Authentic family run restaurant with nice Italian atmosphere. Good menu all freshly cooked. This is our 3rd visit and we will be back next time we visit Southport. PS Free parking.

An unusual set up, small owner run restaurant, allowing a personalised offer. A supplemented menu with free soup and dessert courses. Delicious food.

Booked for the first time today and was very surprised that Sorrento isn’t packed out. The food is absolutely delicious, all home cooked..and the wine great. Such good value… the decor is just like little trattoria in Italy, it was warm, welcoming and the music eclectic… We will be back..

Visited Sorrento's with family for the first time in a long time. Food was beautiful and the service could not have been better in this small independent restaurant.

I must start by saying the food was excellent. No complaints. The calzone pizza pastry was lovely, not hard like many places serve. However for the majority of our time there we were the only guests, a table of 4. Absolutely no atmosphere. Whe you enter downstairs the corridor is very uninviting. Hasn't been decorated for ages. It even has a copy of the phone book and yellow pages in. Up steep stairs to a room that looks like a time warp to another decade. Desperately in need of a lack of paint. And what's with the tea towels on the walls, with different british dialects explained. Keep the Geordie one but get rid of the rest. It's also 2023, no credit or debit cards accepted. Luckily we had passed by earlier in the day and picked up a menu and seen this. There's no website to check up on before you go. We enjoyed the food but won't rush back

Visited Sorrento 8th October 2023 for lunch. Very cosy venue old school Italians feel to the place which I love. Very friendly and welcoming staff. I went for the Fillet steak which was cooked to perfection and delicious. Prices are very reasonable with the food being exceptional. I would highly recommend a visit to this little gem

By far the best and most authentic Italian restaurant in the North East. Simple but incredibly delicious food, and a cosy atmosphere reminiscent of pizza restaurants in Naples. Service was impeccable and the friendly owner even threw in a dessert on the house.

Lovely intimate little one-man-band restaurant. Authentic food and great service. Very reasonably priced and we even got a few extra dishes free of charge. Highly recommended.

Authentic taste of Italy, fabulous food and a charming host/chef. Be prepared to wait for your food but delicious complimentary dishes filled in the time. Would recommend this quirky restaurant and we will return. Whitley Bay is full of restaurants but this one is a gem.

Thank you for a wonderful evening Romolo. It was my sons first visit. We loved all of the food we ordered ( lasagne and spaghetti bolognese) and the complimentary soup, antipasti and tiramasu were amazing! Fantastic authentic Italian food

We dine here fairly regularly and it is always a lovely experience with delicious food cooked by Romolo. (I hope I have your name correct!) Last night I had the pollo sorrento which was flavourful and creamy. The wine is always nice and we had extra courses brought to us which were so good. (You just never know what Romolo will create next.) Vegetable soup, garlic bread and tiramisu in addition to our ordered courses this evening. Delicious! Many thanks!

This place is a little gem! Outstanding food prepared with care and attention, nothing hurried and rushed. A superb family meal! We will definitely be back.

Excellent authentic Italian restaurant At first glance very basic and cluttered almost like sitting in someone’s kitchen diner. I cannot speak highly enough of the owner the chef the waiter as he does the lot himself absolutely amazing. The food is outstanding we’ll prepared and we’ll presented. If your looking for a modern Italian with bells and whistles Sorrento is not for you if however your looking for great food at a reasonable price with a friendly atmosphere this is the place to go. Will certainly be back.

Lovely and relaxed restaurant with delicious meals served by the lovely chef. He went above and beyond, with complimentary dishes, including a wonderful apple cake to finish. We certainly left with a smile and can't wait to return.

Due to pandamic, etc .. we hadn't been here for quite some time, so weren't sure what to expect. It was excellent. Our host was charming, attentive yet discreet, offering delicious extras as he prepared our order. The food was amazingly good, and we had ordered quite a range - pizzas, pasta, steaks, all cooked superbly. To top it all the wine was great too, and very reasonably priced. A fabulous evening. We visited Sorrento recently to celebrate my husband's birthday and had a wonderful evening. Our host was so friendly and helpful that we felt we were dining in someone's own home. He produced extra dishes, soup and bruschetta and an Italian dessert as well as the starters and main course we had ordered all of which were delicious. Thank you Romano for such an excellent evening, we look forward to returning!

This is a new favourite, the food is amazing and although it’s not the most posh place I’ve been to, you’ve got to look past this and enjoy the personal touch offered by romolo. You have to come!!!

