A great menu choice, with both set menu and a la carte, we went a la carte. Halibut, scallop, veal, pork, cheese and gooseberry brandy snap, all were beautifully presented, delicious and perfect portions. We chose a couple of glasses of recommended wines and they were excellent choices. Staff were lovely. All in all a fantastic evening.

Had a surprise birthday meal at the Star whilst visiting the area for the weekend and staying near Castle Howard. The welcome was warm despite a dreary night weather wise. The service was efficient, friendly and informative throughout. The food was outstanding. Maybe the most flavoursome meal I have ever eaten. Appetisers were bread, salted bread sticks and a selection of spreads and a dip. Then on to the starter where I chose a pea potage, which was creamy, flavoursome and full of exquisite surprises. Every mouthful an adventure in itself. For my main I chose duck cooked three ways which was a tiny cup of duck tea, to be sipped, a cold duck tartlet and a pan fried breast. It was a treat, cooked to perfection, tasted devine and was delivered and explained with charm and expertise by the serving staff. I took a light desert of three tiny ice cream cornets which left me very satisfied and not too full, but do wish I had tried the raspberry soufflé which was my partners choice. I certainly felt a little plate envy but fear I may have left feeling more than satisfied and a tad over burdened but he assured me his choice was tasty and light, proven by a plate left squeaky clean and a smile of satisfaction. I hope I get the opportunity to visit again but if not I do have the joy of the memory of a wonderful dining experience at every level.

There is no question, this is a fabulous place to eat. The service is excellent and the food is beautifully prepared. It's also fabulously expensive, so the 4 stars is not because we were disappointed with the meal, but because for nearly £400 for 2 tasting menus and a child's meal, it has to be out of this world. And it nearly was! My only reservation is that some of the ten courses on the tasting menu were just a bit too contrived. All the ingredients were outstanding, but there was just too much going on with some of the small plates. The juxtaposition of flavours was deliberately surprising, but a few times it was jarring. Having said that, this would have been a 5-star dining experience in every other way. Was it a beautiful, memorable meal for my 70th birthday? Absolutely. Was it a once-in-a-lifetime experience? Certainly. Was it worth every penny? Not quite! I have had one other experience of a Michelin-rated restaurant's tasting menu (at the Old Bank Bistro in Snettisham) and it too was outstanding, and only slightly more than half the price of this one. But we would certainly go back for another once-in-a-lifetime experience, although we would probably go for the traditional menu rather than the tasting menu. Still, if money is no object, you will not be disappointed!

I had the most wonderful meal at the Star. I was on my own and the ambiance in the restaurant and the friendliness of all the staff was great. I had lindisfarne oysters as a bar snack and they were stunning. So creamy . I ordered my meal from the a La carte menu. Cured halibut to start, wild sea bass and a raspberry soufflé. Also it’s worth mentioning that I could order a half bottle of great Chablis which was good for me being a solo diner. Each course was exquisitely cooked. to perfection and the combination of flavours and textures was outstanding. This was by far the best meal I’ve had in many years. The dessert was the best I’ve ever had.

We were staying at the nearby Pheasant Hotel but had one dinner here - and on the whole the Star Inn had a more interesting menu and food which was at least as good. Service was also excellent. It's expensive, of course, but for a Michelin rated place that's normal.

From the moment we walked into the Star Inn, we loved it! The staff were so friendly and down to earth and it has such a lovely relaxed feel which you don’t always find with Michelin stars. We had the 8 course tasting menu and wine flight which was amazing, a taste sensation! The staff were so knowledgeable, friendly and polite throughout and it was a fantastic experience! Can highly recommend.

The quality of the food and the service were both exceptional. This was an amazing experience. We were also able to purchase a 0% alcohol Noughty Blanc, which was super fabulous!! We opted for the summer lunch tasting menu and included the optional extra Signature dish as well as sharing an optional cheese soufflé; we were delighted we did as these were possibly the best of the fantastic bunch. Each course was perfection. It’s surprising how time flies, we sat eating and chatting for well over 2 hours in beautiful surroundings. Cannot wait to come back.

