We visited on 24th October. It was a reasonable day regarding the weather and Stourhead was busy. We called into the Spread Eagle at about 1.30pm. Positives - we got a table inside. It had been cleared but was sticky. Negatives- no vegetarian sandwiches on the menu. But to be fair I was offered ham cheese and chutney without the ham. My friend selected carrot and coriander soup. Both meals were awful. The soup was so diluted that it was tasteless. My brown bread was tasteless as was the awful processed cheese slice (who still uses these abominations?). Only the chutney had flavour. Final negative was that I was chased out of the pub and accused of not paying. I explained exactly how I had paid only to be greeted with a shrug and “ok I believe you” - like she didn’t! And on top of that they dare to add 10% service charge.

Had a table booked for 2:00, we were early so had a drink in the bar whilst waiting for our table. 2:00pm came my Husband asked the girl if our table was ready, she looked confused so he said our name and time she checked and said it was still being used, was going to find us a a different table then decided we could eat in the bar at the table we had been at for the last 20mins! Why didn’t she suggest that to begin with?? We ordered roast beef, wasn’t asked how we liked it so assumed it would be medium cooked, one piece was the other two slightly on the pinker side and didn’t taste of a quality meat. Only one spindly parsnip, no crunch to the roast potatoes, one spoon of cauliflower cheese for both of us and all a bit bland. Overall disappointing will stick to just stopping for a drink in future.

Delicious. We called for lunch hoping to find something my husband could eat - finding something gluten free with no onions can be tricky. We sat in a quiet part of the restaurant and enjoyed a delicious lunch. My maize based Mediterranean tart with vegetables was very tasty too. 3 happy customers ! Definitely recommend this place. Staff and chef couldn’t have been more helpful.

We arrived at a very busy time on the Bank Holidy Sunday, fearing there would be little hope of getting a table. We were warmly welcomed & taken to a table quickly. The menu offered a wide range & I was spoilt for choice. I chose a pulled pork rascal with accompaniments which was really tasty! My son was equally pleased with his steak & ale "proper" pie. Usually i don't have pudding & indeed was rather full, but we were both tempted by the various puddings on the menu & glad we were. Those we chose were delicious. The service was excellent, as was the food, and it was good value for money. An all round excellent experience.

This pub is on the doorstep of Stourhead (National Trust) and they clearly doesn't see any need to build up a relationship with the customers. Thank goodness, we only wanted sandwiches so didn't subject ourselves to greater expense and disappointment. The ham was fatty, mustard dumped on the bread in splodges, the caramelised onions were undercooked. The salad was uninteresting and sparse.

Lunch indoors as garden area full ...big soulless room at back sadly lacking in personality ....so much more could be made of this fine room! We lunched early but soon the room filled up. Service had very little interaction ....given menu ...paused took order ....cold. Food was indifferent ....all chucked into fryer and placed on plate. It is difficult for these places to get menu balance right as many coach parties pass through having visited the NT splendid gardens ...quite something so much so wished we had taken a picnic! Somehow they need to simplify the menu avoiding sit down two course meals ....more open sandwiches and light salads prepared with flair! May not be as efficient as using fryer but more in keeping with location if they went “local” and added things from the house walled gardens ...be different ....you deserve to be more than a so so roadside pub! Finally put some character into the service delivery ....echo the property and its history!

Great pub, location, building and staff. But the food is overpriced and like you'd expect in the 90s (frozen chips etc). The nail in the coffin was the difference between my steak and my wife's. Mine was grey and hers looked very nice, bur she couldn't chew through hers! We ate what we could as the minute steak on ciabatta was £12.50 each, and we'd been walking all day so were famished! We'll be eating at the national trust café in future.

Wonderful setting - the grounds are amazing - the staff were very pleasant - the food was .... well, simply dreadful - mushroom starter, undercooked, hard, chewy, close to tasteless mushrooms - main course of duck looked wonderful - I've never actually tried chewing a bicycle tyre, so I can only guess at the similarity - inedible. - add to that, I grew a beard waiting between courses and it was a thoroughly expensive and quite frankly unpleasant experience - not one I shall be repeating......

This pub is just outside the entrance to Stourhead Gardens. It is owned by the National Trust and could be an appalling tourist trap but I was actually pleasantly surprised when I ate there recently. The welcome was very warm and the staff friendly. A fire was roaring in the bar area, and there was a good menu with lots of choice. It was a tad expensive but then this is in a prime location. I had the ploughman’s and it was good size with plenty to eat, although I would have preferred different bread. The crumble was very good and just what was needed after a long walk! Nice setting and great if you're walking around the NT place for sure but don't get excited by the eating experience as it doesn't match what it could be. The sunday lunch was not bad ; all hot and reasonably cooked.,... but no wow factor to it. The seating area is a bit noisy and has a bit of a old school dinners feel to it. The service was lacking on a sunday, young girls mainly interested in chatting rather than serving. Price wise it was fair but I'd probably not eat here again if I could find somewhere better nearby.

