really understand why the mushrooms couldn’t have just been cooked without butter 🤷🏼♀️ I’d just like to highlight this so that maybe a vegan option can be thought about a bit more.

It was busy but all tables were spread out adhering social distancing. Staff all worked so hard and still had time to ensure everyone was ok. Can't understand the previous, thoroughly negative review. Our experience was the polar opposite. Hand sanitiser in place, all staff wearing masks or visors, tables well spaced out and thorough cleaning of tables in evidence, plus our details taken for Test and Trace purposes. Felt very clean and safe.Anyway, on to the main event, the food! A slightly reduced menu is available, basically breakfast, sandwiches, panini and jacket potatoes. I had a Cheese and Ham Sandwich accompanied by salad, coleslaw and vegetable crisps. My husband had a Jacket Potato with Cheese, with the same accompaniments. The food was fresh, tasty and delicious and the portions were huge! This was supposed to be a light lunch, but we didn't eat again all day! It's always busy here, a sign of how good this place is, would always throughly recommend.

My husband and I have eaten at the tea rooms a number of times prior to lockdown and always enjoyed it and we were keen to go back. I was a little dubious about going out to eat since I had to self isolate throughout the whole lockdown period due to a serious illness however I needn’t have worried. I booked a table as I didn’t want to risk waiting around; upon arrival they have a clear one way system, you are greeted by a member of staff who identifies if you have booked, we were shown to our table and informed that the whole menu was available on the wall. The tables are well spaced and all table service which was very efficient. There were a number of ‘walk ins’ asking if any tables were free and the staff did what they could to accommodate these customers. They have a good selection of food and the cakes are amazing (I’m gluten free and they have good options). Overall a pleasant experience and recommended.

Myself and my family love this place and would regularly attend, so today I took my girlfriend for the first time out since lockdown, and disappointed is a total understatement, I personally would struggle to go back and certainly would not recommend anyone to go there whilst social distancing measures are still present. As soon as we walked in we were left standing at the desk with staff just talking behind it, it took a few minutes before we were even greeted with a simple hello, then we were took to our table where we were told that we “should be able to see the menu from here” of which I can say that we couldn’t without great difficulty. We then ordered a pot of tea for two, recieved two separate mugs with no milk, that we had to ask for and took another couple of minutes to arrive. At this point we were a bit taken aback by the lack of service but it was topped off when our food arrived without cutlery and was just dropped on the table and left, we had to ask ourselves for cutlery and sauce which took another few minutes, by which the food which was not originally hot had already gone cold. I’m not a complainer at all and I hate doing so, in fact this is the first negative review I have ever written on any place I’ve eaten at, but my experience today was utterly appalling, anything that the service could’ve done wrong they did and I for one won’t be returning in the near future.

Jacket potato with prawns marie rose for me & spicy chicken burger with chips for him. Food arrived quickly and very generous servings of everything. The only off key item were the vegetable crisps on my plate. For a start - who needs crisps alongside a jacket potato? And the crisps were so sweet they were inedible as part of a savoury meal. Meals £7 each so quite a bargain.

Me and my friend visited here to try something different as it was my birthday. On first appearances the place looks great! However after ordering, the food came out in a suspiciously quick time. This became concerning as my plate was hotter than the food. They took it back and replaced my meal however no apology was given. My friends food was cold also and eggs extremely over done but she didn’t want to cause a fuss so left it. But a waitress came over and she explained her eggs were over done and bacon hardly done, her food was taken back kindly. Unfortunately we were then approached by another staff member, who was very unapologetic and attempted to argue with us about bacon saying we should have asked for it to be well done. In all respects me and my friend are chefs and would not find it acceptable to serve food at this standard while the bacon has zero colour and looking raw. Once again no apology was given and approach was borderline aggressive from this individual staff member. Furthermore, I could see this staff member discussing the situation with others in a very unprofessional manner. She did place a refund on the table without us asking however, it was incomplete.