Not been here for a few years, certainly before the pyromaniac did his best to destroy the place, but our visit last week was a joy. We stayed in the Barn for the first time and found the room to be superb. Fabulously appointed and spotlessly clean. The tasting menu was hugely enjoyable, evidence of the current head chefs ability to deliver beautiful crafted dishes. As an all round package I’m of the opinion that this visit was probably the best yet. Just a lovely place to relax and recharge.

Had the Table D'hote menu here and not too impressed Service far too fast and felt pressurised to get on with the meal and get out Slightly disorganised start to the meal Starter soup ok . Quiche had no flavour and felt a bit heavy and "sticky" Main course of roast beef. Good quantity of tender beef but ruined by copious amounts of gravy already on it which meant the meat couldn't be tasted. Also far too many herbs. The forcemeat was far too strong and the whole course a bit off balance Must mention the recommended wine here. House Portugese red blend that was astringent and way off the mark and was in no way a balance for the meal Sweet however was delicious Coffee ok but served in a large mug! Sorry guys but not my idea of Michelin star or 3 rossettes

Stayed one night. Room very pleasant.Had drinks in garden of restaurant. Garden very overgrown and neglected and just mud base. Menu amusing - lots of strange descriptions "tumbleweed"? Lots of fermented items on most of mains which if you dont like that sort of thing left choices limited.Food expensive and frankly not very good.Breakfast next morning was dreadful. Yoghurt was the texture of jam and the fruit consisted mainly of apple. Eggs not cooked properly and mushrooms touch. We will not return.

Pre-booked months in advance, then rebooked due to Covid. We were told no room in restaurant so would have to eat in the bar area. No problem with this. On arrival took our seats at a very long but narrow curved wooden table. Unable to sit opposite partner as too narrow. We were not offered the tasting menu so ordered from the rather limited menu provided. Partner could not have any of the starters due to her personal tastes so ordered cheeseboard. I had octopus carpaccio starter. Then some breads came, very tasty and unique, but then very quickly the starters came so everything was crammed on. It was at this point that a table of four next to us enquired about the tasting menu and were told it was only served in the restaurant. Within minutes the four of them were moved to the restaurant where we had been told there was no room. My starter was ok, that's all I can say about it. Partner ordered steak for main and it did not come cooked how she requested it. This was rectified swiftly and removed from the bill. I had lamb two ways, an incredibly small island of meat on a vast sea of china plate. Rhubarb souffle for dessert was tasty but left us wanting more. Not enough attention from staff to our empty glasses and had to call them over several times. Bill 110. They added surcharge which I hate. May come again for the tasting menu

I have been to this restaurant approximately 5 or 6 times over the last few years, and it has been very good before, however the time I visited last week and the time I visited pre lockdown were very poor, so poor I thought I should write a review. I dined here for Sunday lunch, the starter of beef tea was poor, and nothing what you would expect at somewhere that is supposedly a Michelin star, again I have dined here in the past and the food has been exceptional some of the previous times.I had roast beef for mains, which was okay, besides the vegetables that came with it were shockingly bad. Roast potatoes, were of a poor standard, frozen ones would of probably been tastier. Green veg and carrots, still had soil on them and had not been washed properly. The head waiter seemed to show a very pompous attitude, and was not the friendliest. In this supposedly Michelin star restaurant the cutlery was placed back to front, forks on the right side, knives on the left. The waiters weren't very attentive, as you would expect in a Michelin star restaurant, I ordered a jug of water for the table when our food order was taken, it did not arrive till during the main course. It was then placed away from the table(the waiters here always do this), this would be okay, if they were attentive enough to refill your glass(but unfortunately they are not). Also, a meat smoker perhaps or a fire was getting used in the garden at the time, and we came back with our clothes smelling of smoke, tables nearby to us complained and were moved, but I had enough at this point and asked for the bill before our table was even cleared. As I have stated before, I have been here in the past and had very good food and service(some of those waiters and waitresses might still work here, just not in charge of our section perhaps)., However, a restaurant with the prices like here, should always be exceptional, but the last few experiences Ive had here have been very poor.

