Spice World in Argyll & Bute

We decided to have dinner here as we had eaten here before a few years ago and it was good. However this time was not good. We asked if they had a table and they sat us by the window, the restaurant was not busy at all, there were plenty empty tables. When our food came out it looked ok but on tasting it, it was very bland, totally lacking in flavour and the chicken in my jalfrezi was possibly the worse meat I had tasted, I practically left it all. My husband said that his was just as bad. The best thing about the meal was the nan bread. If that wasn’t bad enough, one of the staff then came over and said ‘If you could leave once you finish your drinks, we need the table’ How rude! As I said the place was practically empty and we hadn’t asked to be seated there. This place has went right down hill since our last visit, it looks tatty and tired and in need of a refurb. We will not be back.

Went with my wife on 22nd October 24. We were a few minutes early but where promptly sat at an amazing window. After about 2 minutes a waiter offered us a drink and after about 6 minutes our order was taken. Our food came quickly and hot, also it was amazing. As someone who was in Hospitality for 27 years, I don't get the bad reviews. I would highly recommend. Our only downside was when we asked to take our, massive amount, of leftovers home. My wife was given empty tubs and had to fill them herself. Really?....only downside. Get that sorted.

Excellent food, good service and good value for money. They’re open throughout the year which is a bonus. My regular every time I’m up in Oban. Well done guys! My second visit, cannot fault the food I had; asked for less spicy and got exactly what I asked for!!

Spice World was so tasty we ate there twice in two days!! My partner and I had 4 vegan main options between us across two visits and they were all delicious. The rest of the menu looked great for non-vegans. The service was great and I think the price was very reasonable for very solid portions and excellent flavours.

Restaurant caters for Indian, Chinese and Thai food. We had Indian and was acceptable quality and taste. Price was acceptable.

Staff seem rude. Szechuan hot and sour soup was sweet and almost undrinkable/uneatable, the honey prawn was average, good curry.

Food was inedible, we had a phone call about them nothing having any oil in so they couldn’t make the soup I wanted, so they did a seafood replacement, the seafood was clearly from a bag if of sea food mix from farm foods, I’ve ordered food from here years ago and it was bad back then, my thought was oh it’s been years since then and maybe they’ll have it together, overly priced and just awful.. Pad Tai was meant to be with Lamb, I can tell the difference between lamb and pork and it just wasn’t pad tai, who puts a big chunk of lemon onto pad tai… that’s all I’m going to say about it, if I could swear in this review I would

Best Indian food I've had in oban

Disclaimer: We didn't get to eat any food at the venue, hence I have given an average 'Okay' rating. Story: Me and my family member, total 7 people along with two young kids travelled to Oban from Glasgow with the plan to have lunch at Spice World. We looked at their menu online which showed plenty of vegetarian options which included Thai and Indian dishes. The restaurant so stated that they open at midday for lunch service. We parked our cars and headed to Spice World around 1210 pm. We were stopped at the entrance by a staff member who quite rudely informed that they are not yet open. mind you, their main entrance was open with a sign stating they open at 1200 for their Sunday buffet. The staff member then informs us that they were busy the previous night so they wont be serving lunch until after 1pm. Okay so we waiting outside for about 40mins and now the kids are getting really hungry. About 1245 we make our way to the restaurant again and they let us in, showing us to the table. They then gave us the menu which showed two buffet options. Now all of us are vegetarians and the buffet option which had vegetarian options (right option in the attached menu photo) was not available that day, again, as they were 'too busy' the night before. This wasn't advised to us earlier nor was it on their website. After being disappointed earlier and now frustrated about the lack of any regard for their customers, we left the restaurant and made our way to the pizza place near the water front. The staff did not apologise nor did they offer vegetarian options for the buffet. They almost seemed to be relieved that we left. The venue is located at a convenient location and has a few tables with water views. Interior is quite okay with visibly uncleaned, stained and smelly carpet near the entrance.

Can't fault the service or the food. Both excellent

I've enjoyed lunch twice here in the past year, and found it very tasty. No issues at all. Great view out over the bay too. The 'three course' meal deal portions are a little small compared to a typical dine-in curry dinner, but for the price that's fine, and leaves me satisfied as opposed to stuffed. It's really 2 courses, as the menu offers a starter, main, and choice of rice or naan as the third 'course'. The naans are delicious, soft and fresh. It's definitely a go-to for lunch when I want something a bit richer than a cafe menu.

Place and food is decent, but the service by manager felt too rude for us.

Food was nice and warm .staff was okay seem to spend time arguing with each other. Elder gentleman could do with smiling as he seems unapproachable he also takes things off table before you've finished

Restaurant has v Dine in or take away + view across Oban harbour. Great at sunset. Has Thai, Chinese, Indian, Bangladesh food. Terrific if you want a bit of variety.

