We were spending the day in Southwold and went to Squires for lunch about 12:15, quaint little place and staff were friendly. We ordered Cottage Pie and Liver and Bacon Casserole, after a wait of about 30 mins dinner arrived but instead of Cottage Pie I got Fish Pie, they took it away to replace with what I had ordered, well this took 20 mins, so by this time my other half had finished his meal and I had to eat alone During my waiting time I was waiting I observed 2 other tables place orders and were told about 15 mins later what they had chosen had 'run out' and were invited to reselect, why does it take that long? At the end of the meal I was told due to the inconvenience they reduced the bill by a small amount. Payment for food is by taking the hand written bill from the waiting staff to attached sweet sweet shop and queuing up with other customers making purchases, in my case I was no 4 in the queue. Curious to find out how much my meal was reduced by I checked the bill, the 2 meals and 2 drinks were itemised and in fact my meal had been reduced by £2 but there was an additional seperate amount of £2.50, I queried this with the 'sweet shop lady' and she checked with one on the waiting staff who agreed it was a mistake. All in all not a vey good experience.

My wife and I had lunch in Squires Café,I had the fish pie if you call it that ,my wife had savoury cheese scone and a pot of tea for twoThe scone was not fresh ,dry which was not good seen has the Café is a bakery. The so called fish pie came with three veg very dry no potatoes which should have been on the plate. When we were paying i told the cashier that my meal had potatoes and that they were on the menu with my meal she said sorry about that and that was no reduction in bill.

Just saw this cafe on the off chance tucked away in the back of a sweet shop, was really happy with our lunch. We have struggled to find anywhere that is down to earth to eat in Southwold, and have what we class as normal food on the menu. A traditional old fashioned team room where you can get a lovely home cooked lunch or something as simple as a sandwich all for a very reasonable price. We found the staff were extremely friendly and very accommodating. Wish we had found this cafe at the beginning of our holiday.

Since we were staying in Southwold for a while, we decided to try Squires. The waitress was very friendly, but we should have taken the hint from the place being empty at the height of lunchtime. The decor is dated and has a tired 70s feel about it, and that theme ran true with the food. It was like 70s school dinners. There was lots of it, but it wasn't great. It's not one we'll be returning to.

Popped in for breakfast , should have taken the hint when virtually empty ! The young lady who served us gave the impression that she didn’t want to be there but hey ho ! I ordered full English my wife the vegan alternative. My egg was overdone sausages were totally tasteless bacon overdone , my wife’s vegan alternative was much of the same highlight being the mushrooms literally tasteless . I don’t like to criticise restaurants as you can see from previous reviews but people need to be warned about this , don’t waste your time !

Being vegetarians on holiday in Soutwold looking for a good lunch/dinner, we walked up one side of the main street and down the other, looking for a reasonably priced eatery. Opted for Squiers who offered an all day breakfast and was told they do a vegetarian option. When we got inside there was a 'special of the day' board, and it was offering a nut roast, which we opted for. WOW, a nut roast with a selection of 8 vegetables, beautifully cooked and delicious, £9.95. If this had been on the board outside, vegetarians would have been fighting to get in the door. Squiers, let people know what vegetarian options you offer. Thank you for a really delicious dinner, but you could have saved us some footfall if you had advertised your vegetarian options outside, we could have chosen you much sooner.

We came here over 45 years ago when Southwold was a much simpler place and without all the shops and cafes it has today. It had a charm as did Squires with its lovely scones and little pots of butter. Today the lunches were very reasonably priced and there was a good selection. We had a lovely waitress. However, still with the potential for a charm and a sense of time standing still it desperately needs freshening up and decluttering without having to lose its character.

We went in for breakfast and thought it looked a quaint little place. The dining area was very nice. But that's where the good part stopped. The food was overpriced. I haven't had such bad service in a long while. I actually felt that we disturbed their morning catchup. As the service was rushed and very poor. For a tenner breakfast, I would have thought decent sausages would be on the plate but no very cheap and nasty sausages The toilets are up a very steep set of narrow stairs.

We recently came here for breakfast. Whilst the staff were reasonably friendly and attentive, they seemed to struggle when the place got busy. However the bacon was nice enough, as was the flat white, though the sausage a bread a let down - clearly value bought and not competitive when you consider the other options on the high street which offer much higher quality. The price was fair though but I would’ve paid a bit more for a nicer piece of meat!

