I loved it here. We tried the wine and cheese pairing alongside a charcuterie board. I can't describe just how good it was. It's a tad on the higher end price wise but you really do get a level of quality for that.

Popped in here for a quick in-between-meals bite and, as the kids say, the vibes were immaculate! So peaceful and truly something for everyone. Affordable and delicious wine flights, hot tea for non-alcohol drinkers, and charcuterie + baked goods if you need a snack. A great place to pop in while in Portobello.

My new favourite place. I got a really friendly and warm welcome even though I was only a party of one. What welcoming and knowledgeable staff. I had a cheese and wine pairing for £22 which I think was exceptional value for money. There were two to choose from, Greek or Portuguese. I chose Portuguese having recently visited the Douro valley. It didn't disappoint. I felt like I had a real treat and can't wait to come back. Next time with a friend :)

A wonderful evening spent here. Have been before, but several years ago so it was great to revisit. A great selection of wines and food. We went for the mixed platter and sausage rolls and it was delicious. A good sized portion for 2 people. The service was great and attentive without being overbearing. Love that you can also buy to take away. Will definitely be back.

A favourite spot for cheese and wine in Stockbridge. Lots of options for wine by the glass, changing tasting flights, and delicious local cheeses. In addition their downstairs space is an excellent private hire room - the minimum spend is reasonable and the team were so helpful with booking and on the night! They even preordered vegan cheese to make a vegan cheeseboard for my friend.

Finally able to visit this place, in August no less. During the "quiet" times of the year we've never been able to get seated as it's quite the local hotspot. Wine flights and cheese pairing isn't inexpensive, but it is high quality with plenty of written descriptions to enhance your experience.

Terrible service. The highlight was the grilled cheese, well-worth the visit. The terrace is pleasant.

We have visited them several times in the last 6 months, and they are one of the best wine bars we have been to in Edinburgh. The selection is very diverse, with a balanced wine list, and the food offering is well thought through. Service is friendly and warm, and the space is accommodating no matter where you sit.

Sat in an outdoor seat for two, waited 15 mins for service. Waitress was a very pretty girl who had a very ugly attitude. Seemingly we had to go and look at the “Board” if we wanted a recommendation and she had no Prosecco only fizzeco. Stockbridge what do you expect? Oh I dunno some bloody service with perhaps some courtesy? Shame it had been recommended by a local restaurant we just left too.

Love this place. Come back every time I visit Edinburgh! It should have a way better Google Rating! Delicious cheese/snacks and wine. Great staff; always giving helpful recommendations. There are games like Dominos, Scrabble and Chess if you want entertainment. Great location.

Dogs are not allowed, olives overpriced… wine is good but also overpriced. A pity that they don’t accept dogs as this area is very dog friendly.

My friend booked the wine cellar for her 30th birthday, it was a decent sized space with a lovely long table, somewhere to play music and plenty of room to mingle! As it is a cellar the ceiling was quite low on either side of the room so take that into consideration, but it wasn't really an issue. The staff were really helpful and friendly, giving us enough space so we didn't feel hounded, but being around enough to ensure we had enough drinks etc at all times! The cheese boards and burrata with bread were amazing and I am still thinking about the delicious truffle crisps that were on the table when we came in. They were really great about us bringing in a cake for my friend too and provided a knife and extra plates. Overall, a great experience, a fab place for a nice drink and some snacks! A little pricey but definitely worth it, and so easy to find in Stockbridge!

Survived January and on the first evening of February 2023 I took an "alternative flight of wine & cheese flight" at S & G Stockbridge Edinburgh. Challenged but not disappointed. Scottish cheese showcased once again this time with German Riesling which continued my education in both. Final wine and cheese pairing of Pinot Noir and old Winchester lead to a chocolate and wine pairing in Georgia....Saperavi; courtesy of Edward & Irwyn chocolate cinder toffee and honey heaven! Staff at S&G proving once again to be "on point" with their knowledge - thank you!