We were in on Saturday evening in a large group, between us all we ordered a variety of food of the menu, it was all delicious, we will definitely be back .

My husband and I went in at 5pm shown straight to a table drinks order taken after 10 minutes food order taken after 30 minutes although there were only 2 sets of 2 customers couldn't help overhearing a waiter being quite abrupt with a customer asking for another drink the food was nice and will eat there again but feel the staff should take lessons in customer service

My husband and I had booked a 3 day visit to oban. On our first night there we decided to eat in this restaurant. It was to be the worst decision we made as both of us had food poisoning for the rest of our break and spent it in the hotel. We had lamb bhuna and chicken korma both with fried rice. It completely spoiled what was supposed to be a lovely relaxing weekend. We are now home and both of us are still unwell. If you are considering going here keeping walking

Got a take away. Staff where very welcoming . The food was amazing. The taste of the curries was superb as was the naan bread and baji. We eat Indian food a lot and the food for taste and quality is definitely 5 stars. You get lots of chicken. Would come back and dine in next time as the place itself is beautiful inside. Well decorated and reflected where you are . Thank you for a fabulous meal.

Mixed Raitia is just 2 spoons of unseasoned, unmixed skimmed milk yogurt with 4 really small onion strips and 3 even smaller strips from a cucumber slice (= not even half a 1.5 mm thick cucumber slice). Taste = impossible. The price for it too. Never again !!!!!!!!!

First of all I wish If I could give negative rating for this restaurant.The staff were very rude and don’t even know how to talk to women and treat them. They were literally abusing the moment we started ordering them and when asked the reason why they were rude the barrer said that”the other competitor restaurant was full and don’t have space to order and be thankful that we are at least giving you some space”. The other staff watched all the drama and started yelling at us despite being apologetic.I have never experienced such a pathetic,manner less restaurant in the world. Rude No manners No customer centric approach and treating them as beggars

Ok the table was sticky and the room could do with a face lift however our food was great, hot and tasty. We are from the midlands and know a good curry. The service was good especially the young chap from London. Prices were good for restaurants in the same area and we would definitely go again

Meal really hit the spot. We ordered garlic naan (truly 5/5 naan), rice, lamb tikka palak (fine), balti king prawn jalfrezi (recommend!), and vegetable samosas (good). We tried to stick to things that had spice and it worked out well for us. We were exhausted after a day of travel and were delighted to experience a beautiful sunset over the bay with some solid Indian food. Service was good and food came out fast. I felt like I needed to review because the other reviews made me nervous and I almost did not go.

I really liked that place! From the outside it kind of looked...not like a nice place, but once you enter the actual restaurant it is an okay good spot to be (just the ambience, I mean). The service was amazing though and the food was just delicious! I am really thinking about going back just tomorrow...

It pains me to say it, but this was one of the worst dining experiences we have ever had. Sat for 20 mins without even a menu let alone a drink, wife's food was ok but my meat had bones in it and thr lamb was like leather, and I had to take the bill to the bar because no one came to take payment despite the fact the place was empty by then. And not once did anyone apologise for any of it.

On entering the building we were shown to our table, tired decor tired menus and in the next table tired customers who were waiting to be attended to. I ordered what I thought was a dish that could not be ruined, Chicken Tikka Massala, I was wrong, it was simply dreadful bland beyond bland and the Mushroom rice faired little better. Of the 5 of us, 2 were OK with their meals, and what of the tired customers on the next table…. They left unhappy and without been served, they don’t know how fortunate they were…..

My Lamb Dopiaza was fine, but friends Chicken Tikka Masala was very disappointing, bland chicken & sauce. Choice of beers was very limited & no cold coke for non drinkers. Service was not the best on this evening either. We were told it had been “busy”. Not recommended.

Avoid at all costs. Trust me, staying hungry is a better option. The wait for our food was around 45 minutes. I understand this can be because the place is busy. But the waiter act as if they are going you a favor. It even took nearly 10 minutes for someone to give us a menu. The chicken Madras tasted like someone had sprinkled chilli powder on to tomato paste - it was like biting into a chilli powder slurry. The chicken biryani was borderline inedible. And worst of all, I felt the effects of the food through the next day with multiple bathroom visits.

30 of us decendended on Spice world. Staff were pleasant enough just one of them was a bit short when asked questions like it was a hassle. Food was OK. I ordered bombay chicken and it wasn't very nice at all. Peshawar naan was lovely though

Went here cos only place open at 8.45. Food was very bland and uninspiring. 4 cuisines in one place is a sign of scatter gun. The naan was excellent tho. Marked down as Palace was quiet and had loud drunks swearing in corner. When waiter picked up dishes he spilt food on table instead of cleaning it up he just gave us hand wipes leaving the table covered in sauce. Would not go back.

