Bouncer with black hair refused to let us in after queuing for 10 minutes. He claimed it was because we were a group of 6 even though he let in a group of 6 people after us. We were trying to meet some friends inside a place we’ve been loads of times before. Sad to leave this place a bad review as it’s a great place inside, the world would be a better place without power hungry bouncers! He also refused to give us his security number, we won’t be going there again.

There are lots of places in the northern Quarter to endure an outdoor beer or two when the Sun is shining. As we walked into Stevenson Square, we were spoilt for choice really and chose the soup kitchen. This proved to be a great idea for a couple of reasons. Firstly, they have a pretty good lager. I'm happy hour at £3.50 which helps! Also, they had seating right on the other side of the square that we didn't know about, but this enjoyed waiter service and a lot of late afternoon sunshine. The service was quick and friendly and the inside of the bar is nice enough, but this was definitely a day to be out in the Sun!

Getting sick of watered down cocktails that claim to have measures of x, y and z in them, but have no material alcohol impact?! Then SOUP is the place for you! This place has a decent selection of cocktails that deliver. It's not a tiki bar, so you're not going to get your cocktail served in a tiki mug with an umbrella and massive slice of pineapple with hula dancers. But you will get the alcohol you're paying for! Cocktails aside, the venue feels a little mixed in terms of style and feel. It's not plush, and it's not a traditional pub. It feels like a pho/wagamma bench style setting, but has more of a bar vibe to it, so a bit of a mixed message. We didn't have food here, but I have heard the food is good for the price paid.

Set just on the edge of Stevenson Square this isn’t your average bar. We’ve not eaten there but go for drinks quite often and always enjoy our time. It is done out in a minimalist style but it suits the area. Staff are friendly and it was nice that they offered us samples of the drinks we are ordering as we’ve not had them before. That is a good sign on its own as it means you can try different beer and so on. As a result, we got to drink a mango bitter which was a lot better than it sounds. Take a table by the window and watch as Manchester moves by whilst enjoying a drink.

Soup kitchen is one of the best bars/venues in Manchester but has recently changed quite a bit, I miss the upstairs DJ booth and the old interior as well as the cask ales. However the staff are all friendly and relaxed and it remains a place that feels warm and welcoming as soon as you enter, the low key vibe is soup's USP and what makes it so addictive, its a place where anyone can go and enjoy a drink, alone, or with friends and feel comfortable. Its obvious that staff shortages are affecting many hospitality places at the moment and Soup is clearly feeling the strain of this also as there simply were not enough staff to serve the queue on a busy Friday night however the venue was still clean and staff were efficient.

Excellent homemade herby tomato soup with fresh focaccia bread, served in a simple enamel bowl. Sit on a stool by the huge windows, or on a bench at communal trestle tables. £4.00 and a fine intro to the funky Northern Quarter of the city and my first Mancunian adventure.
