Sloan's Bar and Restaurant in Glasgow City

Got a Mac & Cheese Itison deal. Food was fantastic and huge portion. Staff were really friendly and genuine, first time here and will definitely be back.

Just popped in for a couple with my mate. So no cash taken, only contactless, which seems odd. In my local the reader goes down once in a while, so cash is acceptable as well. Don't know how they would cope if the system crashed, which does happen. Wee bit pricey as well.

We were looking forward to this visit to Glasgow’s oldest pub. Booked a table for 12:45. Service was slow to start then got worse. 50 mins for starter. Main course after 75 mins from booking. No time for desert because they needed the table back. Very poor customer service. “We’re very busy” they said. “We have a big table coming in”! Fine, but serve the table you need cleared quickly!!! We won’t be back !

We had not been out. for a while , so this was to be a treat for us. Despite it being April it was freezing, not helped by my current conditions (diabetes type 2 &Liver Disease). we booked a table the previous day, but didn't manage to get a booth , we had a table near door. it has 2 entrances , one through courtyard and the other through Argyle Arcade. so its not a cozy warm pub, its also very dimly lit. we ordered food and set up a tab , 1ST MISTAKE. unknown to us they automatically add a 10% service charge. i ordered the steak pie dinner with chips broccoli and peas. it wasn't bad but pricey at 12 pounds. My wife just had chips with cheese and gravy, this cost 7 pounds, again pricey for what it was. drinks are also dear 6 pounds for a pint and 12 pounds for a double gin and lemonade. its not a cozy pub so at no time did i feel relaxed and comfortable and despite 3-4 drinks did not feel any effects to justify the money spent. at around 76 pounds for 1 main a side and a few drinks i will not return in a hurry i think the included service charge is cheeky for 2 people sitting right at bar

Popped in for a drink and a bite to eat. Short staffed obviously as service very poor. Food less than average. Didn’t have the mac and cheese as not hungry enough but the small bites should have been brilliant. They weren’t. Won’t be going back.

Not for the cash drinkers This pub is another in the current spate of card only pubs. It should be noted however that Cash is legal tender POS is not. As such although not technically illegal to go cashless current legislation states that this requires to be prominently displayed before entering such premises. Alas Sloans does not adhere to the law and punters can be caught out. When asked what would be the scenario if the pub POS system failed would all beers be free?. I th got a gleakit (blank) look and a shrug of the shoulders. The beers are palatable but on the expensive side it is understandable considering the captured card rules. To be honest there are better establishments within walking distance of Sloans. This is one to avoid

1st time at Sloans and won’t be the last. Great atmosphere attentive staff, excellent food and wine. Mac and Cheese to die for!

Not having been in this place for some years, it was suggested that a group of friends should meet and eat here. The service was pretty slow and disorganised, despite it being reasonably quiet. Tables not cleared or cleaned. We finally got a table and ordered food. One of the 4 meals was just Ok. The other 3 were pretty awful and despite a complaint being made about 2 of the meals, which were more or less untouched, only 1 was removed from the bill. I certainly asked for the service charge to be removed as the service we received was virtually non existent. We won’t go back.

We booked Sloans in December for one of their bingo nights which was fantastic, winning a prize on the evening too. The prize was a £50 Itison Voucher. I contacted Sloans as per the cards instructions to obtain the Itison voucher code to use it on Itison to book an overnighter and emailed a picture of the card (prize) However Sloans advised that the voucher could only be used in Sloans or one of their sister restaurants. Not wanting to cause a fuss, as the prize stated £50 Itison voucher, I decided to book for a meal in Sloans on Sunday 21 January 2024. Food was fantastic, great portions and waiting staff kept drinks topped up. I then went to the bar to settle the bill and our server advised that he needed a manager to apply the voucher code to the bill which was fine. The manager arrived, and looked as if I'd interupted his break. He asked me for the voucher code, and I advised that I had no code, just a card saying I'd won a £50 voucher for Itison which I emailed to them. He then advised that he wouldnt apply the £50 voucher because I didnt have the voucher, and explained that I could be defrauding them by repeatedly using it. I explained that there was no code on the card and that they never gave me a voucher. This went on and I decided to just settle the bill as I was getting embarrased at the bar. The manager was rude and extremely unhelpful. Soured a great night. Sent an email last night with no resolve. Not sure how they couldnt have taken a note that the prize on 26/11/23 had been claimed to counteract any fraudulent claims, or what the script is with winning a £50 Itison voucher and only being allowed to use it in Sloans. Hope they sort it.

Cosy bar with pleasant service. Two Mac'n Cheese two wines £40. A bit pricey but fair enough. Then they had the cheek to add 10 "optional" service charge. I don't mind leaving a tip but I object to having it embarrassed out of me. Asked why they did it "The till just does it" was the reply. Wrote and asked them why they did it got a bland PR answer. Clearly don't care about people. Will not be back.

I get it, it's Christmas and it's busy. I've worked in hospitality over the years and it's a challenging and busy time. Do you know what isn't challenging - basic manners and serving etiquette. Unfortunately, the decent staff who are good - suffer at the hands of the grumpy, dismissive, and insular staff that let this place down. Here's the thing - when serving food or drink to a customer, you aren't doing them a favour - so tell your face that fact and acknowledge their custom and the transaction. And another wee tip - when you drop a dish onto customers half drunk pint, smashing it in your apparent rage to clear a table - maybe again, acknowledge the issue, and discuss a solution or at the very least, offer an apology for the outcome. Do not, huff and puff, turn your back and walk away. I'm half a pint down on this deal! I have never felt such tension while being served food in any pub/restaurant. Each course that was presented saw customers feeling nervous, asking this particular server questions or explanations of what was being put in front of them. Yes, it was a set meal, pre-selected and ordered - but take the time and listen to the customers and the issues will be resolved. Don't shout "I don't care, you need to take it" to a customer who suggested it wasn't her dish. The food was great, the portion size brilliant and the presentation of the plate was spot on. It's just a shame that it was thrown down with a frown.