On our first night in Edinburgh we stumbled across the Smith & Gertrude wine bar in Stockbridge. We sat at the bar and had some great banter with the waitress who was charming and gave us some great recommendations. The wine selection is extensive and varied with some interesting blends form around the world, and they have a great selection of small plates to pair with your wine. They had a number of wines by the glass which we sampled along with our sharing plates which were so tasty! This is a fantastic spot for wine lovers which we highly recommend 🍷

I like this bar and love the wine flights, paired with cheese. Unfortunately , had to leave and walk out onto the pavement due to the ‘incubation’. Was a warm night for November admittedly so perhaps even more reason to crack a window somewhere but it was boiling. My partner and I were uncomfortable and when I tried to let air in the door a member of staff was straight over to shut it. Quite a few merry groups having fun and making for a great atmosphere but seriously intense amounts of carbon dioxide and other bodily gasses just lingering as the room got hotter, and the condensation on the windows increased. Lots of people coughing and spluttering. Basically an air tight covid-den with the potential to be a wonderful evening. Please open a window somewhere. We all missed our favourite places like Smith & Gertrude because of basics like this.

Visited the Portobello bar and had a great evening. The tasting flight was fab, good service, in a relaxed atmosphere. Will certainly be back.

This is an experience not to miss in Edinburgh! The wine and cheese flights were well paired and delicious. The atmosphere is beautiful and Mathew the gentleman working the bar was knowledgeable and friendly. The perfect spot for lunch, happy hour, or a fun date. Will definitely come back every time we are in the city.

Having been to their new wine and cheese bar in Portobello recently, we were happy with the experience. So, we thought we would return. We were greeted warmly, shown to a table and given water and menus. Having pondered over the options we carefully selected our food and wine. Unfortunately, no server arrived to take our order for 30 minutes. We left! . A server thanked us for coming but obviously didn't realise we were leaving because of the slow service. I realise they were busy but we had no indication of any wait. Maybe a staffing issue although we would have appreciated a prior warning that our order could have been slower than normal. As a new business I would have thought it important to have sufficient servers to deal the the high demand.

My friends and I enjoyed a selection of snack type food (sausage rolls and cheese toasties) which were very tasty I must say, but we had a bit of a shock when the bill came and the 500ml carafe of wine was £36 (my friends had already ordered a couple of glasses prior to my arrival, one £13 for 175ml and the other £9 for 125ml)! Venue was lovely and female member of staff was very helpful, but at those wine prices, and no coffee served, we won't be back - plenty of more reasonably priced places around!

We had a wonderful visit to Smith & Gertrude this Sunday. The food was incredible and the service excellent. The staff seriously know their stuff and their passion comes across. One of the highlights of our trip.

I went here when it first opened and, to be honest, was slightly disappointed having experienced Pickles (another wine and cheese restaurant) for many years. But we gave it another go and they have really honed the concept and improved the decor. It’s high end quality cheese and wine with a relaxed vibe. The place was full with a great atmosphere. Portions are now a decent size and there’s enough variety on the menu to keep you interested. We also had warm welcoming service. The bread and crackers were exceptional. Wine flight selection was excellent. Flawless. Bravo.

We dropped in here for lunch on a wet Edinburgh day and went back for pre-dinner drinks. We got friendly service, knowledgeable wine recommendations and a super-tasty board of cheese and charcuterie. It was the perfect find for us and worthy of a 5 star review here. Really nice casual vibe and a great vinyl collection!

Just been pointed out to me that my fav; Wine Bar in Edinburgh is the only one in Scotland that got a mention in the 'Olive' magazine's review of Wine Bars. 'And' now its open 7 day's a week. You can get a really top glass of excellent wine through their 'Coravin' system rather than fork out for the full bottle.

When you live so close to Smith & Gertrude, you can't help but pop in on a regular basis.

Love Smith and Gertrude in Stockbridge, Edinburgh. Modern, friendly, relaxed and bustling wine bar. Staff are excellent and very knowledgeable. Customer service is always very good, with the staff explaining the wines and food choices in detail. The manager is very friendly and extremely professional. Amazing choice of wines and fizz. The cheeses and hams are also top quality and very tasty, so would highly recommended a sharing platter to go with your wine. The olive oil crisps are also amazing! A record player with good selection of albums is playing in the background to add to the atmosphere. Wi-Fi, coffee cafetières etc. make this a great choice to hang out or have a drink with friends.

