When visiting this pub on my birthday on Friday we waited 1 hour to actually get any food which was mediocre at best. The bill was a whopping £110 which we thought was extortionate. Myself and my partner will certainly not be visiting this public house in future.

A well portioned lunch from a wide variety menu. My food tasted great and I'd return in the future. Excellent service in a picturesque setting. An open fire and comfortable seating. Good size restaurant and plenty of outdoor seating for the warmer sunny days. No free parking and pay and display car park is tiny. The pub is set in a steep sided valley and though ramped, less abler persons should show caution. Worth a visit in my opinion.

Came here for a late lunch with my wife and parents. Booked in advance although it was very quiet and probably not necessary. The table was pointed out to us when we arrived and told someone would be over soon. It would have been nice to be shown to the table and a drinks order taken. Waited a long time (a good 25 mins) and eventually had to go to the bar to ask if someone could come over and take our order. I wouldn't mind but we seemed to be the only customers in the pub and A LOT of staff milling around chatting. I don't really understand how they can have a table of people with no drinks or food, holding menus, awkwardly looking around to catch someone's eye and not click on. The waitress was friendly and apologized for the wait and said no one had told her we were waiting. The main course was nice with a reasonable choice of dishes. On the expensive side though. Dessert seemed massively over priced for what we got (£8.50 for a small Eaton mess) nothing special. The pub itself is amazing, very traditional and incredible location. Very underwhelmed by the service and food considering the price. I can't say I'd recommend it frankly. Seems a bit disorganized even when very quiet.

First time re visiting my childhood secret location not many people know about. I used to come here all the time with family and grandparents however now they have all passed - it felt right to visit today with my other half and I have to say after a lot of emotion the excellent Sam and team gave 5 star service and it was exactly as I remember now even better. Perfect location perfect food and drink and best of all perfect and friendly staff. Beyond very cosy in front of the freshly lit fire that Sam did just for us upon arrival. Highly recommended and now I've discovered you can stay there overnight so will definitely be doing so very soon. Thank you Sam for a great experience. Kind regards Alex and Lolly the dog!

Fantastic views from the car park, caution if you have a low car as some of the car park is very un even. We had the burgers, and they were good but not amazing. We also had to ask for our drinks again after our food was served and we hadn't had them. It's a beautiful looking pub, and the beer garden looks really nice, but we came away feeling slightly underwhelmed. We wouldn't rush back and probably wouldn't recommend it as it's on the higher pub grub price scale.

Really enjoyable Sunday dinner. We booked a table for six on the Saturday, but when we arrived they could not find the booking however they instantly fitted us in despite it being a very busy service! All the six meals arrived piping hot and all at the same time. My wife had an issue with a couple of hairs on her plate and this was addressed super quickly with a replacement served up instantly. When requesting the bill our waitress informed us they would not be charging for the replacement meal, which we were more than happy to pay as the overall meals were super. Top dining, great service and overall a lovely venue. Our granddaughter lives in nearby Weymouth so we will definitely be returning for more. Many thanks.😉

Great location with very good service, friendly and helpful and can be busy in the summer months. Good gravel car park with awesome views and a public toilet block too. Access to pub is via many steps down or by a concrete ramp steep in places but sound under foot. Food was OK but not blown away with the mushroom ciabatta which was more onion relish than mushroom nor fish finger sandwich that was just that with no frills. For the price I expected more. Ale was lovely but Coca-Cola well overpriced. Amazing location and would love to stay one night to sample more of the menu. Walks around here are for the able bodied but with stunning views.

10% "optional" service charge practice is weird considering that you ask people to order at the bar and it is not a group. Please consider increasing already expensive prices by it or ask every customer at the bar whether they are fine to include it. The information about it is a small print on the menu so put it on the top and with a bigger font so people really have a choice. For me it was around 20gbp for a very average burger (I had better meat quality elsewhere) without any salad, and around 6 pounds for a pint of ale. Also you're asked to collect your cutlery yourself. So nothing backs up the service charge. Not a nice practice in this overall beautiful place.

The food is pricey but the quality of this food is nowhere near. It is a disgrace. We ordered one of the priciest things on the menu, pork belly, 22 something quid, we got a tiny piece of pork with three old unfortunate carrots, some small unappetising potatoes and a pile of green beans on the side. It looked like nothing. Are they running cookery courses or something? Another dish was a cheese platter to share, we had six pieces of stale cheese, old grapes and some cookies, some were broken. 14 quid, horrendous. One piece of cheese looked bitten,so I didn't eat it. We couldn't just walk out because they made us pay before the food was served. It's not the price that matters but the quality. There was none.

