First time we went the toasties were brilliant, since then we have tried to go in on 3 different Sundays with family in which they have not had gluten free bread. Unfortunately we won’t be returning anymore, allergies should be catered for throughout everyday of the week 😞

Lovely place, with some lovely items for sale too. Food good…. But… sadly the service at the food counter from the ladies does need some improvement. Not sure if they’re overly busy that they can’t be personable or if it’s because they just don’t have natural genuine people skills needed for this type of work. We felt we were inconveniencing them when requesting our order - no smiles, no looking up, saying, ‘won’t keep you a moment’… just leave you standing there waiting whilst they do other things. Important to mention - it is counter ordering only - so there isn’t any table order service - which personally slows things down, causes a queue and therefore adds pressure to the ladies behind the counter, thus not offering the service that is needed. I’m sorry to be negative on the customer service - but if there was just a slight improvement in this very important area - then it could be one of the most popular places for brunch/lunch on the High St.

A very interesting cafe with record shop, as well as gifts. The 4 of us had a variety of hot drinks and cakes, the carrot cake was the clear winner! I will say the service wasnt great ( all teenage girls) very slow and forgot milk and sugar etc so had to ask. Was nice other than that

What a huge disappointment; we travelled from Southend as in the past this cafe has been amazing. Today we were served by numerous teenage girls who , unfortunately, didn't have a clue! A smoked salmon salad consisted of a few salad leaves, sliced tomato and cucumber on a plate; squashed slices of avocado 'chucked' on the plate with a chunk of smoked salmon (unseparated slices). A toasted cheese and ham sandwich was medicore; a jcket potato with prawns was served with no more than 4/5 prawns. Our coffees were served cold with more in the saucer than the cup...we had to ask for clean saucers and napkins...znd cutlery. An elderflower drink was completely forgotten and we needed to ask for it! This was so different to our usual experience of Slipoed Discs where the food and drinks are fantastic. The staff today were friendly and pleasant but severely lacking in hospitality and catering skills!

Visited last Saturday with Friend, Looked very inviting from the front of shop. We ordered Cheese Sandwich & cup of Tea, & Bacon Sandwich coffee was asked if I wanted Sauce. We politely requested Hot drinks be served with meal. Hence didnt happen. Even worse my friends Cheese was cut so thick, & No Cup of Tea arrived at all. Was charged £9.50 for Bacon Sandwich with few broken crisps on the side??? The pot of sauce was enough to decorate 6 sandwiches, although tasted tangy & Cheap. My friend was charged £8.10 for a Cheese Sandwich that looked like a 2yr old had cut the Cheese! She returned to young ladies, explained service was not acceptable, Some of the girls were so rude & for want of better word down right Ignorant. Even worse tried to give her refund for Cup of tea price Only! Will not return again, as when i brought it to the ladies attention on the till, she gave an excuse that they had been very busy. She actually said come back during the week its run by Adult people, the service is good. Confirms my thoughts these girls sadly have little or No training. Not opposed to paying decent price for food but this was a Total Rip Off! Would most definitely Not recommend at all. I wouldnt have even given 1 star but in order to leave review you have to at least leave 1.

Came here with my partner for a quick coffee whilst passing through the high-street. Very quirky, unique place with a super chilled vibe. Lots of people on a solo visit. It’s a cafe that also sells old records and CDs. Dog friendly. Super friendly staff and quick service. Their regular latte is more like a small. We didn’t eat but the food looked great, although it seemed slightly over priced. Also, the decor could do with being updated. But I would be happy to visit again.

Brown sugar usually has a good variety of lunch items-sandwiches & cakes etc and they also have a few gluten free products. Service is usually ok but I was disappointed with the customer service during my last visit. I took my granddaughter for tea and despite there being 4 ladies behind the counter, I was left standing waiting. No one acknowledged me or explained I would be dealt with. I had to make my presence known to them. Even after speaking to them I was still left to wait so decided to leave.

