Great stay in an old typical village pub with a couple of lovely rooms. The owners and girl in bar/front of house are special. As the owners are Greek the menu is a mix of British and Greek classics. We are coming back as this is a special place and good value.

I stopped for Sunday Lunch at this charming old pub. The atmosphere inside was lively. Bar staff were friendly. All of the other customers were clearly people from the village and it's good to see a pub that is popular with its locals. The bar was pretty full, so I sat in the restaurant area to eat. I was the only diner and all the chat and laughter was happening in the other room but the restaurant is pleasant and clean and I had a book with me, so I wasn't too put out. I ate a bean soup and a beef roast. Neither was outstanding, flavour-wise, but both were enjoyable enough - well cooked with good quality ingredients. One excellent point in favour of the roast was that there was plenty of gravy, which is not often the case. Indeed, portions generally were generous. The bill was reasonable. I also had a well-kept half of bitter. Overall, whilst I wouldn't go out of my way for it, this is a pub I'd happily visit again if passing.

As a walking party of 12, we arrived at 2.10 pm on a Wednesday lunchtime. After a few minutes, the owner/manager appeared at the bar and uttered that food stopped at 2pm and we should have phoned ahead. We said only drinks required. These were grudgingly served. After finishing the drinks in the garden, we returned the glasses inside and said we were returning them as we were good people, He said , ‘I find that hard to believe’. The most unwelcome of welcomes I have ever known and sadly we will not be back.

Stayed overnight in a small room however the bed was queen size. Very small bathroom. The small added features such as a fridge, water bottles, soft towels, etc were touches not all pubs offer these days. The proprietor and staff very friendly and welcoming. Pub food good, albeit generally Greek as is the proprietor. Parking can be an issue. Beautiful location.

We absolutely loved The Stags Head! The greek dishes on the menu attracted me at first and the food was first class. I had juicy chicken souvlaki and baklava - I could have eaten it twice. Others had the steak and ale pie with great pastry and filled to the brim. Great ales too. The landlord makes this place, a real character that you could talk with for hours. If I was picky, the rooms are really tiny and the shower room tired but it was all clean and looked loved. Had a smashing nights sleep on a comfy bed in a really peaceful location. Don't get excited about breakfast as there is no traditional fry up but I loved the fresh fruit, muesli, greek yoghurt and honey. Excellent value for money

Room was tiny & cramped & not fresh but seemed dusty. Had to mostly keep windows shut as drinkers would smoke just outside the room. Seemed like furnishings were still from 1960 but not maintained. Also our room door would not lock. Had breakfast there but very ordinary. Overall place grubby. Thus did not eat dinner there. Owners rather unsmiling and unwelcoming.

Arrived 13.55 to be coldly greeted with a door closing and being told “we’re closing”. When I pointed out that the notice on the door said they were open until 14.30, the woman asked “do you want food?” and added “because we stop serving food at 14.00 and as it’s almost that now we won’t do any”. Without waiting for a response she then shut the door on us. The warm Greek welcome we received last time we were here is long gone. Avoid!

What a fantastic find. Lovely warm welcome from Stamitas. Lots of reminiscing being as we love Greece, plus coincidentally, he had worked near my home and my partners over the years. Our room was compact and clean with everything you need. Fresh milk and orange juice in a fridge, very welcome. Pub was shut Sunday night, but it was not a problem. Faith and Stamitas offered us a meal, but we went into Banbury. Breakfast, bot full English, but plenty of cereals, yoghurt, fruit and toast. Lovely stay. The visitors book tells it all

Just stopped off here by chance on the way back from nearby lovely Broughton Castle. It's a lovely, friendly pub with the most delicious and authentic Greek food we've had for years. The owner is lovely too! The garden area overlooking the fields out the back has some beautiful views. The only slight negative was that we were overcharged (as we found out later), but to be honest the service was so good we didn't mind leaving it as a tip instead. I also wish they had more local cask ales on tap. Tribute is fine, but it's from Cornwall! As we were leaving, we spotted a cute little hedgehog wandering around. Swalcliffe the village itself is very pretty overall. We would highly recommend this as a great pub to have an evening meal. Even better is that it's easy to get to from the M40 near Banbury.

