Got to be the top gaff in Bristol. Seasonal, thoughtfully sourced and 10/10 food at reasonable prices. Caters for all; dishes can be shared or you can have your own as you like. Drinks menu and wine list is unique and great. Staff are absolutely lovely. What more could you ask for!

Really lovely food, staff were absolutely excellent and very accommodating. Wanted to try everything and were super helpful in recommending. A couple veggie options on the menu but they are more than happy to alter some of their other mains to ensure everyone’s happy!

Great staff, lovely location. Slightly disappointed with food. Ordered salad that came with goats cheese but not listed in ingreidients. Hate Goats cheese and it's not a subtle flavour so ruined the dish for me. I would go back though.

It is a real shame our experience with the service in this very noisy and crammed establishment was so poor, because the food is amazing! It is not the first time I have observed poor service in british restaurants. The waiting times are long, desserts are being forgotten... Why? The cuisine there is amazing so why waste it on bad service? Is it possible for waiters in this country to care about their job? Are they too underpaid?

Lovely food, nice service and atmosphere!

I am really sad to have to write this review. We were at Sonny before, probably 1 year ago in February time. We had good and a lovely time then. We hadn't been in a while, so we decided to return after the refurbishment. As before, the portion sizes are quite substantial, so you'd have to be able to eat a horse to have a 3 course a la carte dinner. We went for a shared starter and 2 mains. We had the lobster half this time. It was quite tough, so the taste wasn't amazing, and I don't think the team thought this through when putting it on the menu. I got extra napkins, but the claw could have been prepared better, so I wouldn't have to use brute force to get it open (only to land on some dry meat). The beans and courgette that came with were ok. I am not sure whether the lobster was fresh or frozen or just not cooked in a way that would have yielded a more butter soft texture. We also had the sirloin, which changed to rump steak as they had run out. The meat was very chewy, not tendre and succulent. We also had a cocktail and a large glass of wine. Both were nice. I was just disappointed that for over £100, ordering their two most expensive dishes, we got really let down on the food. Maybe try the pasta next time....

A great eating experience. Really top food that isn’t over complicated but just right. Went for lunch today on the terrace and both servers were fantastic.

We had a family event at the restaurant with 22 people. The arrangements beforehand were impeccable and the dinner itself was truly exquisite, fabulous fresh flavours and beautifully presented. It was everything we had hoped for and Jenna, Kaj and the rest of the staff were thoroughly positive, friendly and professional. Thank you for a perfect evening!

This is our third time dining here and again, it was amazing! Fresh ingredients blended together to create simple and yet utterly delicious plates. Complimented by knowledgeable and friendly service. A gem in a side street of Bristol.

To start, I merely present you with the facts. Three diners were marking a twentieth birthday. Starters - three pizzette for £36.00 pounds. These are small. The plates are large. Nobody is fooled. Two of the three diners are vegetarian, so we asked if the ham could be removed. It was; no extra ingredients were added. Still £36.00. Mains - one rib eye. The best dish of the meal. Two diners ate scarpaccia, which is essentially a savoury cake/ omelette-type dish. Each diner was presented with a bland scraping from the corner of an oven dish, with a handful of basil/ mint leaves scattered beside. £18.00 each. Both left hungry. No bread. No sauce to call for it. No side vegetables. No clue. Dessert - one tiramisu. (Two diners could not face any more disappointment, so declined.) No taste of alcohol. Watery base. No coffee machine. No espresso. We each had a small glass of wine. One was over-charged - the Soave. £11.00 per glass. We could not face quibbling, as the spiritless affair meant we could not leave fast enough. We have eaten here before. They have recently had a refit. You are paying through the nose for it, while they smugly coast on a reputation that is past its sell-buy date. This place is masquerading as Italian-influenced. Italians would weep at the poor quality and general lack of conviviality and largesse. The total bill was £150.00. It was the most memorable part of the meal and shall never be forgotten. They offer the same food at half the price as part of a set meal at other times of the week. You'd still be a wise to steer clear, particularly if you're a vegetarian. Spend your hard-earned money on a good Italian cookbook and a few quality ingredients, and I'm sure you'll have a much better meal at home.

