Just left this lovely little restaurant. First night back open so very quiet. My husband and I both had boneless jerk chicken, rice n peas, slaw and festival. Food comes in sharing portions. Small but so very tasty. Also very filling. I really recommend a visit. The staff are so lovely and friendly. Thank you Mae and team xxx

We came here for a family gathering of over 20 people. The positive is that the food was very nice. The negative.... The service was the worst experience I have ever had. We ordered around 5.20, we left at 9.15 and some of my family members still didn't recieve their order. My children waited so long for their food that when one of theirs eventually came We split it into 2 so they could both eat. I spoke to the staff calmly and suggested if there's a large booking then maybe they should take preorders and they were extremely rude. One of the staff members even laughed when 8 of us were still waiting for rice and peas, we told her it wasn't funny as we have been waiting a long time and she responded "am I in the kitchen though". Such a shame as we do family gatherings once a month and we would have gone there again had the service been good. I hope they learn from their mistakes, train their staff and have a manager present especially on large bookings.

I can honestly say this is one of the nicest meals I’ve had in the UK, considering the price. Imagine Turtle Bay-type food, but infinitely nicer. Great service as well. Cannot recommend this place highly enough.

So disappointed with the whole experience. We came last year and whilst we thought it was a bit of a rip off calling the dishes tapas as a reason to give small portions and charge rip off prices, we did like the food. This visit was very different. Staff was surly and food not good as greasy fish cakes, reheated ackee and salt fish as had gone crusty and chicken reheated as was tough. Place needs deep clean as windows filthy which is a shame as they are in a good spot for watching the world go by.

We (3) came here on a Saturday around 6pm and enjoyed some well-cooked and tasty food. It was empty when we arrived but full by the time we left, likely due to the England match being on. The food is served in small plates, and between the two of us, we ordered curry mutton, jerk chicken, festivals, rice, and fritters. The portions could be bigger for £8-9 per dish, but everything tasted alright and the meat was like butter. The music was spot on, with a mix of reggae and dancehall. The decor downstairs was good, but upstairs could use some tidying up, although it does give "island vibes." We sat upstairs with a good view out into the Lace Market. However, the toilets are up another flight of stairs, so it's not suitable for people with mobility problems. Cleanliness was okay; we didn't use the bathrooms, but a couple of bowls were chipped, although the cutlery was clean. Service was excellent, with our waitress being really friendly and attentive. Value for money is okay. I would recommend it, but I wouldn't return. - Decor: 3/5 - Service: 5/5 - Cleanliness: 4/5 - Value for Money: 3/5 - Food: 3/5 Overall Rating: 3.6/5

The waitress was sooo miserable and behaved like she was fed up with having customers. The food was tiny portions of curried mutton for £8 and 2 spoons of rice and peas £4. The fish fritters were greasy as if cooked in oil that wasn't hot enough. Chicken wings were like overnight food reheated in the microwave so they go hard. Ackee and salt fish was obviously reheated and fish hard and crusty. If you have Caribbean heritage don't go here. And staff should fix their face. Preferably with a smile. Oh and windows were filthy.

The food was good! Loved the oxtail and festivals, enjoyed having the tapas-style menu made it slightly different to other Caribbean restaurants. The cocktails were great too. However, the mac and cheese was a bit disappointing could have used more flavour and plantain hotter in temperature. We visited on a Sunday with a reservation, but you could probably walk in without one. The playlist added to the experience also

Definitely a place with potential but feel we may have caught the restaurant on a bad day? Whilst the food was okay - nothing to shout home about but not bady any means, the service was very up and down. We were seated at our table for dinner and we're not approached for even a drinks order for 25 minutes, then when we ordered our drinks were ready (you can see the bar from the mezzanine restaurant) and were brought upstairs with another tables drinks - they were given their drinks and then ours were walked past us and taken back down to the bar and just left on the side of the bar for some reason? I had to chase if they could be brought to our table and when they were the server put them down without saying anything or even asking who's drink was who's and then walked away. The food when brought to the table, baring in mind it's tapas, wasn't announced as to what was what when it arrived so we had to ask as some items we had ordered were vegan. Also when paying the bill no asking about how the meal/experience was and just asked 'is it visa?' 'all on one card?' - very bizarre and no thank you. I can only assume that we caught the restaurant on a busy day so service slipped and hopefully it's an isolated case. Unfortunately we wouldn't recommend to others just due to our experience, like I said the food is okay - the service left alot to be desired. Long story short, the jerk wasn't jerking! Mac and Cheese was insanely oily and was garnished with clothing fibres - I didn't appreciate the compensation offered from the off-site manager either... a shot of Sorrel. Earned 1 star for the dumplings as they were pretty tasty. I appreciate a bit of leisurely "Island Time" but this took the biscuit - 2hrs+ later for a quick lunch when the restaurant is empty is not acceptable. Have enjoyed several meals here before this visit but unfortunately won't be returning. You're better off going to Turtle Bay, which says it all really.

