Smithfields in Telford and Wrekin

We had chicken kebab and chips tonight and it wasn’t good at all. The kebab meat was burnt and there was hardly any salad on it. The chips were so bland. It’s just not worth the money for what we got.

Positives and negatives: Positives: easy to order online, and collection easy. Good to see a gluten free menu. Good portion sizes. Batter on fish tasty. Downside was the GF chicken tikka burnt, therefore chicken was dry. Good flavours

Worst chip shop I have ever been to ordered 2 mixed kebabs in pitta with Mediterranean chicken and doner meat we arrived as they opened at 4.30pm and placed our order the chicken was black and charred and had obviously been there from the night before even the salad wasn’t fresh the meat was inedible pitta bread was torn and not even warmed properly never again I’m sure fish & chips would probably be fine but stay away from the kebabs they are shocking

I purchased a large fish and regular chips at a cost of £11.20. The waiting time was long, at 25 minutes. There seemed to be a lot going on behind the counter, but very little food being given out to waiting customers. The fish was very good, however, the chips had a strange musty smell. I ate a few of them, but they were dry and had a stale taste. I felt very sick and bloated for a few hours afterwards. This wasn't my first visit to this fish & chip shop, but it will definitely be my last.

Unfortunately I got the trainee serving me, nothing against trainees, but management should support their training, rather than stand watching. When I got home and opened up my donor kebab in pitta, I had 3 slivers of kebab, 2 pieces of lettuce and a pitta bread half full of chilli sauce… disgraceful for the price, management should ensure staff receive adequate training before putting them to work without assistance….wont be returning

We ordered online for collection, and chanced our arm going to collect 5 minutes early and it was being packed already so we were in and out in a matter of minutes! Fantastic. Lovely friendly staff and food was fabulous…just what we were hoping for…including the salad and cheese on the burger exactly as ordered. Thank you Smithfield people, if you read this!

Came here as we personally know him through my partners old colleague/friend other job Steven. Tell you what we couldn’t regret coming here it’s busy and not under pressure from the staff. We came here to get ourselves a chippy tea. Had doner kebab, battered sausage and plate of chips to share out. The chips were delicious and tasty like your at the seaside, moist crispy and taste like chips. The battered sausage was unreal taste how a sausage should be. The kebab was very tasty we all very enjoyed!

Whether it be in the restaurant or take away i've always had excellent food and service here. Today i tried the kebab pitta with a mix of all meats and the flavour of the month, which was maple sweet chilli was delicious. Best chippy in the area.

The Maple and Sweet Chilli Chicken kebab is the best ever! As it is the "Flavour of the Month" you have to get in quick. Its a pity it is not on the menu permanently!

Rubbish. They just don’t answer the phone to take an order and they online ordering system doesn’t cover all options. Don’t waste your time. Have been using them for years but will go elsewhere from now on. Fast food it’s not.

Extremely disappointed, and a complete waste of money and food. Ordered to pick-up, and got home to find grease dripping through the box and all packaging was covered. Food was swimming in so much grease it was inedible & had to go straight in the bin. Will never be returning and certainly won’t recommend.

This is the greatest fish and chip shop in Shropshire. They Cater for my Aunt who has to avoid gluten. So to know their fish and chips are fried separately from other food. The menu is full of great choices and even if you’re not a fan of fish and chips they serve alternatives. The portions are huge so if you want a smaller portion the. The menu over and your sorted. They serve desserts but I defy anyone who has had their full portion including BRead and butter to have space. Basic choice of drinks but it’s not a pub. The wine is great

Thoroughly enjoyed our lunch .Cod really good.I am surprised that the prices have not rocketed like other places.Restaurant looked clean and there was a steady stream of customers.Aware they were regulars by the welcome they received,although to be fair everybody had a good welcome

We had take away fish and chips from here recently on the back of ‘excellent’ reviews but we were sadly disappointed. The fish-haddock was fine, we’ll cooked with a good crisp batter but the chips were terrible. They didn’t taste at all nice and were the bittiest and scrappiest bits of potato that basically bore no resemblance to a chip! They were also really squashed together and there was no crispness to them at all. It was such a shame because the reviews that we had read promised something fabulous and only half the meal was. We will try them again in the hope of better next time but on this visit we were disappointed.