The food was wonderful, delicious, and it was very pleasant to sit in the garden. The downside was the music. I asked the waiter if it could be turned down but it wasn’t. I would go so far as to say the terrible sounding cover versions almost spoiled the whole occasion. So much effort is put into every aspect of this lovely restaurant the owners should really rethink this awful noise.

We had a delightful lunch today in the garden of The Star at Harome (outdoor dining only under present restrictions) in glorious sunshine, thankfully. The tasting menu and wine accompaniment were excellent. The selection of dishes was varied and imaginative. Highlights for us were the cauliflower, onion & truffled Moorland Tomme 'whip', the lamb cheek and the rhubarb souffle with gingerbread ice cream and spiced syrup - but every course was flavoursome and delicious. The service was exceptional - professional and knowledgeable, but friendly too. A most enjoyable experience. We'll be back!

We had visited and very much enjoyed the other two "Star" restaurants (York & Whitby) and were keen to visit the original. We managed this on the first day restaurants were allowed to open on 12th April 2021 after the third UK lockdown. Despite having to eat lunch outside due to the restrictions we were lucky with the weather and had a very enjoyable lunch. The food was excellent and given the place has a Michelin star the prices were very reasonable. My Venison main was excellent as was the Bavarois starter although I had to ask what it was! Deserts were also excellent. The staff were amazing, so friendly and genuinely seemed happy to be welcoming customers back after lockdown. Andrew Pern was out in the garden too and it was a real pleasure to chat with him. We dined with our five year old and it was great to be able to choose from a children's menu at a top class restaurant. Highly recommended and we will definitely return.

Having read previous reviews, the Star Inn remains a very good restaurant (with rooms) and justifies more than one or three trip advisor stars given by others. My wife and I had dinner and a room booked having had to cancel our first booking. We thought that the restaurant was Covid secure with good distances between tables. The ox cheek main course was excellent but the venison was minimalist to say the least and no vegetables served. On the menu these were complimentary ( misspelt) and in reality not complementary at all. The service was so so and would have been improved if the waiters were consistently attentive. Over the course of the evening at least 5 different waiters were needed to take the orders and serve the food. The staff were pleasant but appeared disorganised. Breakfast the following morning was average

Roughly 15 years ago whilst staying in Helmsley we were recommended to dine at the Star Inn and really enjoyed the meal and general ambience. It therefore became first choice when planning a trip to N Yorks for a special occasion particularly as accomodation had been added in the intervening years. On arrival we were made very welcome and shown to our room (No. 4) which regrettably was located over the communal lounge and reception areas, but without any sound proofing at all. In fact one wall of the room was effectively a single thickness window. Unfortunately, probably due to Covid restrictions, it was very noisy both before and after the dining room closed at 10.0pm. We like a convivial time as much as the rest, but didn’t really want to hear the details of fellow residents lives, well into the late evening. And so to the food. This was to have been the highlight of our visit so it was unfortunate to say the least when I was taken ill during the afternoon and had to miss the long anticipated dinner. My wife did not want to dine alone in the restaurant and arranged to have a meal sent over to the breakfast area in the hotel. All the staff were extremely helpful and the meal, soup and rack of lamb, were duly delivered. The soup was delicious, but the lamb very fatty and the vegetables watery and not very appetising. I accept that part of this may have been due to the transfer from kitchen to hotel, but didn’t account for the unappetising lamb. Breakfast was taken in a separate area at the hotel and whilst very pleasant, delivered all at one go despite there being a nearby kitchen cooking them. This wasn’t quite the standard we were expecting from such a highly acclaimed establishment. It’s possible that my remarks have been coloured by feeling Ill, but we were quite disappointed with our visit, particularly the room, and got a distinct impression the Star Inn was trading on its past reputation and not delivering the high level of service for which it was previously renowned

