A friend and I were looking for somewhere for a salad and a glass of wine somewhere around Tottenham Court Road station, and wandered into Stephen Street quite by accident, and discovered this delightful restaurant. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, it wasn't overly busy, we got a nice quiet table for two and instantly loved the place. The service was excellent and very friendly, the quinoa avocado and broccoli salad was delicious, as was the glass of Picpoul de Pinet. A good fine in a quiet street away from the bustle of Oxford Street.

ordinary - coffee was pretty good but requests like ‘toast well done please’ or ‘’may I have Jan with my toast’ resulted in pale toast and non-existent jam: ‘we don’t have it’. One waitress to serve the entire cafe which meant we were not served unless our order was being taken or our food delivered. No-one asked if we’d like anything else and v hard to get someone’s attention to order another coffee

Having walked past this place a few times... it didn’t scream out friendly bar.. open for business. If anything it had more of a hotel bar feel... fine if your staying.. but not somewhere I’d go for a casual drink. But I couldn’t have been more wrong... After visiting with work colleagues.. this has become one of our goto meeting places.. Very friendly staff.. and a chilled atmosphere.. They do have just one draft beer.. but everyone seems to like it.. It’s got large tables.. great for groups.. and they don’t have overly loud music.. so it’s great to go there with colleagues or friends.. Well recommended.

While the food is perfectly ok, the service is consistently abysmal. My colleagues and i use the venue due to its ideal location, within easy reach of the office. The lunch and breakfast options are good and usually pretty good However, the service is truly, truly terrible. Staff run around like headless chickens, not seeming to know which way is up. Orders get forgotten, requests for the bill go ignored and dishes take an age to arrive, even when the restaurant is dead. They desperately need to improve this place!!

In the heart of Media Land, off Tottenham Court Road, lies Stephen Street. This short road houses some of the top UK TV companies, so it's a no-brainer that a restaurant would be located here, directly opposite Freemantle. It's clientele, many glued to their laptops at their tables, are mostly, but not exclusively, in the industry. Logic dictates that the restaurant would be slick, efficient and know just how to cater for its clientele. But it doesn't. The service was quite simply dreadful. Everything, from the menu, to drinks, to the bill, had to be asked for at least twice. The food, when it finally arrived, was not bad. The waitress, although smiling and friendly, didn't seem to have the first idea what she was doing. Remember, this is a large, beautifully-designed restaurant in Central London - it is not the place for amateur hour. The outdoor area at the back looked very inviting, the decor was London-modern, the seating very comfortable - in fact all the ingredients were there for what should have been a good dining experience. But the poor service let it down badly.

My first impression was that it was very noisy! The service though was excellent and the prices very reasonable. The menu is very limited with only 4 deserts one of which was a choice of 4 ice cream flavours and one not available. The salad dish consisted mainly of lettuce and the monk fish cheeks were very chewy. My lamb flatbread (a pizza) was excellent and very filling. Must mention the toilets which were unisex cubicles but very pleasant and clean. There's an outside eating area which would be good in the summer. Not fine dining but not bad at all.

It was probably our fault that we chose this restaurant to meet with friends for chat and catch-ups as we hadn't reckoned on the noise, not only from the clientele but also from the overly loud music which was being pumped out unnecessarily. We were seated at one of those terribly uncomfortable sofas where the seating is too low and the tables too high. We had been advised that we had only two hours to eat up (hate that) and certainly the waiters made sure that we got off to a quick start by constantly asking us if we were ready to order. A real pity because the food is not bad. We chose to share a number of small plates and were impressed by the quality of the selection, particularly the salads and the chicken thighs. Wine is reasonably priced and the overall bill not alarming.

We had a lovely evening last night at the Stephen St Kitchen in the BFI building. The ambience around the bar was great and the cocktails tasty. The pre-theatre menu is good value but we chose from the main menu as we wanted their flatbreads. One with hummus, lamb, mint, jalapeños, pomegranate and yoghurt was delicious, and the salami, tomato and olive one was too. Skin on fries were crunchy and the whole meal served well by an friendly waiter. Looking forward to our next visit.