Whilst in Glasgow we visited this lovely little pub. The mac and cheese was to die for. We went off the back of a recommendation from our friend!

Sloans has always been a magical bar but after our last visit we won't be rushing back. The staff on recent visits have been surly, unfriendly and tbh I only heard one speak and he was the only one who seemed to know what customer service was. We were nodded at when we asked for a drink and grunted at when we paid. I think the right staff with the work ethic for working in a bar keep people returning and Sloans need to get back to the drawing board with some basic friendly social skills Not asking a lot, just that I'm not inconveniencing anyone when I ask for a drink.

Sloans has been our go to when in Glasgow to meet friends. This was our first visit since covid. Booked a table for 4 on Sunday 3rd Dec. We arrived early so had drinks in the bar. A glass of wine cost just shy of £10 and was not a quality wine. The Pinot in particular was very wishy washy and I didn’t order any more. £3.60 for a 250ml can of Diet Coke? Ooft! Unfortunately we were unaware there was a musical bingo night on so it was really noisy - not ideal when wanting to talk while having dinner. We were approached twice by the guy hosting the bingo to ask if we wanted to play and twice told no as we were about to order food. His enthusiasm became irritating when he suggested we play while eating. Yep, as you do. As it got near to our slot for our table, I spoke to the barman who acknowledged what I said but then didn’t do anything about it. After 10mins, I spoke to another staff member who said we could just sit in the bar and eat. I explained that I had pre-booked the table for the restaurant online and that we had a member of our group who is significantly deaf in both ears so the noise was too much for him to be able to participate in conversation. She said that some people had specifically booked the restaurant. But so had I. When she suggested we stay at our bar seats, It was clear that no table had been specifically booked for us. Fortunately a table became available as people left early and we relocated to the restaurant. UNFORTUNATELY, musical bingo was also being played there. Luckily only one table of people were daft enough to play while eating, so we didn’t have to listen to many people shouting out. THE FOOD: 2mac n cheese with pulled pork and their chosen toppings 1 steak pie 1 chicken burger The Mac n cheese went down a treat with the 2 who had it. Although it’s amazing how Sloans capitalise on their add ons. Before you know it, your £11.75 man n cheese is now around 16 quid. When is Mac n cheese ever worth that price. No matter how good they claim it to be (not as good as mine, I promise! 😉). The steak pie was also enjoyed by our friend. Now, I don’t know if it is because these 3 were served in hot pie dishes, or because my order was ready earlier, but the chicken burger was lukewarm and the chips were freezing. My friend tried my chips and hers were definitely hotter. The food would have been a hit if it was hot, but I had no time to request a change because we had my sons performance to get to. As it is, I ate a quarter of the burger. I offered my friend a taste and she commented that it was cold. However, my husband will eat pretty much anything so he enjoyed half of it! Still, not great in terms of customer service. We ordered a cocktail for me and a bottle of Sauvignon for the table (at £24, better value than by the glass) , both of which went down a treat. Still cheap tasting wine, but better than the Pinot. Our deaf friend initially, when seated, ordered a glass of Sauvignon and was brought a pint of shandy. Either it’s contagious, or the server couldn’t hear him properly for the ruckus of the musical bingo taking over the place. Either way, it was fine as my husband said he’d have it, but still, bingo in a restaurant…. Nah. Overall bill for 4 with main courses, wine, shandy and a cocktail was £103. Wouldn’t say it was unreasonable for a city centre bar/restaurant. It was the pre dinner drink prices that were a shocker. Would I return for the food? Probably. Would the extortionate price of the cheap wine put me off going back? Yep.

Enjoyed our visit, and the macaroni cheese was excellent. Drink prices were very high, and I am not a fan of paying by card for everything. Staff were helpful and friendly.

Myself and 2 other mates were out for the day to drink. We pre-booked online and their "DesignMyNight" service gave us the option for drinks and to sit inside. When the day comes however they tell us we can only get food because of "National Restrictions". I told the person that we were wanting alcohol and told them we booked specifically for this. They did not listen, told us we could not sit outside at a table, nor made any effort to get us seated outside and overall the attitude of "oh well don't blame me" is attrocious. This isn't the first time we've had issues with Sloans. We used to love the place and called it "home". These days we are made to feel like complete strangers. I never wish any business ill health, but I make an exception for Sloans. We wont be back. BEWARE to every other person who sees this as well. Their DesignMyNight online booking system is an absolute farce.

I've just been online to try to book an outside table for drinks. I would have to pay a non refundable £20 per person! I understand that many places are taking a deposit at this time, but this is taking the mick.

Cheeky staff, in particular guy with flowery shirt. Am not his “buddy” either. Very abrupt and not very helpful.

My partner and I stopped by here on Monday as part of an overnight stay in Glasgow. I'd booked in advance and for some reason expected it to be sunny... It wasn't! Torrential rain and very windy but we stayed warm and dry. Place had a good atmosphere and the staff were friendly. Were kind enough to offer us a table next to a heater when one became available! Only slight grumble was having to pay £20pp when booking a table, which was non-refundable (this is used as credit for when you attend). Felt this was quite pricey but we managed to use it!

What a great day we had! Food was fantastic as was the service! Special thanks to Ross for making our day!
