Looked inviting from the outside so decided to give this establishment a try. Spotless interior , big menu with many tempting options. Our coffee was spot on , just how we like it "proper coffee." Wifey had bacon, brie and cranberry panini which she said was delicious. Myself chicken , bacon and pesto sandwich with granary bread. Thick slices of gorgeous bread with a well packed filling , it was very satisfying. Very good service and highly recommend.

Came here a few years ago and wanted to return. We have always recommended people to visit. The waitress (middle aged lady) didn't greet us or smile. We then waited 15 mins to order our food. 30 mins later our toast came out followed 10 mins by our breakfast. We both love a fry up. But it's a shame to say we both were a little disappointed. The bacon looked like it hadn't touched the pan, the sausages were cold with no flavour and the hash brown was soggy... After we paid, we left feeling unsatisfied and queezy. It's a shame we have read all the recent lovely reviews, we are both local and enjoy eating out regularly. But we will not be returning or recommending again.

I popped into Sophie’s Kitchen for a light lunch and had the tastiest toastie ever. Stilton and mango chutney, it was delicious! Nicely presented and with a fresh crisp side salad. Well filled toastie, oozing out the sides and tasted simply great! I will definitely be back. The tea shop is bright and airy with decent space between each table. Staff were friendly and service really quick. Well done Sophie’s Kitchen, you have another satisfied customer.

Paid Sophie's a visit early March and have to say we had a very nice brunch, all freshly made and very tasty, only thing to mention it seemed there was only one serving in the main, another behind the counter taking orders and obviously the payments, who eventually did a bit of serving by spotting ours had been on the serving hatch for a while longer than could have been (good job it was a cold order if it had been a hot order I think it may have been refused). That aside (hopefully a one off), the place was very clean tidy and a very nice place to visit.

We have visited here before and we were very impressed: a lovely atmosphere/décor, very friendly staff, varied menu and very nice food. The portions are massive so you never leave hungry. Such a nice change from the usual cost coffees and it's nice to support independent, local industries.

I had wanted to go here for some time, but it often seemed to be closed, however finally managed to get in there, and I will not bother again. There were two ladies seated at a table, and I sat down and waited and waited, whilst the Waitress chatted to the two ladies all about her upcoming cruise. Eventually she found time and handed me a menu and another Waitress came out and took my order. For the price paid, the portions are meagre and I do not eat a lot. Latte at £3.05 was not the cheapest but nice, although I had to ask for the sugar. All in all, with the amount of coffee shops in Maldon, I will not bother with this one again. It is nicely located and clean, but not the cheapest and I found the service unacceptable.

Popped in for a coffee, tea and two scones. Tea came in large pot and coffee in small cup. Scone was small but nice. Service was good and staff friendly. My only bug was no prices displayed on board. As my bill for what I had was a lot less than expected for the £12-35 I paid

We always try to use independent coffee shops if we can instead of the chain stores. We were greeted into the shop as if we were friends and our order was quickly taken and a tab left open if we wanted to add anything. We ordered a latte, pot of tea and food. The pot was of generous size and good quality tea which was excellent value. The carrot cake was delicious and my husband had a bacon sandwich and he said it was the best he had eaten. “Proper” bacon as beautiful fresh bakery bread. The tea room is so bright, clean and airy and I loved the fresh flowers on the tables as a nice touch. The facilities were great, clean toilet with nice toiletries. We could not fault the whole “feel” of the place, we could have stayed all day and ate ourselves through the menu! We will definitely be back when visiting the area.

Would highly recommend this restaurant. We initially stopped for coffees which were lovely and the service was very friendly. After a walk round Maldon we decided to go back for lunch. We would definitely go back should we do a return visit to Maldon. Well done ladies!

Excellent all round Amazing food. We had a big breakfast and the smoked salmon, prawn and Marie Rose sauce sandwich. Both were very well presented and good quality. The sandwich was bulging! We also had the beans on toast for our two year old and the presentation was perfect - beans in a bowl and the toast separate. A much tidier way to help a two year old eat it. And the portion was the perfect size. So often places have children’s menus but don’t seem to realise that a two year isn’t going to eat the same amount as a twelve year old. But Sophie’s had it spot on. The coffee was great, the atmosphere was calm and the tables were spotlessly clean. Really, really lovely staff. Although we didn’t call back in later for cake we will definitely be back for some. The best eating out experience we’ve had for a very long time. Everything was spot on.

Spoken to in a disgusting manner by a young girl with long brown hair at the door today. First words were "there's no way you're from the same family that's not possible". To which I replied yes we are, instead of asking us for identification which we could have provided easily, she just said "we're expecting a visit". I told her that the way she had spoken to us is disgusting and she replied "that's the rules". Leaving us feeling embarrassed and upset. Your staff need to be taught some manners and made aware of family dynamics and not make people feel ashamed and embarrassed. We will never ever be spending our money in this place.