We were in the area visiting friends when we stopped off at Smithfields. And we were so glad we did with some of the finest fish and chips we’ve had out this way. Cod and chips perfectly cooked and a side of peas to help out. The whole family enjoyed their meals and we wouldn’t hesitate to eat here again, thank you Smithfields

We had a takeaway for all the family and we can honestly say that these fish and chips are among the best we have ever tried and coming from a seaside town we have tasted many in the past. The fish is as fresh as it could be and the chips are floury and crisp just as we like them and very tasty indeed. Our 6 year old granddaughter even exclaimed that they are the best in the whole world !! and that sure means that they are very good. The batter is perfect, crispy and tasty. There is no surplus oil or fat on anything and in fact everything is all cooked to perfection. The staff are all hard working, very pleasant and efficient and my husband and I cannot wait to try the restaurant soon. We have had a couple of takeaways without the family and we are so pleased to say that the quality, service and efficiency are all consistent which we believe to be essential for success. Well done each and every one of you, we will always highly recommend you and we wish you all success and prosperity. Thank you.

Completely off the scale...amazing fish and chips I had the jumbo haddock, requested skinless,and it was beyond amazing

My wife and I ate at Smithfields on 19th of August. I had cod and chips and my wife had chicken kebab. The food was excellent and there was plenty of it. We would recommend eating here.

Hi, I have just tried the new "Chicken Maple and Sweet Chilli" kebab. WOW! What flavour. That blend of sweetness from the maple, and the slight kick from the sweet chilli. An absolute must if you fancy something different. The click and collect service is fantastic for those still a little unsure regarding safety, and the staff are all wearing PPE.Absolutely the best fish and chip restaurant around. Highly recommend a visit.

They have a click and collect service , you can make your order on the website , book a time slot , park up at the time booked and they’ll bring it out and put it in your boot. The ordering online is so simple to use. I was really pleased with the logistics they have put in place to protect staff and customers from the Covid spread. The food was as usual really good and brought out by a very polite gentleman. Well done Smithfields!

Welcome back to all at Smithfields, we collected our order on Friday. I can only say, "we have missed the best fish and chips during this shutdown". You have certainly come back with a vengeance. We visited 2 Saturdays running en route to a holiday destination and on the way back. I couldn't fault it. Easy to find, off road parking, restaurant to the side, delicious, gluten free fish and chips as a takeway or restaurant meal, nice decor, staff professional and friendly. Toilets available and they were clean.

Worst fish and Chips we have had for years. I have visited loads of fish and chip shops over the years and this has to be the worst one ever.

As I say in the title, Smithfield is the best chip shop in Telford. Always clean. Staff friendly especially the owners. Kebab meat beautiful and not greasy at all. Very busy on Friday and Saturday evenings..... for a good reason!! They're no.1

The best chips I think I have ever had. Surprised by how good the burgers were, could go toe to toe with some of these expensive posh burger restaurants ! Fish is also very nice hard to fault this place.

We had an incredibly busy day and decided to cheat and have a takeaway, having not been here before ,and hearing from others how nice the fish and chips were ,we gave it a go ,we were not disappointed.we will definitely go again

Absolutely fantastic service from start to finish all staff nice and friendly and apologetic for rushing round for customers and all food tasted absolutely brilliantly would definitely reccommend this restaurant. The only chip shop I use now

We had an excellent meal of cod and chips one night whilst staying a few days in Wellington. Despite comments from some other reviewers, we found the portion sizes to be pleasantly large, which was very helpful after a long day's tourism!The standard of the food and the courtesy of the service from the young trainee were so good that we went back later in the week. This time, Jenna had the plaice, which was just as tasty as Blake's cod.The place does not set out to look like a plush restaurant - its style is more that of a cafe. The big advantage is that you get to eat a really good meal at very reasonable prices. Definitely a place to visit!

Been going here for years, and must have spent a fortune in that time. The fish is normally good and the chips excellent. There are always exceptions, but on the whole the quality is very good on all counts.Portion sizes are my only criticism - they are very variable. Sometime they are good and just what you'd expect, others they are really poor and not satisfactory for what is quite an expensive 'chippy'.

