We saw the muddy stiletto award in the news and took a drive to Stables speciality coffee co. Wonderful coffee, delicious bagel and what a lovely setting. Thoroughly enjoyed our light lunch.

As part of magical visit to my former home, I had the best scone - tastier than many in my now ‘home’ in Devon - known for cream tea scones. So sad I wasn’t able to return at 10 am on Sunday for the breakfast cheesecake and look at old photos of the cafe in the old house - remembered from 1953!!!

A wonderful local cafe that we are so lucky to have. Fresh food, made on site, by a wonderful chef who has an incredible nose for flavour and makes flawless cakes. I am delighted we have a place that focuses on quality rather than churn.

This cafe is the only one in the park, particularly at the top end but has long been annoying when it comes to its opening hours. It’s not open first thing in the morning, so you can’t pop in on a walk to work or the way back from dropping kids to school. It is not open in the afternoon (it closes at 4pm) so in these warm summer days you can’t go there after you pick kids up from school or after work. Despite the park being packed. There have been times in the autumn / winter when its not even open at times it claims to be. Its almost as if the owners don’t want your money and the business is a hobby as they care not a jot about convenience for potential customers. As a consequence I can’t stand this place and wish someone else would open it with recognition of city living hours, rather than the times and reliability of an obscure village. Image taken just after 4 when its closed on a lovely summers afternoon

It pains me to leave a negative review about a local business but after 2 or 3 recent bad experiences i feel it is warranted. The Stables is in a public park and serves a purpose to the local community. I’ll start on positives, as there are many. The stables is in a great location and serves wonderful food and coffee - so hats off to the kitchen. In addition, you can’t fault the service from the two young staff members behind the counter - it’s excellent. On a summer’s day their are few better places to sit outside in NW. However. The owner(s) have ruined the last few experiences for me for a number of reasons. For all reasons i’ll leave a constructive suggestion. Primarily my recent experiences have been ruined through the owners pedantic obsession with reserving tables for their select guests. The cafe opens at 9.30. Turn up at 10am on a freezing rainy day with a baby and try and get a seat when its completely empty? No chance. Sit outside. The owners stop anyone sitting on the THREE benches until their VIPs wonder in for their brunch. If you are afforded the prize of a sacred seat you are strictly told that they have guests turning up so be quick. Not exactly a nice welcome. Their guests rarely show up at 10.30 but that’s irrelevant. They have guests. A gentle suggestion - leave ONE bench available for walk in’s. You’ll fill it every time and neighbours don’t mind sitting next to each other over their morning coffee. Most enjoy it. I’m quite sure you’ll make more money this way and your selected guests with reservations won’t mind. Next up, the minimum spend is £5 if you want to use a card. Really annoying if you’re walking past and just want to grab a coffee, or a water. It’s a CAFE. I understand businesses get hit with a small charge for using a card but when you’re charging over £3 a coffee a few pennies won’t harm. Suggestion, catch up with 2020 and drop the charge. Again, i reckon you’ll make more money. Ok. onto the bread. It’s good. REALLY good. However it’s always reserved. For their guests… It’s bread for god sake. Make it, sell it, if it sells out make more or hire someone! At £5 a loaf you wouldn’t need to sell many. Suggestion - drop the reservation process for bread. i do understand that it’s not a bread shop… Finally, stop closing for half the year. I know it’s a family business but closing every time there is a holiday is ridiculous. Also, a 9.30 opening time is late for coffee, especially when you have young kids! I”m sure the very capable young staff could run the place in the absence of the owners. Even if the kitchen has to close. In conclusion, my criticisms might be harsh but it’s a local park and it serves a purpose to the local community. It really should be more accommodating in my opinion. The building is not after all owned by the leaseholders. Hopefully my positives at the start show that i am not being unfairly harsh and i hope that they can make efforts to improve their customer service from management. i would hate to see a local business lose out to the new chain shops (like Gails) popping up all over Willesden.

I made a special trip to visit this cafe in Gladstone Park, combining it with a walk for myself and the dog. I was astonished to be told by cafe owners that - despite there not being one other customer in the cafe - I had to sit outside because of the dog. I pointed out that it was freezing, temperature was around 4 degrees C, the response was a dismissive laugh and "you're welcome to sit outside". I didn't stay. Unless you're prepared to sit outside regardless of the weather, this is NOT a place for dog lovers. It's not surprising it was completely empty whilst the park was full of people walking their dogs. Sad.

It’s hard to add anything by way of review that hasn’t already been said about this café. So let me just add my voice to the many people who have marked this establishment as ‘Excellent’. We’ve lived in Kilburn for more than 25 years, but never been to Gladstone Park until yesterday. Our loss has now been rectified and we will no doubt become regulars of the Stables Café. ps The plum tarts that we had with a pot of Earl Grey were absolutely delicious. Can’t wait to try Brunch and Lunch.

Called in for breakfast having just moved my daughter into her flat just across the road. Had poached eggs on sour dough bread. The eggs were so very fresh - the yolks were the brightest yellow. Served with rocket. My daughter being vegan had avocado with roasted tomatoes again on sourdough toast. All tasted brilliant. Friendly family service. We’ll be back. Thank you.

By human error, the lovely young man who initially served my friend and I, misheard our order; however the, at-the-rear-end-of-middle-aged man, dealt with it very unprofessionally: After having our 'tea-for-one' taken away from us to be corrected, and without any communication that we would have to pay extra for what I believed we had already paid for, (it is at this point I would expect to have been informed that it will be an extra £...) the at-the-rear-end-of-middle-aged-man, appeared with 'tea-for-two' and told us it would be an extra two pounds or so. He was visibly agitated when I question why he wanted more money. He then proceeded to lift the tray with our tea on away from us saying 'I'll just give you your money back. You don't have to drink our tea.' He then returned and abruptly placed the money back on our table. As someone who works in hospitality, this is not the way I would choose to deal with a mistake on my part... I would have apologized for the inconvenience caused, and I would not have charged for what appeared to be an extra empty cup, as the teapot was the same! Jobsworth!!

We had a very nice lunch in the cafe which is set in a lovely courtyard. It's quite an unexpected delight tucked away within the park. The food was really nice and we managed to accomodate our special dietary requirements by swapping the ingredients between the dishes. Sadly there were no gluten/dairy free cakes. It's a lovley place for lunch but the options are very limited for anyone who has celiac disease or is gluten/dairy intolerant.
