Spentgrain in Sunderland

My husband and I had the duck with waffles and orange sauce, which was so delicious. My little girl was made chips and sausages off menu and she loved it. I have to say the chips were delicious. The hospitality was great and the gentleman who served us was so friendly and connected with the little one so much. We will definite visit again.

Lovely chilled atmosphere. Great food. Excellent service. Will 100% return to sample more dishes from the outstanding eclectic menu. If you bo nothing else in life try the Sticky toffee pudding. I won't spoil the surprise.

This is a little gem in Sunderland and well worth the visit. The food is beautifully put together and offers wide choice, tastes fantastic and is great value. The staff are super friendly and the vibe is relaxed and informal but professional. Should mention that the drinks were lush too, some lovely gins, beers and ciders. Nice to see local produce on the food and drinks menus. We were in town for a gig and will be back again just to visit this understated but accomplished and impressive eatery. Great work S G

I've been wanting to visit this place for ages . Wanted to support small business and the fact that the menu is fresh and regularly changed. I have to say I was a bit disappointed. Firstly, it was quiet and lacked atmosphere, but I was more disappointed in the person serving us. He lacked any kind of personality other than can I get you a drink and was everything OK was all we got out of him. He showed no interest in us as customers even though we were the only customers in for quite a while. The pate starter was delicious, but my short beef rib was absolutely thick of fat. I expect some fat, but it was mostly thick, disgusting fat.Very little beef. I didn't complain as it wasn't their fault, but he saw how I had left most of it, and he showed no sign of attempting to ask why I had left so much. The chicken dish was nice, as was the garlic mash , but the roast were very overdone. I am so sorry to put in a negative review, but I was so disappointed. Maybe visiting on a busier night with more atmosphere and a different choice of main my review might have been a lot more positive. Putting aside the issue with the beef [I was probably unlucky] on atmosphere and service alone, we will not be returning. There are lots of positive reviews, so give it a try going by those reviews, you will have a good experience.

Visited tonight for early evening meal. Two adults and two children ages 5 and 9. Food was delicious. Accommodated menu requests for children. During the meal the 5 year old asked if we can go back. Next visit booked. Service is excellent, menu choice excellent and quality excellent. Also excellent value. Looking forward to our next visit. Thank you.

This restaurant is tucked away in one of the quieter more remote part of the city. However once inside it is tastefully decorated and cosy. Once seated though, everything is nothing short of amazing. The standard of customer service is exceptional and moving on to the food we find it difficult to find the correct words to do it justice. The whole dining experience was nothing short of exceptional which we found to be very reasonably priced. This was our first visit to this amazing restaurant and most certainly will not be the last. We can only add that you try it for yourself.

Went with my daughter on her recommendation after going for Valentine’s Day, she knows I like a chicken Kiev. I ordered the Kiev & she got a burger. Food arrived looked lovely but no garlic oil/butter as my daughter said it came with, I was told it was already on the chicken. It’s was more like a chicken schnitzel and was dry. They happily made me some and some garlic alloli for my daughter which were delicious. Never had a Kiev before without garlic butter and my daughter had it last time and their FB page shows little jugs of it, so not sure why it had changed. Enjoyed the meal in the end

Spent Grain is a hidden gem and if you haven't tried it yet, you should. It's absolutely beautiful food, well presented and the service is friendly and efficient. It's a great place with plenty of variety on the menu for vegetarians (me) and meat eaters (my husband). The desserts are amazing. Looking forward to coming back soon to try the spring menu too. A fabulous place, can't fault it.

We were disappointed that the menu shown on the website wasn't the one that we were presented with on our visit. We thought the choices weren't as good.

From the moment we stepped inside the door and was welcomed by Nathan, we felt very comfortable. We’d heard a lot about the restaurant from our friends L & J. We had checked out the menu a few times before arriving, but changed our minds as so many of the meals tempted us. Clearly Nathan and his chef have a passion for great food at a good price. I had the “panack” a local dish served with the best bread & butter and great chips. My partner had the belly pork on butter beans. The variety of fresh veg served was cooked to perfection. The wine list is very good as is the soft drink options. All in all, I would thoroughly recommend the restaurant. This place is a sparkling gem in a quiet, less loved part of Sunderland…….but don’t miss a treat. Visit and have a great meal in a lovely welcoming north east atmosphere. We’ll visit again when next in toon!

Amazing experience. Food was delicious and very well priced. My sister and I had Pulled beef which arrived with two perfect poached eggs on top. A side order of chips and a bottle of white wine. Finished with coffee. Devine. We will be back asap. I wish we had more like this in this sorry excuse for a city.

3rd visit to this hidden gem in Sunderland City Centre. Food has been absolutely stunning at each visit. Visited today for breakfast; I had the ‘Toast’ which doesn’t sound much but was consisted of burrata, prosciutto and peaches on sourdough with honey and was such a lovely combination and a nice change. My partner had the full English and the black pudding and bacon were particularly outstanding. Service is always very professional and welcoming, looking forward to our next visit and trying more of the great variety available.

Food was delicious as always , we had pate and sqid to start , then beer battered fish and chips , the fish was cooked to perfection , the batter was tasty and crispy . Nathan the waiter was so friendly , service was brilliant , compliments to the Chef , keep up the good work .

5 of us met for lunch. We were the first ones in as 12.30 and were pleased with the access and decor. Everything appears to be made fresh, and the presentation was good. 2 of us had club sandwich with fries which was very nice. 1 had eggs benedict which I was told was delicious. Sadly the other 2 had fish and chips. In both cases, the batter was as solid as cement. It was pointed out to the server who said they would have to revisit the make up of the batter so I hope future recipients are able to put a fork in it. It was disappointing but we will give them another try in the future.

Just back home after a lovely Sunday lunch at Spent Grain. We both had the Ham Hock terrine to start which was superb I had Beef Brisket and my wife had Roast Chicken for our main course. Both mains were cooked to perfection and presented with a selection of vegetables (plus a Yorkshire Pud) All the food was delicious and the service too was perfect. Thank you to all of the Spent Grain team. I’d recommend booking as this place is becoming more and more popular.

Wow, what a little gem of a restaurant. We had heard great reports about the food, but this place is more than just excellent cuisine. From entering we knew this was going to be special. Staff are very friendly and welcoming, engaging at the table and thoughtful , giving you time in between courses and very food knowledgeable. The decor, the open kitchen, cleanliness and professionalism really shine through. We all had different dishes and no-one was disappointed. My terrine was perfect, the Lamb mains with vegetables ( an understament, a bowl of fresh, well complemented veg) and the Lemon dessert , wow so well presented and left we wanting to return very soon. Thank you for a wonderful night!
