So placed a order online. Adhering to the covid rules, Got the meal a lamb balti a Ceylon garlic chilli chicken, garlic rice, mushroom rice a garlic naan, and chapatis, well what can I say, the lamb was so tuff it was impossible to eat, there was no mushrooms in the rice, there was no chilli in the garlic chilli chicken. The naan was undercooked and raw in the middle. The chapatis where rock hard. We phoned the restaurant to complain but the manager was incredibly rude, kept talking over me when I was explaining the problems, we spent £44 pound on a treat, but was badly let down. I will be taking this to the trading standards as I do not want anyone to spend their hard earned money on food that is substandard. The customer is always right and should be allowed to express when things are not as they should be. So be warned. I will be sharing this on Twitter, Instagram and all local social media platforms.

We have used this restaurant for the last 5 years and up until recently have been very happy. last week we placed a sizeable order (over £50) and after practically having to guide the driver, turn by turn, we recieved our order over an hour after the eta, given to us by the restaurant. The food was cold, and 2 of the meals were inedible due to the quality and state of them. The standard of all meals were sub par and we were very disappointed. We called to highlight the problems immediately and were informed that they were using a taxi that evening, as their usual driver was acting as a chef in their kitchen. We were told someone would call us back to discuss either that evening or the following day. Nobody called. We left it 4 days and called back and were told that they were closed and it was not a convenient time to discuss, but were told someone would call tomorrow - guess what.... nobody called. So we called again this evening. The person my wife spoke to was completely unapologetic, spoke over the top of her and refused to accept any responsibility. We did not go looking for free stuff, we simply wanted to offer a restaurant we had used for years an opportunity to make things right. Instead we were met with excuses, hostility and the feeling of being let down.

Delighted that we could have dinner out but it was not sufficiently good that we will return. The Good - polite service, and well set out venue with good spacing. The Lamb Chadni was tasty and the Chicken Tikka was well cooked The Bad - side dishes were so small they were practically tasters, and the King Prawns were nothing akin to King Prawns and not well cooked. When this was shared with the team all they suggested was a chicken dish in it's place - clearly not what is expected when you order a dish at premium price! The drinks were also questionable, with old glasses being used for the lager (you can tell by the date on them) which meant quality was not great. Overall not as good as other locations locally so will not be 1st choice

On the way through to Aberdeen we stopped here for something to eat. We had Poppadoms & condiments to start. For mains I had chicken tikka Malabari which was a medium spiced dish and my wife had chicken tikka Masala which was a mild dish, we had Pilau rice and cheese Nan along with our meal. Both curries were flavoursome and tasty, the rice & Nan were tasty too. My wife found the chicken tikka Masala to be a bit spicy for her taste for a mild dish. The food was all served nice and hot. The service was pleasant and efficient. Will definitely be visiting here again.

In Meldrum for a wee jog and fancied a takeaway, stumbled across Spice. I would say they could maybe improve their exterior signage as we drive past on a regular basis and never noticed it being there. Ordered food for takeaway, gentlemen persuaded us to have a drink in the bar while we waited. It was very quiet but the staff were all friendly and helpful. Food came pretty quick. When we got home we were all super impressed, loads of flavour and generous portions. Not a grain of rice was left. We will definitely be back. Noticed on the menu it’s BOGOF on a Tuesday when dining in the restaurant.

During our 3-week trip through Scotland we visited many Indian restaurants - Spice at Meldrum Arms is the best. The service was very friendly, polite and helpful, the host who came to our table after dessert is really knowledgeable and a profound expert in Indian cuisine. The food (we had 2 starters, 2 main dishes, and 2 desserts) was very rich in texture and the taste/flavour was composed as to be as well complex as subtle. Great experience.

I visited this restaurant with a friend. I had been there before, but that was about ten years ago. There was no obvious reason for my delay in revisiting. We got a nice reception and good service from the young man who served us. The Indian meal was excellent and value for money. Unfortunately only one other table was occupied and those people left the restaurant, having finished their meal, quite soon after we arrived. This, of course, means that there was no atmosphere whatsoever which did have some effect on our dining experience.

We plumped for this restaurant without checking out any reviews somdidnt know what to expect. It was a Wednesday and just after 5pm sonee were the first in and greeted warmly by a young chap who showed us to our table. We ordered drinks which came along with complimentary popadoms and dips. The food was ordered and when it came it was served by an Indian(?) gent. He took time to explain that the South Indian Korma that my girlfriend had order wasn't like a normal korma. It was less sweet and more like a korma they would have at home. Spicy but not hot. He then offered that if she didnt like it they would exchange it. There was no need as she said it was one of the best curries she'd ever had. My own dish was very good with tender lamb which needed no knife to cut it, a fork was enough. Service was attentive without being intrusive and the personal touch was pleasant. We'll definitely visit again.

