Very warm welcome, matched by excellent all day breakfast ( for both of us). A very relaxed cafe, with superb cakes, and pasteries to go. A pleasure to eat in this friendly, and very clean cafe, with a very good selection. A nice change to the corporate cafes.

I ordered 2 ham and tomato sandwiches and 2 coffees from an unwelcoming man. Not very smiley and quite serious looking. The wait wasn't very long, as not very busy. The sandwiches were presented very nicely with salad and cheap doritos crisps. Unfortunately the bread had margarine instead of butter and processed packet ham. It would have been better if I had butter and deli ham. The amount of money I paid, they would have still made a profit. What is it with cafes now adays, you either get margarine or no spread now, when has this been acceptable?! I requested salad cread and the bottle of salad cream had brown sauce around the lid and nearly empty. Wouldn't have had it anyway. It was also a cheap brand. We had a small pot of mayonnaise instead from a very nice waitress. The floor where I sat was dirty. I guess It was because I cleared my table before I sat down, so the waitress may not have been aware. I won't be back, as I didnt feel welcolmed plus If i go out for a sandwich, i expect decent ham and it has to be butter!

Ordered full English. Two burnt precooked sausages were put on a plate whilst the rest was cooked. Asked waitress if they were mine as I didn’t want them. She said no. Lo and behold 5 minutes later I was presented with burnt sausages. Told waitress I didn’t want them. Cook grudgingly cooked new sausages. When I cut into them they were raw. Absolutely dreadful way to run a business.

Today we went to Chichester to have a look around. Stopped for lunch at Spires. As we entered the coffee shop, we were quick to find out the outrageous prices shown along the wall. We were able to find a table in the corner of the room, ordered a cappuccino, a Diet Coke, two sausage rolls and a tuna melt panini only to find out the bill came to a whopping £20! We asked for an extra glass (which they later forget about) and when the food arrived, we weren’t exactly satisfied. The sausage rolls shattered when we tried to cut them and the staff didn’t ask us if we wanted any sauce or salt and pepper. We were short of some cutlery and napkins as well. Overall not the best place to go for food or service. Good cappuccino though.

There was not a lot of choice in Chichester, and this was one of the few places which we thought looked reasonable. THe indoor cafe area is very small, but we found a table and ordered lunch. Heading for a real eating breakfast, but stopped thinking to give a smaller business a try. Although almost empty, two breakfasts took ages to arrive. Really slow, but friendly enough service. Bacon and sausage were really terrible, horrid food. All ingredients tasted cheap. Costing just under £20. Both of us realised on leaving, that our clothes smelt because of the frying. Expectations weren't incredibly high, but this was the worst breakfast I've probably ever had, and for some years was eating in road house cafes all over the place.

I work in Chichester on Saturdays at a charity shop and my friends came to visit me and we spent lunch together. As it was'Gin in the Park' event in Priory park we couldn't use the tearooms there. I have purchased sandwiches here before and they are good quality, freshly made. We were a table of six and we managed to sit inside which is a bonus. One of my friends is disabled and has a walker, it was difficult to put the walker somewhere as the staff kept saying we could sit at that table but people need to be able to access the toilet in the corner, I do understand that but also have some consideration that we are all now squashing ourselves on a table and having to collapse my friends walker to allow room for others. We all had a selection of quiches, sandwiches and toasties and very reasonable prices.

I decided to try somewhere different for lunch and chose Spires Bakery & Coffee Shop - bad decision! I ordered a cheddar cheese sandwich on brown bread with spring onions and a coffee. I handed over just under £7 for this delightful dish (not). The coffee arrived and tasted very nice. The sandwich which followed was unrecognizable. It looked like someone had opened a tin of sandwich spread and stuck some lettuce in there. I honestly thought I had the wrong order but was told by a male member of staff it was the right order. Although he said he would change it I felt that due to his aggressive attitude/demeanour, I should try to eat it first. I couldn't eat it. I made my opinion known before leaving and another male member offered a refund which I declined (I know, another mistake) as all I wanted to do was leave. The whole experience was disgusting and overpriced. Needless to say I shall not be going back there. Their customer service sucks.