A small group of friends and I came to Spice Cay this afternoon for what we thought would be a delicious and pleasant experience, which is what our previous encounters have been. This was not the case today. The food was awful, the majority was bland/cold, and if there were flavours they were rather questionable. Some items were okay. When we brought this up with the staff, to say we were not satisfied with what we have received, they were back forth constantly with a manager on the phone, who was not present in the restaurant. Only to tell us they will not do any discount overall and will only take off a few of the items as “the food was fine and this is how it is served” when the manager was not present to be the judge of this. The back and forth took 50 minutes, with no resolution. Which by the way they came back with a higher bill than the last time as the manager said we have to pay for a dish we was not satisfied with (ordered 2 of the same dish) and put it back on the bill after already taken both of. They had no one in the restaurant who had any authority to make any decision or deal with a situation, and had to liaise with a manager on the phone which took as I said 50 mins. In the end we paid the lower bill as we didn’t want to waste any more of our time. We will not be returning here again.

Went to spice cay this afternoon, having been before, and really enjoyed the food. Were informed menu had changed (which was smaller, and less choice). Between 5 of us, we had: Jerk chicken spring rolls Jerk chicken quesidilla Mac n cheese Salt fish fritter balls Escovitched fish bites Festivals Dumplings Pepper prawns Plantain Coleslaw Disappointed is an understatement... Jerk chicken was tasteless/ bland and dry in the spring rolls and quesidilla, and obviously not fresh. Spring rolls were cold on the inside. One was sent back barely touched, and the fresh one never came out. Salt fish fritters had little to no salt fish in it and was predominantly tangy/zesty/vinegary. Fish bites were just salty and had no taste. Coleslaw was fine but came out after asking for it as it seemed it had been forgotten. Mac and cheese was so oily it was oozing out top and just sat in a puddle. There was also some fluff/hair found in one dish. Festivals and dumplings were good. And the prawns were nice. And they did give us some sauce from the curried mutton as a little extra that we asked for. Dread to think how the bottomless brunch will go down as the place wasn't busy today and food came out very staggered. The quality of food for the price is not okay! When we spoke to the waitresses re the food and dissatisfaction, they took a while to come back to us (each time), as they were having to liaise with the owner/manager on the phone! Initially, they took off the 2 mac n cheese and the spring roll. Then came back and had took off quesidilla but put one mac n cheese back on, so were trying to say we needed to pay more than the initial amended bill. This whole situation took over 45 minutes and was not resolved. We ended up paying, as clearly weren't getting anywhere and didn't want to waste anymore time. We weren't able to talk to the manager as they weren't there, and hadn't given anyone in the place authority to deal with complaints/issues. They have changed chef and the food has suffered. Have lost a lot of custom from us who before todays experience, would have been coming back, and have previously been with large groups of friends.

Initially we were greeted by a waitress whi looked bored to be there, she barely spoke louder than a whisper the whole time we were there. Unfortunately they had run out of red wine despite having three on the menu, so I got a half glass when I ordered a large. The food took a very long time to come out and then the portions were tiny when the dishes individually are quite expensive. Our curried mutton had 4 large bones and two small pieces of meat. The flavours were very good but it definitely does not deliver on value for money. We were really excited to come here and the menu holds a lot of promise but the staff have no service values and we were rather hungry afterwards. Fingers crossed it was just a one off!

