Dog poo in the garden area yet again! I’ve reported this every time and it’s disappointing that yet again trying to find a space for the children to play that isn’t scattered with dog poo! Obviously not maintained or checked every day as this is one of many visits. The girls that wait on always very lovely. The lady in charge didn’t seem to be bothered when I reported to her and no apologies. Shame.

Visit this place regular on Thursday afternoon after business in Ruthin Livestock Mart. I am 83 years of age born in the war and seen a lot and recognise reasonable and unreasonable people. GERALLY people in groups from urban areas fall distinctavely into two groups Either compassionate caring people who appreciate the presence of others and the difficulties small businesses have coping with fluctuating demands On the other hand a distinctive collection of people usually rdtirees from ths public employment sector who are entitled to everything on their terms and i can guess who is giving these disgustingly unrepresentztive reviews of the sugarplum This business is oustanding and staff delightful

What a disappointment! My friend and I booked a table over the phone for 11 am with a view to having coffee and lunch at a venue we have always enjoyed. After coffee and at about 12.20 we asked and we’re given the lunch menu, then about 10 minutes later another staff member came to the table and told us our table was booked til 1 pm so we couldn’t have lunch and would have to leave. We said we hadn’t been told this on booking or arrival and were firmly informed that ‘most places only allow a two hr booking and it says that online’. We said we hadn’t booked on line and didn’t know, accepted we couldn’t have lunch and ordered another coffee, which we had to ask for a couple of times before it arrived ..after drinking it we left. We expressed our disappointment at the paying desk too and were again dismissed as if it was our fault. So the point of our review is to say that the staff did not at any time say they were sorry we hadn’t had the right information, or were sorry we couldn’t have lunch…… in fact we felt they couldn’t wait for us to go which was upsetting. Very poor customer care (sadly)

There’s nothing better in life than a blooming good tearoom but instead of meeting a Sugar Plum Fairy, we were faced with the Wicked Witch of the North! As part of an experienced 30+ strong walking group, many over the age of 40, we had chosen this for our lunch stop. We know how difficult it is for small businesses to accommodate us, so we always contact them to let them know we’d like to visit. Most will explain their difficulties but do their utmost to make us feel us welcome. We don’t mind waiting, we don’t mind sitting outside, we don’t mind using the toilets on a rota basis, so I was absolutely mortified to get there and see other members of the group being shouted at from the door by a staff member to leave the premises and ‘don’t come back’. We’re not a rowdy bunch and we didn’t all try to pile in. We had emailed them prior that we just wanted to order takeaway coffees and a cake. We didn’t try to sit at the unused outdoor seating, we congregated in the car park. I have never in my life felt so humiliated at the endless rudeness of this lady screaming at us, and we all left more than a little upset. I have no doubt that if you’re a local or a small party there for afternoon tea you may just enjoy it. If you couldn’t accommodate us then there are polite ways of telling us so, like replying to our email, but I really don’t understand why you would advertise takeaways in a rural walking area if you haven’t even got enough cups, as was screamed at us across the car park! The really sad thing is I’ve recently moved close to the area and was desperately looking for a friendly, quality tearoom to take friends and family when they visited, unfortunately this tearoom won’t be the place. I can only assume that business must be doing very well if you can afford to turn away a minimum £150 worth of business on a quiet Sunday afternoon…or walking groups are beneath you. Either way the Sugar Plum Fairy has now floated into the ether for me. Never again.

We were having a little lunch ourselves, when I witnessed the owner shouting at a group of ladies outside. I didn't couldn't hear the full conversation but was aware that the owner was screaming at these women who appeared to be a group of walkers perhaps? None of the women from the group entered the tea room and stayed out in the car park area. They remained very calm and didn't scream and yell back. While the owner thundered on about them having to leave the premises. I saw all this as I was outside having a cigarette. Once back inside the owner continued her tirade of shouting and disgruntlement of her encounter. Which made it very unbearable to the few people who were inside having food. We will never come again.