Popped into Sophie's kitchen today for some takeaway coffee's. Waited to be asked in and ordered. To be met by two young ladies, after ordering it was quite obvious that they were talking quite openly about my husband and daughters partner as they were standing outside waiting. My daughter told them they were waiting for us outside as we had dogs with us. They were in no hurry to serve us as they stood behind the counter having their own conversation. People were waiting to order at tables and pay to which they were ignored. We went there today to support local businesses, if this is how you're met I will not be using it again.Think hard about your employer's as this will only help your business.

Sophie's Kitchen is the most wonderful little eatery. I'm a coffee snob, and her coffee is incredible. The carrot cake is my favourite and my daughter loves a teacake. However, we were regulars before lockdown and her food is delicious. Jacket potato, sandwiches, toasties, salads... I've tried them all. It's one of my fave lunch places and top coffee shop. Visited with my family for my birthday for afternoon tea. We had a voucher which they accepted fine and the food was lovely and presented nicely. The only problem I had was when paying at the end. 4 members of my family ordered tea and they only brought over 3 tea pots, when we asked why 2 people had to share a tea pot; as this meant they had less tea, we was told they would get a refill as they had the same tea, which we thought was fine. We also order 3 cokes so when it came time to pay all we had to do was pay for the 3 cokes but they then told us we had to pay for the refill of the tea. They stated that they had run out of single person tea pot so we had receive 3 two people tea pots so the people who had one each had actually got extra tea so that’s why we had to pay for the refill which would have been fine if they had told us this when we asked but they didn’t they just said they would get a refill hence having to share. They did then take the extra tea pot off but then having to pay £8.50 for 3 regular cokes is a joke. I would love to know how much it is per coke as it’s working out to £2.83 recurring so it doesn’t even split equally. This really ended the experience on a bad note but if they had just explained the tea situation in the first place it wouldn’t ‘not have been as bad. But nearly £3 for a coke is an absolute joke. I would recommend but just make sure you triple ask the question so you don’t get stung at the end of your meal.

Overall very good experience, staff were polite, helpful and food was presented well, we were sharing sandwiches but did not just get the usual spare plate presented to us, but the shared food was nicely laid out on two plates with the appropriate dressings. Well done girls. HOWEVER, our only reservation was that a very elderly gentleman using a walker and possibly not as 'tidy' as others , was I think not treated with care. Not one member of staff came to assist him getting in the door and when taking his order and bringing his order to the table no attempt at interaction of any kind was made. No-one knows another's circumstances and this was a missed opportunity to bring a little social interaction into the life of another. Had this been a part of the service I would have given this 4 stars but it saddened me to see a lonely customer ignored. Otherwise a good experience.

They said that they had only been open a week and we had a chat about old times in Maldon. The room was very bright and colourful and very clean. We were shown to a table, which was immediately cleaned and we were given a menu. They were very busy and at one point all the tables were occupied but our drinks arrived quickly and we were told that there would be a wait for the fool because they were so busy. The atmosphere here was really good the the large windows all round allowed us to people watch and with the busy high street outside there was a lot to keep our attention. We were not in any hurry but we were constantly kept up-to-date about our order. My wife and I ordered sandwiches and when they came with a salad on the side we were not disappointed. Staff haven't got a clue. Took ages to take order and still got it wrong. I had chicken and my brother had steak pie which he gave up on as pastry was like trying to eat a brick, chips pale as pale can be. Tea and coffee just about OK. Don't waste your money or time.

Limited menu, service was brilliant as was my nachos, but the salsa and guacamole were poor. The burgers were not the best but The chips were good.

Visited The Queens Head last night with my fiancée to try their new carvery all you can eat roast dinner. The food was outstanding, when they say all you can eat they really mean it, and it includes meat unlike any other I’ve been too. The meat was cooked to perfection, the gammon was the best I’ve had and there was 4 meats to choose from. The chef was previously a butcher and knows how to cook and carve, it was so yummy. There was a good selection of potato’s, yorkies and veg, also all really yummy. The potatoes were crispy outside and fluffy inside and the gravy was a good thickness and also very tasty as it’s made from the meat juices. I was hesitant trying an all you can eat carvery, however this blew other roasts I have tried in Essex out the water. It was as good as an expensive roast that you would find in a bistro pub. My fiancée and I are making our way round local pubs trying their roast dinners and this flew straight to the top of our list! Also - the homemade icecream is outstanding and i’d urge that people try it. It’s really creamy and they have lots of options. Thank you for a lovely dinner!

I was recommended this Cafe by a friend who has a somewhat dubious reputation and nature. But unlike the time in Prague which we won't mention, this cafe was fantastic. I had a delicious burger and a slab of cake which was good for 2 sittings. I would definitely go back here.

We nipped in yesterday but even though they were just about to close (it was 4pm and we hadn't realised) they still took our order and served us. We had three lovely waffles. Really welcoming service and so grateful that they stayed open for us as the kids really enjoyed it. Lovely little place as well.