We visited on Saturday 28th September for afternoon tea, which had been booked since early September, as a surprise birthday treat for a close friend. This was on my recommendation as I had been before. At the till we announced who we were and that we were there for afternoon tea. We were shown to a reserved table, served a pot of tea and presented with a two-tier cake stand of delicious cakes, sandwiches, a pot of jam and cream, but only two scones. When we queried this, the waitress said she would go and get another one. However, she came back, asked to confirm our name and removed the cake stand; we asked if we could speak to the person who took the booking. Unfortunately, this was like waving a red rag to a bull: it was the manager who took the booking. She came to see us with her diary of bookings and according to her we had only booked a table. It was in her writing, and she would have made a note of any allergies and taken a deposit. Well she didn’t ask, or mention allergies, or request a deposit, and therefore we were in the wrong. No apologies, no ‘mistakes happen’, nothing but rudeness, humiliation, and a downright abrupt manner. Also, if she knew it was a birthday there would have been balloons and cake. Well that made us feel a lot better! We were told to vacate the table straight away as it needed to be made up for the people who had actually booked afternoon tea; however we had no help in carrying our drinks to another table across the tea room, which I think was to point out to everyone that we had sat at the wrong table. We did order food and had three lovely meals as we did not wish our friend to miss out completely, but after this experience we won’t be visiting again.

I've been here before and had a lovely experience, but this time not so much. We visited on a weekday and it was quite busy but we had no trouble finding a table. My friend wanted a breakfast but, when I went to order, I was told by a sulky lady on the till that they only serve breakfasts until 12pm (it was 12:10pm but fair enough). There is nothing on the menu to state this however or - at least as far as I could see - any sign telling you. My friend was a little put out but chose something else - with a bit of difficulty as the vegetarian options on the menu are extremely limited. I asked a server about the 'no breakfasts served after 12pm' notice and why it wasn't on the menu. She thought it was on some of the menus but not all of them, which is a bit silly if that is the case.

Been here a few times and always been pleasant! However on this occasion was a little let down. Why put the toast on the breakfast plate when it’s swimming in tomato juice? You end up with soggy toast..... and the breakfast was just about Luke warm at its best. one lad who was either related or contractor in dirty work clothes going behind the counter helping himself to drinks.... doesn’t look good from the customers view. Only little things but the little things add up... found it hard to find a table that didn’t have a reserved or laid up from afternoon tea at 1pm.??? Surely you are loosing revenue! Put a simple sigh on the table saying you are welcome to use this table until ??? 12.30 then this gives you half an hour to turn it around. The staff do look unhappy ☹️ too. I agree the food could be hotter and the sausages could be plain. I do find it frustrating you can’t change some of your items. We just order now and swop ourselves it saves the hassle. It is such a shame because with some strong management this little things could be simply fixed. It’s a little gem in all honesty.

My wife and I have used this tearoom at High down nursery for a while now. It's a beautiful place with friendly staff and wonderful food in terms of flavour and portion size. I have to have a gluten free diet and was delighted to find gluten free Plaice gujons with sweet chilli sauce and salad on the menu. I was the first coeliac person to have the pleasure of trying this new offering. It was simply gorgeous! They also had Thai prawn and salmon fish cakes as well as a good range of gluten free cakes. They also have gluten free buns if you fancy an eggs benedict or eggs royal. If you're coeliac and in the Stourbridge, Kinver, Kidderminster locality give it a try. Also baked potatoes with gluten free fillings available, served with salad and vegetable crisps. These make for a very filling lunch. Whatever you choose from the menu Sophie and her team will make sure you are well catered for. Just in answer to someone on here who had a rant about 'afternoon tea'. The management ask for notice and a booking so that they can give the best food freshly prepared for the occasion. This takes a lot of planning so turning up and asking for an extra place really puts a spanner in the works for such an event.