Visited for takeaway with mixwd results. The lamb Maharaja was tasty and well spuced but the King Prawn Goan was well below par - prawns could be in no way classified as 'king' and the flavour was bland at best and very oily! Portions were also pretty poor. Sadly we're unlikely to return as there are better options locally.

I’m sorry, I don’t often do this but , Indian is my favourite food, We came here for first time last night. The place was nice and the guy who served me was lovely , but that’s as good as it gets. Our food was SO bland! My hubby ordered Goan Chicken ( apparently supposed to be Chicken CHILLI Masala and i ordered South Indian Garlic Chilli Chicken. Both curries were same colour and same non descriptive taste. Not a HINT of garlic in mine and definitely the exact same flavour as Hubby’s. I say flavour, there actually was none! So very disappointed. Also, we ordered a good half hour before collecting but was more than an hour when we got our food. Sorry, can’t recommend. Can recommend Shish Tandoori in Bridge of Don! So tonight we decided to try the buffet after driving passed the place many times. The dining room is quite basic, we had to walk through a dark dining area to get to our table, when seated we quickly got popadoms but had to wait a little while for drinks. When the beer arrived it was served in a dirty glass, this was rectified by waitress who also said most of the glasses were dirty so she’d wash them but gave her apologies. We had our starters but plates weren’t cleared at all, no clean cutlery for mains given or anywhere to be seen which meant we had to take from another table. The dirty plates were eventually cleared when we asked for the bill! Overall the quality of food was lovely it’s just a shame that the front of house staff are so unatentive. We witnessed something I have never seen before which ruined the overalll visit, people came in for a takeaway and obviously knew the front of house staff. These two girls spoke to them over the bar and started opening up buffet achets, they took food out with their bare hands and ate it, two starters and fingers in the salad. The staff made no attempt to stop this and it really put us off. They also stood right in front of buffet and when we politely stood behind them and said excuse me they weren’t pleasant back. We asked to speak to management, we were told no manager was there but spoke to a male member of staff. We told him about the whole experience and what we had witnessed. He did apologise and said they’d review CCTV footage, nothing taken off our bill even though the food was contaminated with random people’s fingers and saliva. I made this point to him but still no free drinks or nothing. Eventually when my Mum said not even a discount considering we couldn’t eat anymore of the buffet after that the guy did refund one of our meals.

Treated ourselves to a meal this evening and ordered using the online service. Email confirmation stated that the order would be ready for collection in 25 minutes and the only thing that let Spice at Meldrum Arms down was that it was actually nearer an hour, meaning I was waiting around aimlessly, after being told that my food would be a ‘couple of minutes’! Anyway the food was piping hot, generous portions and absolutely delicious! My one suggestion would be to please make sure that you’re giving more accurate timing for collection.

I had a hospital appointment and my wife and I travelled by bus. As this restaurant is very handy for the bus-stop, we decided just to eat here rather than start preparing a meal at home. This was our first visit since the restaurant moved into the main hotel building and we felt the atmosphere was much better; the previous premises were too large and barn-like. For starters, we both had Mixed Pakora which was very tasty but could have been warmer (and the plates were cold). For mains, my wife had Jaipuri Chicken Which she thoroughly enjoyed. Plenty large chunks of chicken and spicy without being too harsh. I had Prawn Biryani with a Madras Sauce which was excellent. At under £20 each, including drinks, the cost was reasonable and the staff were very attentive. This would have been a "very good" rating had it not been for the cold plates and I shall certainly return.