Lovely mushroom broth, lemon sole with Whitby crab and a cider veloute and finally an amazing apple crumble soufflé with Pedro ximenez and curd tart ice cream. Kids enjoyed steak and chips and a coke float pudding. Attentive service from Harry where clearly dietary information was shared ahead amongst staff. The two of us arrived Saturday afternoon, double G&T to start before the "Taster Menu" with the matched wine package. The room (room 9?) was spacious. Little amuse bouches to start, Oyster & mini merguez hotdog to follow, the a roasted cauliflower, cheese & truffle. Next course white & brown crab. Star Inn signature dish next: grilled black pudding with foie gras & chutney - heavenly, followed by scallop & jerusalem artichoke. Then the choice of main course. Herself had the honey-glazed duck with smoked beetroot & I went for grouse, fig ketchup and a game kebab. Swets next: the best black cherry & triple cream in a ginger brandysnap, then hot raspberry souffle with bitter chocolate ice cream. We hadn't finished yet as Yorkshire brie and pickled girolles, peanut butter fudge, armanac chocolate truffles & coffee except that we waddled back to our room on the stroke of 10pm with 2 irish coffees. We were served 10 separate wines with the meal - only about 100ml each, but that was enough. Our server, Liam deserves a special mention for being good and amusing, and herself commented afterwards that some of those courses were the best she has EVER eaten. Each course quantity is not large, but with 12 courses or so, you don't need much. The place is generally booked solid, and not surprisingly. Breakfast served in room because of covid but fine also.

Amazing food at the Star. My wife had the steak which was very good and came with a salad with a very tasty dressing. The pork came with peas "French style", where one of the herbs unfortunately overpowered the others, but otherwise the food was great. There was a pulled pork pie (a tad dry and cried out for a sauce or gravy) that was good and the main pork was cooked perfectly. My wife had the raspberry soufflé which was out of this world. I had the trio of ice creams which were not the usual boring trio, but included mango and violet! I'll never enjoy another ice cream again when I have tasted how good ice cream can be.The staff were friendly and helpful without being "in your face" and the service was just right. We arrived having come from Hampshire for the weekend so we could enjoy the tasting menu at The Star ( cancelled from April due to Covid ) We booked a cab from Helmsley and arrived for our long afternoon to be told you had to book the tasting menu in advance. The manageress said it was a drop down when we booked online - there is no drop down. Our cab driver told us that he’d dropped people only 2 days before and as always , they were choosing when they got there which menu to have. They hadn’t booked in advance. The staff were not, I didn’t feel , genuinely apologetic. They didn’t seem to care about the distance we had come or the huge disappointment having wasted the day we’d set aside for our treat. The restaurant is beautifully appointed inside but I can’t say the food that we had was particularly special.

Blame Lucy as it was her idea and she managed to convince Alison, the elder of our two daughters, to share the tab. We were driven from our home to the Star at Harome (near Helmesley, north of York) by Alison; both of us and the dog sat in the back. The dog of course had to come too and Alison nobly volunteered to chaperone the dog during the celebration. We arrived at the pub with five minutes to spare - well done Alison!Of course we had to observe all the special measures in place, but that didn't spoil the occasion. The menu was long and covered a good many of my favourite dishes. Louise chose the "Posh Prawn 'n' Smoked Salmon Cocktail" and I had the "Paté du Jour" - the paté was excellent, but when Louise let me taste her sorbet - whow! I'm sorry that we don't have any photos of the starters as we rather fell on them in the excitement and devoured them before we thought of photgraphing them for posterity. We both chose the "Roasted Thirkleby Duck Breast" for the main course and every part of that dish was prepared to perfection. We also shared a side portion of the "Dripping-cooked Fat Chips" and a side portion of cooked vegetables came with the dish. We both agreed that this was the Star attraction. What to choose for dessert? Quelle problème - there was such a wonderful choice. Louise had seen the "Baked Raspberry Soufflé" being delivered to the next table so that was her choice. I felt very well fed and chose a boule of each of the "Selection of Ice Creams". Louise let me taste her soufflé - it was magnificent. My preferred boule was the "Parma Violet 99" - a taste I had never encountered in my life. All too soon it was time to ring for our chauffeur, but both of our mobile phones didn't connect to the local network. Happily as we were ordering coffee for Louise and tea for me, Alison put her head round the door and asked if we had finished yet. She was concerned that, as it was four o' clock, we might be ejected from the premises. As we sat and had our beverages, we were surprised by an additional plate that arrived with 'Happy Anniversary' scribed in chocolate with a chocolate morsel - from the kitchen staff. It had been a wonderful occasion and we both felt very happy as Alison drove us carefully back past Castle Howard and Kirkham Priory.