We have visited this cafe numerous times and found the food and service good but our visit on Friday was dreadful. My daughter had booked afternoon tea for two as a treat from Mothers' Day, then at the last minute my husband joined us. Crime of the century!! We moved across to an unreserved table for 4: what a furore it caused, even though we took the afternoon tea service crockery and cutlery to be helpful. One waitress came over and told us that they needed 24 hours' notice for afternoon tea: no problem, my husband was very happy to choose from the lunch menu. In the meantime my daughter had gone to the till to order, pay and tell them we had changed tables, whereupon the person on the till was less than friendly and discussed this with a colleague. After waiting a few minutes, my daughter came back to the table, followed shortly by a waitress who told us we should have chosen a square rather round table because they weren't safe for an afternoon tea service- really??!! Who knew?

After 30 minutes and noticing people were getting food who arrived after us we asked where our food was (the place was not at all busy at this time and there were at least 6 members of staff wandering around the counter). After a while a very polite lady did come and explain our order had been confused with another table and put on the “ done” pile (i noticed the other table had similar order to us). We were offered free drinks but really they need to get their act together. When our order arrived after a total wait time of 40 minutes my toast was black in parts and inedible. I couldn't be bothered waiting again so left it. Its not cheap either. My daughter could not believe the same thing had happened twice in a couple of days. Someone ( management) needs to take a good hard look at the way the staff are handling things and sort it out quickly because our experiences were just not good enough!

We hadn't planned on visiting for food but thought we would see if they had a table. Being mother's Day it was very busy with pre-bookings. However we were given a table quickly.

My family went in the cafe for a drink and a snack at 10am and after ordering our food we hunted round for a table that did not have a reserved sign on. We finally found one but after sitting there for 10 minutes we were asked to move as it was set for afternoon tea. Why was it set that early in the morning when it was packed!! We once again set off to find a table which was proving to be frustratingly irritating when a member of staff finally steered us to a table with a reserved plaque on. When I queried why we were being sat there she said " it's not booked until 1.45 " so again its 10 am and rammed, why dont they let these tables be used until the breakfast rush hour is over. It spoilt what was supposed to be a treat and I dont think we'll be returning any time soon.

I usually love this place, good fresh, plentiful food and a nice atmosphere. As a result I decided to book an afternoon tea for my mum for Mother’s Day. An afternoon tea should be an indulgent treat but this was disappointing. The sandwiches were fresh but the fillings boring-plain cheese, ham, egg and salmon. There were no savoury pastries, the selection of cakes were all very small pieces and the scone clearly microwaved from frozen. I normally leave an afternoon tea either very full and unfinished or with bits to take home but we finished all of this and I was hungry later. At £18 a head I wish I’d bought one of your normal tasty sandwiches and a slice of cake for half the price. Sadly, I wouldn’t recommend this to anyone. normally I would have spoken to someone but didn’t want to spoil mum mum’s afternoon.

Discovered this place today, the cafe is spotless good selection of cakes drinks and meals. I’d like to see some wrapped gluten free cakes but they do have some homemade. Average prices but big pot of tea!

Visited this tearoom on Wednesday 27 March at 12.40 The tea room was extremely busy with reserve signs on at least 4 tables, this I don’t see to be a problem as customers are coming in within 15 mins to have lunch and they have taken the trouble to book ahead, however there were no tables free at this time and others were coming in behind me and my friend also hoping to get seated. A table for 2 was laid up for “Afternoon tea” at 2.30 so we asked if we could use this table providing we vacated it by 2.30 . A member of staff replied saying this wasn’t possible as we would dirty the tablecloth! The tablecloth was only a smaller runner which along with the chinaware could easily of been taken off the table. The staff member called the manager, a very rude lady who told us that she wasn’t prepared to take a chance on us sitting there. She asked us to sit on a sofa at the top end of the tearoom and wait until a table became available, despite the fact others were now also coming in behind us and no one was monitoring table allocations. We decided to leave and go to Ashwood Nurseries a much better option. I can’t believe this tearoom chooses to loose business over the main lunch time, by laying up tables 2 hours ahead of arrival, the manager also needs a lesson in people skills. I won’t bother returning again.

