We came across this pub by chance whilst driving on the Snake Pass. Lovely old pub, full of character and the views of the Strine reservoir and surrounding countryside are fantastic. Ideal place to sit in or out. The food was nice too, we had sandwiches and a bowl of chips.

I would normally never leave a review of this type but after my visit today I can do no other. The inn has been a regular stop off for a great lunch on our days out due to the fact that well behaved dogs are welcomed. My dog is a well trained springer spaniel and behaves better than most children but today my dog was attacked and bitten by, we are told, a regulars dog that has attacked before! Now my dog will heal but imagine this was a child, or elderly person. The couple of an older age were sitting to the right of the bar with a husky type dog. Please please please be aware if these people are in. If this dog is known to have aggressive tendencies, as told by the bar/waiting staff, then why the hell is it still allowed in? Is there not a duty of care towards customers from the management?I do look forward to the management response to this review. The food and inn are superb, just a pity about a known aggressive dog being allowed in a family environment.

Our son booked this pub for lunch and it turned out to be a great choice. The weather was iffy so we sat inside which was a little cosy with the proximity of the tables but not oppressively so. There is a good selection of beers and the food was great value and good quality. The butter bean stew in a giant Yorkshire pudding was given the thumbs up by the vegetarians in our party, my wife enjoyed her roast pork and I was very impressed with my mince and mushroom pie. They certainly know how to cook roast potatoes. We may well come again, hopefully after a walk in the Peak District, weather permitting.

I went here on Sunday having had a wonderful walk around Ladybower Reservoir. I'd already stopped at the Ladybower pub, boy do I wish I'd stayed there to eat.Ok, to get the main issue out of the way, I've just endured the most uncomfortable 48 hours without breaking a bone. I'm not exaggerating when I say I've been bitten around my legs and ankles in excess of 100 times. It feels like they're burning and costing me the price of an England Footballer in anti histamines. The bites definitely came from sitting outside the pub - I could feel a couple, but didn't realise how bad it was getting. On the positive side, the beer is good, trouble is, that's what probably deadened my defences around the attack of the mutant midges. The location is really nice, overlooking a beautiful valley and quite peaceful, only broken by the screeching of tyres trying to avoid the peacocks strutting onto the adjacent road - I'm wondering if those birds are the main draw for the midges.....The food. I'm sorry, I can't agree with other reviews. Carrots, broccoli, peas and bean medley, were clearly freshly cooked but completely devoid of taste. I can't believe any chef - even a pub chef - would turn such tasteless food out. I had beef which was Ok. Not fantastic, but by no means not the worst I've had. The yorkshire pudding was Aunt Bessie's frozen (other frozen regional battered products are available). The best thing on the plate was the roast potato. All be it a little crunchy. On the basis of the midges, wild horses wouldn't drag me back to this pub. Not necessarily their fault but with so many other great pubs nearby, why would I?Coupled with the bland food, I'm afraid my only advice is, try elsewhere.

We stumbled on the strines inn on the internet and thought we'd give it a go. It was busy when we got there but still tables to choose from outside. Excellent prices for both food and drinks, food was tasty and all seemed to be cooked fresh. Only downfall was that they had run out of a few things on the menu which we weren't told about until after we had ordered and had to swap. No problem really as there was plenty to choose from. Beautiful location and views. Everything is a bit dated, menus, plates, decor etc but I guess that's in keeping with the old building. Will definitely be returning.

A typical country pub situated in an isolated but great location with spectacular views. The beef was roasted just right with fresh veg cooked just right. Lost one star as it needed to be much hotter - meal was stone cold by the time we'd finished. Decent value though and the Merlot complemented the meal perfectly. This was our second visit and will not be the last.

This pub has log fires, great beer and wonderful views out over the moorlands. The lamb shanks were perfect. The whole time there was relaxed and very laid back. The staff and customers were very welcoming.

We took our students out for a pub supper on Monday, very quiet in the pub so we sat next to the fire. Everyone enjoyed their meals with the highlights being the giant Yorkshire's, (beef and sausage, a complete meal in a crunchy edible dish) the sea bass and the treacle sponge puddings, generous and delicious. Apparently the beer is good, and I only noticed one item of taxidermy, although plenty of copper kettles. We will return in daylight.

