We visited this evening with friends. The Star Hotel is lovely. We got a friendly welcome and has a relaxed atmosphere. We had 3 course dinner and got to say we were not disappointed. The food was delicious and very reasonably priced. We had a fantastic evening and look forward to returning!

The Star is a fab place to have a local, having a 7 year old means it’s more for food we visit (sadly 😂) but always friendly & efficient staff, nothings ever too much hassle. The food is home cooked great pub food. We’re in regularly but on the last visit had Popseye steak which is great value, with homemade onion rings! Fantastic! Service was fab, young waitress plus the lovely Carrie. Thank you guys!

We, and our dogs, had a very warm welcome from all the staff at The Star. The bar had a nice relaxed atmosphere and the macaroni cheese and side salad were delicious. We will definitely go there again next time we are in the area.

Good quality pub food. Great choice of dishes for adults and kids. Great service and nice environment. None of us got one but a couple on the table next to us ordered one and the steaks looked fantastic. The homemade deserts were a really nice way to finish a good meal. We will definitely return.

Having tried various places en route home to England from the ferry and finding nowhere suitable or even open on a Friday evening we found this little gem of a pub in Twynholm. Lovely service and the pub was surprisingly quiet. Reduced scale portions were on offer which was a nice touch for those who are not overly hungry.

During a time which has not been easy for the hospitality industry, being able to treat yourself to an occasional take-away is something to look forward to and The Star never fails to deliver on quality & service. We have had a few takeaways now & they have never let us down - the food is fresh, great quality & they offer a very friendly service - would definitely recommend.

I love their fish and chips. For GF and DF me it's a real treat. Great pub food which I can eat without worry. And their GF and DF sponge puddings are amazing. Well worth travelling to and staying overnight for the treat :) They served food till 6pm but also do takeaways. When there's no restrictions on you can even get a GF beer - wow - amazing place with really friendly staff. Suzie thank you !

We visited the restaurant last Wednesday, whilst on holiday in the area. The restaurant was immaculately clean and sanitiser was readily available, at the entrance. Having made a reservation, we were seated immediately and made to feel very welcome, by the waitress that served us for the evening. The menus were cleverly seated beneath the glass table top, so we were able to browse them at our leisure. Drinks were offered and served promptly and our order taken. For starter, two of our party ordered the vegetable spring rolls and three ordered the garlic mushrooms. The food arrived after a very short wait and it was evidently homemade and piping hot upon arrival. Both of the dishes were very tasty and the spring rolls were served upon a bed of fresh salad. The waitress was very attentive, without being overly imposing, keen to check that we were enjoying the food. The mains arrived without delay; we had opted for fish pie, scampi and chips and steak pie. The food was beautifully presented and again, very evidently homemade, with generous portions. The steak pies were complete, miniature pies, with a shortcrust pastry and were served with chips and vegetables. The fish pie was served in a large ramekin dish, with mashed potato and cheddar on top and a portion of fresh, steamed vegetables. Both of the pies were generously filled, with plenty of meat and large pieces of fresh fish. Lastly, the scampi, which was served with chips and fresh peas; this was wholetail, Whitby scampi, as advertised and was equally very enjoyable. Again, the waitress was very efficient in providing extra sauces and offering additional drinks. We ordered desserts and coffee, including a white chocolate and raspberry roulade, jam sponge and sticky toffee pudding. Once more, these were all homemade and absolutely delicious. Whilst the restaurant did not have a coffee machine, the coffee was served fresh, in a cafetière and was very pleasant. From start to finish, the meal, service and atmosphere was exceptionally good and we would not hesitate to return, or recommend to anyone, if visiting the area.

Fab food. The tables are in wee booth like settings. It feels very private and safe. I felt extremely comfortable eating here. The food is particularly good too. The owners are very much hands on so they ensure that the food is good and customers go away happy. I am delighted I stayed here.

Six of us went for Christmas lunch & couldn't have asked for anything more as the food, staff & atmosphere were all excellent. We had complimentary fizz, which was a nice touch, and the champagne sorbet after the starter was fantastic. It was a great day made even more special having had such a great meal thanks to Suzanne & her staff, who worked tirelously to make this happen! Would definately recommend!

Sunday lunch was good home cooked tasty food. The pork was melt in the mouth. Proper mash that had seen a potato and not packet rubbish. Proper Yorkshire Puddings and coming from Yorkshire that is a must! The lady serving us was really friendly and chatty. Would have no hesitation in returning or recommending to others.

Evening meal two days ago.......THREE great things about the Star 1) Excellent reasonably priced home cooked food 2) An old fashioned and cosy little pub like you rarely see these days 3) The friendliest lady behind the bar......made us feel welcome and valued Add to this a prompt, cheerful and helpful response by the owner to my e mail, and the place is summed up. Well worth a visit...... a great community pub with a reputation well deserved for. Award winning pies

Whilst visiting friends in Twynholm visited The Star for lunch. The meal was excellent with all enjoying what we had. They also serve smaller portions if requested which is a bonus particularly for older ladies (or gents) who don't want huge portions especially for lunch. Would thoroughly recommend. Hotel has always enjoyed a high regard with locals and visitors.