I love coming here for a full English with my girlfriend when she’s in town. Has something of a “greasy spoon” feel, but that’s one of the things I ADORE about it. Chichester can be a bit stiff sometimes, but I’m from the North, where the greasy spoon is king, so the vibe that Spires has is something that the city needs and should treasure. The service is friendly and efficient, and the food is reasonably priced and made to order. Highly recommended!

Inedible!1 × pickled onion..soft ! Cheap over cooked baguette , cheap pickle and tiny handful of salad ! £5.95All day breakfast , all pre cooked and warmed again apart from the free range eggs, which were the best part ! The scone arrived cut in half and slightly warm (clearly the results of a microwave). It was hard and tasteless. I also struggled to find any fruit that qualified it as described. We made for this simple, slightly hidden bakery and coffee shop in search of a quick lunch. There were no customers in the place itself when we arrived and so had the place to ourselves to find the best place to sit down and chat with the staff behind the counter. Fortunately some freshly baked Cornish pasties were coming out of the oven so we chose to have those with three large cups of hot chocolate. They were delicious and reasonably priced. As we rested our weary legs I noticed that they were also offering bacon baps. So I also ordered on of those. The white, floury bap was so soft with plenty of bacon to satisfy that mid day hunger...What I liked was the nice combination of non pretentious food served with a smile at reasonable prices. Certainly a place to remember for when I come back to Chichester town centre.

We were in Chichester this morning looking for somewhere to have breakfast. We stumbled upon this down a side street an figured it might be pretty good. We were wrong. 3 of us sat down at the table which really was too small for any more than 2 people and ordered our breakfast. I wanted the all day breakfast but I wanted to replace the beans with hash browns because I really don't like beans. The staff were un-obliging and I still had a large plate of beans and they added 75p on for the hash browns. Once i started eating my breakfast, the taste of baked beans coated everything. The food was average for the most part but the sausages were pretty good. Once I got to my egg, it was quite cold and to top it off it had a hair in it!!! To conclude, The staff were unwilling to make a minor change to their breakfast, the tables were extremely small, the decor was old and cheap, the service was very poor and there was a hair in my food. The only plus side was the average food and tasty sausages.

It's a guilty pleasure. I know it's not good for me, but if I'm in Chichester at lunchtime I have to go to Spires for a bacon and bubble & squeak bap (wholemeal of course!). I don't think anywhere else in Chichester does bubble & squeak and I seldom see it elsewhere on my travels - it's a little bit of history. Other people around me were clearly enjoying a range of other things on the menu - you don't have to have the refried spuds and cabbage!Spires is quite small - about 18 covers, plus some outside as you can see in the photo - and the tables are very close together. It's always been busy when I've been in there, justifiably so, giving it a quirky atmosphere. Staff are very friendly and helpful. Lunch for two - 2 x bacon and bubble & squeak baps and a pot of tea - £12. Bargain!

Went for breakfast this morning with my partner. Looking forward to a decent fry up as they seem to be the only place in chi that offers bubble and squeak. Unfortunately when the breakfast arrived the bacon was so overcooked it shattered as I tried to cut into it. The toast was basically warm bread. The beans where cold and sausages overcooked. No mushrooms on the menu and the bubble and squeak that we visited for actually tasted like rotten cabbage doused in vinegar. Such a pity as we had high expectations 15 pounds for two coffees and two breakfasts. Not worth it at all.

A long overdue review. We are a US couple. We were in Chichester Nov. 2015 to visit the Cathedral. Popped into Spires actually simply to get change for the Pay and Display car park. Bought 6 shortbread cookies to get change. As we walked and ate we both stopped in our tracks, looked at each other and did a simultaneous OMG! Light, melt in your mouth, buttery without being thick or gooey. A cookie equivalent of a very fine wine. Subtle but oh so complex. We've tried to find a repeat here in the States but none have even come close. Would we'd known when we bought the handful, thinking them just a means to our car park change end. We'd have bought the lot! Simply outstanding.

