I highly recommend that you visit this hidden cozy pub!!! Roast dinner was delicious , but due to the portion size couldn’t manage to eat it all. Staff were so friendly , but Fudge ( the dog) was the best company . Perfect place to sit in front of a log burner and enjoy a Sunday afternoon chatting with locals . Couldn’t have asked for more. Thanks again for hospitality, definitely will visit again

5* hospitality and very good food. From the moment we walked through the door we felt welcome, we arrived as strangers and left as friends. Lovely staff and landlords. They went above and beyond to accommodate our dietary needs. I wish we lived closer and this was our local pub. If you are staying in this part of Wales please visit, we can’t recommend them highly enough. If there were 10 stars they would be worth every one. Thanks guys, we hope to see you again one day.

A night to remember from start to finish. All the staff were so friendly and welcoming, with nothing too much trouble. We had the broccoli & cauliflower bake and the chicken madras curry. Both were delicious and followed by a melt in your mouth warm chocolate brownies and icecream. Caters well for veggies, vegans and those needing gluten-free. Modern, tastefully decorated dining area and modern, clean toilets also added to this 5 * experience. Can’t recommend highly enough - do try for yourself.

My 3rd visit for a meal this year actually! Twice with a couple of friends, and also as part of a large group in between. Great food at sensible prices, and a warm welcome. Spotlessly clean with a modern yet quirky traditional decor, which fits well in this old Inn. And it's still kept the relaxed friendliness of a 'locals' pub. Totally recommend!

Food pricey for what it is pub food, not bistro or restaurant meals, just pub food! Mains edible, ordered burger, scampy and chips etc, served on cold plate! Food cold before half way through the meal. Ordered bread and butter pudding, you needed a knife to smash your way through it, it was that incinerated. Fruit crumble was just as burnt and inedible. deserts abominable. Service ok, friendly enough staff. Drink but don't eat here!

I had booked The Somerset Arms as a destination for a birthday meal for my family and frankly wish we had gone somewhere else. We had a lunchtime meal and were the only people eating in the restaurant. The proprieter's family were in the bar. To be fair it was an appalling day with the weather with continual cold heavy rain and half of the beer garden at the back of the pub was under water. The menu seemed reasonably priced with a good range of pub food including a few choices for my vegetarian sister. The food was ordered, all items on the menu were available , and was served very quickly.Although nothing was badly cooked it was all very plain and tasteless. The potato skins seemed to have been fried in a cheap oil rather than grilled. The mashed potato tasted of margarine; a little butter goes a long way to inmprove the taste. The vegetables were again bland and tasteless (poor quality produce rather than fresh local vegetables). The chicken pie was nice but the steak pie seemed to have cheap meat rather than fresh local produce. The vegetarian cauliflower and broccolli bake was also bland and tasteless. The beers and drinks were fine with a reasonable choice. The desserts were reasonably good but portion sizes were a bit small. The premises had recently been decorated and to be fair looked very smart and modern. The landlady was pleasant and efficient. The premises were very clean. If customers are going to return again then the food has to be a bit more special than this. There is a lot of competition for pub food and this one was below par. I would suggest investing in a good chef who uses fresh local produce and makes the food more tasty, interesting and wholesome.

Overall a mixed dining experience. Excellent service by the waitress, bar attendant, severely let down by the kitchen who assumed that I must have been working for a reduced bill when my partially cooked fish was returned, claiming that it had been probed prior to delivery to my table.

Barely medium portions and menu was restricted as chef did not cook some dishes until the evening.Service at the bar was shocking unless the barmaid was not in the kitchen or at the other bar. Food was expensive for what you got and had been reheated. The cakes for sale on a side stand were the only interesting things and reasonably priced. Should have bought one and brought our own forks.

Steak which was sourced within 4 miles of the pub was overcooked and was very fatty, I suggest they ditch their butcher and go to Waitrose in Monmouth. After having given feedback still got charged the full amount. Seems that if you don't have the homemade steal pie then......don't eat there or be prepared to be disappointed. The pub is tidy enough but the food was shocking. My wife had a curry and the kids burgers. The curry was clearly a frozen microwave meal and the burger looked horrid. We live locally and have eaten here on several occasions as a couple and family, but have never managed to achieve a steak cooked "to order". All steak's come "Well Done" and that, is that! The mushrooms are tinned and definitely NOT cooked in butter as the menu suggests... Everything seems to arrive with inappropriately chosen vegetables/salad and if you eat on a Monday, its "taken as read" that you will receive Sundays re-heated vegetables with whatever you order... The food, decor and atmosphere are from the 70's, so expect this when you look at the menu. The area called the "Restaurant" has table cloths...but this is (from what I have noted) the only difference between it and the bar...? Born in mind that there are pool players/darts teams and a Juke Box only a few feet away, the word "Restaurant" doesn't belong here at all... Limited "Pub Grub" menu with lasagna/pies/bought-in Kiev's etc - the children s menu is as you would expect - nuggets/sausage and burger etc - all frozen goods. There are two "safe" options on the menu that we have found - pork steaks and the chicken/ham & leek pie, but that's it. The way in which you are greeted will depend on the mood of the staff and despite being relatively local, it took months for the "Mother" to speak to us! Although I understand that with such an influx of "out-of-towners" from the various local campsites, they must exercise caution with allowing tabs etc, for most honest folk, it is rather off-putting to be asked to leave a card behind the bar or pay up-front! This could really work as a "70's"/more traditional style pub, if only the food was better. This place needs an over-haul!