This small restaurant is above the shops, and on arrival you wonder if its going to be any good - so small, nothing special to look at. The owner welcomes you, takes your order and cooks your meal. The food is authentic and absolutely delicious. We had olives while we perused the menu, then enjoyed a delicous starter and main, following up with a slice of tiramasu - all expertly cooked and presented. If you want a more authentic meal, at a very reasonable price, this is the place to try! Highly recommended!

What an amazing experience we had at this lovely restaurant, delicious bruschetta, incredible Spaghetti Reale and Seafood Risotto. So nice to experience an authentic restaurant, lovely extras such as olives and cheese to start. Allow enough time if you’re going to the theatre as we were, we will definitely be back when next in Whitley Bay. Thank you to the lovely owner/chef/waiter who is a great multi tasker.

The best Italian restaurant in Whitley Bay. Ignore any negative reviewers, they just don’t have the capacity to fully appreciate this restaurant.

Don’t let looks fool you, you may think twice at dining here going off the front appearance but please get up those stairs and try out sorrentos. One Italian man does it all and produces delicious food. You get more than you ask for too as he brings out little taster gems, so you end up having a 5 course meal. Defo not a cookie cutter Italian restaurant but very quirky.

A must visit restaurant if you like Italian This is a true Italian restaurant and Romolo is the only guy in there, front of house and the most amazing chef He made us so welcome and don’t do the pizza and pasta do the true Italian seafood and steak! Strangely the best steak Diane and Pepper steak for a long time Romolo made us so welcome and yes, the restaurant is a little quirky and surreal but indulge it and enjoy the food and good wine too

Sorrento's is different. Tiny restaurant serving home cooked Italian style food. Very simple but authentic. Proprietor friendly but a one man band, so you have to be prepared to wait while he cooks, serves, prepares drinks etc. Good if you want home made style Italian cooking.

We went to Sorrento for the first time tonight. What a lovely man the Chef/Owner is. The food was amazing and, very reasonsable,as were the drinks. It was so nice to experience some genuine Italian food. We’ll be returning soon. Thanks Paul and Dawn

This is definitely a hidden gem, came across it by chance and so glad we did. Proprietor is most welcoming and modest nothing is to much trouble. The food is freshly prepared, looks lovely and tastes divine, the treats between courses were an added bonus. If you're in the area you would be daft not to pop in. My husband had a steak which melted in the mouth, the risotto was the best I've ever tasted and pizza is out of this world. We highly recommend the Sorrento Italian Restaurant!

A very nice restaurant run by the very pleasant Italian owner.Nice and small with an Italian feel about it ,a nice change from places like ASK Italian etc.The food starters, mains, deserts and coffee all perfectly presented and tasted delicious and reasonably priced.If your looking for a good old fashioned Italian Restaurant with good home cooking you must give this place a try

So happy this restaurant is open again after lockdown. This is by miles the best fresh home cooked food you can get. Had a lovely evening as always excellent service highly recommend.

Dined as a family of 5. We were looking for somewhere local to eat and decided to give this restaurant a try based on the reviews. We were definitely not disappointed. Such a pleasure to find something authentically Italian. Couldn't fault any of the food and my spaghetti carbonara was the best I've had. The complimentary dishes were an added bonus. Will be recommending to our local friends and will be going again.

Visited a few weeks ago for a family meal and we were impressed as usual. Sorrento is a lovely intimate restaurant with high quality, affordable Italian food and complementary dishes offered too which is a really nice touch. The owner is really friendly and creates a relaxed atmosphere, would highly recommend.

Dined there yesterday with my daughter. A very warm and welcoming host and a good choice of dishes on the menu. Food was delicious and we also received two complimentary dishes, soup and desert.

We've passed this place a few times and for some reason just not had the chance to check it out until last Saturday. Firstly I'd checked on here so I knew it was a small quirky place looking at the photos. I wasn't in the mood for anywhere too busy and we certainly got that. Although having the restaurant to ourselves suited me just fine. It's a shame that on a Saturday we were the only ones in (for the owner.) Don't let that put you off! The service was very friendly from the guy who I assume owns it. The food was lovely and it was a very pleasant experience. I wonder if the fact that the council have closed Park View has had a detrimental impact on the restaurant?When we eat out I sometimes can't be bothered with a big bustling restaurant chain. So I love these smaller unusual type restaurants that do proper home cooked food. I just hope business picks up for the restaurant compared to Saturday as it would be a shame to lose this nice little Italian restaurant. We'll definitely be back in the future and would recommend dining here if you're looking for a cosy little Italian restaurant in Whitley Bay.

