I visited here for the first time this week for lunch and is was absolutely wonderful. We had a warm welcome and the food was delicious. There were plenty of veggie options and the prices were really reasonable. Will definitely be back soon and will be spreading the word around my office of this place. Thank you!

Was in Cardiff for the weekend of the pink concert and we wanted a healthy nutritious lunch and I came across steen the chef it was a short walk from the hotel.A lot of the produce he grows himself we let him choose what to put in and it didn’t disappoint a very satisfying workers lunch delicious. We were there on a Friday and were disappointed that it does not open on Saturday as we would of loved to try some of the other delicious items of the menu we will be back to Cardiff and will certainly be back at Steen the chef

Have been to Steen the Chef several times over the last few months and the food and atmosphere is always top notch. Good home style cooked food, good choice for mains, snacks and brownies & flapjacks. Great coffee too. The menu changes which is great also. Very reasonably priced. Much better than all the chain type places in Cardiff City centre. The staff are always very friendly and obliging, keep it up guys! A little gem of a place in the city centre.

Hung out chatting to the quirky gents running a kitchen of fabulously fresh home cooked food with ingredients from Steens allotment, sitting at his up cycled furniture, watching the calming fishies. Soup which was just cooked up as I arrived was delicious, comforting and light. I lingered a while in the friendly and trendy in a simple and elegant way, feeling too comfortable to rush away too soon. Definitely a new frequent visit required on my books and will highly recommend it to others as a decently priced fresh and central spot for meets or solo hang outs.

I met a friend at Steen's for lunch midweek and it was perfect for a quick bite to eat. We both had the fishcake which was very fresh, tasty and, happily for us, huge! It came with a side salad and edible flowers. It's a simple cafe, no fuss, and set in part of an old church I believe. Well worth a visit for a casual lunch with tasty food.

We went to Steen the Chef for a dinner based on TripAdvisor recommendation and found this small place with simple interior/tables and a welcoming host. The menu was short and not too complicated which was nice. They offered Fish Friday specials and explained how to combine and order dishes. The food was simple and glorious. Bring your own wine and enjoy their delicious simple meals!

Went here for fish Fridays. Amazing food - cheap price tag. We got all seven fish tapas for £7 per person (four of us in total). The staff were extra friendly, and you could see how passionate Steen himself is about cooking. I hope to visit here more in future - this isn't just a lunchtime spot!

Best food I’ve had in a while! The staff and chef are so friendly and chef is really funny also. Highly recommend to try out. I’ll be going back regularly!

My partner and I went here recently for lunch. He is gluten intolerant and said it was the best meal he has eaten in months. There were plenty of options for him and he was taken through them all. He went for the vegan burger and was very pleased with his choice. I had the fishcake and salad, it was delicious! Lovely atmosphere, friendly staff and good honest food that was freshly made. Don't know what more you could want!

Not too many pleasant old(ish) streets in Cardiff centre but Steen's location is great in Windsor Place. I never eat in chain cafes/coffee shops so it is a pleasure to support Steen's independent cafe. Usually I'm a once a week visitor at lunchtime with my son. Sandwiches excellent, coffee good. I usually cook veggie at home in the evenings but I must try his "proper" meals too. Menu looks quirky but in a good, interesting way. Congratulations on all the rave Trip Advisor reviews. Prices very reasonable. Keep up the good work. Seats outside too.

Steen came and did his thing at a local food festival I organized. The bloke has a serious gift for food and for people. Our estate isn't the easiest for "outsiders" but Steen was a massive hit! He engaged loads of people throughout the day, giving them chances to cook. He had a brilliant set up with cooking stations under a gazebo. He even brought fresh ingredients from his allotment. His food was so good people couldn't get enough.

Spotted this cafe en route to my usual breakfast stop. What a hidden gem I have found. Superb breakfast with herbs from their own allotment and the best coffee I’ve tasted in a long while. Love the work this chef is doing with vulnerable people too. Recommend you try it and find out for yourself!