Although very busy so near to Christmas the service was good and food was delicious, two of us had the homemade pies one had scampi and the last one had chicken Kiev all meals were fine. We have eaten there before always good home style cooking. Only problem because it was so but there were a few inconsiderate drivers who parked badly and caused us to have great difficulty getting a disabled person back in the car, even though we had a disabled blue badge displayed. No fault of the Somerset Arms!

Today my partner and I visited for lunch. At the bar the lady serving commented on our accents. (We are from the South Wales valleys) my partner said " I don't come in here unless Iv been up this way fishing" and the woman said "ohh your the ones that don't pay" . We were both very offended by this comment thinking does this lady associate everybody who goes fishing to not paying! The lady then stated she was "joking" I stated I was going to pay before the food came and the lady said "it's ok leave your bank card here with me" clearly judging us from experience of fishermen not paying for food!.... As if we were both going to do a runner without paying! I couldn't believe my ears! I said no il pay for the food now! Food was paid for and ordered , when food came I ordered 2 lots of gravy only one came and when I asked for the second the woman stated "ohhh that's plenty!" By this point couldn't wait to leave! Very rude , food was pretty much frozen food with biso gravy! Absolute rubbish! Wouldn't recommend and most certainly wouldn't give them my money again! Appalling!

Had a meal there with the wife and friends meal average.overpriced for pub food.again for the 2nd time with my daughter and granddaughter.I tried the lamb shank in minted gravy.couldn't taste the mint.part of the shank was overcooked.the best part of the meal was the frozen chips.when the bill was presented I was asked if all was ok.I said the lamb was overcooked and a nasty taste.to the lamb.she smiled.again overpriced for pub food.next time weatherspoons in Monmouth.I would go there again for a plate of chips.good beers.

Visited last Friday for an early Fathers Day family celebration. Thankfully, we had booked a table for 7.30 as the place was extremely busy. We have all previously been here on numerous occasions so know their home made pies are the best in the area, also their cod is very good. But, as it was a special gathering 2 of us decided to order Chicken Kiev whilst our partners ordered Battered Cod and ChipsBIG MISTAKE!!!! The Chicken Kiev was round and looked exactly like a fish cake, I even felt it necessary to check when the waitress brought them to our table. Obviously processed meat didn't taste anything like chicken with garlic no sauce ran out and it was tough. As for the cod- again we are sure they were not fresh and from their usual supplier, probably from the freezer section. We were all very disappointed and if it wasn't for their fantastic home made pies we wouldn't return.

Four of us visited on a Tuesday evening. We didn't reserve a table but there was plenty of seating. The food was nice & there was plenty of choice on the menu.Homemade desserts are hard to resist! Again plenty of choice. The staff are friendly & welcoming. We will definitely call in again.

FIVE STARS............We visited the Somerset Arms last Friday evening and sat in the "front bar" with a group of workmen and our dogs. The atmosphere was excellent, the service superb, nice beer and fantastic food, so delicious, my mouth is watering thinking of it now. After a wonderful evening we left already talking about our pending return the following evening.< ONE STAR........We visited the Somerset Arms last Saturday evening having had a fabulous time the previous evening. We left the dogs at home and excitedly headed for the restaurant. Unfortunately we hadn't booked a table, our error, so gladly sat in the rear lounge. It was really cold so had to sit in our coats, not deterred we waited to be served. Then we waited a bit longer. And longer. Eventually, we gave our order and waited and waited........... a large group for the restaurant arrived so we waited some more. Finally three of our meals arrived. Two were average. The third was very unpleasant. Soggy pasta, one half mushroom and some chunks of chicken in an instant gravy accompanied by raw garlic bread, aka Chicken & Mushroom Pasta. It was totally inedible so was left, though admittedly no complaint made at the time. Finally the third meal arrived, the rare steak was well done. We thought it strange for the medium steak to arrive some 15 - 20 minutes earlier. Such a shame on the Saturday after such a fabulous Friday.Oh yes, I almost forgot about the drinks on Saturday, no I didn't... that's right, they were forgotten.

We diverted off the main road en route to Cardiff from the north west as we've enjoyed eating here when staying in the area. It was a good decision: excellent and friendly service, freshly cooked food and good beer. The almond and blackberry slice was excellent. We also bought a cake to take away. We'll be back.

