Visited for lunch. Overpriced food and poor quality . Service was awful and not the fault of the young waiter who unfortunately had just started . Price for lasagne on the specials was extortionate ! Wouldn’t have minded but it was tasteless and I think chef forgot to add the sauce . Curry was tasty but sauce very watery . If the waiting staff had done a check back then would have told them at the time but no check back . We did say to the senior waitress about lasagne when collecting plates and the response was yeah ! . Waitress brought a glass of wine to table but left dirty glasses sitting ? When paying bill and asked if all ok when I said no I was told I should have told them at check back when I said we had no check back young lad who had just started was told off but actually was older lady who served us! Was given a bottle of wine as an apology . Much preferred to have had the uneaten food removed from bill but better than nothing .

Booked this hotel despite reading bad reviews, which by the way I don’t understand. What a beautiful hotel! We were greeted by Heidi one of the owners, a warm friendly welcome who had very kindly upgraded our room as we were staying for 5nights. The room was nearly as big as our home, beautifully furnished and decorated with all modern facilities in the bathroom. Very well appointed room at the front of the building. The hotel itself was decorated in the style of the age of the what once a doctors home, beautiful, with lovely look of an old hunting lodge. Befitting the area in which it stands in a countryside area. See photos. It has a reception, bar/lounge, breakfast come function room, dining room and toilets on the ground floor very spacious, all are cleaned to a very high standard as was our room.. Pretty little gardens with seating outside and car parking facilities including electric points. Very well thought out. The food was lovely and plentiful. The breakfast included was cereal, fruits and seeds/nuts. The Scottish breakfast which comprised of egg, bacon, sausage, beans, tomatoes, slices of soda bread and tatie scone. You also had toast with marmalade or jam, tea and coffee. Didn’t have to eat again until dinner in the evening it was so filling, and I’m a big eater generally. The meals in the evening were delicious and plentiful also, we ate there for 4 of the 5 evenings and were happy to do so. The steak, see photo was huge we couldn’t eat the chips it was so big. On the first night we had family over for my hubby’s birthday, we bounced this on the hotel last minute and they were very accommodating. We had no problems with the food all week, we were leaving early in the morning of our last day to come back to Cornwall, we weren’t having breakfast so asked if they could do us a packed lunch instead which they very kindly did. Above and beyond I would say. The owners, and it is a family business were great. I feel as we started as clients but ended as friends. We had a laugh with them, great discussions and hugs at the end. I find if you treat people well, you get the same back. All in all it’s a 10/10 from us and we have no hesitation in saying we will be back in the future. Thanks Heidi, Alec, Kim, Shona and the team. X

Booked this hotel as an dog-friendly overnight stop to break long drives to & from Scotland. Rather dated, 'period' feel to it, but everything very clean and the service was very friendly. Particularly appreciated being given a room with an opening directly onto the car park and close to the garden, very handy for loading & unloading and for letting our dog out for a wander late night & early morning. Comfortable, spacious room, good dinner & breakfast. Left feeling relaxed and recharged for the next 300 miles. We will be back.

Was left rather dissapointed despite reading good reviews. Booked a table on the phone before arriving as aware was close to food stopping. Was shown to the table straight away, unfortunately this was the only good part of the service. Had to wait 15 mins to order drinks despite staff walking past us numerous times and bar having no one else in. After ordering food, starters took 40 minutes to arrive. The main course was slightly quicker but the quality of the food was questionable. The sauce didn’t have any taste to it all and the veg had obviously been cooked hours prior as was very soft and tasteless. Was charged £117 for 3 of us, including soft drinks. Bar man then told us he had added it up wrong and overcharged us £10 - respect for his honesty! He refunded this as we were leaving. Would take a lot for me to go back again.

We went as Non Residents and I had read a few of the reviews prior but we decided to go and see for ourselves . We wondered what the fuss was all about as we had a great meal served by great staff and had a really enjoyable evening. The Steak Dinners we had were really good . We would recommend this place to anyone for a meal . Cheers to all ..............

The hotel is clean and aovely place to stay unfortunately the staff let it down ,as does the poor breakfast. The check in women was very rude and abrupt. The man working behind the bar and serving breakfast was rude and had no customer service skills. The breakfast was meant to be a buffet it was timned peaches and tinned pears with boxed ceral. There was no rolls padtries or bread. The waiter came to the table saying 'what do you want'? We asked for a menu and was told go get one from the bar! He then got the order wrong and it was replaced with microwave eggs which were stuck to the plate! Not worth £13. I refused to pay for this but was told only one breakfast could be refunded@ other guests in our party staying linger cancelled their breakfast. Very poor.