My wife always says you should never walk into a cafe which is empty so I was a little apprehensive as the only customer in Steens for breakfast at 9am. Alarm bells then ringing when I was told by "Steen" that he needed to pop out to pick up some bread for my order! Didn't need to worry though. Excellent plate of avocado, spinach and eggs on toast arrived soon after the bread run was completed. All cooked to order, very tasty and well presented. Ian Dury was playing in the background. First time I had heard "reasons to be cheerful" for ages, but you can add Steens as part/reason four to Mr Dury's lyrics. Very hospitable patron and great to see an independent cafe with excellent feedback.

Found myself on a limb for Sunday Lunch having tried to book two well known local pubs but left it too late. Then Steen’s notice came up on my Facebook news feed. Give it a try I thought and was so glad the pubs were too busy! Absolutely delicious Traditional Sunday Lunch but nothing from a “nonsense packet” - as Steen puts it. Mackerel starter, beef main and apple filo dessert. All delicious and very reasonable. Discounts for OAPs as well. Be aware this is called a ‘pop up’ so don’t expect a massive wine choice for example. Do expect a friendly welcome and good ‘old school’ food. I’ve eaten in many Cardiff restaurants and it’s quite rare to stumble across a ‘hidden gem’. This is one!

I popped in to grab a quick sarnie and Steen suggested a roast beef buttie with horseradish....it took him two minutes to fry onion an heat the beef up and it was gorgeous, absolutely gorgeous on thick white bread with lambs lettuce, some roasted toms, the beef and horseradish. Totally full now! Worth every penny (and it was cheaper than a packet sarnie from a supermarket!). Thank you Steen.

We stumbled upon Steen the chef a week ago for lunch and it was so good we just had to come back! This time was for Mother’s Day. Steen and his partner were super friendly and couldn’t go far enough to make our visit perfect. One of our party members is a coeliac and they went out their way to make sure everything she ordered was gluten free. We all had the lamb or beef Sunday roasts (gluten free gravy too). They were cooked to perfection. The portions were huge but still amazing quality.

We first ate at Steen's Popup in Bristol a couple of years ago and were impressed enough to follow him to his new Cardiff restaurant. There's always a good atmosphere and the chef gives a great welcome... but none of this would matter unless the food was of top quality - which it is. We've been back 3 times already and will eat there again soon.

My hubby and I stumbled across this place in a recent short break to Cardiff. We only wanted a light bite as we were eating out later for my Birthday Dinner. I ordered a Ham and Mustard sandwich, whilst my Husband selected Mushroom Stroganoff. Both dishes were absolutely delicious and well presented. This is a real gem of a place which deserves every success. I only wish something like this had existed in my home town when I was growing up......! It's so important to bring children up to appreciate and understand where their food comes from and NOT from a box or a packet every day. Prices here are extremely reasonable for good quality tasty food.....Give it a try you will not be disappointed.

We are the Welsh Centre for International Affairs and we ran a tender for buffet catering as we host meetings, conferences and dinners for 3rd sector organisations. Steen was selected because his produce is freshly prepared by him and his team. It is always delicious and colourful, no deep fried 'golden food' as Steen calls it and no sliced-white bread sandwiches unless we specifically ask for them!

Steen's cafe is friendly and small but perfectly formed, and quietly turns out some of the best food money can buy in the city centre. All freshly cooked and lovingly prepared by Steen himself, who also a penchant for great funk music. I recommend his chips, risottos and fishcakes in particular.

Steen the Chef's cafe provides something different to all the well known brands on the high street. Home cooked food daily, at very fair prices. Includes a workers lunch and a range of tapas. It's fresh and fun without frills. Steen himself is a riot and brings an extra dimension of life and passion to the cafe. The menu choice is small - including good vegetarian options - but you know it's freshly cooked and done with care. I knew nothing about the cafe before I went but having had a great meal and a laugh there, I recommend trying it out.