A group of walkers tried to buy take away drinks and cake, to be told no, we were prepared to wait outside - we were asked to leave there premises and not come back. That was quite a bit of money they turned away, not very good business sense in my opinion as not many could afford to lose that much business, instead they have 30 plus very disappointed people who would certainly not be recommending them. The tea rooms was advised on a walking page as stating that walkers are welcome - clearly not, don’t bother, in fact it’s false advertising

Where do I begin to say how unfriendly, unaccommodating, and unprofessional the member of staff was today. I took my group for a walk on a specific locally printed walk . 34 of us. I did message the night before to ask if ok to go and purchase just takeouts . Coffees/cakes etc on our walk so we could then go on our way and find a good field to sit and enjoy with the whole group as I knew they’d be busy on a Sunday. After no direct reply stating they couldn’t accommodate, my group turn up on luck hoping in the cold they’d be able to purchase and move on as takeaway stated on internet. To my horror as I arrived last of my group, I find myself in a very confronting situation with the staff member in picture kicking off at my group. Now, my group go all over the place walking. We are one of the well known groups around . A lovely bunch of walkers. The woman was so rude and obnoxious in a very strange and nasty manor and was shooing my group on. One had entered to ask if he could buy take outs and the woman came out ranting. The group were waiting for me to arrive to calm the situation but I walked into same attitude from same member of staff. Waving arms, telling us all to get off her premises and never come back! Really!! Like all was asked was to purchase takeaways and move on. We even don’t mind waiting to be served as we know 34 ppl is a lot . But I had asked. I was never given a polite reply,” sorry we are not able to serve so many!” Instead I’m greeted with,” we only have 22 takeout cups and you need 34, we are too busy and Want you to leave the premises attitude. Like, what on earth. Certainly not good customer service. The longer the group waited for me to discuss and finalise the issue with staff, they started to get their lunch out. Don’t blame them. They were hungry . Is this the way to treat English walkers bringing alot of business to a tearoom in these unpresendented times when hospitality is under pressure since covid?- no!! And no -one will speak to my group like this. They weren’t using toilets. They weren’t in the garden seating area or anything. They were in the car park outside hoping to buy takeouts as it was cold and wanted it to go with their lunch. I only opened my mouth to receive a torrent of abuse. This place needs to give its head a wobble. They are on a walking route offering takeouts and we were happy to wait if busy. They then try to tell me I haven’t booked! Since when do you book a takeaway? lol 😂 They can keep their coffee and cakes. We won’t be returning anyway! Never have my group been turned away or spoken to in this way . Downright rude. The woman was antagonising them the more she shood them off the car park. They were shocked. They stood in disbelief. There is ways to speak to people. No one threatened her. I will not recommend this place to other groups . Disgusted . Not even worth 1 star in my opinion. Cannot comment on food or drink as never got chance to try it! They lost in excess of £150 in takeouts.

We also noticed an afternoon tea on the table next to us (we asked to take a photo) looked delicious 👏👏. 5/5 👜 handbag cafe review well worth a trip out 👍 Mug Run

Cakes, brownies and jam/cream scones all proved too much for one sitting so we had the leftovers boxed to eat at home later. The staff as always are friendly and attentative, the main menu is always packed with locally sourced produce with their homemade cakes some if the best in the area. Well worth a visit.

Usually pleased with the experience at Sugar Plum Tea Rooms. Have been coming here since it first opened many years ago. Not quite up to their usual standards this morning, unfortunately. My chair hadn’t been wiped after the previous client and the staff member whom I mentioned it to didn’t seem particularly bothered. When I asked her to get a cloth to clean it after she’d picked up the “residue chip” I felt quite uncomfortable with her attitude. Top of chair was also sticky. I didn’t ask her to come back again to deal with that. My husband had a sausage toastie. Not their usual standard of presentation, just cut in half with no finesse whatsoever. Might as well have gone to a roadside cafe and paid far less. However, the coffee is always good. Please retain the standards we are used to at such a lovely venue.

At £20 per head this must be the most excellent tea in the country. So often afternoon tea majors on the sweet over the savoury but here, as well as three different types of finger sandwiches there is a warm quiche, warm sausage roll and warm savoury scones with butter and pickle. Then come the sweets - scones with jam and lashings of cream, meringues with cream and strawberries, lemon cake and chocolate brownies. Everything is homemade and obviously so. A huge selection of teas and coffees with unlimited replacements. We had to bring home the brownies as we were beaten. Altogether recommended 100% and I will visit again. NB - you need to book ahead.