Perhaps it was a bit of a bad day Manager was letting people sit down (at the front in his clear view) before ordering food as requested on the signage. He then also went behind the food counter with his mask under his chin when we left he was wearing no mask at all. Sat outside as was felt over crowded inside. Didn’t sit at our allocated table as we was clearly not 2 metres from the people at the next table. Also it was cold as no heating and the large gaps letting the cold air and wind in.

My wife and I took my mother for lunch here while we were visiting her. One would expect a cafe in Billericay to be able to serve what they have on their board, but apparently not always. My wife's tuna mayo sandwich was simply made with tinned tuna; not a hint of mayonaise in it. She had to ask for some mayonnaise to make it edible. The rest of the food was OK, but overpriced - well, it is Billericay, I suppose. Having a cafe in a record shop is a great idea, but having staff that are actually able to make the food they advertise as available would be a great improvement.

I visit Brown Sugar quite often, the coffee, cake and sandwiches are normally good - albeit pricey. The café has a nice vibe. On Sunday they had three young girls serving and running the café who really didn't want to be there. When it was served my freshly made egg mayo sandwich was laced with English mustard - not a great combination. When I questioned the error I was told by the young sandwich maker that the sandwich board said Egg Mayo with Mustard. I pointed out that it said Egg Mayo with Mustard Cress! Quite a different thing. More eye rolling from behind the counter! I still don't think she got it. I think it's fair to say that two of the girls behind the counter didn't want to be there ... and didn't care. It won't stop me visiting again - just not on a Sunday!

A queue of probably thirty people all as the big hot drinks. NOBODY WANTED A CHEESE SANDWICH. They just wanted a hot drink for the service. Surely you don’t have to be Einstein to realise that you could have all hands to the pump (coffee machine) before the service and then, when half of Essex is standing outside your shop paying respects, make the sandwiches then !!!!

I like sitting here and enjoying the coffee but the service is so slow I always expect food to be cold when it arrives. Also so many yummy mummys like it that they block the table areas with prams - not the cafe's fault but off-putting. Comfy, relaxing and tasty - just what a good coffee shop should be.

I visited here with my daughter.I was reluctant ,having visited several times before and the service is so slow.It is not waitress service ,though this is not reflected in the prices. It is more "Star Bucks", which I always avoid.Having observed one member of staff scratch her bottom ,touch her hair I was quite put off.Her colleague informed her ."I need the toilet" and disappearedShe was wearing nail polish and handling food.My food!!!I informed her colleague of this, she informed me ,it was Shellac,as if this was ok.Accepting I may be over reacting, I waited for the food. However feeling quite sick at the thought of nail polish ,I left pretty quickly.I will not be recommending this establishment or revisiting.

A great place for a quick catch-up, or somewhere to linger and work if you are on your own. They have gluten-free food (the chocolate brownies are unbelievable) and comfy sofas. Love it !

This is a wonderful place, full of surprises. On walking past, it simply looks like a music store with its display of CDs in the window. However, further inside hides the most gorgeous cafe. The decor is amazing, with iconic posters and the most incredible Beatles mural painted along the length of the back wall. The food was lovely- we had homemade soup, which was absolutely stunning, followed by freshly baked cakes- very naughty but nice! There is a choice of table seating or sofas to relax on, and the atmosphere is really welcoming and friendly. Excellent service and great prices make this a must-visit if you are in Billericay shopping!!

Saw the sign outside offering GF sandwiches, toasties and traybakes - eat in or take-away. I couldn't resist - especially the combination of a GF café AND a record store !! Nice atmosphere, busy, but a small queue is nothing if the food is good. I wasn't disappointed. Well worth a visit - the record shop manager is brilliant, and as Waterstones, WH Smiths etc have done recently - having a café in-store means that much maligned record shops can keep going. Give it a try !

We are becoming fairly regular and this smart and quirky cafe which doubles up as a record shop. Nicely furnished, pleasant service, great coffee, and the paninis and wraps are freshly made and superb. The only downside is that if you order a sandwich or the delicious home made soup you are served with what I would describe as supermarket sliced bread. It would be so much nicer with the real thing. Have a panini or wrap instead.