Went for lunch last week. It was very busy but luckily we had reserved a table. I opted for the Brocolli & Stilton quiche but you couldnt taste the cheese or see much broccoli in the quiche. My portion size was small and it was a corner piece with more pastry. My partner had the beer battered cod with chips which he said was very nice and not overloaded with batter. However, at £12, we thought it was a tad overpriced. The chips were Oven chips and some of the chips were uncooked. The salad with my quiche nice. Pot of tea for one is no longer an option - instead it's a large mug of tea which isn't very appealing. Not sure whether it's the high ceiling but it is very noisy in the restaurant when busy and when there are children playing the Play Pen !!!! The other criticism is the male member of staff behind the counter could do with a clean tea shirt. The one he was wearing was dirty !!

Our first breakfast surprised us because it was so good and have been several times since then, just love the sausages and the toast is crusty bread which is cut so thick, always cooked fresh, yet to eat a better one, coffee included in the price. Service is always with a smile.

Hi visited your tea rooms on Wednesday 8th March with my family I was really disappointed and really taken back with the attitude of the service staff . I don't really eat much on a dinner time so I asked for half a prawn sandwich was told can't do that we can wrap the other half up to take away !!!! As I was going to work did I want to take a sandwich with me No so as I needed to eat on a long shift I had to pay FULL PRICE £6.00 for 1/2 a sandwich I was absolutely disgusted I work in a local tea rooms and if a customer asks for 1/2 we give them what they want so not to loose there custom also from work today went to the cat at enville asked the same question what a difference Yes was the answer and also charged half price also the staff was polite and went out of their to help you WHAT a difference Keep ur Customers Happy and they will come back or just be greedy and not even bothered what your customers what but just have ur money !!! I know where I will be going

I used Highdown regulary prior to 2004 when we moved abroad. It was a delightful place knowledgeable staff (family) and no Tea room in sight. It was always a joy to go there. Move on to 2018/19. We are now back in Worcestershire and busy planning a garden - from scratch for our new house. Visited twice late last year, and apart from a gentleman of the till, no staff to ask for advise - all at a horticultural show, fair enough, went back a few weeks later still no staff, so left it until this year. Went again 4/5 weeks ago, and despite the car park being very busy all customers were in the cafe, and as we walked around for about 40 minutes could see no one- staff or customers. Eventually found an employee, who was kind enough to try and find a knowledgeable 'Plant/ Shrub etc" person, no no avail, however, the man on the till was summons we showed him our lists of plants (approx 300 pounds worth) and asked for advise re when to buy and when to plant, this conversation took place by the till, but he couldn't leave his spot. Yesterday we tried once more, and walked around the displays of plants and could get no advise - all staff were AT LUNCH. We went elsewhere and spent our cash. A few car boot loads but no thanks to Highdown . They should remember they are firstly a Garden centre NOT a cafe.

Normally eat here on Monday Lunchtimes. Always opt for the Jacket potato with topping. Very tasty food. Seen reports where there were complaints of slow service but I have to say I have never experienced this. My longest wait has probably no more than 10 minutes - if that? It is a fact that Highdown is fast becoming a place where mothers and toddlers tend to meet up - this in turn means that young children may be playing/crying etc. If that does not cause you any problem then you will enjoy your lunch at Highdown. Lunchtimes can and does get pretty busy

We all opted for vegetable soup and were all disappointed. A very thin watery liquid with globules floating. It was like cooked veg in watery stock. Not appetising at all.