So nice to be able to come to a restaurant like this for our Fish and Chips,to be able to sit down, order what we want,and then in a timely manner all brought to the table with a nice hot tea or coffee, and some bread and butter,plentiful selection of all the other chip shop items available to order as well if you don't want fish, simply divine.

As a family with 3 coeliacs we were delighted to find that Smithfields offer gluten free fish and chips, which are delicious, and now offer so much more that is gluten free too. The owners and staff are always friendly and helpful, and we are regulars there for our monthly takeaway treat.

Upon our friends recommendation,the three of us went down to Wellington and all had the small/pensioners fish and chips meals, and i have to say they were very nice, served with tea or coffee and bread and butter in a nice clean sit down restaurant, this made a very nice change to the places we normally go to for lunch and they have a decent menu, will definitely go again.

Over priced compared to other chipys in wellington over cooked .oil could do with changing and them all wearing hair nets

Brilliant chippy, the best in Telford, Alex & Kiri always make you feel welcome and at home, quick service, made a 20 mile trip well worth it to say the least!

I was in the area on a Friday night so of course looked up the local chippy.

Eat in is expensive but there fish is proper cod..large and succulent and cheaper fish shops don't offer this quality...very clean and friendly staff..all good

Visited with my Grandaughter and Daughter in Law early evening prior to shopping in Morrisons. I had fish and chips which were great. Plentiful portions accompanied by good, friendly service!

I've probably spent several hundred pounds here over the years but my last 2 trips for my Large Smithfield Special have been very disapointing.

Went here on recommendation from TripAdvisor reviews and was not disappointed. Premises were a pub. There's a large dining area with table service. Had the Jumbo Haddock. Perfectly cooked and the chips are hand cut. Friendly and attentive staff too! Lovely.

Was visiting daughters family nearby and spotted Smithfields as we were driving by. Liked the look of it and called back later.

I’ve eaten here a few times and always been impressed by the quality and freshness of the food. The staff are always friendly too, even helping my indecisive wife make her mind up! I especially love the chicken kebab meat special flavours that they change every now and then.

Without doubt best chippy I've used large cod is tops eat in if want those who say its dear..get what pay for...quality ..friendly staff clean...def top chippy

This place is fantastic in every way. Plenty of parking. The restaurant is attached to the takeaway and is clean and feels so much smarter than the usual places with bright and fun decor.. The table service is excellent. The food is cooked to order, totally fresh, and comes to the table straight from the kitchen lovely and warm. This is a place to go for a good meal out and entertain friends too. We have been a number of times with guests and they are always impressed by the quality of the food, the service, and the restaurant in general. This is no greasy spoon - no it's the posh fish and chip shop. I cannot recommend it more highly.

Excellent service and lovely food, cooked after the order and not taken from the counter. The full price fish was not much larger than the pensioners meal deal, and was theonly small negative.

Having recently purchased fish & chips here which were outstanding we decided to visit again this time having chosen chicken fillets + a kebab. You have 4 fillets which are well cooked & very small. The kabab meat was very dry wrapped in narn bread not pitta. I suggest everyone should stick to fish/chips as these other options very disappointing

We have had both takeaway and from the restaurant, but even though they are both excellent I prefer eating in.

One off best chip shops ive used the fish is proper cod..thick large chunky..chips good and overall while not cheap ifnyou want proper cod..thats price you pay..very clean friendly staff..top chippy

We have never been disappointed with the quality of the food here. Whether take away or eating in, it never varies and is always excellent. The restaurant is spot on, great staff and again, excellent food.

Hubby and I had place and chips in the restaurant and the portions where huge. Food was well above average and the service was friendly and fast. A must visit for hungry mouths. To top it off extremely reasonably priced

It is not obvious that there is a restaurant attached to the chip shop. Smithfield’s is directly opposite Morrisons in wellington. The restaurant is small and when I visited on Friday lunch at 3 there were 6 other customers there. There is a car park for the takeaway and restaurant and as Morrisons is adjacent parking should not be an issue. I was quickly seated and order take. There are a number starters and sweets main are not only fish dishes but meat as well.

Today while in wellington i simply fancied fish and chips i dont often use chippies but ive had good experiences from this one.

Went in today at lunchtime.. Had the jumbo haddock n chips and sat in the restaurant part. Best haddock n chips I had in a very long time. You can tell the haddock is fresh, they must get it every morning or every Friday morning. But totally tasted great. Defo worth a visit, u won't be disappointed. Looking forward to the next visit.