Came here for Sunday lunch en route to Lockerbie train station. The food was really less than average. We both ordered the Sunday roast, which happened to be a roast beef, and what was advertised as ”a rich jus”. It was in fact, a thin, watery gravy which was tasteless and very unpleasant, and the slices of beef (three) were grey and equally tasteless. The Yorkshire pudding tasted unpleasantly of silicon, and we were both left with an unpleasant aftertaste.. The vegetables, however, were fresh, and nicely cooked. The service was perfunctory at best, and definitely not warm or welcoming. A smile would go along way… The bill was over £40. I’m afraid I would definitely not return here, nor would I feel able to recommend this.

The hotel is lovely and full of period charm and the staff and food nothing to complain about at all, however I was put in the annex room at the rear of the building that made me feel like a burrower as the rooms are that low. The pillows are touching a slanting wall, and the chair to sit in at the other side would have been an impossibility unless I was a body contortionists. The only part of the room I could stand up in was the very centre for the length of the building. I had to move around all the furniture resulting in the pillows falling off the bed as there was no support for them otherwise the only place I could sit was at the very bottom of the bed, I could not even sit up in bed. To charge for these rooms is not good even though the cost was low. The hotel itself is great so ensure you have a room in that part otherwise you won’t sleep at all.

I had read the reviews and booked the hotel for an overnight stay on the way north. The hotel is just off the M74 and very convenient. The staff are nice and friendly and the check in/out was efficient. The room was a generous size and nice and clean. The on suite was a let down. The shower mixer was coming off the wall and the water that did come out was warm only, which was in contrast to the hot tap on the sink, which was very hot. Like most hotels you are at the mercy of your other guests and we were woken/kept awake by the shutting of doors. We had our evening meal in the hotel bar and that was very good, but breakfast was average, which was disappointing given other reviews.

Was on way home from a mammoth shop for Christmas at Gretna and stumbled upon the Sommerton house hotel we were both really hungry as hadn’t managed to fit in any food all day so hubby and I went in to ask if they could oblige us and give us anything to eat at 2.40pm in the day. The only thing they could offer was a turkey Christmas main course. Well that’s not a problem so we sat at the bar and the food that came was an absolute treat . Succulent turkey with ham underneath and stuffing in the middle all set to a very spec on plate . Delicious! Thank you to the lady who was so nice to offer apologetically the only meal she could give us . It was perfect!

We always seem to struggle for places to eat around Lockerbie so this was a new place to sample for a family dinner. It was bustling and the service was good.We ordered a pre dinner drink and I was surprised to only be offered Gordon's or Tanqueray when in the land of Gin production! The menu is substantial (with a few spelling errors) but I felt it had some really strange combinations on it - plaice goujons with rice AND potatoes? We were treated well and there was a nice atmosphere but it's not somewhere that I would be bothered about going back to.

Booked for lunch with a number of friends and were glad that they could accomodate 19 of us so close to Christmas. Decent selection on the menu and something to satisfy everyone. Orders for all courses were taken shortly after we were seated. The food we ordered arrived in a timely manner and was served on hot plates; and the bread rolls were still warm when they arrived at the table - nice! I can only vouch for the food I had - the winter soup was tasty, the beef tender and the vegetable platter plentiful and not overcooked. The Whim Wam (trifle) was a nice finish to our meal, or so I thought, but I'd forgotten about the mince pies and tea/coffee. The mince pies arrived warm, with fine pastry casings - very tasty.I'd say that the fixed price menu was good value and all our party left satisfied.

Usually eat elsewhere when in the area but thought we would give this a try and so glad we did. We ate early and it was fairly quiet but soon started filling up and looked like a mix of locals (which is a good sign) and guests. A cold and wet night but the atmosphere was good and staff welcoming. We were quickly given menus and chose the venison which was well cooked and very tasty. For dessert I chose sticky toffee pudding which was delicious and my husband chose ice cream which was huge and unfortunately he was unable to finish it. Visited at weekend and the food was awful! I don't understand how basic food can be cooked so badly. Cubed carrots and turnip were dried out and probably reheated. Potato's weren't much better and were cold. The chicken I had was as tough as old boots and the Yorkshire pudding with the roast beef was inedible, it could have been used as a frisbee it was so hard and over reheated. It doesn't say much about the kitchen staff if they think sending poor quality food out to paying customers is acceptable. The waiter and waitress could do to brush up on their people skills too. I will not be rushing back or recommending it. A few other diners over the weekend had the same opinion too.