Not amused I phoned up the restaraunt and complained. After a bit of a discussion as to why my main dish tasted of BBQ sauce, i was given a reply of yes, we use a bit of bbq sauce as part of the overall dish..ha never heard of that before! My wife and I visited the Spice Cottage for dinner around 8pm on Friday 10th July. From the outside the restaurant appears slightly run down, with crumbling masonry on the entry pillar, and ground of the car park. A bright blue/pink neon Open sign was on display which I thought would be more appropriate for a pub than a restaurant.Once inside I was surprised by the size of the restaurant, which from the outside looks deceptively small, but once inside a large open area with a high pitched roof is revealed, creating a very open, almost church like atmosphere. The restaurant was very quiet inside, I spotted only 2 other tables occupied when we were being shown to our table. Once seated we took in the atmosphere, which sadly was quite uncomfortable for a several reasons - the overly bright overhead bulbs shining down was a distraction to the eye and was not comfortable for relaxed dining. The big empty areas of space between tables (particularly the center of the room where the wooden floor seemed almost like a stage/dance floor), coupled with the high pitched roof effectively sucked out any feeling of intimacy and atmosphere which was not helped by the barely audible background music which was drowned out by the sound of the waiting staff steps walking across the wooden floor in the "center stage" area.Sadly the food was no improvement. The poppadums were acceptable, but had a slightly stale aftertaste to them, the accompanying dips were poor in general - particularly the mango chutney (I think that is what is was meant to be) was a unrecognisable greyish thin sauce with almost no taste. The lime pickle was however quite good and appeared to be home made with chunky pieces of lime which we both enjoyed. For our starter we ordered a Mixed Vegatable Platter, which consisted with deep fried onion rings, mushrooms, pakora, Samosa, etc. The presentation was not good and judging by the colour (dark brown) and quality of the batter, the veg had been deep fried in oil which had already been used many times and needed to be changed. The flavour was average and was not helped by the poor batter and lack of quality accompanying dips. For the main course I ordered the Tandoori Chicken, I was given a choice of on or off the bone, I ordered on the bone. My wife ordered the Kahari Chicken, for side dishes we ordered a Peshwari Naan and Lemon rice. After a short wait the food was served, my tandoori chicken was presented on a sizzling platter with a chicken supreme cut alongside a thigh both resting on a sizzling bed of sliced onions. The chicken looked and smelled appetising, with a deep red, charred appearance with plenty of the tikka marinade penetrating through the cuts into the meat. A side dish of curry sauce was served with the chicken, along with a side salad of iceberg lettuce, cucumber, tomato and lemon wedge. My wife's Chicken Kahari also looked promising, again deep red sauce of good looking consistency, fresh sliced peppers and the chicken meat appears to have been char grilled on a skewer before being mixed with the sauce. No layer of oil in sight.I quite enjoyed the Tandoori Chicken, even though it lacked any depth of flavour, which I expect from a long slow marinade with the right blend of spices. The meat was cooked well enough (very slightly under for my liking but absolutely cooked through) and it was quite satisfying, although it was quite salty. The curry sauce in the side dish was quite thin and bland tasting. The salad was OK, (although not presented well) but the cucumber slices must have been left out for quite a while as they were dried up and wrinkledThere was next to no heat (spice) in the dish so I ordered a side dish of fresh chilli. A plate of (about 15!) whole green chilies duly arrived, so I tore up a few and sprinkled on top of my food which helped to inject some much needed Spice.Unfortunately my wife's Kahari Chicken was not good. The dish was far too over seasoned, and other than the overpowering salty taste there were no other flavours coming through, other than what my wife describes as "tastes like food colouring / artificial". Sadly my wife could only manage a few mouthfuls before giving up.The bread was far far to sweet with too much desiccated coconut in the Peshwari Naan. The lemon rice was probably the best dish, nice zingy flavour and cooked well.Cost wise our bill came to approx £50, which included the beers and wine, which I think was quite reasonable. No issues at all with the serving staff, who even if appearing a little young and inexperienced were attentive and friendly. In summary, due to the poor decor, the lack of ambiance and the quality of the food we will not be returning to the Spice Cottage, which is a great shame as we really wanted to like and support our local Indian restaurant.L & S Johnson - 10th July 2015

We have tended to avoid this restaurant as we went here when it first opened and were very disappointed. However, as we had been up to Aberdeen in the afternoon, we decided to give it another try. Good choice. We were greeted by a very pleasant waiter and shown to a table well away from the door; on our previous visit the draught was one of the negative factors.I had Chicken Pakora and my wife had Mixed Pakora as starters. Both very tasty with batter that was not too stodgy, and sizable portions. However, they could have been warmer - tip to restaurant, heat the plates. For our main meals my wife had a Chicken Tikka Masala whilst I had a Prawn Biryani with Madras sauce. Again very tasty although the Madras sauce could have had a bit more bite to it.Food value was very good but the bar prices were a bit steep. Although the service could not be faulted, we were the only people in so not really a proper judgement on this occasion. As my review title says, we were pleasantly surprised by the improvements in both the decor and food standards since our previous visit and will return, hopefully to heated plates.