For main course I had the duck and my husband had the pork. Both dishes were cooked to perfection and the plate was dressed in a very appealing manner. You could tell how much work and precision had been put into the dishes and the flavours all complemented each other very well. Tricky one this, we stayed and had dinner two nights running at Andrew Pern’s flagship, Michelin starred Star Inn. It’s a very beautiful, olde worlde thatched pub with gardens, so you can just pop in for a pint of Black Sheep although you may be asked to sit in the Drinking Field if the garden is full or the waitress thinks it might get full at some point. The small, secluded dining room seems oddly stark in these COVID secure times. Tables clear of glasses or cutlery and only one group arriving at any given time. The a la carte menu is surprisingly well priced considering this is Michelin starred quality. But don’t worry you’ll easily spend 100 pounds a head, double that if you go for the special wine list and who knows what if you go for the tasting menu with tasting wine list!I was disappointed that when I asked “is Andrew in tonight?” the waiter laughed and said Andrew doesn’t cook anymore! Highlights of course are the signature starter of black pudding with fois gras - exceptional but very rich. The daily fish was an outstanding halibut dish, the red deer and also the lobster risotto were amazing. On the other list, the Posh Prawn cocktail wasn’t anything special, the lamb tea was weird and the grouse quite unpleasant. Ho hum - finally a shout out to Eve who was front of house on day 1 and helped us with our wine choice; you made our night, wish you’d been there the next night too!

Just departed from a 2night stay at The Star coupled with 2 nights booked in for food. The service at the accommodation lodgings was very high and the quality of food was amazing however after footing a bill of over £800 we feel The Star needs to be looking at the dining customer experience, as it didn't match up to their reputation, our expectations and the bill ..few examples.- Upon entering the restaurant the first night there was no Front of House to greet us. At this level of restaurant one would expect a Maitre de which had one been in place I doubt some of the below points would have occured.- Upon ordering the Taster Menu with paired wines we proceeded to wait 40mins for our first oyster dish. Then 1 wine listed on the menu was unavailable (just print off new menus). Also we had 4 different waiters take us through the experience which felt disjointed and some had more enthusiasm than others.- Asked for an evening blanket as had seen others wearing, I was given a used one which upon reflection I should not have used as defeats trying to be covid safe.- 2nd evening we arrived 5 mins early and asked to wait outside for 10mins to get table prepared. My husband went to the outside bar where the barman didn't look up to acknowledge him even after standing there on his own for a period of time. He sat at a table and we waited whilst another waiter proceeded to clean 3 tables without asking us if were being attended to, so I advised he should go back to the bar again. After receiving drinks another waiter came with menus mentioning we had arrived late for our table! Some of the restaurant staff were very friendly however the level of service was what we would expect at a standard bistro pub not a Michelin star one. When you spend what we spent over 2 days we would expect to be made feel special and a high attention to detail given... get yourself a high quality Maitre de who can lead the team.

I don’t really like adding reviews like this but something needs to be addressed with the staff to save the Stars reputation.Have been to The Star many times but it seems to have gone downhill regarding service (apart from one team member). The food is unquestionably lovely and the place itself it very comfortable and well presented but...Not sure what has happened here - we arrived before the time due and there were three staff at the bar looking at something (maybe bookings) and only one could be bothered to look up and ask if we required help...it wasn’t the redhead male waiter. This theme seemed to run on throughout the night as we appeared to be invisible to all staff - empty wine glasses for over half an hour and water only offered when we first sat down and never topped up and empty too.The neighbouring table had to put their empty glasses at the end of their table too and ask for a top up.After ordering the lamb and being told (by the redhead waiter) it came with seasonal vegetables I asked for some potatoes to share with our mains...it arrived with potato salad. When asking him why it was delivered (after the meal as we couldn’t get anyone’s attention and weren’t checked upon) he said “it said potato salad on the menu” - Brilliant customer service Mr!Seriously, these staff (bar the young man with brown cropped hair who was superb) need some serious training! No one really smiled or tried to make conversation - we were never asked if we wanted more to drink (alcohol) - never asked if everything was ok with the food - never asked when making payment how the evening was etc etc...the list goes on.This is Michelin starred for crying out loud so should therefore be a special experience not average.Permanently struck off our list.

