look as a Glaswegian, I know Indian restaurants. I make no comments on the restaurant itself as we took takeaway. the food is plentiful but very average. As another review has indicated, the sauces seem really sweet and bland. Average at best

We ate here twice during our week stay. To be fair, the first time was a Sunday night, and if you know Stornoway there is very little choice on a Sunday night, but we were very pleased with our choice. The food was lovely, generous portions, and the staff were fantastic, very friendly and helpful with lots of tips for our week ahead. We chose here for our last night too, and were equally as pleased. The food again was lovely and the staff were all too pleased to explain the history of the dish (Parsi wedding food for bride). Yes, the place is a bit old fashioned but it's clean and comfortable

Rice were not properly cooked and I ordered sag PANEER, paneer means Indian cottage cheese and what I got was completely different cheese (cheddar or whatever the chef used), either the chef doesn't know what paneer is or he is fooling around, but the overall taste of the food was alright and so I thought to give 'average' and not 'poor', waiters were hospitable and also guided us in finding nearby pharmacies which was nice of them, another problem I noticed was tables that are kept quite inside in the room are getting ignored as they are completely out of the sight of waiters and so it turns out to be hard for customers and waiters to interact with each other.

Finding somewhere to eat out in Stornoway on a Sunday, or anywhere else on Lewis for that matter, is not easy, and I was surprised that the Balti House wasn't busier. Yes it's musty, and old fashioned and the Michelin star might never happen but if you want to completely relax and enjoy well cooked curries and starters, then this is the place - we ordered for 4 and had drinks for about £100 including tip. Actually, the platter to share was one of the best we have had with great variety - our kids played safe with Korma and Chasni, and we had dansak and bhuta, forgive the spelling. If you feel inclined to be down on this place during the meal then I recommend the cobra beer, after 2 or 3 you will be relatively unable to be negative - the staff are local kids who are keen to please and even when my teenage daughter smashed a glass soaking herself in coke (how we laughed), the young staffers replaced it immediately at no charge in the hope that she would repeat the mistake. You can park for free across the street too - I dare you to go, and unlike the waspish reviews below you might even find you have a great night.

We tried this restaurant last week. I have never quite tasted anything as awful as the food served there. From the spiced onions consisting of raw onions with a sprinkle of herbs (no sauce or anything), to the Tesco naan bread (which was the highlight of the dinner), topped it off by a brick-hard half chicken (which I hadn't ordered) in a tin sauce, the food did not remotely resemble Indian food. A main meal (plus their interpretation of spiced onions) and a soft drink came to nearly £40! Disgraceful!

Service was very slow, drank a pint of larger before we even got the starters, main courses came a while after that. Food wasn't bad but the state of the carpet left a lot to be desired, supposed to be red patterned but it was black, I mean black especially near the bar and toward the kitchen area, not much better in the rest of the place. Shame this restaurant used to be nice. Our starter arrived, the Pakora's were very over cooked and a slight stale smell of a deep fat fryer with oil well overdue to be changed. The meat of the main was chewy. The price which is higher than average is not justified when you look at the quality. Not saying we will never go back because we have good memories of previous meals in the past with a friend sadly no longer with us, but it will be a long time before we do.

The food is good..pakora, nan breads, main course...all fine. However, certainly pricier than most Indian Restaurants....£12, 13, 14 for run of the mill Dansak, Bhunas etc. Rice £3+ on top of that makes it about 50% more than most restaurants. Certainly pushing their luck on that front. £5.50 for a large bottle of Cobra....about £1.50 too much IMO.Dreadfull dingy decor badly in need of attention smacks of a management interested more in profit than customer experience.