Really saddens me to be writing this, this has been one of my favourite places for over 10 years but this is the second visit in a couple of months where the food has been terrible, and today I don’t feel the staff were overly friendly either. Visited for a birthday treat with friends, had to ask to be served, then the waitress appeared a little miserable. Food came out and I’d ordered a Grilled Halloumi salad, at £10.70 I expected a nice full salad, what I was actually presented with was a small amount of chopped bits at the bottom of a bowl, no eggs as stated and quite frankly no where near enough salad for £10.70! I sent it back for the eggs only for it to then be brought back out with avocado instead and told they had no eggs. I do not like avocado so at this point I sent it back and didn’t eat anything. The member of staff (sue) was apologetic and offered me chips, but I’m currently trying to make better food choices and was looking forward to a nice salad. As this is the second bad visit recently I am afraid I won’t be back. Such a shame as it’s a beautiful place but has really gone downhill recently.

We visited for breakfast after finding this place on google. The location is just lovely. Quirky little cottage with and indoor area and grassed area outdoors with picnic tables and umbrellas. Staff where absolutely lovely and friendly. They actually showed interest in their customers of where they come from. We visited when it was very quite early morning therefore the food and drinks came out fast and hot and we could not fault it. On the second occasion when we visited they where really busy and the food level dropped to average with some items cold on the plate. Overall I would go back again as I said the staff made you feel very very welcome.

Heard good things but unfortunately we didn't rate it on our visit today. Ordered the last lemon scone in the display cabinet it came warm on the outside cold in the middle like it had been microwaved... very dry, almost stale, couldn't eat it. They agreed to take it off the bill. There wasn't much choice on cakes in the cabinet today. The pancakes looked amazing but we didn't see them on the menu. Ended up just having a pot of tea. Didn't end up getting our water we asked for and had to ask twice for the cream for the scone. Maybe just a bad day. But unfortunately we won't be returning because of that. Felt like we got challenged a little bit on the way out by a lady staff member over the scone. Not for us.

Out walking in the area around Rhewl, having parked in the little carpark there, I googled somwhere to have lunch. We turned up at The Sugar Plum Tearooms. Of course it was very busy and we hadn’t booked. We told them we would be quick and they shuffled sittings around to accommodate us. Which they didn’t have to 🥰 They were brilliant doing this for us and we told them How much we appreciated it. So glad they did….. all the staff were so lovely. But Sue made our visit very comfortable and enjoyable and also managed to move us to a table that had become available. I was fascinated by the wonderful decor and the food was delicious. We both had the classic Welsh rarebit, the best I’ve ever tasted, even the salad was very tasty. So looking forward to returning but will book in future.

I've heard rave reviews from family and friend's about the Sugar Plum for quite some time and I'm surprised I've not visited before now. We booked both afternoon tea and the normal menu for a Saturday mother's day treat for my mum, ex wife (I know!) and our youngest to avoid the madding Sunday crowd. The experience was excellent from start to end. We arrived a little early because of light traffic so had a browse around and I noticed a lot of happy diners and little white boxes leaving. We were to find out why later. The food was excellent and plenty of it. The afternoon tea for £20 I can say without doubt is excellent value. One of the best I've experienced and the best value I've had. But the star of the afternoon was our waitress (sorry I've forgotten your name). She was superb. Her interaction with Alexander and Agnes was brilliant as were also the other staff. It was an absolute joy and so lovely to experience. Nothing was any trouble. 5 stars plus plus. As for the little white boxes. There is so much choice you can't eat it all but you can take it home to share. We had a wonderful unhurried afternoon with excellent food and excellent service. Thank you for such a wonderful experience. You are now on the list. We'll be back.

My partner and I occasionally visit Sugar Plum tearoom in Rhewl as a treat. They have a lovely menu and the setting is really lovely, especially on the summer and the outdoor seating is great. The speciality milkshakes are to die for!! I haven't yet indulged in the cakes, but they are homemade and friends tell me they are delicious! On our latest visit we had panini which were very nice. The soup of the day was tomato and basil which smelt fantastic. My partner usually gets the Welsh rarebit which is his favourite. I had a chai latte which was very tasty although a little pricey for the size. Aside from that, always a really enjoyable time and staff are very friendly and accommodating. Pleased to see that youngsters were employed to help.