We ordered our first takeaway and were given a 25 min wait time. Not a bad wait for freshly cooked food. On arrival I was suitably impressed with the interior of the restaurant and the pleasant staff to greet you. It certainly looked a great place to dine. We departed with our takeaway keenly anticipating the delights in our bag. On arrival home the first thing you do is pinch a chip. Not impressed to say the least. The chips were chewy and old like they'd been lunchtime reheats. The tandoori mixed grill looked great but unfortunately didn't live up to expectation. The meats were dry and certainly not worth the £14 for the dish. The rice was tasty but somewhat devoid of mushrooms for mushroom rice. Keema naan was tasty and the onion relish was very good but a couple of popadoms to go with it would have been appreciated. We will go back to eat in because the restaurant looked great and this could have been a one off incident. I hope next time were leaving with smiles and 5 stars

I love Indian food, and because this restaurant is just a short walk from my Mum's house I would have loved to eaten there more but sadly it has disappointed. I have had much better curries as ready meals from the supermarket. I did discuss this matter with water one day and asked if there was a proper chef and if there were any dishes that were solely prepared in the restaurant. He said there were were a couple so I went on his suggestion but again it was too generic and could have been any of a number of curries. Tasted and looked like came from a jar. Sadly this is happening too often in curry restaurants in the UK.Well I do hope they have improved since the last time I was there, they do have some good revues . I will give them one more chance. but otherwise better to drive all the way to Inverurie!

I was staying at the adjoining hotel and had the pleasure of eating in this restaurant. The food was of a good quality and the staff were very polite. I enjoyed my meal I enjoyed the service, And I also got a 10% discount as I was staying in the adjoining hotel. In conclusion I recommend both the restaurant and the hotel, happy days

As soon as you walk through the door, you are greeted by friendly staff who are and remain attentive throughout your entire meal experience ... but without fuss. The food is excellent - we have never had a single issue with anything ordered and we have visited Spice Cottage many many times. Staff have a wide knowledge of everything on their menu and are on hand with advice and recommendations if required. Any special requirements are always catered for if possible. Unlike other restaurants in Oldmeldrum, dining at Spice Cottage is a relaxing and un-rushed affair. You do not feel as if you have been crammed into a tiny space and are sitting on top of the table next to you!

We've been regulars at this restaurant since it first opened it's doors about 3 years ago and can quite honestly say that the food has been consistently excellent on every occasion we've eaten here. There is an extensive menu of starters, main courses and side dishes. I think we've now worked our way around the whole menu several times ( with the only exception being the very hot Vindaloo type dishes ). Everything is delicious. The portions are very substantial and made with quality ingredients so every dish is a taste sensation in it's own right. They don't serve beef but the chicken, lamb and king prawn dishes are all absolutely excellent. Prices are highly competitive and you certainly will not go home hungry.Staff and management are always very welcoming and efficient too. Do ask their advice if you fancy trying something different on the menu. We highly recommend the Spice Cottage for anyone who really appreciates quality food in pleasant surroundings. ( By the way, they also seem very busy with take away orders ) We're now tend to avoid eating in other Indian / Bangladeshi restaurants ( Uk or abroad ) as they're always a bit of a disappointment in comparison to The Spice Cottage.

We absolutely loved our curry here on New Year's Eve. The servings were just the right size - not too big and not to small - so I wouldn't recommend sharing a curry with someone else. The staff were friendly and fairly attentive. Very much recommend this Indian restaurant.

We had starters and maincourse. The food wine, service and overall welcoming ,friendly atmosphere is a breath of fresh air. This is a popular restaurant in Meldrum . The restaurant is bonnie and extremely clean. It was quite busy when we were in and after we had eaten we could see why. A must for a curry lover

Moved to Oldmeldrum recently and decided to go for a late night food hunt. This was the only place open past 10.00pm. Arrived at 10.50, greeted by a most welcoming chap. Given the fact that they close at 10.30pm and still welcomed me in, the place deserted and looking primed for the next day, I was rather pleased with the service. What I saw in terms of table layout and presentation was impressive. Food was pretty damn good too. Until next time...

Food tasted ok but i'd rate it as average. The veg pakora was so hard it went flying off my plate as i tried to cut it in half. The mushroom pakora was really oily and i had to leave it as there was grease oozing out of it. My main meal was nice enough, but it was quite salty. My husband had lots of chicken in his but said it was just ok and nothing special. Rice was nice. The service was friendly but i think one of the waiters was new and being trained as he was very nervous and dropped things quite a lot. It's a big place inside, nicely decorated and plenty of tables. Reasonable value for money. I just think the food could be a bit better.