Very disappointed, ordered a tandoori chicken with rice Nan bread and curry sauce, the rice was ok, the nan bread was okay the curry sauce was average, the tandoori chicken was rancid, at first I thought someone had cross contaminated the sauce with mint yogurt, but then the saltiness of rancid meat hit my taste buds with that realisation the meat is off, rancid, and the dryness of the bone with over dried tandoori mix almost had me vomiting as I ran to spit the meat out of my mouth, absolutely disgusting, staff are complacent and show an ethos of arrogance, my friends and family and some work colleagues said they wished they had prior knowledge of our visit, as the reputation is poor, once bitten twice shy, had I had more time I would have packed it of ti the environmental health, my advice don't risk it, spent two days nursing stomach cramps which spoilt my visit, this resturaunt and its kitchen staff need to be re run through the fundamentals of food hygiene as they even look like a don't care business, re-heats order of the day, try HS2 excellent food and service. we tried this restaurant in Septembre 2014 while touring the Hebrides. We are regular customers of Indian restaurants so we know what we are talking about. An old man came pushing plates he dried?/dusted? and put in front of us. The waiter asked for our choice of drinks. It was ok for those having soft drinks but I wanted some Lassi ( traditional Indian drink made with milk & yogurt) They hadn't so I asked for some true Indian tea, they had not either, just British breakfast or herbal tea...We then studied the menu. They have made the effort of explaining the names of recipes for new comers, such as " Tikka, Masala, tandoori etc." stating that the dishes underneath could be prepared according to the recipes explained above. When I asked for some lamb prepared with the Masala blend of spices they said they had lamb prepared only as written on the menu. Fair enough. I had Lamb tikka but its taste was unusually sweetish. It was not bad but didn't correspond to what I am used to for this recipe.I advised my friends to have Indian Naan and we chose plain ones and cheese ones. Our dishes were delivered from the trolley again but the Naans were not ours, said the waiter to the old man. So he used his hands to seize the naans and turned them whih both hands in order to check! It put me off for the rest of my meal. The German customers who had never tasted indian food and drank coca cola with their meals said they foundnothing wrong in the taste of their dishes....... but I was so disappointed that a couple of days after our return home we went to our favourite Indian restaurant in Lyon "Le Shalimar"and I could once again enjoy true delicious Indian cuisine in an elegant Indian environment ! So for a genuine Indian cuisine & elegant service I recommend..... "Le shalimar" in Lyon!

I've read the reviews about the decor and the carpet. Fortunately, the efficient staff didn't ask me to eat my meal off the floor. I was happy to eat from the spotless table, and my muddy, sandy boots didn't feel like they were spoiling the pile. Also, for those of you who criticised the "atmosphere", I can confirm there was sufficient nitrogen, oxygen, carbon dioxide and noble gases when my partner and I attended. I suggest if you want a disco/ birthday party/Valentine's extravaganza in full swing at 6pm on a Monday, bring your own. Skip the bhajis and samosas. Enjoy the main dishes, naans and rice. If the staff seem too laid-back...you are from the US, and your ingrained sense of entitlement belongs at home.

I rarely eat out in a Balti House, I find I can cook them better with fresher ingredients myself. The Stornoway Balti just reinforced my opinions. I ordered a special biryani and it arrived with rice and separate sauce! the rice mixture seemed to me to be fried rice with some leftover bits of everything in it, I picked out bits of pre-cooked chicken and lamb in this matrix of oily rice and felt I had to add the sauce to make it taste of something.I was there early evening and staff were uninterested. Coming from Glasgow we are big curry lovers. This is good not great and a bit different from main stream curry houses. The restuarant is pleasent enough inside with great service. We had popadoms with great sauce selection then the mixed vegetable platter to start-samosas , vegetable pakora and onion bhajis-all a bit greasy.Next a lamb laal and a vegetable Dulhaniya bhuna. My bhuna was more a gravy sauce and very mild for me, hubby enjoyed his laal. We had this with a cobra beer , a special egg fried rice which was more Chinese ish and a garlic nan which didn't have enough garlic. I popped in one evening and found it quite charming .I liked the Decor and the subtle Indian raja that put you in mind of Kipling and a million Spices.I think it may be offensive to the staff to arrive listening to music as i still had my ear pieces in but i quickly removed them .I still found the waiters a little non plussed at me being on my own .Anyway...the food was superb and i enjoyed every minute of my meal .The dipping sauces were particularly nice and one i hadn't tasted before which was Yoghurty and Sweet .This won the Chef more bragg - points in my book .Enjoyable and satisfying.

The staff are friendly, possibly from loneliness. The local population tends to eat early which explains why so many places take last orders at nine. The food was appetising if a little unimaginative with a good choice of dishes at a reasonable price. The decor is dire but on a cold wet winter night, it is as good a place to be as any for fast, inexpensive food.

Having been unable to get reservations at another restaurant we ended up at Stornoway Baltimore House, but we were not disappointed. The staff were nice and efficient and the food was very good. We enjoyed the friendly nature of the staff. Worth a visit.

On my way to tonight's B&B, I realised I needed a quick meal, and I stopped in here. 40 minutes later, I was out and off after a rather good meal. Chicken Tikka, followed by Lamb Kashmiri. Excellent food at a fair price. Place was empty apart from me, but it was early evening.I often wonder how we end up with Balti Restaurants in these remote corners of the UK. Whatever the reason, I'm grateful. NB : 20 years ago, I was regaled by a chum claiming that he drove off the ferry to be met by "Rajiv McTavish's Curry House", the apparent home of the Tandoori Black Pudding. He may have been lying, but this harbour-facing Balti is an excellent alternative.

I didn't t have high expectation of this meal, however last night on Lewis with no one in the mood to cook thought we'd have a curry. And wow, what a revelation - my king prawn bhuna was excellent, as was my travelling companions jalfrezi and rogan. Staff were really friendly and hospitable, and will be straight there on my return visit next year.