We had a wonderful evening for my Mum and Aunt's surprise 70th Birthday party. The staff could not have been any more helpful in the planning stages and made sure that everything was perfect. We had a package that included everything from he cake and balloons to afternoon tea, prosecco and children's buffet. They catered for gluten free, vegetarian and nut allergy admirably and without any difficulty. We were made to feel very special and the birthday girls loved it. I cannot recommend this ace and it's staff highly enough.

Lots of seating but very busy as I would expect on a Saturday afternoon so a short wait for a table - we hadn't reserved as it was our first visit. Very friendly, smiling helpful staff. Nice selection of food on menu. The wait was a bit long but the food was worth waiting for: we had a sandwich with chips, a ciabatta with chips, jacket potatoes with different fillings and hot drinks- food and drinks quality and presentation were excellent and portions were ample and we really enjoyed them. We didn't visit the nursery garden centre so can't comment. If you're not in a great hurry then I recommend the Sugarloaf tearooms. Also - we didn't have the afternoon tea but it did look scrumptious! Will definitely return!

The tea rooms are lovely. Spacious. And the food is divine. It’s a shame that the young inexperienced staff let it down. Slow acknowledgement at the counter. Several hanging around behind the counter not sure what to do. 3 of us ordered our lunch. Several minutes later another girl came to the table to tell us the girl who served us didn’t know they had run out of what we asked for. Slow bringing the drinks over. Went and bought some cake to take away, again slow service. Not sure if these girls are getting the training they need. It needs addressing. Don’t let it put you off. Just be prepared for lack of customer service.

Went for breakfast on a Sunday morning, having read the mixed comments on service lead times. Do not be put off and simply acknowledge excellent tasty food served at your table at amazing prices. £7 for a Goliath breakfast with tea or coffee. Yes , it was busy (due to value and excellent surroundings) yes, you queued for order, yes, you waited for drinks to be served and then hot food to be served. But if you want fast food go to McDonald’s! I loved the fact you weren’t rushed. Perhaps book table if large party so they know service levels in advance and enjoy some good conversation or a paper. Well done Highdown Nurseries.

Brought my mom here for lunch on a cold, wet January day, and it was packed! That tells you a lot about a place that's rather off the beaten track and that you'd expect to be busy in Spring and Summer but not in the depths of Winter! We managed to find a table though and ordered sandwiches and drinks. Both arrived fairly quickly considering how busy they were, and the sandwiches were delicious! The bread was so fresh it was as though it had been freshly baked, and it was accompanied by a lovely salad, homemade coleslaw and vegetable crisps, which as a rule I don't like, but these were fab!

This is a lovely tearoom and well worth the drive out. But it's worth going early as it can get extremely busy at weekends and lunchtimes. We arrived once at 1pm and couldn't get a table so had to leave. But it was close to Christmas so to be expected for a really nice place. Gorgeous sandwiches and cakes on our last visit. Staff very friendly even when rushed off their feet.

Booked a table for lunch for a large group of us. It took 20 minutes just to place our order at the counter. At which point we were told that there was an HOUR - yes an hour's wait for food. As a result 3 of our group ordered lunch and the rest ate cake and toast. Sadly this wasn't what we wanted and for the owners, they too are loosing out as we didn't spend anywhere near as much as we would have done had the service/wait been reasonable.

Having used the cafe next door and not being impressed, I decided to get my breakfast sandwich to takeaway before leaving for my journey home-so glad I did, what a breakfast it was!!! Being a pig I ordered the sandwich king special - what a sandwich! I could taste the difference in quality and was dead impressed. Took a homemade sausage roll back with me too, not that I could eat it until the evening but it gives Greggs a run for their money for sure. Back in the area in Nov so will be stopping off again to maybe try one of their lunch time specials.

Beautifully decorated, warmly welcomed- and that when it ends The food was very poor. Tiny over priced portions, no side salad. Fish finger sandwich, hardly any filling and what was there was overcooked and crunchy with a meagre portion of chips. Such a shame as the staff are exceptionally good and the interior is beautiful .