After a long enjoyable walk with our dog blue we called in for a drink like we always do to a ignorant local with a spaniel and perhaps your staff should concentrate a bit more on your visitors as well as locals on asking for a bowl of chips your barmaid informed us we only serve chips with meals sat at next table the same nasty local was tucking in to a bowl of chips so you must have to be local to get a bowl of chips an asmile

We called in here for lunch for the second time within a month. We have passed it many times in the summer and it was always very busy so we thought it must be good - and it was! My husband had rib-eye steak and I had macaroni cheese, both served with chips and a side salad. Both were very tasty, although the chips were a bit over cooked for my liking. There is an excellent menu with specials on every day and last time my husband had the steak pie, which he said was one of the best he had had. The staff are very pleasant and efficient and we also enjoyed the lovely log fires! We will definitely go back again.

This is a great little pub in the middle of nowhere. We visited it around lunch time with wind and rain blowing outside. The pub is at an elevation of 1000 ft above sea level, which amplifies any adverse weather conditions. Coming in from the weather was great with log fires and warm lighting. A nice selection of beers and wines to compliment what was a wonderful steak and ale pie. Cooked as a Pie should be cooked. The pie will make us return!

We visited the Strines yesterday with some friends from Worksop who wanted to go for a meal there having drove past many times but had never been in.as soon as we entered i saw the look of dismay on their faces,we went to the bar to order a drink first and was served by bar staff who had the personalities of a pit bull on the wrong day no smiles no welcoming greeting nothing.I ordered a small coke and it came in a straight sided small glass and was over brimming and spilling out, likewise my wifes drink.we found a table to sit at and my friends were looking round and at the ample servings of food being delivered to tables buy waitresses who looked as if they had done a five mile hike over the moors in other words they looked shabby and unprofessional.the friends then went to the toilets and on their return made an observation that the toilets were a disgrace and if they couldnt be bothered with the place most people visit what was the kitchen like so decided not to have a meal there after all.Yes the food looked like you got an ample portion if a little high priced, but i think the place could do with a good clean up.Yes we know its a country pub but over the years I have seen it deteriorate from the previous landlords standards.Woud I go again, not on your life.We went to another pub at High Bradfield and had an excellent meal in clean and efficient surroundings.

We've eaten here a couple of times in the last few weeks and both times the food was lovely. It's a very old inn tucked out of sight, but the views are lovely. It still retains loads of old world charm, and is unspoilt and cosy, which personally I think makes a great change from modernised pubs. The second time we visited it was a miserable murky day so the fire was a very welcome sight. The food is pretty straightforward and unpretentious, but very good. Large portions, freshly cooked, plenty of choice with a few specials in addition to the main menu, service very welcoming. All in all worth it's a trip out here. There are peacocks wandering around outside and we had to dodge a few stray sheep on the way, but once you arrive you could be miles away from civilisation rather than the fifteen minutes it took us to get there. They also do B and B and I'm guessing the breakfasts are hearty, so it might be worth giving it a try. It also means we could sit by the fire and have a few beers without drawing straws for who's driving.

Good food, not over-expensive, not the 'pub-grub' choice that is too frequently found. There is a distinctive choice, friendly staff, nice atmosphere, blazing fire. Well worth a visit, open all day and surrounded by lovely moorland.

Been visiting the Strines inn since 1978. A lovely setting for a country pub. That's where the trouble starts, I believe the current owners have been there for a few years now and I think they just rely on the appeal of the "idyllic" country pub setting. I went last week after a friend told me it had been closed a while ago with the builders in, great I thought, a bit of new decor or even a clean and hopefully a change in the menu. Not a bit of it, same tired pretty dirty decor and the same old menu, which must have remained the same for years. I think the time has come for me to finally admit the Strines in its present state has outlived it's beauty for me.

We headed here on bank holiday for a nice drive out. We expected it to be too busy but although there were a lot of people there we still got seated and only waited 30 minutes for our meal.Although the food was nice it wasn't anything special. The special thing about this place is the place itself. Beautiful building, gorgeous surroundings and a fantastic atmosphere. We'll definitely be back.