I, along with my fiancé and another couple visited here on Saturday at 4pm. The restaurant inside was quiet and staff very friendly. We enjoyed a 3 course meal with wine and lager. Everyone throughly enjoyed themselves over the leisurely dinner with us finally leaving about 7:45pm. I had the lamb tea, steak and raspberry soufflé, all of which I’d thoroughly recommend. Can’t wait to go back.

I had booked two nights at the Star and the Tasting menu on the second night as a Christmas gift for my husband. On checking in we were shown the breakfast room and lounge areas at Cross House Lodge on the way to our room. They were all quite quirky but very comfortable, with a homely welcoming feel and the complimentary cheese and nibbles was a nice touch. Our room was very comfortable and, as I prefer a bath, was not unduly bothered that the shower was only an over the bath type. Rather than go elsewhere we decided to eat at the Star on our first night as well and try the 'Locals menu' which at £25 for 3 courses was amazing value and very very good. Breakfast around the massive communal table was good although everyone eating around one table is not everyone's cup of tea. On our second night we had the tasting menu which was amazing, all dishes beautifully presented with some very interesting flavours and combinations. At £85 per person this was again good value for money. We found the service from all the staff to be excellent and the young lady explaining the dishes and the accompanying wines with the wine flight was very good. I have read some of the more negative reviews and find it very difficult to understand them. The pub/restaurant is an amazing building in a fabulous little village with a welcoming and unstuffy ambience, the staff are very good, the food and wines excellent and we found the whole experience fabulous.

Visited The Star this afternoon to celebrate our 10th Wedding Anniversary. We've never been to a Michelin Starred restaurant and weren't really sure what to expect. My word, blown away. It was literally like Masterchef in real life. From start to finish, the service, the atmosphere, the food (ohh the food!) was exceptional. We both ate from the a la carte menu and both had Pork done two ways, followed by a chocolate dessert called 'Malt'The waitress gave us some Sourdough and Black Pudding bread (free) while we were waiting for our main course which was lovely. Then shortly arrived again with a Mutton Broth each (free) from the chef while we were waiting. I can only describe as the taste of a whole Sunday dinner in a little pot that was mostly liquid. Incredible. After we were done with that, our main course arrived. This was served and then dressed by the waiter in front of us. Then came some Potato Gratin and seasonal vegetables (free) to go with it. I'm not going to describe everything, however, the whole thing was stunning.Dessert time - this was the part of the menu where I wanted every option. We both chose the dessert 'Malt' - have a look at the menu online for the full description, however, all I'll say again is beautiful.Throughout, the service was outstanding, in particular a young lady was so friendly and chatty and looked after us (she took a picture outside for us after so the restaurant knows who she is). While we were chatting we mentioned it was our anniversary - next thing you know (and by this time we were stuffed) a plate came out with a small piece of brownie and a decorated plate wishing us happy anniversary.I honestly can't fault anything and would go back in a heartbeat. Thank you for making our day unforgettable. For those of you out there, who like me, am not really into 'fine dining and don't drink wine etc.' I had a pint of Black Sheep. Dress was smart casual (I had black jeans and long sleeved polo on) and I didn't feel out of place. Give it a try.

My lasting impression of this restaurant is us leaving. From a misplaced sense of generosity I said thank you to the uniformed chef, industriously smoking right outside the front door. He grunted, wafted a dismissive hand, and returned to his more important cigarette. I could not help but think if he had devoted that much attention to his profession the food emanating from the kitchen might have been worthy of the prices charged. The service was faultless, and the bread was nice. Thereafter bland food vied with over-salty in a series of 'almost' nice dishes. Is it over optimistic to expect duck to taste of duck? Or for a baba to have a hint of sweetness? Clearly I am too picky. Is this quality reflected in the price...? Oh no. But those ciggies are not cheap are they?