Just off Tottenham Ct Rd on Stephen Street - attached to the BFI - is Stephen St Kitchen. Modern bistrot, elegantly done with a standout bar from the canny Benugo guys. They make the best margarita this side of Charlotte St Hotel. And the menu boasts a small but inventive range of bar snacks and mains. The standout dishes from the sharing plates are the amazing chorizos served on a bed of peppers and the chicken thighs crisped to perfection. Mega-busy on a Friday night with film types from BFI and media types from the ad agency and TV companies over the road - but great fun nevertheless. And in summer they have a great outside terrace at the back planted with olive trees. A great place well worth a detour.

The service was extremely slow - we waited 10 minutes for someone to take our coffee order, and they didn't return for another 10 for our food order. The food, when it did come, was nothing great, and the portions were very small. We watched one of our breakfasts sit on the "heater table" for 10 minutes waiting for the other one. Came here after a trip to the theatre and had a set menu. I found that the menu was limited, especially by not having a vegetarian option for a main course. While I'm not vegetarian it still interested me. When I asked what was in the salad the waiter said "bacon, avocado and pecans" so still no veggie option? I assume they can take the bacon out. What a filling dinner option. Service was slow and not very consistent. Food was under-seasoned across three different dishes. Putting chilli flakes on something doesn't compensate for bland food. Wouldn't go back.

Just off Tottenham Court Road this bar and restaurant is on the ground floor of the BFI building. We were there for dinner, on a Tuesday night. It was pretty busy but service was ok. The menu is Europe-meets-Middle East (so flatbread not pizzas, lots of hummous). The small sharing plates are quite small so.order a couple more than you think you need. We had four plus a flatbread between three and that was fine. Flourless choc cake was delicious. You can.just have a drink and if you wanted to be without any music you can take your drink to the foyer. Also seemed to be an outside area but it was dark and January so I can say no more on that. Beware the bottled beers listed - they seem to come in cans!

Stephen Street Kitchen is essentially the BFI Library canteen, refurbished and open to everyone (though, to declare an interest, I am a BFI Member). When first opened it fashioned itself as an upmarket pizza joint but the menu has since been revisited and is now more in mainstream wine bar territory.I prefer the place as a lunch stop and at lunch the other diners frequently include young, arty types with a BFI connection and the vibe is very good. The room is part of the open plan ground floor of the BFI at Stephen Street and so it isn't intimate and perhaps not the greatest spot on a gloomy, cold day!The food is great, with a Mediterranean theme and bistro style presentation. The drinks selection is good and service is fine and friendly.

Whilst the location and outdoor terrace is enticing - the prices are really off putting! Not good value for money....A 125ml of Rose wine was £5. When I suggested this was a very small glass for £5, I was advised that some customers pay for 2, to get a 250ml glass - making it £10 for one glass of very average wine! Eek - even for London, this is extreme for a casual bar and pizza place. The fish cakes I ordered were disappointing. You'd almost need a magnifying glass to actually find any fish, and they were presented as deep fried balls.I must say that the staff were friendly and we didn't wait too long, but by no means did this make up for the expense of very average food and wine.

So, the positives...food was reasonable for a tastecard 2for1 deal. We had two flatbread type pizzas which were tasty. And the restaurant was clean and fairly cool with a nice evening breeze. The negatives...the service was sooooo slow even though the place was fairly quiet with four waitresses on duty. And I was told that the beer was unlimited until 7pm but when I got the bill and pointed out the extra beers on the bill, I was told that happy hour was only 35% off so they dont train their staff very well. Hence, even though the food was ok, we won't be going back because they don't have the staff.

Had the most delightful lunch on the terrace at the restaurant, the food could not have been better, even had the Bett additional offers they had (excuse the upsell) My only reason for the 4 stars is that I felt a little let down by the drinks cost, the food was exquisite and fantastic value, but the small wine serving at high end prices left me feeling a little hard done by, however I did not let it ruin the afternoon.Well worth a visit, but be better than me at checking the sizes and costs of the wine offer.