I’ve enjoyed lots of beautiful meals at Sonny Stores and was so excited that it had reopened on Birch Road. We had quite a mixed experience on one of their first Fridays after reopening. Service was friendly and warm, and initially very attentive but it was busy, noisy and hot and as the room got busier service became quite slow. We had to work pretty hard to catch our server’s eye to order wine which contrasted to amazing service earlier in the meal. It’s great that they’re popular but it felt like service and ability to have a conversation were both casualties to this. The food was mainly great but the pasta dish we ordered was so salty, it was almost unpleasant to eat. I struggled to taste any flavours other than salt. Both starters, my partner’s main and our desserts were delicious and generous portions. I feel a bit sad that fitting in more tables has made what has been a lovely experience a bit patchy. We’ll try again but probably not for a while and definitely not on a busy Friday evening.

Had the best ever birthday meal here in December. Excellent attentive service, thoughtful range of drinks and out of this world food. We visited the pop up in Quaker’s friars which was similarly excellent food but less convincing service. love love love

We were really looking forward to this Meal for my boyfriend's birthday, however we were both extremely disappointed. The food was overly salty, and the service, though polite was extremely slow. We were at the Friary pop-up and were not sure whether the charm of and experience we had heard about with Sonny Stores was lost. I also put on the booking it was for a birthday and there was just no acknowledgment of this. It's the little touches that make an experience.

Nice and cozy. Our favourite was definitely the nduja pasta, and the desserts were amazing. Pizzetta was great flavour wise but very difficult to eat or share. Front of house staff were amazing and lovely, very helpful too. Kept changing the menu as we ate which was a little strange, and maybe seemed a bit unprepared considering how quiet it was. But we had a great time!

… but there’s no 4.5 star option. This restaurant is very good and you’re guaranteed to have a great time. Would definitely visit again. Visited while the restaurant was at its pop up location in Quakers Friars which is a nice venue but lacks the cosy feel of Sonny’s home in Southville. Glad they were able to keep trading during the refurb with this temporary move! Service is excellent, lots of very attentive, friendly, knowledgeable staff. We shared 2 starters, 2 mains and 2 desserts between the 2 of us which was an enjoyable way of experiencing a variety of dishes. The reason for 4/4.5 rating is that some of the dishes are so good they knock others out of the park, leaving you with a feeling of having to order the ‘right’ items from the menu. Being overly fussy here, like I say, would definitely go back and make sure to order as many pasta dishes as possible!

We tried out the pop-up in Quakers Friars for Dinner. The building is stunning and a great backdrop for a brilliant evening - attentive and helpful staff team, outstanding meals and a great atmosphere. The menu is clearly based on fresh, seasonal ingredients, and the way these were handled by the chef was masterful. Every one in our group thought they had made the best possible choice!

What a place! It really has my heart. We've eaten here a number of times and it never ever let's us down. The staff are incredibly friendly and knowledgeable with the many which makes ordering a dream for allergy sufferers as they will always tailor it and work with you so that you don't feel like you are missing out. The last occasion was for my fiancé's 30th. I was a nightmare with last minute changes and they were so accommodating and upfront with what they could sort for me and remained their lovely, friendly selves throughout. Already planning our next visit and celebration as can't think of anywhere we'd rather do it! Thanks to the whole team - you are fab!

Came away with the impression that the restaurant is perhaps somewhat overhyped, though for the most part the food was very good. Interesting wine list, service attentive albeit rather informal (left to hang and retrieve our own coats). Antipasti were underwhelming but the main (brill) and pudding (tiramisu) were superb. The prices of some dishes- notably the pasta- seem to have got out of hand, which is probably the biggest barrier to us becoming regulars.

This is my fourth time at this amazing restaurant. All of us thought the food was so good that the plates were left completely clean. We used bread to mop up all the sauce! The photo says it all - you will not regret coming here (especially for their £25 lunch deal).