We have driven over from Barnsley twice now after finding this great pub. We had the soup for staters and pie after. Both were great! But it's the pie that made us return. Plenty of meat and home made chips. Simply delicious...

A quaint old pub in the middle of nowhere, which is quite lucky because the peacocks in the garden would probably annoy any neighbours. The service was quick and efficient and the home made steak and ale pie was in the all time list of "the top ten of pies I have eaten". In fact one of our party declared it to be the number one in his personal list. However on the negative side it left no room for a sweet.

My husband and I have just returned from a meal out at the Strines Inn and it was not great! We both opted for a burger myself the vegetarian and my husband the cheese burger. They arrived quite quickly but the burger was sat in a cheap breadcake that was neither buttered nor toasted. There was no salad on the burger and so it was very dry and, to be honest, boring. The small amount of chips were soggy and only a small half-hearted side salad accompanied the meal. In conclusion we will probably give the Strines a miss in future as they need to try alot harder.

Set in the middle of nowhere but only 10 minutes drive from Sheffield, this 13th century building is cosy and welcoming, as are the staff (welcoming that is!) The menu has lots to offer, including many vegetarian dishes, and the portions are large, tasty and well-cooked and presented. If it is warm enough to sit outside the views are amazing, and if it is cold the small rooms and real fires ensure warmth and comfort.

Myself and a friend called on our way back to Sheffield from Manchester. Afterwards we wished we had either turned off earlier to the Yorkshire Bridge or just waited until we had got back into Sheff. The location is obviously great, and that will never change, but it seems they're resting on their laurels. It takes no time and costs very little money to add a few chips or a little salad garnish to a meal. I had chilli con carne served in a giant yorkshire pudding. The giant yorkshire was an 'Aunt Bessie' probably from Morrisons at around 0.80p and the small amount of chilli inside (very tasty mind) probably equated to 3 table spoons. That was it ! No chips and no salad. Not only did it look drab, it didn't even fill a small hole. This dish was around £8.90. The place itself is looking very tired and could really do with a good overhall. TAKE MY ADVICE....GO TO THE YORKSHIRE BRIDGE.

I used to love driving out to this pub and enjoying a meal with my other half, family or friends. But in my opinion the food has gone downhill after the last couple of visits. Service still great, real ale and warm fires would still make me pop in for a pint, but wont be dining for a while.

When we first entered the new owner was on to us since he hates us in general but we egnored him and continued it was my sun in laws 21st birthday last week so we met up to give him is gift we ordered an alcoholic drink for him and they asked for id he forgot it but had an Imige on his phone they said they couldn’t accept it so he had a flat drink. But my husband wasn’t having any of it so he ordered him the drink but when we sat back down all the staff was walking past our table and just watching us. Our sun in law decided to have a drink since he is now the legal age but as soon as he did the staff rushed up to us and took it. So they decided to leave (I don’t blame them) my and my husbands friends came laiter that night to see us and the waiters wouldn’t surve our friends alcohol even though they came an hour after the incident but we ordered food (with no drinks!). My husband went up to the bar calmly and asked why they wasn’t serving us or the other family that we was with. They said” it’s our policy”. So since the other family (that wasn’t here when the incident occurred)just asked for there money back since they couldn’t have drinks. So the waiters came up to our table and took all of our food and drinks away while our kids were still eating. They took all of my family’s food even though it was just my friends that got there money back! So I asked for my family’s money back and they tried giving me less money than I payed! Overall it was a dreadful time and the waiters ruined my night definitely do go here never mind eat hear. Hope you all find a better place to eat.

Should I remove a star because I wish it was closer to home? I can’t fault this wonderful pub, from the great outdoor space to the friendly staff. I visited recently for food and was surprised by the vast choice of different dishes to choose from, even as a vegetarian and a very fussy eater. It is not very often I am spoilt for choice. My food came quick, fresh and delicious. The portion size was spot on and the value for money is great! I will definitely be back, it’s worth the journey.