Not value for money, wouldn't go there again. Biriyanie dry and lamb biriyani were mixed small parts of chicken.

My meal was disappointing to say the least, this is our second time trying never again, my curry was chicken in watery sauce, my husband's lamb was tough, we asked for the bill and he said it was cash only, forty pounds for a very poor meal I hate sea side towns that get away with sub standard food because it's passing trade that,s why we need to give reviews to wipe this out.

Hate moaning about food. But really shocked by how bad it was this afternoon. Totally inedible, left almost everything we ordered, the thai green curry was particularly nasty, resembled a slimey pea soup with a really weird fishy after taste. Did mention it to the waiter as we paid up, just wantrd to get out as soon as possible tbh.

I ordered a stuffed vegetable paratha for a take away dinner whoever made this has spoiled my dinner. It was burnt completely as shown in the picture with minimal stuffing, not even considerable to eat. Highly disappointing, need to through it right away which made me more sad.

Disgusting. We were there with all the family 3 toddlers and were told they only had one high chair. Then were told they only had an Indian menu on . We waited over a hour to order then an hour for main courses to start coming out and they were all cold. We sent them back they then came back out few minutes later and one of my family members asked if he had microwaved this and he said yes . We all got up and just left terrible experience all the waiter did was laugh

Ordered Indian for take-out collection. Very nice curries, peshwari nan especially good, loads of ground almonds. For Oban excellent prices and value. Will order again when back next month.

Disgusting, after waiting over an hour for a main course, what we were served as a Chinese curry looked like dishwater with augergines and chilli's??? and chicken that looked like it had been boiled in water we didn't eat it. To be told that they had a new chef and that was the issue. Never again and I would avoid at all costs

Once again had a super meal. Great crew of people and very good food, Lamb Chops were wonderful, Dahl was as traditional as it should be, Achari was again very good and all served with a smile in a wonderful waterfront location.

Nice restaurant portion size small and little over priced

Really couldn't recommend more highly. The food is so delicious, varied, and authentic, the prices are right, the service quite gentlemanly, and the lovely lighting with harborside view divine.

I eat here fairly regularly on diving trips and while it isn't the best Indian restaurant in Scotland I've certainly eaten in worse. I can't comment on their Chinese food as I always order Indian but always found the food to be tasty and plentiful. Beer is a little pricey but the staff are friendly and we often get offered a free dram after our mea

Visited today with 2 friends. We were the only customers there. Arrived at 12.50 and were given special lunch menus describing both Indian and Chinese options. We were told by very polite waiter that only Indian version was available after one of us asked for a Chinese meal. We all ordered a starter and a main course. We had just started eating our starter when the main courses were brought to the table. They were cold by thetime we got round to eating them. Talk about feeling rushed, particularly when we were the only customers. Practically the minute we finished our main courses the bill was brought to our table. I think the chef wanted an early finish. To add insult to injury the waiter didn't even bring us our change back, it was only £3 odd but not right to just assume it was a tip We won't be back.

Very poor they advertise Chinese, Indian and Thai food but after sitting and selecting menu was told that they were only doing Indian food . Had to wait 30 minutes for our table in spite of booking . Service very slow and food was miserable .

Awful service, 3 hours for two courses, had to ask for the bill three times, food was average. Don’t bother wasting your precious time in Oban here.

Lovely Indian Restaurant in the center of Oban, Scotland. Excellent service combined with stellar food and you have Spice World. Definitely a place we'd come to again if back in Oban. I recommend the Butter Chicken with a Cheese Naan. Freaking fantastic.

Group booking for 8pm. A few tables had customers but they were far from full. 45 minutes before a waiter came to take the order. 45 minutes before we were told over half the menu was unavailable. Food then took over an hour to arrive. The manager offered no apology or seemed to care at how poor the service had been. The food was okay. Everything but the chef though means you should absolutely avoid and take your patron elsewhere. Based on other reviews this is clearly an ongoing issue so you have been warned.

Was absolutely terrible service was horrendous the guy never understood anything we said he took our order for food and drinks we waited 1 hour and a half just for drinks and nearly 2 for food and the food came look warm completely different from what I had order and the portion sizes were a joke wouldn’t even feed a toddler plates came dirty and had to be sent back as were the glasses, over all a terrible place WOULD NOT RECOMMEND TO ANYONE the toilets had no lock and were very dirty

Ordered a takeaway via the restaurants website during a recent stay in Oban. Fast and friendly service throughout, the food was delicious, can highly recommend the Dhansak. Noticed that the actual restaurant was very nicely decorated and comfortable whilst making the collection, I will definitely return for a sit down meal on my next visit.

Had a delicious Naga Chicken here! Really tasty. Staff were great. Don’t understand the negative reviews… ignore them. Most have clearly never been to a remote Scottish town before!