I came for a drink before and it’s been on my list of restaurants to try and it did not disappoint! The food was so fresh and incredible, I had the £25 set menu and it was very good for its money!! The wine was amazing and I loved that the drink and cocktail menu had a good range!! The service was incredible, we were served by Jenna who made sure everything was perfect and she was so nice and friendly, the service was equally as good when I just came in for a drink before!! First time at the Sonny Stores. I had really high expectations since my brother as been raving about this place for ages. It might have been bad luck but it didn't went as I was expecting at all. Most of the things on the menu were not available. The famous Pizzeta was one of those items.( Apparently the dough didn't rise) We only had pretty much 2 choices. The pasta portions were extremely small and there was not enough filling. The lamb was tender, the pumpkin was one of the best I tried but the beans were really hard. Same situation with the desserts. There was no tiramisu, the Pannacotta didn't settle and there was no more chocolate mousse. The staff was amazing, they were really helpful and I could see they were having a bad day. I will definitely return again. Hopefully it will go better next time.

Sonny Stores remains such a treat and a go-to on all special occasions. I have been in Bristol for over ten years and it's remains the most consistent place I have ever eaten out at terms of delicious food and warm service. They recently hosted 12 of us for my birthday and it was an absolute dream - Jenna is such a warm and generous host and the food never fails to satisfy. Best Tiramisu in Bristol. Decent food, small portions, not VFM in my opinion

Fab food, super service and delicious drinks!

Lovely food, tasted delicious and was beautifully presented. The cost was reasonable for the food. I wouldn't pay more. The decor for me was too basic. For the fabulous food and its cost, I'd expect something a little more comfortable and interesting. But all in all a very nice experience and recommended.

We had heard so much about this spot for months and month and we were desperate to get a booking. So rarely does such a place truly live up to the hype. But you had better believe it this time. The portions sizes left us unbuttoning our jeans, the staff were amazing and made us cozy outside with our massive pram, the chefs absolutely smashed the dishes, the menu, sourcing the food, plating, desserts. The wine menu was incredible well put together and as is so often forgotten…. Great coffee to finish! So impressed, thank you

I'm not usually one to be taken in by social media, but we basically booked a weekend in Bristol just to come here after seeing photos of the food on Instagram. Very worth it! Even considering how expensive the trains are from London :( . Had dinner on Saturday night and it was nice and buzzy in there. The staff were all super friendly/ helpful and the menu/ wine list was full of exciting stuff. When we were worried about over ordering they offered us a half portion of the pasta, which was a great solution! All in all it was a perfect night and I only wish it was in London

We were pleased that we could get a last minute table for two. Couldn’t fault the food. We shared olives and delicious prawns to start. This charming restaurant in Bristol offers a cosy environment, perfect for a dinner with your couple or friends. The food was quite nice. Probably the combination of flavours was not as rich as in other restaurants in Bristol, but the everything was well cooked. The staff was really friendly and nice. They explained everything in the menu and were really attentive.

Some of the most amazing food I’ve ever eaten! The staff are so friendly, and the atmosphere is vibrant and welcoming. I’ll be coming back for my 4th visit soon!

We stopped in here without a reservation; they were so wonderful making space to accommodate us. The service couldn't be faulted. The food was also outstanding. As we were pushed for time, it was all served at once for us, again brilliant service. All the plates were delicious, but there were some roasted tomatoes and homemade foccacia that I could have just eaten on repeat until I passed out. We will go back and next time we'll stay longer and eat more!