Stephen Street have made a poor decision changing their menu. The portion sizes (for the price you pay) are minuscule and they've taken off some great dishes and replaced them with bizarre 'tapas' style dishes that just don't work. Now for £10.50 you can get half a pizza, for £7.50 you can get 6 balls of gnocchi and for £12.50 you can get a bowl of lettuce with some bacon shavings in.Service was shoddy as well, despite booking well in advance they had not set up for our table. Wasn't sure what to expect from a first time eating at Stephen St, on this particular Thursday evening. Because the place is a little hidden away I was worried it might be dead, but in fact it was full and with a 50th birthday table nearby.

Apparently they have "Bubbly Thursdays" (though it's not advertised - our waitress told us after we'd ordered fizz!) so a good percentage off champagne. I'd have thought there'd be more of a film theme to the cocktails, given the location, but it was just a slight nod in only a couple of the names. I was there with an overseas filmmaker and it was a good place to take them to say they'd been.

The menu's pretty small, which I'd normally take as a good sign. We shared calamari for starter. My friend wanted fish and chips for the British experience never having had it before. I went for fish pie (very unusual choice for me) and the waitress recommended broccoli on the side, which I was happy to take.

The calarmari was good but very unusual, in that it was big chunks of fried squid in batter and pretty much exactly like how I'd expect fish and chips to appear. There were no tentacles, just the body of the squid, and three big pieces so it was tough to share.

The broccoli was unexpectedly swamped by garlic, and a touch overdone for me. Can you go wrong with a fish pie? It was well done - a good mix of flavours. I'd have loved to try my friend fish and chips, most of which she left, but we're not regular eating pals so I couldn't dive in. They didn't provide any vinegar, let alone ketchup or mayo. I told her to ask for it, but I think she was too timid being in a foreign environment.

For two of us it was just under 50 quid total, which I do think is excellent value, though now I think about it that's with my 10% BFI member discount! But still good value. And a nice little chat with a Swedish actress waitress afterwards about Alicia Wikander's recent Oscar.

I normally have a good experience at this restaurant, however on this occasion the service was slow, this maybe because they only had two people serving at a busy lunch time 1pm. The chips was burnt and looked like sticks and clearly ready made oven chips. Waited 20 minutes to order a desert...in the end we gave up and was now ready to pay our bill...waited another 10 minutes and the waving of hand or trying to catch their attention was impossible...in the end got up and waited at the till to get my bill as well as pay.

What let it down for me was the poor Caesar salad - never have I seen such a sad plate of food, nor did I ever think a salad could ever create such terrible memories!!The chicken looked like it has been scrapped off an EAT baguette, there wasn't even a hint of anchovies in there, even the croutons could have come pre-done, from the nearest supermarket! Salad cream was quite certainly shop bought - quite frustrating to see the chefs at work in their open plan kitchen, to give such a sad piece of food! All in all a disappointment (especially when you consider using the rest for business meals), but will try again to ensure I didn't go on an "off" day!

If you are located in this busy corner of the metropolis then Stephen Street is a little lost haven of tranquility. There are tables outside at the front. Proper suntrap at certain times of the day. A terrace at the back overlooking the mews. Internally, it has both booth style and single tables. It is also part of the BFI building so there are any number of industry folk visiting at any one time. In the main the food is good as is the service. However, there seems to be a high turnover of staff, therefore, quality of service varies. They open for breakfast from 09:00, through to dinner in the evening. Certainly worth considering.

Met a friend for lunch on Saturday and as always great to be somewhere so close to the shopping area of Oxford Street but off the beaten path and very quiet. Food good, service good and great place as it's quiet and easy to catch up with friends. Only gripe is I booked through Open Table and had to remind the staff to take off the discount - do check the discount as on Open Table it mentioned 50% discount but the actual discount only 35%, otherwise all good.