What a wonderful lovely experience ... our waiter was kind and explained each wine and the cheese which paired with it! We had a lovely view of the sun going down. Would definitely go back .. highly recommend

Looking for somewhere for lunch in Stockbridge, we came across this place. Liking both cheese and wine, it seemed worth a try. We enjoyed the upper level flight of three Aussie wines each with an appropriate cheese. At £20 it would be hard to call this a bargain, but both wines and cheese were of excellent quality, the latter in perfect condition. If we lived locally, we’d probably come here often, as it was we enjoyed the experience.

This was our first visit to Smith & Gertrude and we were not disappointed! We popped in mid-week and didn't need to book.

Enjoyed a pre-dinner bottle of wine with family but felt staff were a little lacking on their wine knowledge and the suggestions made were rolled out parrot fashion. The Verdecchio was OK, the almonds were great as were the truffle potato crisps but the bowl of crisps was pathetically small.We'll try you again though and see if we just came on an off night.

Sun and rain outside, not that unusual for Edinburgh in March. Inside, with a glass of a lovely light pinot and a decent structure, while snacking on a bowl of moreish truffle oil crisps. Great staff and a warm vibe to the bar, a perfect place to shelter from Spring showers.

We went in during the day. To be honest it wasn’t quite as awesome as some of the reviews would suggest. It’s simply ok.

My husband and I absolutely love this place! We love taking out of town guests here. I’ve gone several times for girls nights out with friends and my husband and I also enjoy going for date night. The service is excellent! The staff are extremely knowledgeable and friendly. They patiently answer questions and make suggestions. It is evident that the staff really enjoy working there. The environment is relaxed but beautiful. I highly recommend this place! It will not disappoint!

There's a few wine bars around, and this one seems a little gem. It's taken us a while to visit, but so glad we did.

Sorry it’s taken a while to leave this review, I can’t recommend this place enough though.

My husband and I were staying just a block away and went in for some wine one evening, we truly enjoyed our experience and the staff was incredibly knowledgeable about the wines we were tasting! The cheeses we tasted were amazing as well.

What a great way to spend an afternoon with friends. In the company of an excellent sommelier we had a great selection of wines. Highly recommended if you visit Edinburgh.

I visited here on a Saturday evening with friends. It’s a great spot for a relaxed night, great selection of wine and a good value cheese and meat selection. Would recommend if you’re looking to relax with a bottle of wine.

Not a bad bar, quite bland decor but I guess some would think it pleasant. Staff friendly and attentive. The only gripe I have is the prices. I paid nearly £20 for a 175ml of white wine and a few slithers of cheese and oatcakes. I'm not complaining about the quality of either, just that it was poor value for money.

Really love having this as one of our local bars and despite being a very high end wine list it has a relaxed feel often missing in some wine bars.

Nice, calm place to stop by. We were here in the afternoon before it possibly gets crowded. We hade been on a longer walk in the Stockbridge area and hade got this place recommended by a sommelier to taste some fun and not to well known wines. A lovely place to relax for a while, the interior is very simple with large windows out to the street.

Just been back to this "not so secret wine bar anymore" since they have been voted the best bar and "still the Daddy of Wine Bars" again in The List magazine. Always stuck for choice when I come here so I just go for a wine flight (and sometimes with cheese!) or two. Staff friendly and knowledgeable and the Vinyl just helps you to unwind.

I was recommended to visit this wine bar by a very close friend of mine, so during my latest business trip to Edinburgh I gave it go - and I wasn't disappointed. The location is lovely, right in the heart of Stockbridge. I was impressed at first by the wine selection, quite eclectic and diverse. We ordered the wine flight with cheese, and I was even more impressed after the thorough and totally enjoyable explanation given by one of the staff members, absolutely brilliant. Cheeses were just divine and the pairing with wines well thought. We also ordered the charcuterie selection, which was the other highlight of our visit.

More bread than cheese with the baked camembert Not impressed with the recommended wine. Very nice staff. Coffee...was it really coffee?.... ....undrinkable. Was also virtually empty over a lunch time period. Great music though.

Small venue with great selection of wines, both by bottle and glass. I chose to sit in the window seats, they then placed another couple next to us. We were all average sized people but it was too squashed. They then gave us the other couples bill, they weren't very apologetic about it. Whilst we were having the wine I heard a member of staff complaining that people were talking too loudly. For the prices I would expect better service. Loads of places near by with good wine and great service.

Everything I’ve put in he title. I cannot fault this place. Our waiter was great, very helpful and took the time to explain the different wines they had and what specials they had. Would definitely recommend.