Fantastic food, friendly and attentive staff. We regularly visit or take away food from this little local gem. The food is always very good quality and consistently tasty and assistance is always at hand if you wish to try something new or mix it up with great suggestions from the staff and the kids love to experiment with different dishes too..... We definitely recommend this friendly Indian restaurant, although I will keep my favourite dish to myself, that is a gem :-)Robertson, D.

This is a great place just to pitch up for a great curry supper. Usual stuff on the menu and the staff are always highly attentive, friendly and helpful. Food always delicious and quantity also great and they will happily give you a doggy bag if you wish. It is a bit of a barn of a place and sometimes a bit chilly when lots of people are in for carry outs but the booths at the side are always cosy. Despite the highish ceilings there is a good atmosphere here and we go frequently with friends

this is a small local business that provides a very high standard of Indian cuisine and an incredible level of customer service. the staff especially Rash are very friendly and nothing is too much trouble. As a couple we had been living in Derby in the East Midlands and had not managed to find a good Indian restaurant, but we had to move all the way to sleepy Oldmeldrum to find a true gem of a place.

Had this meal last night, carry out. Order was taken over phone, 15 minutes we were told it would take, just enough time to drive out and get. Perfect. We arrived to collect it, was greeted by helpful staff who produced the carry out within a couple of minutes. This is the second time we have used this service and I have to say the meal was tasty, very tasty, lovely fresh taste of coriander, mint with just a hint of heat. Garlic naan, fresh and tasted of garlic. Please DO NOT expect a Thai type curry as this is not what you will get. This is just as tasty but just as lovely in my opinion. A great Indian meal. I feel it will become one of my favourite meals.

We mainly use this for takeaway but do sometimes dine here as well. The food is ok and reasonably priced but it can taste a bit samey, no matter what main course you go for. For chilli fiends like ourselves, we like the hot dishes to be hot and this is rarely the case.It has recently been done up and it is a big improvement. There is a lot of car parking close by and it is quite roomy so good for an office night out.

We live in Oldmeldrum and have had several take aways from Spice Cottage in the last year or so.I can honestly say we have never been disappointed. We try to order different things but inevitably there are favourites. We have had some things which we have liked more than others, but that is down to personal taste and no reflection on the quality of the food. Great food and good to know you can rely on a tasty takeaway just a stone's throw away! It is a wee bit expensive compared to some, but we would rather pay a little more and be sure of what we get.

We usually go for take-away and this time was no exception. The food was up the usual high standard and was ready in about 20 minutes. The staff are always friendly and competent so we were surprised to have a mistake in our order this time around. We received Lamb Tikka Massala instead of Chicken. I really enjoyed the change but my wife did not. This won't put us off at all, but we may double check the order before leaving next time. Keep up the good work Spice Cottage!

Would love to be really impressed as we live local to the restaurant but we won't be going back out of choice. The food is either tasteless, or over-salted or too sweet. Liked the mixed pakora but that was about it. Daal was as if it was made in sea water it was so salty and lamb green herb curry was too sweet it was unpleasant for a main course. They did to their credit ask if I wanted it remade. Really, really disappointed. Very good young member of staff (male) though who went and asked if they had any mixed pickle.

The staff are friendly and always more than willing to accommodate whether it be advice, recommendation or throwing extra chillies onto a dish or holding off on them to suit! Since the recent decor update, the place feels more "cosy" than it previously did too.

This really is this best Bangladeshi restaurant around. We have been dining here weekly since just after it opened for business (around 18 months ago) so have made our way through quite a lot of the menu. The food is so good that it's given us the confidence to try many new and different dishes .The staff are very efficient and we always get a warm welcome. They're very good at recommending dishes and are keen to ensure you enjoy your meal. Just ask their advice if you fancy trying something different but can't decide what to have ... they're all very helpful.I can't begin to imagine what a previous "reviewer" was writing about when he/she left a review criticising the food - We're all entitled to our opinion but, in mine, that particular review was very unfair and certainly doesn't describe the food that I and many others enjoy regularly. Indeed I found myself wondering about the motives of the person who wrote it ..... ? I recommend The Spice Cottage to anyone who recognises and enjoys good Bangladeshi food at very reasonable prices - Enjoy!

The Spice Cottage is situated at the back of the Oldmeldrum Arms Hotel near the middle of Oldmeldrum . The food is absolutely delicious. Until eating here, I was the sort of person who only really fancied an Indian meal one every couple of months. However, my partner and I have visited here weekly since the last 2 months. The Rogan and Jaipuri dishes are a delight . Waiting staff are polite, efficient and unobtrusive. Apparently the chefs are Bangladeshi so maybe this is why their food is a cut above other establishments. Excellent value - deserves to do well. Highly recommended.
