Traditional Sunday Roast, delicious!

Rundown pub - felt dirty inside. The booth seating had some metal trim sticking up which caught my jeans and ripped a thread. There was a menu outside but no menus inside or any sign of any food being served.

Horrible staff make you feel stupid for asking the difference in beers they sell. Shouted at to put phone away when trying to pay contactless. Then shouted at upstairs again (we were the only two people there) to get off your phone, note we were googling and not on a call. Final straw, put all the chairs up around us 1 hour before closing, what a joke

Bar located in the heart of Manchester. We enjoyed the beer and the typical English steak pie. It has a very large terrace and the best price of beer in the city. Advisable.

Lovely place, great staff, good priced drinks

Fantastic atmosphere, but it's impossible to eat anything if you don't go early. Of course, you can take whatever you want to accompany the beer. Without a doubt the cheapest and most authentic in the center of Manchester.

Doorman greeted me and my 11 year old warmly and informed us that kids are welcome until 1800. Great start. Left my kid to watch the seats outside and went to find the toilet. I asked a lady behind the bar “excuse me, where are the toilets please”. Was snapped at that I wasn’t in the queue. I repeated my request as maybe she just misheard. Nope was told I needed to queue to ask??? Managed to find them myself. Went back to the bar and queued like a good boy as to not be scolded again. Got half a lemonade and a soda and lime. It was £4.90! Asked if there was a mistake and was again snapped at and told to check the receipt. Was about to say I didn’t get one when one was thrown at me. There were 9 charges on the receipt. I asked why and the barmaid walked off. Dude behind the bar then kept repeating “what’s the issue here” not allowing me to actually explain. Went to find my kid with my alleged 9 drinks only to find them being hassled for daring to look at their phone. I was then scolded a 3rd time for not magically knowing it’s one of those dismal places with signs on the wall saying “try talking to each other”. When I pointed out that I paid with contactless the dude went red in the face. Extremely confusing and rude staff. Definitely wouldn’t recommend.

Really nice place in good weather, not really explored the interior but the beer is nice and they offer some of the most inexpensive prices in the area...

Atmosphere is always great around this place on dry sunny days, as outside is always full and sometimes there is good music from the guy in the wheelchair. Service can be slow to clear tables and also to get served, the queues can be long and time consuming to get a beer.

The exterior of this pub definitely caught the eye of my wife and I, we couldn't resist visiting. We were greeted by friendly bar staff who gave a brief history of the building to us, we couldn't believe it has actually moved locations over the years. We were encouraged by the bar staff to explore the upper floor as there were records and photographs of the aforementioned moving of the building. We ordered drinks and a good old Fish and Chips each, and opted to sit outside, clinging to the last hope of some decent weather. However, in typical Manchester fashion, the drizzle ensued so we rushed inside, luckily there's lots of snugs to choose from. It was a shame we had to go inside, as my wife and I love to sit outside and watch the world go by. We noticed on our way inside that the establishment adjacent had a large canopy that was unfurled upon the arrival of the rain. It's a shame that the Oyster bar didn't have any form of cover outside. However, there were plenty of snugs to choose from and we were happy with where we ended up. The food was delivered promptly by another friendly member of staff. The food was lovely, the beer crisp and the customer service faultless. We were able to have a chuckle with the staff that were working when we'd visit the bar, full credit to them. We're looking forward to our return!

Good beer to go with an excellent Sunday Lunch of roast beef , all the staff were great. Definitely worth another visit.

Visted with family for a birthday after reserving tables. Staff had no manners at all seemed like they couldnt be bothered. After a long wait food started to arrive soup was cold had to be semt back and burger was not cooked had to be sent back. If only that was the end of the issue after a 50 minute wait and most of the party having finished there meals 3 of us were still waitong for our food. We requested refund to be met with attitude from one of the staff that its not his problem there busy. Another man appeared and agreed to refund us but at same point didnt take responsibility for issue instead stating we all ordered seperate and we were not the only customers so what do we expect. As we all ordered one after another and the 3 meals that didnt arrive were ordered before some that did i dont feel this is a valid explination. And what ever u do dont order wine glasses hanging on bar look like they have never been washed if id spotted this before ordering the food never would have ordered for fear of hygine issues. Highly dissapointed and would reccomend to avoid at all costs

Authentic Pub in Manchester, very nice

We always visit here as it's such a lovely pub. We only go for drinks. The atmosphere is always great.

Sat outside on a partially sunny afternoon, lovely place! Had pints, beans and homemade fish sticks. Everything was very fine and staff was lovely. Thank you!

Went for a drink and food on a Friday 5pm. Wanted fish and chips. Queued at first bar. Sorry we can’t serve you , you need to order food at different bar. Queued at next bar, waited 15 mins to be told…..Sorry, no fish. Ok how about a Sauvignon blanc. No, we’ve run out. We left. What a joke of an establishment.

This place is absurdly brilliant. First of all the drinks are so great they get you pissed after two glasses. Secondly they serve oysters that are so massive you can hardly open your mouth on them. Thirdly the fish is so fresh and liver what can say you need to go here!