Just two minutes away from the hustle and bustle of Totthenham Court Road tube is this delightful haven which has indoor and outdoor seating.A perfect meeting place for a quiet meal or just a glass of wine after work. They have thought of everything regarding their layout. The service was excellent. Well done to waiting staff and your kitchen team. We will definitely be returning

Food was good and very good value. Service a bit slow and the staff a bit confused. The place itself is quite nice but nothing special.

Great for a cheap two course meal.

If you are looking for a place to eat quickly from a limited menu (quality pizza-heavy) slap bang in the West End, this place is ideal. Why is it set up like this? Because it's actually attached to the BFI, that's why. Nice outdoor tables, too. Staff are friendly if rather under-trained.

A beautiful trendy bistro with a great vibe. The discount made it fantastic value. My friend had the pasta which had WAY too much liquid (basically a soup) so she didn't enjoy the food much, but I had an amazing pizza which was absolutely spot on!

We were a group of 6 including a 1-year-old child, we had early dinner, Stephen's street kitchen worked really well. The food was great, the outside area was quiet and pleasant and the staff were very accommodating.

I'm a regular at Stephen Street as it's in a really convenient location and the food is consistently good. Love the decor the most - they've nailed the interior design.

That said, EVERY time I have been here (which is 6/7 times now), the service has been Fawlty Towers level of slapstick. I'm a very patient diner, but have been with differnt friends, colleagues and my boyfriend who have all been annoyed at the service and I have to say, I've finally cracked too. Whether it's table reservations that don't get recorded, orders being sent twice, orders being sent wrong (this has happened every time), drinks never arriving, staff not understanding what I mean when I ask for the drinks menu, staff dissapearing when you need the bill... they are in desparate need of training. Staff are confused, disorganised and innattentive. Please sort it out!

Portions quite big and not pretending, but spaghetti alla vongole was too insipid.. Pizza dough was really thin which I like, but it would have been much better if less crispy. Nice and cozy atmosphere and acommodating staffs. Fresh orange juice was good.

I would recommend this restaurant for lunch, dinner, afternoon coffee or cocktail.. anything. I have been few times and the service is always very friendly & attentive. The food is good and the china and glassware are original, very tastful but not over the top.

It's really a pizza place with some additional dishes but it's generally well done and handily tucked away next to the BFI off Tottenham Court Road. Look out for lunchtime deals which improve value. But the service was a bit random, it must be said

We went to Stephen St Kitchen as the place looks beautiful in the pictures. The service was fantastic, very friendly staff, they were attentive, watching to see if we were ready for the next course. The unfortunate let down was the food. I ordered the soup which tasted like boiled water with pesto mixed into it. We both had pork belly for main, which hadn't been cooked enough and tasted of fat on dry meat. Hauntingly bad. The side salad was a bit of apple with some vinegar on top, not very pleasant. I had to write this as reading the reviews, we were so surprised to find the food such a let down. We won't be returning for food but perhaps a casual drink.

Food is okish. Sat in the beer garden on a sunny day and loved it. Food is ok, we went for pizzas. Have had better pizzas at many places nearby. They have a lot of seating space and the place was 70% full even on a Tuesday (lunchtime).

We visited St Stephen Street for the first time with a Voucher deal for Lunch on a Saturday. It's very central in London (just off Tottenham Court Road) but quite off the beaten track for any passing trade / customers. The staff were friendly and the restaurant itself was very trendy. The chefs could cook on an open fire oven if required. Quite a limited menu - especially starters - but overall food was good but nothing special.

We had never been to this restaurant before and thought it most attractive. Had it been a little warmer we could have sat on the terrace where people were enjoying drinks. The glass wall through which you can see into the lobby of the British Film Institute added another layer of interest.

All our food was excellent. Our son who was with us is Vegetarian so my only suggestion is that there should be more choice for Vegetarians. He had to have Pizza as the Pasta dish included Anchovies.

Our Waiter who is from Nepal was very attentive and helpful. He was able to give us up to date information of the situation as his family are there. We are very interested in Tea and we questioned him about the Tea crops. He was most informative.