After a very long drive through Peebles, Jedburgh,Hawick and Langholm we found ourselves eating out here and I'm very glad we finally found it! Didn't catch his name but the man behind the bar with glasses was very welcoming which in our experience is very rare. Food portions were large and the menu had a wide choice. Service was good as well. Both of us had the curry potato soup and although I wouldn't choose to have it again it was very nice to try. The main I had a lamb cutlets in a redcurrent jus which I doubt I'll find in a restaurant anywhere else, I thought it was very nice maybe lacking just a final ingredient or two? I'm not a chef but maybe adding tomato to it with a bit of a pepper might be what it needs. The ginger pudding at the end was fantastic as well. Place looks very nice, didn't like the decor in the toilets mind you and the main hallway could maybe do with an update. Will definitely come back one day.

This charming hotel still retains the "family" feel to it and is every bit as good as it always has been. When we lived up there is was a regular place for high days and holidays. I was even once interviewed there by BBC Scotland. The food is as well presented as ever arranged by an artist in the kitchen. Attractive looking food really makes you want to eat it, savour it and enjoy it. No photos of it as it did not last long.. We all went for different meals and opted to sit in the comfort of the bar. I have never been disappointed here and I must have been going to over twenty eight years, although I am now very much a visitor to these parts. Service was efficient and warmly carried out with that little hint of humour that lifts the eating experience. We were there to meet up with my son and his partner so it made it special for them too.All the staff are great here but Shona is especially good and friendly.I would unreservedly recommend this as somewhere to go out of your way to visit. I reserved a table for 5 on the 31st October for my mothers 70th birthday, I could not fault the waiting staff, the meal n the kindness shown to my mother that night. The food was amazing and we liked that the veg came separately, the waiting staff that served our table "mainly Rachel" could not do enough to make our night special. My mother woz presented with a bottle of wine for her birthday by the hotel which I thought was a lovely touch n made her night complete. A really big thank you to u all and I will recommend to others to give you their custom. We will definitely be back.

We had an appalling meal and not very good service. The barman got someone to get to our booking, but ignored my attempts to order a drink. The food was very poor, pigeon that grossly was over cooked, Trout that and venison as bad, when it came to puddings the apple strudel I had appeared to have been microwaved, the pastry was a was as soggy as the contents. My coffee was good, but my wife’s hot cholate was mainly sugar. When it came to paying we managed to get the bill but were ignored when it came to paying so left payment and walked out!

On route north we have often dined here with friends who live locally and never been disappointed. The menu is excellent, catering for me, a vegetarian and my wife who is coeliac. Would happily recommend this restaurant not just for the food but also for the friendly staff and pleasing decor.

Lush! I had the "mini mixed grill" and the portion size was extremely generous! Better yet, this is the only restraunt I've been to that can cook a steak to absolute perfection.

Myself my wife and mother in law have dined at this Hotel many times. We visited again on xmas day 2014 for lunch/dinner. The restaurant was very busy but from the initial welcome (and small gifts from santa!) to our departure we had a lovely afternoon. We ordered our meals and because it was busy we expected a bit of a wait. To our delight each course arrived without delay and the quality and helpings could not be faulted. The young waiters and waitresses were very pleasant and carried out their duties faultlessly. The cost given that it was xmas day was very acceptable. We have no hesitation in recommending the Somerton and shall certainly return.

This restaurant has quite a good write up but we were very disappointed. The conservatory was well laid out with most of the tables reserved but we were the only family eating there on Saturday lunchtime. My husband ordered the Christmas dinner which was a disgrace. The plate consisted of a slice of turkey, a slice of ham, one half of a roast potato, a sausage in bacon, side dishes of veg, very small portions and the plate was swimming in watery gravy. My chicken with peppercorn sauce was very tough and the sauce was sickly sweet with cream. The waitress was very abrupt and not up to the serving standard this hotel deserves. The room was very cold because the tables were all placed in front of the radiators.Eating on a Saturday lunchtime in a place like this with no other customers was very disappointing.

The food is really good but when we visited we waited for a waitress to return with what was roast of the day and she never showed up again and then we had to wait ages to be served and there was only one other couple in the restaurant at the time. They had ran out of some sweets and it was only early friday evening which was disappointing. I would have thought theyd have expected friday night to be busy and been prepared.

The food is of good quality produced locally , well presented and reasonably priced.I was staying in the hotel and found the breakfast to be of good quality. Most of the guests were working in the area ie not visitors and the menu seemed aimed at this area.

