In a world full of Costa and Starbucks etc etc etc ..it was such a treat to find such a gem....the owner is doing her best and the scones cakes and coffee are so 'homemade" it's ALWAYS a treat to escape to here! I'll keep supporting independent traders, the soul of Wirksworth xx

Please note the previous review where someone state they only offered disposable cups was on the Wirksworth Festival weekend - usual service is in regular cups/plates/cutlery… I have been going to the sour cow since December 2023 - it’s changed hands, is family run and Kelly is building a menu that reflects the tastes of the customers. The cheese toasties are fabulous, coffee is great and there’s always chat if you want it. If you don’t see what you’d like just ask - if they can they will accommodate you. The cafe is friendly, responsive and Kelly and her team always want to do their best! Ooh and if you happen to be there when they’ve baked cookies - try them! ❤️👍🏼🙏🏽

This place has sticky tables, serves tea in paper cups and you have to fish your teabag from your paper cup with a wooden spoon. Tasteless teas too. Grubby interior and the tables aren’t cleared frequently. If you can’t do a decent job, don’t bother opening.

Absolutely Amazing. i’ve returned back to the small town of wirksworth as it is the summer holidays and came back to spend time with my family. we came to the sour cow as we use to go there last year. the place is under new management (the lady is so welcoming) we ordered some toasties and some hot drinks the drinks were bought to us within under 5 minutes which i’d say was amazing timing due to the little space that they have. for the food i had the special of the day which was a bacon, cheddar and chilli jam toastie and it was DELICIOUS. the salad on the side was also great. overall the food was amazing aswell as the service. the manager/cafe owner was welcoming and so kind. i would definitely recommend visiting this cafe if you do end up in wirksworth. will 100% be returning again!

We visited this lovely little cafe for lunch during a day out in Wirksworth. It is small but very charming. The two ladies who were serving were friendly and polite. We ate toasties which were very tasty and best of all came with a delicious side salad (salad leaves, cherry tom, cucumber, radish, peppers, pomegranate seeds and dressing). This made my day as I love a proper bit of salad!! Reasonably priced too. Plus the cafe owner (presumably) gave us lots of advice on where to visit in the local area. We'd definitely go back if we were in the area. Lovely cafe in a lovely town :)

On entering, we were totally ignored by the owner. We had to ask if we should be seated, and then it took about 5 minutes for the other staff member to clear the table - and she didn't wipe it clean. We weren't greeted or smiled at, or offered options by either of the staff. Despite the fact that there were only four tables of people in the cafe, we had to wait 20 minutes for coffee and cake. The coffee and cake, to be fair, was OK. However, when we went to pay, the extremely miserable cafe owner didn't make eye contact or smile or really acknowledge us at all. Sad - as the products they were selling were pretty good, but the ambience and 'welcome' were miserable. I really don't like criticising a small business, but I did feel like walking out soon after we arrived. The only thing that kept us that there was little other choice in the village, although the new take out place down the road looked good, and it was only the threat of heavy rain which prevented us from sitting out on their chairs (they have very little indoor space). All in all, sadly, quite a miserable experience. Sorry - but you need to up your game in the hospitality business.

The place was cramped, smelly and dirty and the two workers were VERY noisy.... cake choice was low , the lemon and polenta cake was awful texture was all wrong..i left it made me feel sick 🤢. The only nice thing was the tea and tbf you got more than you normally would in places plus at least it was tea leafs...but the cackle of one of the workers was enough to make us leave

We visited the cafe when we were staying in the area. It was one of the nicest I have ever been to. The food was perfect and even though Wirksworth is a small town where everyone else in the cafe seemed to know each other, we were made so welcome by the owner. On our second visit we were greeted like old friends. I couldn't recommend this place enough.

Confusing, nasty, unpleasant customer disservice experience This is a cafe I regularly ‘used ‘to go to. Today( being on a diet that allows very few calories, ) while I was having my coffee here, I looked at the menu and asked if they could do a garden salad( which is a well known expression that just means a basic salad) as I can’t eat bread and cheese etc at this meal. The server didn’t seem familiar with the phrase garden salad, she asked a few questions, then went away . Shortly after, the owner came out asking exactly what I wanted( I had just explained, but hey Ho). I was brought out a salad which tbh, (though this isn’t my main point, )was very poor being mostly lettuce. See my photo. I wasn’t trying to get a ‘ cheap meal’ , just simply something I could eat. The salad contained loads of lettuce, one slice of cucumber( yes really!) One tomato , a few bits of spring onion and some blueberries( which were on the ‘special ‘salad so I said they could add some. The original server asked if I wanted a boiled egg, I said yes. After I’d eaten the egg and the tomato, you can see in tne photo what was left. When I went to the counter to pay, both the owner and another member of staff were there . I was not three feet away, and the owner ignored me for at least five minutes while I stood there holding my purse . She then eventually gave me a dirty look, and asked “ did I want to pay”? (Well, yes that’s why I’m standing here for five minutes with my purse in my hand. ) I paid, no ‘please ‘ or ‘thank you ‘and I left. I can’t begin to surmise what was going on here for me to be treated in this way, when I simply asked for a garden salad. If the owner didn’t want to provide one, or wanted to charge me for the special, she was free to do so. Very upset and angry tbh about how I was treated today, and I hope the owner is ashamed when she reads this, as I did nothing to deserve this treatment .