I’ve been wanting to visit Sonny Stores for some time. I like that it’s a small little restaurant with friendly and inviting vibes. Great and cosy atmosphere too. Service was good and attentive and the staff took time to explain the menu to us and offer recommendations. The food however was a bit of a letdown. The portion for every dish was rather sad given how expensive the food was. The trout that was served as antipasti was just a tiny piece of trout (not even a proper slice) spread across a leaf of salad. I was expecting a lot for a £30 ravioli dish as my main, but the presentation was subpar with a few raviolis spread across the plate here and there. One of the clams in the spaghetti dish that my friend had wasn’t washed properly leaving a lot of sand in the plate. We gave feedback to the staff during our meal but instead of acknowledging the suboptimal standard we were given excuses of how difficult it is to ensure every single clam is cleaned properly although she offered to inform the kitchen of our experience. We had antipasti, main dish and dessert but I left the restaurant hungry still. Overall, great vibe. Food was decent overall but not exceptional as you would expect from an expensive restaurant. Would I return? Probably not for dinner service, although if they offer cheaper lunch deal but I might consider coming back.

Had a Christmas box from Sonny Stores two years ago which was amazing and really wanted to come to the restaurant. Finally had a ladies’ lunch last week and it didn’t disappoint! Such an uplifting atmosphere and the food was outstanding. To top it all off the wine list and service was top notch. Can’t wait to come back!

This was our second trip to Sonny Stores this year for a a family celebration and both occasions have been great. The atmosphere is relaxed and friendly and the service attentive and helpful even on a busy Friday night, but it is the food that shines. The standouts for me this visit were the Devon prawns, sweet and perfectly cooked, I had the Agnoli with pigeon, a gorgeous depth of flavour in this dish that was just lovely. And the Panna cotta with pistachio pine nut and rosemary to finish was among the best panne cotta I’ve ever had. All in all our second visit didn’t disappoint, this isn’t fancy over complicated fare but really good food cooked superbly. We’ll be back !

Was really excited to come but can’t say I’ve ever been as underwhelmed. The food is very expensive for the amount of effort that’s gone into the dishes, so bland. £18 for a single artichoke with a small amount of unseasoned greens and lentils. Service was poor too, didn’t get our bread until we’d finished all of our dishes, 50 minutes after we ordered.

We had the best meal ever. Food fantastic, service by Gemma, very friendly, informative and nothing too much trouble. One of our group is vegan and Gemma pointed out a selection of dishes that either are vegan or could be adapted to be vegan. Eating here is truly one of the best decisions I make every time. Pegs and his team are master craftspeople at what they do. Exceptional food, incredible flavour and of the best restaurants in Bristol and the South West.

Had been wanting to go here for a while and the wait did not disappoint. The pasta options were so difficult to choose from, especially as they change the menu seasonally. The ravioli was divine and the prawn starter was something special. The espresso martinis stole the show for us! Genuinely so tasty that we kept getting more. It’s lovely for a date night with cosy vibes but equally had a lively atmosphere which made it fun.

We found our trip a little underwhelming. Firstly our table was not ready at the time booked, and neither were the tables of several couples behind us. There isn’t much room to wait comfortably and it leaves everyone (waitresses & existing tables) feeling awkward. We were seated on plastic chairs and continued to order. The food was extremely pricey. The ‘pork shoulder’ pasta was in-fact just minced pork and spaghetti and for £22 a bowl, we expected a little more. The entire menu is on a blackboard which was particularly hard to read and we were advised to take a photo? Not a great experience for a restaurant with a £175 bill for 4 people including the cheapest house white. Won’t be recommending or rushing back.

Think we might have been unlucky with the food given the rave reviews elsewhere. We're pescatarian which is normally fine and there were some good choices but was surprised about the amount of meat on the menu (even the fish dish has pancetta which we asked to be removed, which is obviously fine but it means there isn't a main fish dish where we could've tried the whole thing in the way it was designed by the chef). The bean stew is totally odd in this setting. Very much a 'whats left in my fridge on a Wednesday night' vibe, not really visually appealing and was so salty that my partner left half of it (I've genuinely never seen her leave food before). On the whole though the food was fine, just perhaps not quite meeting expectation at this price point. My main gripe is the lack of any attempt whatsoever to soundproof this space. If you are going pack this many tables in to a front room, please please please put some soft furnishings around the place, or use ceiling dampeners (e.g. at Cor up the road). Its really loud and materially affects your experience. Some curtains, cushions, wall hangings, anything and it's so easy to do. The service was excellent, very attentive, friendly and genuine. Although the contagion of automatically adding a 'discretionary' 12.5% service charge continues to prevail!