Been here quite a few times over the years and loved it. Well that was until last weekend. My daughter and I went here for a treat. I order two paninis, a cake and two drinks. Paid and waited, and waited. The paninis arrived after about ten minutes and I would add the place was not busy and only 25% full, but no drinks or cake. I went to the counter to get teh drinks which was as ordered a cappuccino and an Appletiser and got the coffee and two different apple drinks. I said I only ordered one and the waitress asked which . I showed her and she removed one apple drink. I asked if I had been charged for two and she said no but I could not check this as they do not give an itemised reciept. I asked where teh cake was and they had forgotten it too.The staff are young teenagers mostly and seem more content in chatting to each other than providing a service. I can see why the number of users has declined now!

Stopped here for lunch on my own during the week. The idea of combining a cafe and a record store is a really good one. In theory this should be the best place have a snack/lunch on Billericay High Street; quirky, lots of opportunity to be different etc. But when I left, I just felt a bit disappointed. In terms of the product itself, I ordered a jacket potato and it was distinctly average. There was a hint that the potato itself was underdone and the salad came with no dressing and was about as bare as it is possible to get. The food tasted OK, but overall I felt a bit more effort could have been put in. In addition, this cost £4.75; quite a lot for one potato and some leaf salad. In general, the menu suggested quite high prices for not much reward, though that may be unfair as I have only eaten there once. The surroundings were nice enough, but the outside area was a little unclean and showed some signs of being unkept during spring or at least not prepared for the summer (grime/dirt on the awnings). The service was good and the food arrived quickly. One small point, which may be pertinent for people in a hurry, is that it looks like the cafe shares the card machine with the record shop. For this reason, the staff have to go and retrieve it before you can pay by card. If you were in a rush, this would be an unwelcome surprise. So, overall, it's fine as far as it goes, but is quite average and a bit disappointing given the potential.

You can tell this business makes most of its money from the coffee shop but the record shop is a bit of an unorganised mess with records lying everywhere. The coffee shop employs very young staff that do not appear to have had much experience in the industry. Could be nicer food (I.e. Sandwiches & paninis), & coffee but cakes are good. Very expensive!

In High Streets filled with the ubiquitous coffee shop chains it's a real pleasure to eat at Slipped Disc/Brown Sugar. I come with my two daughters every Saturday and take it turns to dine as they each have a cello lesson. My eldest things the milkshakes and paninis are the best for miles around and my youngest loves nothing more than a Cinnabun! Great to have the music section at the front (reminds me of buying LPs up Muswell Hill in my youth) and the young staff are always polite, helpful and cheerful.

It is unique that a record shop and a coffee establishment should co exist but Karl has managed to make this work. The refreshments are superb (the frappe ever!!!), the food is good (check out the home made buns) ranging from sandwiches, toasted paninies, soups and jacket potatoes.A great independent local establishment that welcomes everyone and that offers a unique experience to browse the CD's and second hand vinyl while you wait or after you have eaten. All this and friendly staff. Karl himself is not backward in coming forward and will engage in conversation, especially if you touch on his latest favourite artist... The customer comes first here!!!

I take my 20 year old Bichon Frise most days for breakfast where Siddyboy is treated like a king, the staff bend over backwards to make you and/or your fur babies very welcome. Adore the place and staff, a big thank you to everyone

Nice clean place, but that is all I can say was good. The worst pie & mash I've ever had, the meal was only luke warm, and the pies were under cooked, there was a group on another table that complained about their meal being cold, and then walked out leaving the food on the table. This was my first time in this restaraunt and will be my last.

Staff were nice but didn’t seem to know what they were doing. Fingers and hands all over the coffee glass rim. Three things I asked for they didn’t have. Had to ask for a glass for the bottle of lemonade (which was third choice). Sat outside because we had a dog and to enjoy the sun - in a cloud of staff Vaping in the doorway next to us and smokers the other side. Never returning, plenty of other places in high st that know how to run things properly.