Easy to find with ample parking. Pleasant bar and entrance. Our room at the front (No 4) has a four poster, though it was at the front we were not disturbed by traffic noise. The ensuite bathroom was clean and fresh, the bath is whirlpool/ jacuzzi; I imagine that would be welcome after a long hike. A huge flat screen telly dominates the room. Lots of different woods used in the decor real and laminates detracts from any sense of grandeur but doesn't detract from the hospitality. Breakfast is made to order and is excellent!

We were on holiday and although not staying in Lockerbie, thought we would give the Somerton House a visit. We had a sumptuous meal. The food is freshly prepared so it is worth waiting for. The quality was superb and presented to a very high standard . We chose to dine in the Conservatory which was bright and spotlessly clean . The value was excellent and the staff aim to please. We recommend eating here. Do give it a try and enjoy!

Visited the Somerton for a family lunch of 6 people on a Monday. Our orders were taken quickly, and even though we were the only people in the restaurant it took 45-60 minutes for all our meals to be cooked. I ordered the duck with an orange and cointreau sauce which i found very disappointing and not very well cooked and for some reason i was given small boiled potatoes and vegetables in 2 separate miniature bowls which were not well cooked or seasoned at all. Of all the 6 different dishes ordered, for some reason 4 of them had been dusted with paprika on the edge of the plate to aid in presentation, which in my opinion is very lazy and reflects poorly on the chef. The prices of all the dishes were between £12 - £15, which i felt was expensive as the quality of the food was poor, presentation was poor and service was slow. Another thing is that the 1 waitress (some Eastern European) on duty was very poorly dressed and her clothes were quite dirty and covered in cat hairs, which may explain why there was a hair in my food. The only highlight of our visit to the Somerton was that my grandpa was quite happy with his fish and chips, although how difficult is it to serve oven chips with fish?Overall i would not visit the Somerton again and as a local i would not recommend it to anyone.

Went here for an annual family meal. Booked a table for7 and 2 tables stuck side by side which was awkward to get seated for elderly people. Service was pleasant and courteous. Drinks orders were taken promptly and served. Food was very good with a wide variation on the menu. Chicken Stanley was a favourite with our party and enjoyed by everybody. I had placed coupons and the only quibble was the chips or crisps neither one nor the other. Sweets were excellent and wide choice and all homemade. All in all enjoyable meal and portions were a little bigger than previous visits. Well worth a visit.

Thank you too all for wonderful lunch today....We had 3 guests from england and all of us are quality consultants..... or erstwhile... the meet and greet was of the highest order in the anteroom... had the time to select from and very good table d,hote or a la cart menu... not rushed. the ambience was really good.... we had our meals in the lovely decorated conservatory room... decor and cleanliness 100 percent throughout... no piped music!!! so it was wonderful as we had much to talk about... the meal was so well presented, dellivered in good style and the main thing was the choice quality, and value for money. My colleages had visited a few places in the uk this week and considered it a real jewel in the crown for quality of food, cost, and staff friendliness.. Well done all the staff.... It was nice to see them utilising local s oduce in their food, and also make people aware of what was on in the locality with leaflets in an neat and uncluttered way..... My colleages are waiting for spring to revisit....It was very appreciated that my husband was made an alternative sauce for his beef.... thats really going that extra mile

Had dinner here last week. I opted for the chicken stanley which was very tasty. This was accompanied with potatoes and vegetables, although they don't give you many of these at all. The poor waitress had to read the dessert menu to us and had to do this to everyone else in the restaurant, when it was time for dessert. Why don't they print out dessert menu's and pass them round to everyone when it is time? Seems crazy. I opted for the ice-cream which was OK. All in all it was just "OK".

The SWI had our Christmas Meal here this year and pre ordered. I had the turkey and trimmings which was served on a huge platter and three huge slices of turkey. Everything cooked to perfection. I took the apple strudel and ice cream - great ice cream. Everyone enjoyed what they had ordered and a lovely atmosphere, and attentive serving staff who were pleased to see us and cheery.

We had a superb midweek supper here with friends in November. Bit of a trek from Dumfries but well worth the visit, and even closer to the M74 for anyone travelling up to Scotland in need of a refreshment. The haggis bites were delicious and the lamb kleftiko simply melted in the mouth. Their Chilean SB was extremely gluggable and very reasonably priced. Abbey and Jack were the best hosts. Highly recommended.

A late lunch stop off. Beautiful coffee, not an oz of fat in the pasty and a chocolate twist that I had eaten most of before I remembered to take a photo! Another quality visit. Thanks 😊