A quaint country pub with a lovely garden and really good service. The food was absolutely delicious - the homemade cottage pie I had was one of the best I have ever tasted. I had walked two miles to the pub to eat and at the end of the night when I enquired about buses, the landlord very kindly gave me a lift back to the hotel. Great food and great service - an unbeatable combination. A little off the beatan track but worth seeking out.

Staff were polite , several things that we asked for on the menu were not available. Some of the food was served on sizzling platters, the trouble being the steak or chicken was like rubber as it had continued to cook on the platter. The prawn salad was just a prawn cocktail on a plate which tasted awful. The sultana sponge was just a slab of fruit cake with cream, and the gooseberry tart , was rubbery pastry and we called it hunt the gooseberry. We would never go here again,it was a total waste of money.

I left feeling deflated and disappointed. I've been here many times, never until now have I been disappointed! The food is lovely! No doubt about that. The service was appalling, im in my late 20s but being lucky enough to look slightly younger went against me here! Being the only ones in the entire pub having to pay for our food before having it! I was served the wrong drink to start off, but out of politeness I keep quiet and drank it. Surely that makes me a common theif who's going to eat and 'run' all this aside! A beautiful pub, highly recommend to over 70s who will receive respect!

We had a lovely meal and often come here but today the customer service for one of the waitresses was appalling! We felt very discriminated against because of our age, we was not allowed a tab yet everyone else in the beer garden was! Perhaps the younger generation should stick to McDonald's! Their customer service knocks socks of these!

Thought we'd give this place a try and glad we did. Their homemade steak pie is just as good as 'mummy would bake'. Cost was £14.00 for 2 persons even the veg etc was good. Nice staff and we will certainly be back.Well worth a visit and I'm sure you'll be surprised just as we were!

We have been visiting the Somerset Arms for about 4 to 5 years -sometimes only once a year -but have always had excellent food and friendly service. The pub seems to be a real ' local hub'and there are always locals eating and drinking there. The menu ranges from Salmon steaks to Vegetable curry;steaks to fish and chips. The restaurant is quite small but meals can be eaten in the garden too(which is a large grassy area with play equipment and beautiful flower borders) on several picnic tables overlooking the fields beyond.Everything on the menu is cookedfresh for you and the prices are so reasonable-especially if you take the meal deal ( 2 main courses for £12) .There are also lots of Home made cakes for sale -from Victoria sandwich ,Chocolate cake, lemon drizzle...yum yum!!A real gem of a place.

We dined here on 21st May 2013. We were just passing whilst touring the area. Pub does not look much from the outside but is lovely inside, extremely clean and nice decor. I had the best ever steak and ale pie and my husband had the best lamb shank he has ever tasted. The whole meal was locally sourced meat and fresh cooked by the lady cook. I only wish that I lived closer than Norfolk as I would make this my local. The beer was good and the staff friendly with excellent service. Tis free house was a very pleasant discovery, worth going out of your way to visit.

My partner and I came here to check out the Detroit pizza and cocktails. The service was fast and super friendly, plus they catered for my nut allergy really well. Being dog friendly, we took out 12 yo labrador Alffi who had fun, plus and Utterly Mutterly ice-cream! We had the 1/2 and 1/2 Detroit pizza, a mix of Bloody Mary and the porcini mushrooms. It was DELISH, the portion was also massive meaning we took half home for tea, making it 2 meals in 1. My partner had the Detroit IPA which was hoppy and fresh. I had the Shepherd and Welsh Wanderer cocktails. Very strong, delicious and well presented. We have friends that live locally and will absolutely be back to check out the Sunday slices, bring our dogs and have some more pizza and cocktails. Thanks Lee & co for fab hospitality.

Recently refurbished and Rebranded as "Fire & Fork" promising a " a traditional American barbecue experience". No Bread available before Starters. - Pork Burnt Ends - Mixture of under and over cooked chunks of pork in a sickly sweet, slightly spicy smoked sauce. Need something acidic to cut through all the fat came with "Texas "Toast", Stale slice of bloomer spread with an unidentifiable substance. Beef Cigars - Lovely shredded beef in a crispy pancake style roll with a rich, smoked Garlic Mayo. Mains - XL Short Ribs not available so both ordered the 10 Hour Smoked Brisket. Served as described on menu. No discernable smoked crust or flavour to the Brisket. No mustard available at this restaurant. No Napkins provided, asked twice, got some from another table. we dealt with our cutlery shortage similarly. No water provided when requested. Inexperience of the staff evident but more than made up for by their enthusiasm and wish to please. Two Starters, Two Mains, Three pints and a Short / Mixer - £92. Option to add tip to card payment. Cash tip direct to server. This place has lots of potential but needs to overcome teething problems before one will consider a return