Well where do I start, went into the establishment to be greeted with a question are you local? No smile no hello or can i help you?. Asked what beers they had but was glared back with no response. Then I asked can I have a look at the menu but was told instantly the kitchen has closed. I explained we had just eaten but maybe for another time as we quite often drive past. Bearing in mind it was only around 8:19pm. Then he said there's a garden out the back. It was said in a manner that came across as if we were not welcome in the bar area. Then as we was leaving I took the menu and empty glasses back into the bar area out of courtesy, there was food still being served which was disappointing to say the least. As a fellow Greek myself I was joyed to hear the Greek music and have always associated this with warm and welcoming experiences. Unfortunately not on this occasion.

We stayed at The Stag’s Head for several days over the school holidays; visiting family. A lovely little place. Parking can be a little tight at times but generally available on the street. Our hosts were very helpful and the continental breakfast more than sufficient to start the day (toast, coffee/tea, cereal and an assortment of fresh fruit). Rooms were clean and quite warm and fresh towels available. Wifi worked well and room also had tea/coffee (& daily shortbread). We did not have a chance to try the menu in the pub but the selection was broad and we were told the quality was very good. We can readily recommend and expect we will use this location on our next trip to the area.

Was taken here for a couple of nights for my birthday and another couple of friends came along too. The pub is rather quiet at this time of year but that was how we wanted it to be. This is a small but very nice village. One one those places you explore from but return to the comfort of. A classic English pub with a Greek family twist. Has two good double rooms for a building of its age that are well kept and ideal to return to after a night by the fire in the bar. You could time your visit as we did and pay just £25 per person for the 7 course Greek night menu. It says 7 courses but seems like many more a huge banquet that keeps on giving. Paid around £150 for 2 people for 2 nights and breakfast. Then paid just £150 for 2 for all our meals and drinks, and believe me we did not hold back. We will certainly be booking again. We probably won’t get our Greek holiday this year but the Stags Head brought a wonderful Greek family hospitality to us. These 2 rooms should be full all year round. Of course I would highly recommend it.

We stayed at this thatched pub for 2 nights in August. We had the first room along the path, which I understand is slightly bigger than the one as you go through into the garden. The room was beautifully decorated. It had a little fridge in it containing some orange juice and milk. There’s tea/ coffee making facilities and a little tv and wardrobe. The bathroom is small, but it did us just fine. There’s some toiletries too, in case you forget anything. The shower is much bigger than it originally looked, once you get in. In the mornings, we could see the horses trotting past our window. There is a restaurant bit to the pub and a bar bit, but all open plan. It’s small and cute. It has a space for a few cars to park, but other than that, you park on the road (make sure you have a good handbrake!). The people at this pub are lovely. So friendly and welcoming. The breakfast is continental Greek style with fresh fruits, yogurt and toast, but we asked for a Full English, which they did us at a couple of quid more. I’d happily stay at this place again. Clean, well looked after.

Attending a Funeral in Banbury, we needed a B & B nearby fairly quickly and found this establishment on one of the Hotel Sights which appeared to fit the bill and as we needed to sort something out fairly quickly plumped for The Stags Head.Didn’t get off to a great start as we arrived in a Thunderstorm and Hailstorm and unfortunately, found it closed due to it being mid afternoon and fairly quiet. We explained that we were involved with a family funeral and as the room wasn’t quite ready ( which we found a little disappointing)we explained that we would go and attend to things and come back later. We arrived back about 7.30pm not knowing what to expect but we needn’t have worried as we walked into a very homely establishment and were shown to a very cosy room separate from the bar area which improved my mood considerably. We enquired as to the possibility of food which we were told wasn’t a problem. So the jist of my comments are that we had a very enjoyable evening with nice food and a few drinks! The owners are very friendly and we found out a lot about Greek food as the owner is from Corfu and there was Greek food on the menu ( but not too much) and we felt really at home as some of the locals joined in the conversation. We had a very good nights sleep in a comfortable room, as it’s in a small quiet village with very little traffic and enjoyed a lovely Continental Breakfast and another chat with the owner. Had a walk around the village which was enjoyable and then onto more serious things. So, all in all, a very pleasant stay in an establishment that we would definitely go back to again.