We had the tasting menu at the Star Inn on a Wed in mid-February. While the service was friendly, there must have been problems in the kitchen that night. Our first courses arrived in very quick fashion and then there was a very long time gap for subsequent courses - just too long; both the foie gras and the partridge were overcooked; and bread was neither offered nor served - although diners who ordered from the A la Carte menu did receive bread! We thought that our meal at the Pheasant Hotel was a much better dining experience.

Very nice surroundings and atmosphere. My fellow diners enjoyed their food but as a vegetarian I found the service I received lacking.I had pre warned the restaurant I was a vegetarian but the menu I was presented with had nothing suitable despite a number of items apparently easily modified. I was on asking given a menu with a small selection of dishes, but despite it being stated main courses came with vegetables I was presented with potatoes roasted in duck fat!As a local who has visited a number of times in the past and been well treated I found this disappointing. They also need to clean the door closing mechanism into the kitchen as it was coated in grease and fluff

We went there for my birthday Feb 15, when my husband booked for a meal for 3 of us he requested a small thing from them for my birthday even just a small birthday message in the plate and they said they will do it and so when we arrived we also reminded the waitress that it was my birthday and short story we finished all our 3 course meal with tea and coffee stayed until late but it was getting too late and they never done anything or said anything and we came home very disappointed because we are local and we are regulars we go there 3-4 times a year or even if we just want to treat ourselves and specially if it’s special occasion. Food we have no complaint every time it’s always good but just a small request that they couldn’t even do it I know for some people it don’t matter but for us it was a special night. Then next day my husband email and explained to the star inn in Harome about what we expected that night but very disappointed they couldn’t even reply to us and maybe explained or just maybe to say something that they don’t do it anymore or whatever first time we had a bad experienced from their restaurant and I’m not sure if we are going back there again considering we only live 2 1/2 miles away from Harome. Hope it won’t happen to others because The Star Inn has their name and so sad they couldn’t do a small gesture for that night

We couldn’t wait to come back here after visiting a few years back. However we were underwhelmed this time. The bread was a nice touch but the butter had no taste. My husband and I ordered the beef roast dinner. There was no horseradish even the the menu had stated there would be. My husband enjoyed his beef but mine was rather fatty. The roast potatoes were overcooked and difficult to cut. Finally lack of gravy meant the Yorkshire pudding was too dry to eat. Such a shame as the surroundings are lovely and the staff were very nice.

This is fourth visit to The Star Inn and, happily, it continues to delight. On this occasion we opted for the 12 course Winter Tasting Menu which we enjoyed enormously from start to finish. This included the optional "Signature Dish" (Fois Gras on Black Pudding) which really was utterly superb, if you are comfortable with fois gras. The wines really were very good, whilst remaining very reasonably priced, and the service very friendly. All in all, then, a fabulous Michelin Star experience which we wholeheartedly recommend.

We came for dinner here for my husbands 30th as some years ago we were enthusiastically advised by my sister and her husband that in place of wine pairing, they did an option for beer pairing with the amazing food here! My husband being a big fan of beer was naturally, very excited! We were not disappointed. The food was lovely, unpretentious, and very generously portioned and sure enough he got his beer pairing which he thoroughly enjoyed. A fair few of the courses we had came with a sauce, jus or gravy of some kind and I cannot stress this enough, they were all AMAZING! I would have drunk the dregs of every last one of them if it hadn’t been such a classy establishment. The staff were all friendly, the atmosphere was lovely and all in all we had a wonderful evening. The only slight complaint, and really it’s not a complaint, more a note, was that with the portions being good, and numerous courses and then what was a very generous glass of beer with each, my husband was really struggling with just being too full. Yes he perhaps could have left some of the beer but we really don’t like waste... The wine was not so volumous, and therefore by the end I was of course full, but not struggling, whereas my husband was really forcing in the last desert. I realise that if a bottle/can has had to be opened then a generous glug of beer is a good thing, but in this instance it was just perhaps a little too much by the end. Killed with kindness! However if the only thing we can think of outside of a glowing review was that this place is over generous then that really can’t be a bad thing! Thank you to all for a wonderful evening, we hope to be back one day, I will find another excuse, I mean occasion!