Was looking forward to trying Sonny Stores due to its reviews, but ended up disappointed. The pasta was largely tasteless, particularly the vegetarian tagliatelle which had a very bland green sauce on it. For what was served, it was also significantly overpriced. Service was generally good, but there are far better Italian restaurants around for much less.

Overrated food. I had hoped for better, titamisu? Anyone can make it, uncomfortable seating, it's like a workman's cafe. Ignore the hype. Only the service was decent.

I had such high hopes. I love fine dining and go to as many restaurants as I can. This place has a reputation. But the reality was a cafe type place in the middle of a slightly rough neighbourhood of Bristol with very uncomfortable seating that served very average food. Service was OK but I had to look for the waitress to get my drink topped up. Their 'specialty ' is just a mini pizza thing you can get anywhere frankly. Better places around.

Excellent lunch here, had the red mullet and the tagliarini aka spaghetti 🤣 Great service, dishes came out quickly, perfectly cooked with great flavours. Lost and grounded "I want to go to the sun" IPA and sangiovese/merlot for drinks and the frangipane tart and coffee to finish made it a real treat.

We thoroughly enjoyed our night at Sonny Stores. The buzz in the restaurant was so good that we didn't even realise there was music playing until late on! The menu subtly follows the Italian menu format (primi piatti, secondi piatti) but there's no pressure/indication to follow this format and you can pick and choose as you like. Great, seasonal food prepared expertly. Really comforting and homely feel to the food, and love in every dish. Desserts were indulgent and delicious. Warm, quick service. I've been wanting to go since they opened and we loved it!

Brilliant little restaurant in Bristol, great food for all with different needs. This place has a local community atmosphere and buzz. Staff are really engaging and helpful. Highly recommended for a great small restaurant experience with the food to match. Lastly, if your dog is as part of your family, as mine is, there are outdoor tables for the extended family.

Absolutely wonderful neighbourhood restaurant. I came for lunch with a friend, the three course option for £25 was brilliant value - we devoured every bite. Service was friendly and perfectly judged. This is a very very understated restaurant well out of the busy city centre, but the food is sensational simple good quality ingredients beautifully seasoned and presented with great flavours . If you are a fan of the River Cafe this will impress you, great simple Italian food . They deserve to do well

Charming location, though small and fairly hot in the summer. Staff were friendly if a bit overrun. The salt cod and tomatoes in entree were wonderful, and I'm not always the biggest tomato fan - the dressing was perfectly salty and complemented the fresh sweet tomatoes. I also thought the dessert was great, rich chocolate without being overwhelming and it had a nice texture. The coffee was very nice (not cheap though, damn, but £2.8 might be a typical price for Bristol?), and the seasonal soda was fresh and enjoyable. I was a little bit let down by the pasta. It was well cooked, properly al dente, but I found it a bit too mild and thought the confit garlic gave it an almost bitter taste. Overall, a lovely spot and the lunch deal is good value. I'd recommend!

Staff were lovely and very attentive. Food slightly above average, barely any pasta on the plate so therefore expensive for the amount given. Left feeling hungry....never a good sign.....

Came here for a special occasion to celebrate our son's graduation from Bristol U. Tiny, well-lit dining room, friendly service (albeit a bit slow at times), and superb food across the board. The housemade pasta in particular was excellent. Pricey but worth it.

Had a really lovely lunchtime meal here. Service was really friendly and food was amazing. Portion sizes were perfect. Great value set menu as well. Couldn't recommend highly enough.

Simply the best !! If they are on the menu, then do not miss the Trout starter and the Pork Chop main. The pork chop was amazing ! Then spoil yourself with the Frangipane tart. This was our second visit and I can't wait to return.