We were not disappointed, a warm welcome, great internal decor and a range of food to appease most. What interested us was the Greek dishes and on speaking with the owner who hails from Corfu (some 30 yrs ago), we both decided to have the Chicken Souvlaki, absolutely delicious, and reasonably priced. I was expecting great things after reading all the reviews, but found what I got was actually a bit of a let down. Firstly the room that we were allocated was tiny, just room for twin beds and a wardrobe, no room to put any luggage, other than on the beds. The en-suite was the smallest that I have ever seen, so tiny that I struggled to pull up my jeans without hitting the walls with my elbows!!! The bath mat and towels were so crispy they were unpleasant to use, and other peoples left over toiletries were stored in the bathroom cupboard and shower - would have been so much nicer if the 'complimentary toiletries' mentioned on the booking site had not been used by someone else first!!There is no phone/internet or radio signal here whatsoever, not the owners fault, but not mentioned on the booking site either - had I not paid in advance, I would certainly have left and looked for somewhere else to stay. The pub next door to the rooms is pleasant enough, although the tables were sticky and could have done with a good soapy clean. The main food on offer is Greek and there is quite a good choice, but we had to wait ages for our food to arrive after we had ordered. The food, when it arrived, was piled high, but was nothing special, especially for the prices charged. After very little sleep in a claustraphobic room I hoped breakfast would fare better, but sadly it did not. Just cannisters of cereal, a huge tub of yoghurt and toast that came out as white as it went in!!There are several nice touches, the biscuits in the room, the mini fridge with fresh milk, tea and coffee (although no decaff) and mini cartons of orange juice. The owners are very friendly and informative, and the place is in a very pretty setting (albeit that it is covered in scaffolding for the next month).A lot of people love this place, but for me sadly, the bad out weighed the good.

We found this pub by chance, it is a very friendly place with great food. They severe English and Greek food. Many of the dishes remind us of our holidays on the Greek islands. Prices are reasonable.

We were lucky enough to be visiting family in the beautiful village of Swalcliffe which coincided with the local pub's Greek night. The pub/restaurant is family run by a Greek-English couple supported by their two sons. On the last Saturday of the month they host their Greek night a feast of authentic Greek food served Meze style, the menu included, but was not limited to, bread, Greek salad and Greek dip starters, Briam and grilled aubergine, Gavros, Calamares, grilled cheeses, beef souvlaki, meatballs and finally a plate of Greek deserts and fresh fruit.Greek wines, beers and metaxa were a great complement to the food and coffee. We were also treated to Greek dancing by our hosts.Rounding off a truly memorable evening. If you are ever passing through Swalcliffe we would recommend The Stags Head to you, especially if you, like us, manage to be there in Greek night.

What could be better on a warm sunny day than a Greek taverna-style lunch in the garden of an Oxfordshire village pub with a view of the village church spire over the thatched roof and meadows on the other side, all overseen by a native Corfiot? Not much from our experience.

No te decepcionará.

My partner and I came here for our first time for double celebration! Anniversary and sold our house. Staff were very friendly and welcoming on arrival. Service was excellent. I had a steak with mushrooms sauce, sautéed mushrooms and chips and it was honestly the best meal I've ever had I a restaurant. It was all cooked perfectly. My partner had the burger and he thoroughly enjoyed his. Desserts I had chocolate chip brownie and my partner had sticky toffee pudding. Food was outstanding. We were the only ones in the restaurant at the time but we liked it as it wasn't to noisy another couple did come in later. It's really lovely and romantic. The chef came out and spoke to us which was lovely . Overall, great experience. We will definitely become there new regular customers 😀

We had lovely succulent cod in really crispy batter with crispy chips that had a nice soft centre, all with salt and vinegar that you can actually taste! The portions sizes are very generous and all the staff are lovely even at the busiest of times. In our opinion this is the BEST fish n chips in Banbury by far!