To sum up it was a very pleasant experience and we would certainly go there again.

Although the decor at the Stephen Street Kitchen may look a bit industrial, the ambience still manages to be friendly and relaxed - somehow they've managed to avoid the awful problems with acoustics that many similarly-kitted-out venues seem to have. My dinner partner and I had no problems conversing in normal tones.
The food was imaginative and delicious and there is an excellent cocktail menu. One thing I found disappointing; they serve a variety of interesting gins but do so with cheap, nasty Schwepps tonic which ruins the flavour.
Our waiter was brilliant - very chatty and friendly without being intrusive or obsequious. Would definitely return.

Following a lecture at the AA, we certainly enjoyed ourselves yesterday at Stephen St.: A comfortable and pretty pear-green banquette for our party of 4, stonework interior walls, pretty serving crockery for some dishes, music at a low volume, and respectful fellow diners (we sat adjacent to a birthday party 6-top). Phew! The feel of the restaurant reminded me of some other place--maybe Brasserie in Midtown NYC. Meals looked and tasted great: pork belly, salmon cakes espec. The pear tart was very good and the chocolate ice cream had inclusions of wee chocolate chips that took it up a notch. Yum! Our main server (younger gent with excellent Elvis Costello-issued gap btwn front teeth) was a total doll, helpful, not showboating, very thorough. The other staff were clearly proud of their work. Thanks for a very pleasant evening!

I went to Stephen street bar & kitchen with a friend after work last week and absolutely loved it! It had a really good atmosphere and a nice decor. Its a big space so it feels refreshing not being cramped. We had a few cocktails and after I had a steak and my friend had sea bass. Both were very good and resonably priced I thought. I felt the service was also very good and attentive. I will definitely be going back!

Saw some good recommendations for the restaurant and it was worth a visit - particularly with the food discount (although we had to remind them at the end as it wasn't initially taken off the bill). Very relaxed, spacious, attractive room with tables well spaced - nice and relaxing on a hectic Friday evening.

Food was nice with a good choice of things you felt like eating. Service was a little inexperienced but OK - although note to waiter, if you tip wine on the table you should top up the carafe! Would go back as the location is good and it's very pleasant.

I was quite impressed by the retro interior with banquettes as far as the eye could see. The restaurant was empty so I asked to be moved to a banquette. Seated by 5.45 we waited 20 minutes in which time several waiters passed us by before our order was taken. I suspect 5.30pm might be too early for the many sleepy staff not focused on us. Strange when there were more service and kitchen staff than customers.
We mentioned we were in a rush whilst ordering and almost inexplicably the food arrived about 5 minutes later. We suspected the pizza had been cooked earlier since we did not see any movement around the glorious wood burning oven.
I had the Vongole which was splendid if a little on the warm side. My dining partner had a warm spicy salami pizza not convinced it was recently from the wood burning oven. It a 6/10 - "ok". I was a little peckish after the measured pasta portion and so ordered a Bruschetta to follow – fast and impossible to go wrong in an “Italian restaurant”. It arrived cold looking rather on the charcoaled side and indeed it was definitely burnt (also according to my dining partner). I've never had burnt bread anywhere in my life so that was indeed a first.
The nice maître de attempted to resolve things (I suspect when he realised an online review was to follow) by removing the service which we didn't ask for but when we pointed out we had come on the 35% discount offer it returned.
This place definitely smacked of a training venue or some type. Verging on chaos. It is a beautiful looking place if you love retro and could do much better given the super experience one is afforded at other Benugo eateries.
If you want to go there, I would say look at pictures on the internet or press your nose against the voluminous plate glass window, admire the interior and then take your stomach and wallet to many of the nearby restaurants or cafes for decent consistent food and service. Interior design maketh a café/ restaurant not. Could do way better.

Had a very nice stay this October. All staff was nice and helpfull, even borrowing me an umbrella. You can hear some trains, but not loud enough to disturb your sleep if you are tired after all day sightseeing London. Close to Euston station so perfect of you visiting Warner Bros Studios