A truly stunning setting and staff who are happy to allow you to hunker down in a corner and crack on with with some work. However when it comes to food - my family and I found the food to be low quality and very overpriced. This aspect was dissappointing. Table service came also across as quite grumpy at times too. The best thing the Smuggler's could do is to get a chef who really cares and leads a team to deliver some great food.

Food was very good but overpriced and it was a no cash zone which could be very embarrassing to any customers if they don't have a decent overdraft .a sirloin steak and a steak sandwich with 2 drinks was over £65. So be aware the prices are very, very small print. And they streamed music into the garden, totally ruining the atmosphere as we thought a nice lunch next to the river by the beach would be lovely but it wasn't we could've got the same food and terrible music for half the price anywhere else, and there was no way to get to the beach there either so that was the afternoon plan finished. If you can't climb a flight of stairs then I wouldn't go, the sloped access is as steep as a staircase, I saw healthy young men struggling to push a buggy back up it. Wouldn't go again wouldn't recommend it either

I'm surprised how blasé some of the reviews are; it's been ages since I've been in a pub this nice and it's off the chart compared with what you get on most high streets (not sure what sort of pub utopia you're living in!) but I guess the pub is quite obvious and well-known to locals. I was unable to leave inhouse reviews due to technical issue but I wanted to leave a review nonetheless. We were welcomed in with a smile and pleasant conversation from a young girl, Ella. She made us feel welcome with friendly conversation, including my daughter in these conversations too. Ella was just a friendly person to serve you in an unfamiliar area. It was clear that the team worked well together too. The food and atmosphere was cosy and provided great talking points and the food tasted great with correct portion sizes. Both child's and adult menus where spoilt for choice. Unfortunately we couldn't get the the local beach due to pathways closed after bad weather but if I was staying longer I would definitely explore the beaches and revisit the pub. Great location, nice atmosphere and decent service, but don’t visit expecting good food! Went for Sunday lunch, early February, so few people outside (around 50% of capacity is outdoors) but busy inside, nice pubby atmosphere, plenty of dogs and families, so a nice lunch. But food us very mass produced fare, overcooked and small portions of the more expensive elements (meat) otherwise it’s what you would expect, no attempt to be a high standard, but if your expectations are for a basic meal then you won’t be overly disappointed. Good place to walk the dogs for a few hours and then stop for a drink and/or a bite to eat, but don’t make the journey for the food.

My wife and I dropped in for a late lunch today. I ordered the flat iron steak and my wife ordered the roast turkey. Honestly, steak always feels like a risk in a pub - something I usually feel like I can do much better at home and for far less money - but I took a risk because flat iron is my favourite cut and, no exaggeration, it was one of the best steaks of *any* cut I've ever had. Thick, cooked just right, juicy, tender, and extremely flavourful. It was also very reasonably priced in our inflationary times. My wife's turkey was excellent as well. Great staff, lovely venue, and a cracking place for a walk afterwards (if you have enough daylight - sadly we didn't on this occasion). We'll definitely be back!

We had lunch in what looked like a lovely pub in a seaside setting. Inside the pub was a great atmosphere. Bar staff and table service was with a smile and friendly demeanour. What let this pub down was the worst example of pub grub. Strangely there's not a star rating for food, thus I express my dissatisfaction by giving a single star for all, as I will never return, or recommend to others. The 2 others I shared a table with, both ordered ham and eggs. You would think this cannot be messed up....Wrong! It came with undercooked eggs, i.e. still transparent areas, and plate was swimming in oil. They tried to mop it up with their knapkin, but it wasn't able to absorb enough. This was the same for both plates. They complained, and asked for over-easy eggs without a plateful of oil, only to be presented with identical plates. The 3rd attempt the eggs were overcooked, less oil. They offered to get something else and not charge for meals and offered deserts gratis. Given the issues they stuck with the overcooked eggs. My fish and houlomi chips, the fish was so thin, with more batter than fish, and burnt houlomi fries. As I had eaten fish, they offered me a dessert, but elected to just have a coffee. Therefore, though they acknowledged the poor food and offered compensation, it was as bad as I have experienced ever. There are reviews here that praise the food, so I can only surmise that these are either by the restaurant, or it was not the same chef/management team. Also they were charging top prices, my fish and houlomi fries meal was £22. I regularly eat in a pub where the fish is twice the size (in Surrey, no near the sea) and is the best for £18.

Lovely pub, great surroundings. Food was great and staff very friendly. They even moved some tables around for us so we were more comfortable. Only slight downside was it took a while to get the bill, we had to ask a few times but got there in the end.