We moved to Wirksworth January this year and found the Sour Cow to be highly recommended by the locals. Having decided we didn't want to cook this Saturday we took the dogs for a stroll and treated ourselves to a vegetarian breakfast, poached eggs on toast, a latte and a pot of tea. Just delicious! The veggie breakfast was HUGE! Well cooked and full of flavour (scrambled eggs, fried mushrooms and potatoes, beans, tomatoes with 2 fairly thick slices of toast). Be hungry if you order it - you have been warned. The paached egss were a little small in comparison to the toast but just equally tasty, tough the husband was a bit disappointed with some of the water making his toast soggy. A pot of tea which seemed endless and the latte stayed hot for ages. Happy dogs under the table and joyful bellied around it. Especially as we took a slice of the chocolate cake home (again a disappointed husband who didn't keep up as I ate most of it) and devoured it happily. Next time we might have to get a selection! Cosy, friendly, a team of bubbly staff and a menu which can and will be adapted as much as possible to suit your desires. What more can you ask for for the price? Very much looking forward to being regular customers.

Wirksworth is a brilliant place to stay and I was absolutely bowled over by the warmth of the welcome I received everywhere I went in the town. Nowhere more so than at the Sour Cow - certainly not named after its manager Emma! She is a delight, better than a stand-up commedian, her infectious laugh pervades the place and she clearly knows her customers well. There's a good breakfast and lunch menu, tempting cakes of all sorts and I was very happy with the coffee as well. The prices are incredibly reasonable. I visited twice during my wek in the town but when I return next I think I'll make it a daily stop, it's worth it.

Been here a couple of times now - interesting hot lunch options - very tasty. Simple 'on toast' snacks and lovely cakes. Super cheerful friendly service. Excellent prices. Do try it.

We love this place, it's friendly and so relaxed. Often go for a coffee and cake and the kids love the frozen yoghurts! The lady who runs it is chatty and friendly and the prices are very good.

Great value for breakfasts, lunches and CAKE at any time. Amazing how so much food and drink is provided from such a compact space. Both the leaf tea and ground coffee are fine, The yoghurts with their toppings are freshly made and are refreshing.

One late lunchtime our cycling group descended on the Sour Cow desperate for a brew and a bite to eat. The proprietors could not have been more helpful bringing unlimited pots of tea and coffee and a fine range of toasted sandwiches. The way they coped with this unexpected sudden influx of cyclists did them credit.

When two of us can have breakfast and three drinks (actually technically four....) for just £8 you know you're onto a good thing. When the food and drinks are great and plentiful you know you've won whatever competition you want to class this as.

A group of 7 of us popped in for afternoon drinks and cake. The owner is LOVELY even providing a vegan hot chocolate for the cows milk protein allergy sufferer toddler in our group. The generous pots of tea and coffee were most welcome and the cake portions were HUGE and delicious. Prices are extremely reasonable, too. The children in our group love the toy box so thoughtfully provided. We will certainly visit again if we are in Wirksworth. Just note this isn't the sort of place to visit if you are in a hurry. The owner mostly works alone, everything is freshly prepared but well worth the wait.

This is a pleasant little coffee shop. The staff were friendly with a sense of wanting to please. The milk shakes were freshly made and very good and reasonably priced. The coffee was good and served in a cafetière. The cakes were homemade and delicious.

Very warm and welcoming staff. The food was simple and yummy. But the cakes were my reason to sit down. Definitely will return for more.

When visiting Wirksworth ,the cafe we used to go to no longer allows dogs in,so we were stuck when a shopkeeper suggested the sour cow,& the staff could not have been more dog welcoming & the added bonus was she made my calzone vegan with no hassle & couldn't have been more friendly & helpful .it was also astonishingly good value for money .a great find

Brilliant breakfast - either traditional or american ( waffles, etc ) with a pot of coffee or tea for only five pounds. Free refills on drinks. Quirky, great location. We had scambled eggs with loads of tomatoes, mushrooms, potatoes and cheese . Lots of nice home made cakes, would definitely go back.

Have been here several times since it opened, it's normally ran by just the one lady who is always pleasant and helpful. Went today with the kids who both had a wonderful hot chocolate, we had a tea and coffee with free refills plus two gorgeous cakes. There's always a great lunchtime menu with veggie options. Would definitely recommend

On recommendation we went for the brunch, WOW, it was great. We were in a group and the owner was working alone so there was a bit of a wait as the place was busy but our meals were well worth the wait. The included bottomless tea and coffee helped the wait! The little ones were happy with the books and toys but we would have appreciated a highchair for the baby.

I visited these tearooms with my daughters on Friday 24th May. I have been to other tea shops in Bakewell, but Toscas is by far the best. We had afternoon tea for three of us, we sat outside in the court yard. The afternoon tea arrived and there was lots of lovely cake and sandwiches, beautifully presented, and our host friendly and gave us a warm welcome. We really enjoyed our afternoon tea, very civilised, we will defiantly be visiting again. In fact we will have a day out to bakewell just to visit Toscas .

Great choice for lunch out. After a pleasant walk through the beautiful countryside of Derbyshire, we stopped for lunch and so glad we did. A wide choice of dishes hot and cold from salads to mezes to traditional burgers, plus lots, lots more including suitable choices of gluten-free, vegetarian and vegan options. I opted for the delicious chicken with tagliatelle. A generous helping. Good range of drinks from typical traditional ales to cocktails and wines, plus many non-alcoholic alternatives. Or simply coffee or tea. Overall, a pleasant lunch in a beautiful Derbyshire village.