Chichester is not lacking in cafes but Spires is worth seeking out. There is outside seating for the warmer days and some inside seating. All the food is prepared in-house (try their home made soups - delicious) and the sandwiches are well filled with a huge choice. The staff are a delight and once you have the pleasure of being remembered, they bring your tea and coffee just the way you like it without being reminded (brown sugar for the tea and a mug for the cappuchino). Breakfast is a real treat and you won't need to eat again for some time afterwards. This is a comfortable, caring, enjoyable cafe that deserves all the accolades it receives.

I must say that this is definitely the place to come for lunchtime sandwiches; the quality is excellent and the coffee is good. It is slightly dated, but I think that's part of the charm! Despite the staff being frequently very busy - it's both popular and small - everything's made to order and neatly presented. It's a little above average in price for its type but, definitely worth it.

I stopped here for breakfast with a friend. and really enjoyed it. They have a limited breakfast menu, but with innovative options, which is why we chose to eat here. The breakfast was served quickly, was very tasty and very reasonably priced. I also got a take-away pastry as it looked so good, and tasted even better. Really good little spot and worth seeking out.

It doesn't matter what time of day you visit Spires Bakery you receive a warm welcome. Nearly all the food is home made (ask for one of Steve's breakfasts - you won't be disappointed) with their soups a particular delight. Coffee is first rate - some lovely coffee art for special customers is fun. Outside seating under an awning. Ditch the chain outlets and visit a proper café.

The Spires is located on a side street and you need a street map to find it.We were a group of 3 grumpy old men, arriving mid morning on a sunny day and opted to sit outside continental style, on arrival the staff were friendly, the menu choice was extensive we decided on coffee`s and a breakfast, the staff were attentive and efficient. We will definitely return next time we are in Chichester.

We have been visiting Spires for many years, a good place to rest your feet when you are shopping. Very friendly and very helpful. The coffee is great as well as the bakery especially their cheese straws and cheese scones we always try to buy some when we visit. Long may they carry on running this excellent independent cafe.Congratulations on your 10th Anniversary.

I have visited this little café lots of time before and always found it good value for money but this was the first visit since they had decorated and I was very disappointed today with the quality of the meal. We went for the specials of the day - homemade goat's cheese quiche, salad and coleslaw and my husband had the bacon and egg pie and jacket (Both £5.50) Frankly, the first thing that struck me when the meals were delivered was "Is that it - I don't remember ordering a children's meal?". The quiche was a very small portion and my husband's portion of pie was even smaller, although he said it was tasty. My quiche was edible enough although a little bland. My side salad in my opinion would fail under trade description - more like a garnish - about half a leaf of iceberg finely chopped, one thin SLICE of tomato cut in half and a few slivers of carrot. The homemade coleslaw was the best bit and a reasonable serving. My husband gave me his jacket as he didn't really want it. This was very overcooked - looked like it had been reheated and was burnt in places so not appetising at all. At a nearby table a family had ordered the breakfast. I couldn't help noticing that when one young lad cut into his bacon it shot off the plate as it was so overcooked. This is a really good bakery and I would certainly continue to buy bakery products here. It used to be a good place to eat but to be honest I am going to think twice about eating here in the future. If they cannot afford to provide a reasonable portion size maybe they need to think twice about offering meals and stick to snacks and drinks.

I visit this very friendly cafe on a regular basis and always have their bubble and squeak with bacon and sausage in a beautifully crisp roll. If I leave it too long I get withdrawal symptons!!! Excellent choice of food at very reasonable prices. The staff are delightful and very welcoming. Happy birthday and here's to another successful ten years. Janet in Chichester

The home made food really is tasty and quite different so you should find it interesting. A nice cafe to supplement a visit to Westdean gardens next door. Nice big pot of tea thank you. You can enjoy the garden out the back if the weather lets you.

Although they’ve faced a few days of closure it doesn’t take away from the brilliance of the food they serve, food was done beautifully and the burgers cooked very well. Generous portion sizes and very very thick and tasty milkshakes I will definitely be returning. Also to note the tables and kitchen are kept quite clean and there was wasn’t much mess on the floor round the crowded tables which is a good sign the place is being looked after well.