This is my local and I can walk to this restaurant. I ordered a half portion of Gluten free fish and chips. The batter was just right , crisp , thin and tasty. There is a good choice on the menu. Once a month they have an interesting list of live music with your meal.My friends from away were very pleased with their choices too. Friendly service and well worth a visit.

Visited the Star hotel in Twnholm on Friday night. Meal was excellent with great choice and lovely fresh food. Had taken my elderly parents who appreciated being able to get smaller portions which is great for someone with a smaller appetite and meant they could manage three courses! Best prawn cocktail I have had in ages. Hubble had the burger for main course and it was huge. Didn't affect ourselves but is good to see that they cater for food allergies and gluten free. Also very good value for money. Very impressed.

Just back from an epic gorgeous lunch today Sunday 12/05/18 was going somewhere else but it was closed and I remember reading about this place so glad we went . Spotless place , landlady I think was lovely , brilliant menu , Homemade chips and mash , roast potatoes. I started with the amazing pate great size portion had it with toast but you can have oatcakes definitely 100 percent homemade so beautiful. Mains . Wife and dad had the Sunday Roast lamb with all the trimmings no frozen veg here the mash was scrummy and even thou lamb is one of my least favourite meats I tried some it was cooked perfect. I had one of the best burgers ever comes with bacon , cheese , oioins ring , homemade chips what a delight lovely tomato , pepper and red oionin salad and dip. I was full but wife had dad had the meraunge with fresh fruit and ice cream it looked like a piece of art on a plate and the age every bit. It's so reasonable priced in here and quality food I for one will definitely be back very soon .

All I can give is 5 stars. Worth more. The owner opened especially for my fathers 90th birthday. With 3 of us gluten free the Star is a great place to go and eat as 95% of the menu is GF so my father could order anything he liked from the menu, which he did. Many, many thanks. Will definitely be back again.

This is our second visit to The Star primarily due to its excellent gluten free menu. However a visit is recommended whether you need gluten free or not as The Star gives you good quality, good value pub grub with excellent service. We’ll be back when we’re next in the area.

We went here with family as some had been before due to the large choice of gluten free meals and as my title says, it is great for that - most of the menu is indeed gluten free. Thankfully not something I need to worry about.

I don't think we would have found this pub ourselves as it is a bit off the beaten track but we we advised to give it a try off one of the locals.

This is a little local hotel in a village by-passed by the A75. There is a tiny public bar to one side of the front door and a surprisingly large dining room to the other. The public bar is fairly unreformed an atmospheric save for rather sterile lighting. The dining room has obviously had a major make over some years ago, but in spite of its relative modernity, it is till very traditional in its use of wooden box bench seating. The food is straight-forward pub grub, the steak pie is very much home made, complete with a star on the top. It is delicious. The pudding was a freshly made and rather tipsy trifle. The beer is rather depressingly boring pasteurised stuff, but I have been told there is not the turnover to justify, say, Salwath, which is brewed only five miles away in Castle Douglas. When we went, the one person serving made a good effort to put us off eating there, telling us that the chef had gone home early, thereby suggesting that there would be a big problem. We stayed and everything appeared within about ten or fifteen minutes. Another couple also was not put off; but the third in, went out. I'd have merely said that I was the only one on that evening, so it could take a few minutes more than it might otherwise...if I had said anything at all, rather than lost trade. Anyway, if you like steak pies and traditional hotel/pubs, it's worth a visit.

We visited the star on a recommendation of friends. The food was excellent, freshly cooked and locally sourced produce. our friend is gluten free and was amazed at the choice of food on offer. The staff were very knowledgeable and were able to tell all ingredients, so our friend was able to choose her meal quite happily. Even the cakes, pastry, bread and pasta were gluten free. The restaurant was fairly quiet and we were amazed at this considering the quality, price and service on offer. They even have a choice of 0.5% Wines which were excellent. Well worth making the effort of going to Twynholm. We will be back soon.

A lovely warm welcome from the Lady serving us and so far the best breakfast I have ever had in Scotland (and I've had a few). Cafe is spotlessly clean and prices are fair, well worth a visit in my honest opinion.

This cafe served the worst scone I have ever had / didn't have. (and that's saying something as I'm in my 70s and have had a few in my time. You could build a house with a few of them. Inedible expensive rubbish. It came in a paper bag, no plate and a wooden disposable knife which struggled to cut it. The coffee was served in a paper cup. But was drinkable. Cost over £13 for two coffees and two inedible scones. I am disgusted and will definitely won't be back

Visited the Frothy this morning for the first & very last time as the cafe is closing. Whilst the cafe was comfortable the coffee wasn’t the best ever tasted and we were stunned at the price! Compared to other coffee houses close by it was surprising; could this be a reason they are not finding it profitable?