My Ham and Caramalized onion panini came with no caramalized onion. When I quizzed the staff on this I was ganged up on by two of them saying that my friend had ordered me the “ham panini”. Commonly when ordering from a menu, you do not have to list every item in the description of your chosen dish for it to appear on your plate. I’m afraid the panini was so very unappealing that I just asked for a refund. My partner ordered a full English breakfast. It came with tea and orange juice; the latter of which didn’t arrive. His butter had been placed totally out of view under his toast and when he asked the waitress for some butter, not knowing it was already there on his plate, she said “yes I will get you some”; and not “it’s under your toast”. He ate most of his breakfast before he realised the rather comical error! To access the toilet you had to go out of the building and around the side. I was very unimpressed with this cafe and feel it is understandable why so many people opt for the ‘hipster’ cafes over the more traditional ones. Shame to have our one day in Southwold coloured by this poor cafe.

We had coffee and sandwiches. The coffee was very weak. Both sandwiches were on white bread which was like the cheap supermarket value bread. The fish finger one was lacking in content. The bacon, Brie and cranberry was passable. A very dead atmosphere in there. Could go with some low volume background music. Staff were nice.

We was visiting the area for the week and tried this place as my wife wanted a Cream Tea that they offered. The kitchen area is fairly open to the restaurant and maybe amplified any conversation going on in the kitchen but one of the staff was clearly a little concerned about comments concerning her work, politest way I can put that, which could be heard by all sitting down. I found it amusing, not sure others did. But I think the young lady didn’t realise everyone could hear as when she appeared, it was with a big smile on her face, so you can’t fault her for that. You never know, perhaps she had very legitimate reasons for airing her views, and had ever right to do so, just not sure right place, right time. Anyway, Wife said Cream Tea was lovely though so that was a bonus!

As a family and then as individuals or couples we have holidayed in Southwold for nearly 47 years! From as far back as I can remember (I'm the 47 year old one!) we have popped into Squiers for old fashioned sweets, liquorice roots, gifts for friends and more often than not a cream tea or lunch. The sweet shop is first and you walk through into the delightful cafe. It is very small, it hasn't really changed but I think that's part of the appeal of it. We sat down around 12pm and while there, most tables were taken. The food orders were taken in order and I guess due to the size of the kitchen the food was cooked and delivered in that same order! I asked if I could still have the breakfast and was pleasantly told that I could, the waitress was very friendly and polite. We also had a steak and ale pie with new potatoes and six veg, and a scampi that came with both salad and peas. The food was really nice looking, really hot, freshly cooked and very tasty. Definitely hit the spot! Yes there was a little wait, yes you queue to pay back in the sweet shop but what's wrong with either of those? You're getting freshly cooked food is it really too much to wait an extra few minutes? In this busy world we live in I think its really refreshing that we can go somewhere like Squiers that time hasn't changed! Two additional things of note: all around the walls were hand knitted or crocheted items for sale everything from blankets and teddies to handbags and children's clothes! The prices were beyond reasonable and ALL proceeds go to Cancer Research. Amazing! The only real negative of our trip to Squiers is the toilet - it's up a very steep flight of stairs which meant none of the three of us were able to use it. Because I'm disabled and do my reviews with accessibility in mind I've had to knock one star off because of this, that's the only reason.

We went in for what was supposed to be a light lunch. We opted for soup and a roll as we know from previous experience that their bacon rolls are not great but the soup has always been good.We spoke to the waitress as we also know from previous experience that she is slow to take orders and can appear to forget about people. She took our order and we then waited and waited.Approximately half an hour after we had placed our order my husband asked her if they had forgotten about us.She said that the lady who does the cooking had been really busy.As if serving 8 meals in 40 mins is busy for two staff -albeit the waitress does seem to potter around doing very little sometimes. Our soup could have been served in 5 mins. We waited another 5 mins and then decided to leave as we would not have time to eat it and get back to our grandson's pre school in time to collect him. The waitress was not really apologetic but the lady at the front of the shop was.We have been in this tea room many times since moving to the area 10 years ago but this was the last time we will go there. In the past they have been slow, but never this bad.The couple who came in just after us waited approximately 25 mins to place their order. As this place has very limited seating and they only had about 14 people in in total they were not exactly rushed off their feet.It is a shame because this place is in a very good location. Picked this place out of availability as the cafes on the high street were all very busy. Only 1 table of 4 customers inside was perhaps a sign of the quality? Left sitting at table for what seemed an age before having to approach a member of staff to take our order. We accepted her apology and ordered a bacon roll each and a pot of tea - the rolls arrived within 1 minute and did not look great - the roll itself was from a Warburton multi-pack and the bacon was anemic as it had been microwaved (shudder). One piece of bacon per roll. Wow. Too stunned to complain, drank tea, nibbled a bit of the roll and then paid before slinking off. Shock turned to anger later hence this review.

You walk through the sweet/souvenirs to the tea room which is musty and dark with a curtained area separating the kitchen from the eating area. Stopped here for a cup of coffee, which was ok. However, we indulged and decided to treat ourselves to a Cornish pasty. It was heated in the microwave, which can be forgiven even though this made the pastry tough. What wasn't forgivable was the 'meat' in the pasty. I took one bite and it re-appeared on my plate hastily. The pasty was lamb and this was not written on the menu. I cannot eat lamb and would never had ordered it if I'd known this. My husband ate my share, but upon inspection the meat was mushy and no chunks of meat existed. It was a very poor example of a Cornish Pasty.