Oh my goodness what has happened to this place? I have been here several times with family and friends but today the food was shocking. The order had to be changed twice as there was no ackee and salt fish and no tostones. We ordered oxtail and was presented with a dish of bones in some gooey gravy. The rice and peas was cold and you had to search for the peas and the fried dumplings were a joke they were half the size they used to be. Overall a cold, insipid, flavourless, spiceless experience. I won’t be back. It’s a shame because I thought we had finally got a decent Caribbean place in Nottingham. I pray you were just having a off day for your reputation’s sake.

I have visted Spice Cay on several occasions and even recommended here to friends and family. I can only e they were ha being a really bad day. We had we change our food choice as there was no ackee or tostones available. We ordered curried mutton which was bony and tasteless no spice or that little kick of chilli. The rice and peas was cold and very little peas to be found! The fried dumpling was lacking in size and you could taste that the oil was old. The oxtail wow.. had to be returned it was as if they had put another customers oxtail bones into a bowl and covered it with gravy.. I was beyond disappointed. I will not be going back!

We were looking forward to our visit, as we love spicy Caribbean food. The place looked good, all be it a little quiet for a Saturday evening. The service was OK, nothing special (but owning my own restaurant and working in catering for 25 years, I set myself higher standards than most people i suppose). My food though, well, it was average to poor at best. The food came out so damn quick that the only option of “cooking” was reheating in a microwave. The chicken in the tacos was cold and dry, the rice was hot on too cold in the middle. I left some of my goat curry and tacos as it dawned on me that if it had all been microwaved (which it most certainly had been), how long was it left in plastic containers in the fridge before reheating? With the dryness of the chicken, my guess is days. The flavours were nice, but nothing “wowed” us at all. Won’t be returning

We were blown away by the flavours and quality of the food served when we went for lunch. Tapas style, so plenty of sharing and I’m oh so glad we did! Nothing missed the mark but the standout dish was the fish bites and the spicy prawns. I habve no does how they make them so good. It’s a small independent restaurant and there were a couple of menu items unavailable but with the breadth of choice available it didn’t matter. The tacos were amazing - big and spicy not teensy small ones and, well, everything was great. Super reasonably priced for the amount of food we had and a couple of beers. We’ve been to the Caribbean many times and this food was the best we’ve had in either place. All that was missing was the sun. Top marks and can’t wait to come back to explore more of the menu

Delicious food as always but very disappointing experience. Me and my partner were very excited to bring our friends here for the first time however not only did they mess up our booking by giving our table to another group (even though we had emailed and called to confirm the booking for some reason they didn’t ask for the other groups name on arrival ?) they also tried overcharging us at the end of the meal. When ordering we were made aware a lot of what we wanted they had already ran out and my sister in law was given the wrong drink to what she asked for. Despite the service though the food was amazing

This place could be great, but without more thought it won't last. Food was tasty, but expensive for very measly portions. Tapas is Spanish, calling everything tapas as an excuse to sell multiple dishes at £8/£9 each won't have customers returning. 4 Prawns, £8! The curry goat was beautiful, but I had 50% bone 50% meat. Couldn't order a cocktail as they were £12, which is just crazy for a shot of liquor and fruit juice. Wife had jerk chicken and didn't enjoy it at all, but I thought it was ok. No kids options. Tried the "bammy" but it was vile (sorry bammy) . Hope they take a step back and see it from a customers POV, not just a "how much dare we charge" POV.

Been meaning to try this place for a while and wish I hadn't waited so long. The food is absolutely divine. I had the curried goat (the meat was cooked on the bone just how I like it so you get the rich flavour from the bone marrow), stuffed peppers with sweet potato curry and the salt fish fritters. The curry that filled the peppers was superb, really savoury flavour, I could happily eat a bowl of that on its own. The salt fish fritters were a nice delicate balance to all the rich flavours from the curries and very filling. The array of cocktails on offer looked very tempting, next time I visit I'll remember not to drive.

My kids are not very adventurous with food but tried the roti, chips and macaroni cheese and were more than happy with that.I love the idea of tapas so you get to taste lots of small dishes which works really well with this style of food and means you get to try more! Second time I’ve been here in a month. Had to come again a) because the first time was so good and b) to check whether the first time was a one off. I’m happy to say it wasn’t. The food is amazingly good and I consider myself to be a rum punch connoisseur and their rum punch is up there 100%. Will definitely be back.