Recommended to try delighted with excellent quality of food ,fast service on a busy Friday evening by clean polite staff .Awell developed new business in an old pub a real credit to the owners

Recently moved into the area and we fancied some fish and chips. Modern inside, slight damp smell to the restaurant area but decent service. We went for the standard cod and chips which were lovely. The cod was large but not big enough to make you feel bloated afterwards. Fish chips mushy peas, two drinks for £20.20. Not bad, we will visit again !

I had salmon, salad and chips £8-50 and a diet coke at £2. The chips were chunky and plentiful, the salmon excellent. My friend had the large haddock and chips which everybody seemed to be going for at £9-50. He thought it was great and it certainly looked nice and was a very generous portion of haddock. There is a takeaway alongside and it too was doing a roaring trade which is a sign of quality.

We visited here for our tea and had fish & chips. I have certain dietary needs, and they cooked me fish in a rice flour coating as they at the moment don't do gluten free. But it was too die for! The fish was beautifully cooked. But in saying that, their ordinary batter is not too greasy either. Wonderful meal. The "boys" have been taught the trade by one of the best in the trade. Well done and thank you.

Needed a quick dinner straight after work before a concert and hadn't been for years. Ordered chips and mushy peas to take away really quick service, great helpful staff who are always smiling! Would recommend.

We have used the chippy probably about a dozen times in the last two years, eat in and takeaway. It is the only chip shop we use in the area. Every time it has been great.... hot tasty food, not greasy and not covered in unnecessary batter. The place is also clean and tidy, with helpful and welcoming staff. Really fab, thank you.

We visited at the peak of a Friday night dinner. The takeaway was very busy but there were not many in the restaurant. My fish cakes were excellent and and my wife enjoyed her cod. Does what it says on the packet, very good

We regularly have fish and chips from here and are usually very happy with the meal. They do. Good burger too. Sadly tonight there was a huge queue and instead of letting people wait another couple of mins, thry dished the dregs of chips, and the cod was not the usual standard either. Here's hoping it was a one off bad day.

Went to Smithfields for a take away meal for my wife and I,we'ed been once before and had had a meal in the restaurant and was very impressed. last night the standard of the food was not near the first visit and we both had upset stomachs in the night, may not have been the food from Smithfields that caused it though.The drop in standard may have been because we had a meal to take out. Shame really we were going to take my wife's mom and dad for a meal in the restaurant next time they visit us that won't be happening now. I hope they take note of this review as I know it is easy to 'rest on your laurels'.

Always have really good fish (lovely batter) and chips whether eaten in in the nice restaurant (very clean toilets as well!) or taken out. The burgers are also good. The only reason I haven't given 5* is they don't do spring rolls - a major issue for me as I love them.

Drove over from our holiday let in Ironbridge to try the fish and chips here because my husband has to have a gluten free diet and they offer this option. The staff were very helpful and the food was great - good size portions and very tasty. They took a lot of care to avoid cross contamination. Food was cooked fresh but we didn't have too long a wait. Would return if we lived nearby!

Staff friendly and have a lovely working atmosphere. Lots of choice to choose from. Added bonus you can have gluten free fish and chips which are very yummy. Chip shop is always busy and the staff cope really well. Best chip shop around for miles!

This has got to be one of the best chip shops I've been to. The choice of food was extensive. The staff smartly turned out and very pleasant. The thro-view of the cooking and preparation areas confirmed the overall impression. The take-away food was in boxes so that the food did not "sweat" and go soggy in transit. I had Cod and my wife had the best piece of Plaice I've seen for a while.The eat-in restaurant looked very nice as well for those that wanted to enjoy their meal in. Perhaps a drinks license would finish that off.Well done boss and we will return!!

There are fish & Chip shops aplenty in every city but finding one that has all the flavor and the right texture to the fish can sometimes be difficult. Smithfield's has great fish & chips. They provide fast and friendly food with piping hot beautifully cooked food.