I love curry and like to try different dishes where ever I go. Although most of the meals I had tried before, I did manage to find a new meal which did not disappoint. The food and service were excellent. The prices reasonable and ambience great.

We stayed in Stornoway while touring Harris and Lewis and decided to eat at the Stornoway Balti. The restaurant is nice and located on the seafront. The staff were helpful and the food was very good with an extensive menu. Personally, this restaurant offers better Indian food than many in Welsh and English towns and cities. If you are in the Stornoway area, it's worth a visit for a quality Indian meal.

My wife and I had a lovely meal here last night...the service was prompt, attentive and freindly...The food itself arrived piping hot and very tasty....the Lamb Tikka is to die for....very succelent and juicy,,,,,upon asking the waiter , i was informed the Lamb is locally sourced on the island....I am telling you 100% , try the Lamb Tikka, you will be surprised!!!My wife had a Kurfan Special with mushroom fried rice......the taste was nice with a hint of sweet aromatic flavours...she said it was the best mild/medium dish she had tasted....Overall i would say its good value for money as our trip around the town we noticed other places with much higher prices!!! They have a early dinner menu under £16 per person.....so were going back before we finish our holiday!

The food is certainly good enough, at least from our one meal here. When it came time to pay, I had an unpleasant surprise: neither my American credit card or debit card would be acceptable forms of payment. Apparently most UK payment cards now have an embedded chip that can be used to charge the card, ain addition to the usual magnetic stripe. This restaurant was equipped only to accept chipped cards, but did not have a magnetic card reader. I even asked if they could charge the card manually by writing a slip and calling the charge to the credit company, the way one can do in the US, but they said that this would not be possible. There was also no notice posted that advised customers of the limitation in credit card payment options.Every other establishment during our stay was able to accept our unchipped cards, but not this one. It was an upsetting end to a good dinner. Luckily we were able to go to a nearby ATM and get cash to pay for the meal, but it was an inconvenience to say the least.

Tasty Indian food in friendly atmosphere. Not having reserved a table for one of the busiest evenings of the year during the HebCelt weekend, we found ourselves walking into this little Stornoway Indian right by the harbour. Although they were very busy and obviously working under high pressure, the service was ever so friendly and the food well-cooked. On our search for somewhere to eat, other places were recommended to us and so ended up popping our heads in at various other places. Can't say that the atmosphere in those in any way stood out. Out of the places we saw this place proved a great option to the obviously nice-looking places.

We didn't expect much - our prejudices (and past experience) tell us that Indian restaurants outside the big cities are often not very good. But what a pleasant surprise! Really nice friendly service (despite us being rather wet and having piles of soggy cycling gear with us) and pretty decent food. We would certainly go back again.

We ate here one night during a day trip from Harris. The restaurant does a good trade in carry outs which is usually a good sign and this proved to be true.We received very good service and the food was very tasty and well cooked. Also we found the prices to be reasonable.A good Indian restaurant well worth a visit.

I experienced a meal at this place on two occasions and both were nothing to write home about and a little expensive to say the least as I had a Chicken Tikka Balti with 2 Chapati's and no rice and a small glass of coke and it came to £15 and on the second occasion I was with a colleague and we had 3 Poppadoms with two dishes of chutney and mixed onions and a Chicken Korma with Rice and a Plain Nan and I had Chicken Tikka Balti again with 2 Chapati's and no rice and we had 3 small cokes between us and the bill was just over £43 and I worked out that this would have cost around £20 at home so they are a wee bit pricey

My wife and I had a good meal from here.I had Khans chicken tikka Balti and my wife had a veg kurfan.Good portions and very tasty. Actually much better than the eat in meal I had here a couple of years before which quite frankly was not very good,. Maybe they have improved since then.Prices are obviously a little higher than on the mainland considering lack of competition but still ok.

Nice eatery at the end of the road --- literally! We were in the Road End Cottage across the way - so had to eat here upon arrival on a Saturday night. Good service - nice food. lovely view of harbour and when it gets dark the fairy lights are a nice touch.

Really first class service! The hotel was able to accommodate me despite only phoning them up at 9pm on the night due to my camping trip being disrupted by stormy weather. Amazingly helpful and attentive staff, a lovely room, and an excellent cooked breakfast - absolute life savers!

Cannot review the food as we did not get any, pretty looking place, sunny day, sat at table outside, waiter gave us some menus, said it was table service and that he would return in 5 minutes to take our order......nothing for 15 minutes, popped my head in to ask about ordering, to be told kitechen was closed and no food available, I explained we had been waiting for 15 mins.....Party of 4 French visitors who seated a minute after us were also told the same after waithing 15 mins.......we all left..... Kiosk up the hill was very friendly and good food!!!!!