First visit here on very hot saturday evening. The place inside is more like cafe than restaurant. We chose to sit upstairs thinking it would be nice and breezy and it was a big mistake as it was absolutely boiling hot up there with no access to open the windows and no fans. The toilet is also located at the top floor so its not good for someone with wheelchairs. The food was lovely but the atmosphere and the ambience were nothing special and was not cozy at all

I don’t usually write reviews but I stumbled on this taste sensation a while back and made it a must go to destination on my second visit to Nottingham. The food is truly delicious and flavoursome. I’ve not yet tried everything on the menu 😊...

Nice spot and lovely ambience. The cocktails are a bit pricey, could be because they import a lot of their spirits. The waiters are a bit Hmmn, either they’re just getting into the role or they just plain dodgy. The jerk chicken wings was lovely, except that It appears twice on the menu, one place at £4 and the other place at £7, the difference being one piece of chicken. Pls look at the menu properly and be sure before placing your order. I’ll give the place some more time to mature before visiting again.

Veg rice has no veg! Was told oxtail was chicken. Mac n cheese was not macarroni and we had to wait for ages for some of the dishes. When we wanted to speak to waitress, she was down the road... Yes she had left. It was later. after she had returned, I received the Caesar salad ages after all our other dishes. I realised she'd been to the supermarket to buy the bagged Caesar salad.

Delicious, very authentic comfort food served in a relaxed setting. Don't miss the huge mural of Bob Mali on the wall. Prompt service, very nice and polite staff. Would definitely visit again. Ordered the oxtail, fish and curry goat.

Great Caribbean tapas, good selection of dishes to choose from. We was asked what spice level we wanted which was fantastic. There was a wide selection of cocktails. All 6 of us really enjoyed our meal and look forward to returning soon

Spice Cay food was a fab explosion of Caribbean tapas full of delicious textures, flavour and spices. We found 2 dishes plus rice and peas more than enough each as good portions. We shared dishes so we could try more. More expensive than other tapas...

Aw man, disappointed. I'll maybe go back for a lunch deal one day, but nearly £8 for some vegetables in a little wrap was bleak, honestly gone in a few bites. No sauce, couldn't taste seasoning. Staff were lovely, good range of vegan options. Then the tip went on automatically bringing it to nearly £9. I had to ask for it back, to which they apologised. Just sucked cause I always tip, I just couldn't bring myself to pay that much for that. If the burrito was bigger would have all been forgivable. Ended up going Greggs round the corner to fill up.

Friendly welcome, fantastic food & fabulous service. Vinay was an absolute delight. It's rare that you get such wonderful service. He was so considerate and gave us advice on the menu, checked on us throughout the evening. Vinay went above and beyond to deliver great food & service. Some of the best food we have had in ages. We popped in for a cocktail earlier on in the week. The waitresses recommendation was so good we came back for dinner. We had the rumpeypumpy cocktail . We had saltfish fritters, goat curry, boneless jerk chicken, ripe fried plantains, red cabbage slaw, brown fish stew, peas & rice. We loved it so much we are coming back again at the end of the week. 3 times in one week is definitely a record for us.

Everyone was so friendly and welcoming, the portion sizes were very good and the quality and taste of the food was top notch. It was great to find such a brilliant independent restaurant in a world fast becoming full of big names. The value for money was amazing and staff were very knowledgeable about food allergies and intolerances. So glad we decided to take a chance!

Most disgusting food i ever have. The owner and staff of the shop show pathetic behaviour here. They dont know how to deal with customer. They also misbehaved with delivery riders. Not recommended anyone.

Absolutely beautiful breakfast, fantastic portion size, felt really full! Lovely teacups and teapots, excellent affordable prices. It is cosy and homely, feels a bit like going to a good friends house for tea. If you order a large pot of tea you get a really good sized pot! Staff were friendly and sweet. Vegans are very well catered for with no fuss. 10000% recommended

This is my second time ordering from this takeaway and this time I was very disappointed The chicken dumpling hardly had any chicken in it which tasted more of curry than anything else the very small portion of ackee and salt fish left me disappointed and the rice and peas was just bearable No point in pre-ordering your meal as it will come later anyway