First the good, food here is fresh and very tasty. HOWEVER, the owners well the one I talked too, need a lesson in how to deal with a customer enquiry,The last two times I have been here I have received one fish in the meal for two that was substantially smaller than the other. Finding this odd I asked the very pleasant young woman serving me why this was. She said I needed to speak with the chap doing the frying. He came round with an immediate attitude. I asked my question?"Well as the owner, I can tell you that these fish are not different sizes" I Think I was supposed to be impressed and a tad intimidated by the fact that he was the "owner".Unfortunately this had the reverse impact as if I was talking to the "owner" I would expect a more business like and professional response. I asked how can he say they are the same looking at the comparative size. One fish was a fillet but a third smaller than the other. "All fish are between 10 and 12oz he retorted. Well if there was only 2oz difference between these fish i'll eat the box they came in. "So what do you want" he demanded never making eye contact with me the entire conversation. "I'd like two pieces of similar size please"..... "Well I cant take these back as they are now cold so that's......" he just manged to stop short of saying take it or leave it"They are not cold they have been out of the heated shelf for as long as we have been speaking".. (2 minutes at most)" I said, His reply was "So I suppose you want me to fry you two new pieces of fish?" "No thank you i'd hate to put you out as I'm only a customer!" God knows what would go on behind the scenes with this junior partner having such a bad day.. I asked the helpful young lady to continue with my order please and left the fryer to nurse his bad attitude.Got home in about 10 minutes the fish was perfectly cooked as usual, nice and warm too. The only sour taste was the buying experience. I hope the other partners can perhaps give this young man a bit of coaching in how to respond to the customers who are happy to pay for the great quality food served here but not confrontational bad attitude of someone who should be the flag bearer for customer service and an example to the other staff.

Fish and chips for us is a one stop - here at Smithfield. The fish is fresh and good quality and cooked beautifully. We tend to use the restaurant and eat in but on occasion do have take away, Whichever, it is always cooked fresh. I have never been into the take away section and had food from the warmers. The turnover is so great that they are constantly frying so both the fish and chips are as fresh as they can be.If you love fish and chips you cannot fail to be impressed by Smithfields.

We don't usually go to the Smithfield, our allegiance has always been elsewhere however that will change now. Gosh the fish was amazing. Stunning, delicious pieces of cod and haddock in beautiful crispy dark batter. None was left on any plate and that includes the batter. Chips were ok. Not to the same standard as our usual but the Fish made me forget there was chips on the plate. Mushy peas were ok.

Don't know what people will put up with but not for me chips had been kept warm for some time fish was the opposite swimming in fat batter all soft .only good aspect was good parking.no return visit planned

I see a lot of people raving about the fish and chips but my partner thought it was average, my meal was ok just took a while to arrive I will come back and try again as so many people seemed to enjoy maybe it was an off day

Travelling from where a lot of fish comes from way far north in Great Britain, where apparently the best Fish and Chip Shop is (Frankies, Shetland) we were very impreseed indeed by the quality of fish and food at Smithfields. The staff were excellent and the service superb

I'm not sure whether the reviewer who left a poor review was referring to the same Smithfields I've been using since they opened. This chippie is SUPERB and good value for money.The fish is freshly cooked, the chips are excellent and everything is kept nice and hot. It's exceptionally clean and sparkling. It's not easy owning a chippie and customers don't see the preparation required behind the scenes, especially peeling the potatoes. The owners work hard to provide top quality food and are to be commended. Highly recommended chippie.

Visited this pub on the evening of 20 January. Externally there was litter by the doors that could have been cleaned by the owners. After we sat down, we waited nearly 10 minutes before a waitress came to take our orders. We waited another 25 minutes for our order of fish and chips to be served...and the seating part of the restaurant was not even busy. The fish was dry and rubber like in texture. They were definitely not fresh. The chips were greasy and the sprinkle of salad was like what one would leave on a plate after dinner. The waitress did not even come back after serving to ask if we were enjoying the meal. Never again!!!

Nice restaurant. However, takeaway fish and chips are so expensive here. The portions on offer are either too small or big. Fish slightly burnt as well. We tried twice, first time the service was fine but the second, took ages to get served. There are better and cheaper options in the area. Not recommended - nothing special despite the plush (for a chippy) premises.

By far the best F & C in Telford, not that we have been to them all, but I'm taking the time to review, so must be worth it.Always seems popular, parking is good too and the food always hot. Never eaten inside, but must try their restaurant sometime. Kebabs look tasty too.Well presented and friendly staff....