After looking at the reviews for the Sunday Roast dinners at this pub I was dubious as to the quality and had a back up plan at the ready, however I was pleasantly surprised. Roast beef, homemade Yorkshire pudding, plenty of crispy roast potatoes, large selection of freshly steamed vegetables (Not over cooked or soggy)gravy and horseradish. I couldn't have made it better myself and all for the value price of £10.95! The roaring open fire was also very welcome after a long soggy walk around the Stourhead estate in the pouring rain...grand job!

We had the moules , with chips, for lunch. About 20% of the mussels had broken shells. Lots of pieces of shell in the wine and cream too. Not nice, in fact risky to et them in that condition, so I believe. Also, most recipes start with finely chopped shallots, or if they do use onion, they say soften in butter over fierce heat. Here, the chef (?) used big lumps of onion which were quite raw in the dish as presented.

Having known there is a pub just before the lovely setting of stourhead, we decided to stop there for a bite to eat before a walk. We both picked soup with croutons, and I said how much I was looking forward to dunking the bread in the soup as it was a cold and rainy day, to be told it's just soup and croutons. We were surprised as for £7.50 that sounded quite expensive but the waitress said she would see what she could do. The reason given was it's chef's time restrictions, but we ordered some chips at £3.25 a bowl, hoping he had time to do those if not butter some bread.

Despite having a large captive audience of visitors to the gardens it still delivers well. It was a warm day and function room and restaurant full but they still managed to serve bar and courtyard guests promptly and attentively. Sandwiches not the cheapest but very well filled and on gorgeous bread. The ham is great though the Lemon chicken had a bit too much Mayo ( thus making it four not five stars). These generous doorsteps were served with lovely crisps, nice fresh salad garnish and quality wine and local beer!

Lunched here last week, a few years after our last visit. The restaurant was very busy and seemed to have some temporary or holiday staff. Our prawn starter wasn't as tasty as expected from the menu description. We waited rather a long time for our mains and the ham, egg and chips, although tasty, was rather pricey. My bass fillets were slightly overcooked for my taste and the minted pea puree was so minty and sweet as to be almost inedible and from the colour looked as though it was made from tinned processed peas. The cherry and chocolate cheesecake with raspberry sorbet saved the day and was delicious. Maybe it is best to visit out of season.

After visiting Stourhead House and Gardens had lunch here, the pub/hotel is set in a very pretty small valley on a quite road. The prawn and crayfish cocktail would have been better if it had been served with some ordinary brown bread rather than the dry thin things it came with, which were something like Melba toast. Had the Fish and Chips for the main, the waitress did inform me that the fish was battered sea bass, I thought the bass itself was excellent but the batter idea did not really work and the skin had been left on, which would have been fine if it wasn’t battered, it would have been better without the batter.

Just returned from a night away at the Spread Eagle at Stourhead. Very comfortable room (6ft bed) with all necessary facilities for an enjoyable stay. Excellent, locally sourced steak at dinner. Great rates at this time of year!

A fine country Pub, set in a historic old Country Estate now National Trust cared for, The pub has a warm and welcoming feel, some hidden away dinning rooms and serves great quality food after a pleasant wander of the Stourhead gardens and Lake area a must visit.

.... which doesn't say much for the restaurant. The place was busy but the waitresses were brusque; the starter was cleared away before one of our party (of four) had put his spoon down; the fish pie arrived without the peas and when the main course (best described as OK) was cleared away, it was clear we had exceeded our allotted time at the table - no offer of another drink or asked about a dessert. The best part about this place is the proximity to the entrance to Stourhead Gardens - the only reason to eat here.

Reasonable sandwich lunch and pint, although there was inadequate seating indoors to accommodate the hoards of visitors on a nice October day. Swift and pleasant service as the plates were already made up.

Absolutely dreadful! Advertised a la carte menu replaced with a 'bar' menu. Took the waiter 15 minutes to bring a menu and ask if we'd like drinks 40 minutes for food to arrive which was not hot. The pork belly my colleague had was wrapped in gooey fat not crackling, the pumpkin sauce was a teaspoon of orange 'something' and the seasonal veg was mashed potato and some peas. The chicken burger was deep fried and tasted of old fryer fat as did the 'tepid' skin in chips. Presentation of the burger was non existent and the two tiny leaves of lettuce were brown. This was fed back to the waiter when he finally returned to our table his response was he'd mention it to the Chef. The after dinner treat of sticky toffee pudding was solid and rubbery, not moist. The tiniest bit of ice cream and a token gesture at the sauce all was tepid. The dining room was cold and drafty. The decor tired and wall paper peeling off the ceiling and walls. Utterly awful experience with nobody interested in the overall shoddiness of the service and food. Really disappointing, especially as this is the closest hotel to work. A real missed opportunity for this Hotel and Restaurant.

Very good lunch, busy but were found a table quickly. Staff we dealt with were all excellent, special thanks to Amelia who recommended the BBQ chicken with sweet potato fries and coleslaw. Will be another addition to our favourite lunch spots..