We had a two night foodie break at the Star Inn and we really enjoyed the experience. On the first night we had the 12 course tasting menu (including the optional foie gras and black pudding signature dish) with wine pairings, and on the second night we sampled the a la carte menu with a three course meal. The tasting menu had incredible diversity and was a food experience that will live long into our memories. Each dish had intrigue and flavour. The a la carte courses were light and cooked with great precision. Our Star Inn foodie break was really enjoyable.

As well as the full a la Carte the Star serves a “Locals’ Lunch” which is a set meal taken from the a la Carte but at 25 for 3 courses or £20 for 2 courses is great value. True, you have no choice but you can check the menu on line before hand. I have never been disappointed. Two full 3 course meals with drinks before and wine with the meal for under £80 must be good for a Michelin starred restaurant. Staff were friendly and attentive without making the meal rushed. We have eaten here many times, often at lunch with the locals’ menu but occasionally in the evening where we might almost choose the same but at twice the price. Evenings I would recommend booking in advance but generally lunchtime is usually less crowded but to be honest, booking is so easy we just phone just before we leave home.

We arrived at Saturday lunchtime and ate from the main menu. The staff were warm and welcoming and made our visit very comfortable. The way our dishes were delivered and presented to us was fantastic - perhaps this is normal and I'm just not used to fine-dining but it all felt very attentive and personal! I had the posh prawn cocktail which had an amazing bloody mary sorbet - an absolute game changer and I don't think I'll ever feel the same way about the humble prawn cocktail ever again! I had the partridge as my main and having never had it before, it has certainly set the bar high. We had after dinner coffees up in the Coffee Loft which was served with some delicious handmade sweets. The atmosphere up there was delightful and such a lovely space to relax after dinner (it was so lovely, I didn't want to leave!) Needless to say, I'll definitely be back here in the future!

Walked across from Cross House Lodge where we were staying to the restaurant in good time for our booking for drinks in the bar. Really busy little bar but luckily we managed to get a seat to enjoy our drinks. Perfect bar man ready to prepare whatever drink you decided upon. With this in mind it is very much a rustic pub bar which I liked. We were given menus whilst we were sat in the bar, however we had already decided to have the tasting menu accompanied by the wine flight. We were lead through the extensive restaurant to our table. Very busy again. The meal was lovely with a host of local fresh ingredients. Lovely evening with very knowledgable staff presenting the best in food and wine. We couldn’t have enjoyed it more. Beautiful meal at the Star. All our food was prepared to perfection. There were adequate timings between courses so we could enjoy our evening and not feel rushed. Bill was very reasonable for what we had. There was nothing 'wrong' with the service as such but I would expect perfection in that area aswell in this kind of establishment. We were served by lots of different people so there was no continuity. We were sat at one point without a drink and had to get staff attention. We also ordered a drink which then never arrived and we had to get staff attention aswell. It just seemed somewhat disjointed. I am sure that this isn't the norm & it certainly wouldn't prevent us from returning.

"you enter as a stranger and leave as a friend" said the bar room sign which greeted this weary wanderer who'd taken a wrong turn. I ordered a pint and sure enough before it was pulled I was in conversation with a local man who thenintroduced me to the bar staff! The Sunday Roast was in full swing, the campers were in and out from the pub campsite and the occasional labrador was stealing hearts but nothing seemed to much trouble for the staff. This is a proper country pub, as warm and cosy as a storybook cottage and it's charm appeared to be working on a nearby American couple who's fantasies of an Olde English Country Pub had all just come true. I was on foot and was a few miles from the nearest town but lo and behold one of my new-found companions insisted on giving me a lift... As I exited the bar I glanced the "enter as a stranger and leave as a friend" sign again - this pub does what it says on the tin!

It would look like I’m beating a drum for this pub! But we keep going back because to be honest it is just such good value. Tried their two steaks for £20, choice of rump, sirloin or ribeye, we both went for sirloin, superb, cooked as we wanted, medium rare, salad, mushrooms, peas, onion rings, and a separate bowl of chips. You must try it! I also think you will find it harder to get a better pint of bitter, landlady told me lines are cleaned at the change of every barrel as well as normal cleaning.