Just been there tonight meal was amazing ,lots of little extra dishes on the house which was a lovely touch my daughters said best ever could eat there every night ,not the latest micro brewery new place to be but it was beautiful food and guy was just so lovely couldn’t do enough for you ,hope he does well

We had a very nice meal in this small homely restaurant. The owner cooked and served a very nice evening meal for 3 with a nice bottle of wine. An overall very pleasant experience Will definitely visit this little Alexandrian oasis in the future.

My husband and I had the garlic mushroom starter, which was perfect. Then he had the Lasagna Sorrento, which he said was one of the best lasagnas he'd ever tasted. I had the Panna Prosciutto Funghi (I think that was the name of it) and it was superb. The portions were just the right size, and the man running the show was very friendly and welcoming. He had us try some soup on the house before our meals came out also, and it was awesome. Highly recommend!

Lovely and cosy ! The food was amazing and so fresh best we’ve ever had ...the man was so kind and stayed open after hours witch was lovely of him ! Food is fresh and original Italian recipe from a traditional Italian chef will be a regular . Thank you , you should be very proud of your self and would definitely recommend

We had a Daddy and Doughter night last week and we had a great night!, the food and service was great, I would recommend this restaurant for really good home cooking!, we will defo go back!!

We went here on a Sunday evening and I must say this is the only place where you will get fresh home cooked food. This restaurant is very small but the food absolutely blew me away it was the best I have ever had. Everything was perfect it was fresh and home cooked. The gentleman who was front of house served us quickly which I love and also cooked our meal in the back. I will be returning this is my new favourite restaurant. I can’t believe I didn’t know this was here.

We chose a very quiet night to try out this tiny (but well formed) restaurant but the food did not disappoint. All cooked to order and with many complimentary courses.The only downside is that cards are not accepted but there is a cashpoint nearby.

We arrived with friends for lunch, ordered our drinks whilst we checked out the menu, as we chatted a nice surprise plate of complimentary tasters arrived for the four of us, very nice indeed. My bruschetta and my wife’s garlic mushrooms were utterly delicious. So we had more wine. As our mains were being cooked a taster bowl of soup arrived, all too much I thought but very nice it was. Our mains duly arrived, hot, freshly cooked and nicely presented; a large bowl of mussels, chicken breast in creamy mushroom sauce, arrabbiata and a lasgagna all supremely delicious, thank you chef Romano.Thinking that we were finished eating and sitting back to enjoy the last of our wine, a small serving of fresh delicious crepe with cream and raspberry arrived, again a very nice touch to finish with. Not a posh place with inflated prices, but a done to earth authentic Italian restaurant, great Italian chef who takes delight in looking after his customers. There is no rush to get you out the door, take your time to enjoy. We will certainly be back, no doubt about that. Super duper!!

We had an excellent meal here. Now be careful you could miss the place. It is upstairs and is quite small but comfortable. The owner cooks and serves for you delicious food. I will certainly be back and recommend it to family and friends.

Myself and partner visited this restaurant this evening for the first time. It was fantastic. We were given three (yes three) treats each,which perfectly combined with our starters and main courses. All food cooked from fresh - and such a nice feeling to eat in a truely homemade restaurant, rather than the chains with flood cities and high streets these days. We will be back very soon! We stayed in Whitley Bay for the weekend and found this place by chance. The waiter/chef was excellent and the food was amazing- all cooked from fresh. My son said it was the best pizza he has ever had. Would definitely visit again!

As always our visit to Sorrento was outstanding. A very warm welcome, followed by a fantastic meal. We have visited several times and each and every time we receive amazing quality food and service.

Visited Sorrento Italian Restaurant recently with family and it was a terrific experience. Delicious free little starters were a much appreciated beginning to the evening. We all ordered different meals and each one was very tasty. The proprietor does a terrific job cooking, serving and making sure everyone is taken care off. We will certainly be back.

I was looking for an Italian restaurant to take my mum out for dinner and when searching the internet came across this restaurant. So pleased I did. My Mum is very hard to please so it is always difficult to choose somewhere but she loved this place, as did I. I know a restaurant is great when my Mum finishes her meal which is exactly what she did. The restaurant is lovely, with a fantastic host/chef who is attentive to guests despite his dual role. The lovely extra starters and dessert was such a lovely touch and tasted great. We could not fault a thing. Would come back in a heartbeat and would recommend to anyone and everyone.