We have visited this cafe many times over the years and always had great food and service ..however following our visit yesterday for afternoon tea I felt I had to write a review due to the difference In the Quality and quantity of food and the waitress service . What has happened ???!!! We booked a table for 2 pm and we’re quickly shown to our table informing them on our arrival that we had booked for afternoon tea .. now the cafe was admittedly busy and the staff were all buzzing around but we noted that they all seemed very young and inexperienced and appeared apprehensive when approaching the public .. there didn’t seem to be a senior member of the team working who looked as if they were guiding them .. maybe they were all new starters ?? Not great management on a busy weekend !We waited 15 minutes for a waitress to arrive to take our drinks order and then a further 10 for it to arrive bearing in mind it as only tea for four and nothing complicated .. however the food didn’t arrive until 2.50 !!!! By which time we had finished the tea .. we were offered further refreshment and an apology was offered for the delay in the food however the presentation of the afternoon tea lacked finesse and just looked like it had been quickly chucked on the plate .. there was no choice of sandwiches .. it was 4 fingers of egg and cheese and chutney the quiche was squashed under the cheese scone with a few wilted leaves of lettuce thrown on for presentation . The cakes seemed smaller and ‘tired ‘ and consisted of one little round Victoria sponge , one meringue , one triangle of millionaire shortbread and and two scones and cream which considering we were paying £16 a head didn’t seem a lot for two people. Therefore we left the sugar plumb tea room feeling ‘disappointed ‘ on this occasion...were not sure what’s changed but something needs to be addressed to restore this little gem back to its former glory .

Have been here many times before and always been very good service with tasty , delicious food. But today sadly was let down by Very slow service and burnt food. We waited for 45 mins for our food to arrive and when it did the Panini was burnt , too hard to bite into, also in that time we had not received our drinks either, even though we reminded them . By this time we were very hungry and ended up going somewhere else.Hoping this is just a bad day and standards improve again.

After perusing the antique furniture etc. We settled into seats for an early brunch and I'm glad we did! My first time having Welsh rarebit (the Spanish option) was delish! D had the halloumi, A also had the rarebit while G had the black pudding. All were spot on! My Spanish rarebit added chorizo to the recipe, G's black pudding with poached eggs almost induced food-envy! Service was very quick and always with a smile. Thoroughly recommend!

Retro indeed. What a great place to visit, wonderful. Great Menu of food and drinks. Food is scrumptious in particular the array of Cakes available. The Staff are amazing, so personable in being chatty, smiley, attentive from the Management to the School lads n lasses working on their weekends n holidays. Whilst it is a bit pricey, you pay for what you get, quality food, fantastic ambience, fun and welcoming, dwy ieithog too and totally Retro, even down to the furniture, though comfortable may not be the word for the chairs as fun as they are (cushions are provided mind ), maybe something that can be looked at. Overall a great place to experience and one you'll return to for a fun time, chat with all and fulfilling your hunger and thirst. Keeping my loyalty card for more stamps for sure.

We went here for a family afternoon, pre booked. Greeting on arrival, short and rude. When we asked for water, not very forth coming, twenty minutes to be asked for drinks, numerous waitresses attending to tables. When we ordered, no cutlery arrived. My Daughter went up to get sweetener, despite the fact she had asked, 40 minute wait for food and still no cutlery, then no chutney, which was stated to be with the Panini, no apology when waitress took the two meals away. They just placed them on the side and we waited ten minutes for them just to place a tiny pot of chutney to side of plate and when they brought them the cheese and ham had gone cold. We ate as we were in company and hungry. Chips that were ordered also didn’t arrive so my daughter had to ask for them. After recommending to friends, this visit was an embarrassment. Would not travel there again and it ruined our family meal.

Love this place. New menu and some old favourites on there. Cakes to die for. Always a welcome. If you're learning Welsh it's a good place to try it out. Welsh and English are spoken but not by all staff. Only downside are the small school or chapel chairs which are very low but that discomfort is forgotten when you're lost in s cloud of light fluffy sponge, fresh cream, berries and tiny meringue.

This is a lovely little place to come for a paned(cuppa), and a cake, or even a light lunch. I prefer ,on a sunny place to take my dog in to the little garden, superb. The only downside maybe, is that the choice of food for lunch is limited, but tasty.Staff are very good and friendly, always accomadating-will go again!!

Had a meal here this evening with my friend before we went into Theatre for The Drifters Show. I was very disappointed with my Thai Green Chicken Curry. It looked like green slop but I though it might taste ok so I started eating it. Unfortunately most of my chicken pieces were pink or not cooked through so I left most of my meal. I didn't make a fuss as I didn't want to cause any embarrassment to my friend or make a scene as the restaurant was very busy. I certainly won't be ordering that again. Dessert and service was excellent.