We couldn't fault this little gem we found in Southwold, so can't understand some reviewers making derogatory remarks about it. We pay an annual visit to the area, and really look forward to our day in Southwold - wouldn't think of choosing anywhere else to eat. This year as usual found us in Squiers and luckily there wasn't a queue of people waiting to eat, but we then discovered we were a little past the time they stop serving lunches. The charming serving lady checked and agreed to serve us 3 different meals for which we were most grateful. My plaice was the best I'd had since the previous year, my friend had the pie and my Husband the 'all day breakfast' - all absolutely delicious, and all for such a good price. More people came in for tea, bringing in dogs, and far from being 'unwanted guests' several diners and the staff were very attentive to them. Coming out through the sweet shop, my friend was looking for caramel sweets for a gift, and when none were just right, a decorative bag tied with ribbon containing individual caramels was made up for her, and most appreciated. Can't wait for our next visit next year.

This is a quirky and small cafe in the back of a sweet shop. There are only around 7 tables and it is quite cramped. There is knitwear hanging from the walls - if you want a cardigan for a new baby you'd get something unique here. There is also an extensive display of teapots - good for a game of eye spy while you wait for food. However, regarding the food, the menu seems to be stuck in the 70s, cheese and potato pie, pasty chips and beans, quiche, steak and kidney pie. These are typically £7 a head which is probably not bad for Southwold but not great quality or big portions. The quiche was "enthusiastically crisped" as they'd say on Masterchef, aka burnt. The sausages were of the pink and pasty, unchallenging variety. If you enjoyed your school dinners eat here.

I loved it here. It is very quirky and has a cosy atmosphere. The food is delicious and is what I would call proper English food. I must recommend the chicken pie! Even if you don't want lunch, they also have a range of cakes. The place is very clean and the staff are very friendly. I think I will be a regular visitor here.If you are looking for a place to eat or just want to have a cup of tea or coffee in Southwold this is where you need to go! :)

Nice setting, but drafty, wait to order, tea arrived ok latte took several minutes longer and was not a real latte. Another few minutes, two slices of cake arrived, another few minutes the scones arrived, without the cream and jam. Had to ask for the jam and cream, another few minutes wait and the jam and cream arrived. The food was ok, but how difficult is it to get the order right and it to all arrive at the same time

What a lovely little cafe/tearoom we all had a hot drink and a bite to eat. Bacon rolls and cheese scones! One of us wanted well done bacon and this was done to perfection. A good range of teas and coffees! Dog friendly and a nice sweet shop attached

Walking through the old-fashioned sweet shop to find this quaintly decorated little tearoom was a pleasant experience but sadly, the quality of the food was not. We were tempted by the homemade nut roast so both ordered it with vegetables. When it arrived it was steaming hot - just out of the microwave. The edges of the nut roast were hard (in the way that only over-microwaved food can be) and the vegetables (although generous in variety) were very overcooked and watery. The nut roast was grey/brown in colour and without flavour. We left most of it. When asked what we thought of the meal I gave the waitress my honest opinion; we asked for the bill, paid and left disappointed. The meal was not expensive (£20 with hot drinks) and maybe there is a market for bland, overcooked meals and maybe the homemade cakes were better but we didn't stay to find out. We shall not be returning.

Situated in the middle of Southwold. We are regular visitors to Squires. The restaurant is situated at the rear of a very 'old fashioned' English sweet shop...well worth a visit in itself. However, the food they serve is good English food, meat or fish and three veg. to just a bacon roll if you're looking for a lite bite. The staff are friendly and happy to answer questions. Prices are below average

This little cafe could be a gem but needs a lot of love. There is junk everywhere with lots of hand knits hung around the dining room for sale. A old gas fire sits in a lovely old fireplace, the furniture, crockery and cutlery is tired and tatty. the kitchen staff don't seem to realise that everything they say is overheard in the small dining area - we now know all their family issues; also saw one lady in the kitchen scraping the custard jug out with her finger and eating it. Very very dated but the saving grace is the Food for is good with generous portions.

Had lunch here today. Thought the little cafe at the back of the sweet shop was quaint and it was lovely and warm as the gas heater was on.The food was very good, I had potato and broccoli bake and my husband had scampi and chips both plates had a good portion of salad too.We ordered a coffee each which had a good flavour but wasn't very hot.The bill came to approx £20 which I thought was very reasonable.Would recommend.

We didn’t try their tea rooms but the little shop was a blast from the past! Great assortment of old fashioned sweets in jars, sticks of rock and fudge. We came away with lots of small, white paper bags containing quarter pounds of sweets we recall from our childhood.