We ate here for the first time last night and it was great! Lovely little free starters before we even got to what we ordered and friendly welcoming service. The same lovely man serves and cooks and we felt very well taken care of. We will definitely be back! Lovely wine too :-)

Blink and you'd miss this place but it is worth finding; a gem of a place! Completely unique, and the most amazing, genuine host. It's so authentic it felt the same as some of the places I'd visited in Italy, quirky decor and beautiful food. My husband and I were looked after liked we'd visited someone's home. Please find out this place as it's so different and the chef/host is extremely welcoming! We'll be back and next time we'll bring the kids! P.S the Pinot Grigio is beautiful!!!

I have eaten in the restaurant but they also do takeaway which I don't think may people know. It's a small upstairs place (about 6 tables) run by one person but don't let out you off- the food is tasty and the owner is friendly - he once even made a dessert on request for us

I never leave Trip Advisor reviews, but felt I needed to for this place. Lovely meal with family tonight - great menu with lots of things you never usually see. We ordered starters (if you’ve never tried stracciatella do so at once) and mains, and got breadsticks, a wee sampler plate and dessert thrown in. Excellent wine too! The waiter / chef / owner was also super friendly. If you want bog standard, high street, out the kitchen fast ‘Italian’, this is not for you. If you want freshly prepared, authentic food in a friendly atmosphere, then go at once; take my car, it’s wonderful.

My friend and I booked a meal at this restaurant prior to going to the theatre. The food was good, the chef/waiter offering us a complimentary bowl of soup while the starter was being prepared. However the whole meal took so long to prepare and serve that we had to rush in order to arrive at the theatre and therefore were unable to order a dessert or take up the offer of complimentary ice cream. I appreciate this was a quiet Sunday night but as there was only one other couple there was little atmosphere and I doubt that I will return.

Beautiful meal, freshly cooked. Really lovely, very efficient owner who successfully fulfilled the roles of chef and waiter. Wish we lived nearer. This fabulous little gem would be visited by us regularly.

A group of fifteen of us needed a meal within a short time as we were playing in a concert. We had been a bit anxious because there was only one chef and the clock was ticking. But the wait was well worth it, and our meals were delicious: tasty, hot and genuinely Italian. He deserved our congratulations.

Popped in on this cold rainy evening just for a main course and was treated to a bit of tasting meal. Ordered our main course and we were brought complimentary soup and Italian tapas whilst we were waiting. A lovely touch. We both had tagliatele carbonara which was authentic and really nice. We were then treated to a tiramisu taster. Now sitting having a coffee after a thoroughly unexpected experience. We will be back

I really enjoyed here. The food was all fresh and very tasty. We visited on a Saturday lunch time. We were the only people in the restaurant but that didn’t both us as was music playing and was cosy. I think people may not realise it is open.

We’d noticed Sorrento’s had reopened but weren’t sure quite what to expect given the outside isn’t particularly Inviting. That said, the new owner could not have been more friendly, and personally prepared the wonderful meals to make sure we’d want to come back. A small intimate restaurant, serving authentic Italian food, in a very nice atmosphere and outstanding customer service. Deserving of every success, we’ll be back for sure!

Had a really lovely meal at Sorrento tonight. We live just round the corner but hadn't been for years as we hadn't been impressed when we last went (under previous ownership) but having seen recent reviews and seeing it had changed hands gave it another try.

We only had 3 standard starters & 3 mains (pizza/pasta) a few beers & bill was £78! We got extras that I'm assuming we must had paid for that we didn't order?! We were the only 3 people in the place & I'm really not very not surprised. Pizza was good everything else was OK but certainly not over £25 a head standard - disappointed overall - real shame as most reviews had been so positive.

Visited last night on a bleak evening and experienced the most wonderful food with superb friendly service. We were the only customers at the time and we will be returning shortly with family and friends. Don’t let the small entrance deter you from entering and experiencing the wonderful food, service and hospitality. Gluten free options for my wife were not a problem and we were provided with complimentary homemade bread and soup. Give it a go and support local businesses

So glad my Mam and dad introduced us to this hidden gem restaurant. All of the food is amazing!!! We got lots of food made for us that we didn’t order and all of it was delicious. Very friendly and lovely atmosphere can’t wait to go back soon.