The cream tea had lots of jam and whipped not clotted cream. Scones were excellent but the coffee came with those disgusting plastic pots of stuff. When we asked for a jug of milk the waitress happily brought it but if you do not ask you are stuck with horrible rubbish

At the back of a sweetshop, this is a small café in one room, and is a bit short of space. I wanted a sandwich and coffee, the coffee was muddy and didn't taste fresh and there were no sandwiches. I had a "Cornish pastie" which was very dull. I believe that they can do better, but the staff did not seem to care.

We stopped off here for a bite to eat after shopping in Southwold. All cheap and cheerful, can recommend the cream tea but otherwise disappointing. Coffee was stewed and my husband's order for a bacon roll was forgotten - had to ask again. It wasn't brilliant either when he eventually got it, bacon was undercooked. The cakes and scones were good.

Good find, however, £2 for half a pint of milk for a 4 year old was too much, not offered a child portion for breakfast and the food was piled onto small plates. That said, all was cooked very well.

We decided to go for a cream tea and came across this small cafe/restaurant in high street to rear of shop. It looked like a pleasant spot and there were cream teas on the menu.We ordered and then waited for our tea to arrive.Once it arrived we were disappointed with the cream tea. The tea was fine but rest well short of the mark. The scones were definitely not home made as stated and looked exactly like the ones the co-op over the road sell in packs for about a pound. The cream was runny certainly not clotted or fresh.I can only assume they had run out of their traditional home baked scones referred to on menu and in other people's posts.Anyhow that scores about 2 in our tour of Norfolk and Suffolk cream teas and only because of location and cuppa.

A delightful little place behind a sweet shop. Seemed very busy at lunchtime. Friendly staff and the meals looked and smelt good. We just had coffee and I had a tea cake.

Popped in for lunch as most other places were full. After having our meal we were glad that the other places were full! My wife had lamb chops and they turned up with mashed potato, 6 veggies and the extra gravy that she had requested. As far as we were concerned the staff were excellent and the time taken for the food to arrive is because it is freshly cooked to order. Its not fancy cooking but it is good old fashioned home cooking.

Squiers is a very quaint old-fashioned sweet shop in the Main Street of Southwold. However it also has a very cosy tearoom behind. The service was adequate but spoiled somewhat by female teenage staff who quite obviously, and perhaps understandably, looked as though they would much rather be just about anywhere else's! The very excellent scones with the cream tea were only spoiled by a lack of clotted cream in favour of ? aerosol whipped cream.

Only popped in for a cup of tea but got seduced by the cream tea on offer. 2 warm fruit scones each, served with butter, jam and whipped cream. We thoroughly enjoyed it and treated ourselves to some sweets from the huge selection in the shop as we left. You go through the sweet shop to get to the tea shop which is at the back. Tea shop closes at 4pm at this time of year though.

We visited The Crown for a midweek lunch. We had our dog with us so didn’t want the formal dining room. The tables at the front were busy so we found a cosy snug at the back which was almost empty. We had a catch of the day fish and chips, complete with excellent crunchy chips and a smoked fish platter, also very nice. As expected, the full range of Adnams beers were available and in excellent condition. However, what we must really commend The Crown on was the attentive staff. Nothing was too much trouble for them. For example, I asked the barman if there was any water bowls for dogs outside? No need to go outside he replied and dropped what he was doing and brought one to our table. We will definitely return when we ext visit Southwold.

6 of us dropped in for a drink after the cinema at 22.05 today . Totally deserted except for one customer at the bar. Waited over 5 minutes before the customer offered to find the bar staff. Empty glasses on bar and tables so obviously work to do but no staff. Young lady eventually appeared and promptly said we've finished serving. No apology. I am amazed bars can afford to turn away 6 customers let alone without an apology. Also strange on 2nd July to read Christmas menus displayed around the walls. No idea if these are very early for this year or left up from last year? I've worked in hospitality much of my life and the golden rule is 'never turn away a paying customer' Unfortunately a no stars review wasn't an option. Very disappointing.

Had to wait 3/4 of hour for a breakfast. No mugs available. Staff clearing trays away handing dirty crockery and table numbers then going to food counter to touch people's plates without cleaning hands first.food left on serving counter for ages before being brought out, people then sending it back because it was then cold as ours was,not as good as it used to be

Ok a 2 hour wait is totally unacceptable! On ordering I was told that delivery would be an hour, so ok great know, they’re busy, but happy they had told me this. After hour and half called and told , oh yeah your order is here on table, will be there in 5 minutes……….after the initial call, 2 hours later our order arrived, I think a free dessert would have been a great gesture. Our food was delicious though, roast dinner and a burger were tasty but this 2 hour wait needs addressing!