**Review:** The food was just OK. Unfortunately, disappointing experience. My soup was left on the counter and served cold, which was quite disappointing. The condiments basket was gross, with dirty ketchup and mayo refill bottles that I didn't even want to touch, shows neglect. The bar staff made no effort to suggest a different drink when they didn't have the one I asked for. Another patron at the bar ended up making a suggestion instead. Additionally, I suspect that the pies were microwaved. Overall, a very underwhelming experience.

Lovely place with extremely cheap drinks

This bar lives up to it's name. You can buy actual oysters here! Although I haven't tried them myself, I'd like to one day! This is a Samuel Smith's pub (the brewer, not the singer with the large head). Fun fact Samuel Smith is the nephew of John Smith. Being a Sam Smith means great value beers. You won't find carlsberg in here. It's all their own stuff. Which I enjoy. I also love the quirky and historical design of the building. A great watering hole in the heart of Manchester city centre. Just a stones throw away from victoria station (well maybe about 5 stone throws). It's easy to get to on foot (if you're in the city centre), rail or tram!

Bar in the historical building located in the city center offering also outside seating area. We spent there nice sunny afternoon and it was full of people. Just few drinks from which I would mention organic beer. There is no service outside but it is still worth an experience. There are also tables located inside.

Visited 20 May for pre concert meal and a pint. Ordered 2x chicken salads and 1x burger. After 1 hour 10 minutes food had not arrived. I asked about it, and staff apologised and said it had been missed in the kitchen and " it wouldn't be long.". Another 20 minutes and it arrived. Processed chicken pieces in the salad but the burger was good. Had to rush our food and missed part of the show due to the hold up. It wasn't busy. We have eaten there before and it was good. Very disappointed.

For me, one of the most authentic restaurants in Manchester, the place is incredible and all its rooms transport you back to the past. The downside is that you have to go to the bar to order and people don't take turns. They were also very slow in serving us, since it took about 45 minutes. The food has its lights and shadows, it was Sunday and we ordered the dish that they only serve that day and the steak was so hard that it was difficult to eat, the rest of the food was good and the beer was very cold and at a very cheap price for Manchester.

The pub offers a diverse selection of beers, which is highly commendable. It embodies the quintessential English pub atmosphere with a pleasant ambiance. The prices are reasonable, especially considering its prime location. In fact, they are more affordable compared to other restaurants and pubs in the city. This establishment is undoubtedly a must-visit destination in Manchester!

A nice old Tudor building. It gets very busy, probably because it’s quite cheap. It was busy when I entered, both inside and in the outside seating area. Good atmosphere. I’d definitely order food next time.

We had first gone to the more famous one next door but luckily it was full and we entered here to discover that this is actually the oldest of the 2 places and the atmosphere inside confirms it. It was Sunday and we tried the Sunday Roast which was really excellent, plentiful and without exaggerating the price. Not a great choice of beer but the few they have are excellent! If you happen to be in Manchester and especially on Sunday you must go here.

Really rustic pub, we were able to play a few games and drink some delicious beer. Highly recommended for a social evening. Prices were OK.

Atmospheric pub. Nice and warm upstairs. Great service but the bogs could do with a refurb.

I wanted to drink a beer and it didn't work out well for me. This pub aims to be "select" and reserves the right to welcome customers or not according to the dress code. In addition, the tables are not clean. It doesn't make you want to go back there to eat.

The best hot food. Huge amounts of food, I ordered a large Fish & Chips and it was just gigantic. The same thing happened with a cheese & onion pie....fantastic. The bar is very nice and traditional, there are several varieties of beer, I had a Samuel Adams Extra Stout and it was delicious. It is a place to eat well and have a great time. If you go to Manchester you must visit it.

Fantastic quirky little bar in the centre of the city. Samuel Smith's, so ridiculous how cheap it is, well under £6 for 2 pints. Great beer garden (weather permitting obviously) Inside 1) no dogs (shame) they are catered for outside. 2) no swearing 3 no mobile phones! At all! You might be asked to leave if you don't get off it. They encourage conversation! How novel. Ancient pub, full of history from the 14th century, even accepts none cash now. Half the price of the one next door.

A legendary Manchester pub. Cheap and cheerful with friendly and efficient staff. The beer is good for a Samuel Smiths and it's full of friendly people. It does get very busy so be warned, you may struggle to get a seat inside on a wet and chilly Manchester evening. Well worth the visit

Lovely old pub with a stunning interior - Unique beers, some better than others.

I only drank a pair of beers but it’s possible to have lunch or supper. Good prices and service. The building, which is so beautiful its outdoor, has two floors and there are lots of tables in different rooms.

It's always mint in here. Cosy comfy good drink selection, happy staff, chilled atmosphere. Around winner 🏆

What an absolute smashing pub this is. Steeped in history and culture. It is one of my favourite places in the whole of greater Manchester.

Staff were great espscially Kyle, drinks are superb as alqays for Sam Smith, the Alpine lager!

Nice priced beer in a nice pub. Unfortunately on our visit just after the new year, the staff decided to leave the front door wide open, when it was 6 degrees outside. So upped sticks to find a warmer pub.

Decent food, no oysters though which was a disappointment. Food was brought in good time and tasted nice and fresh. Staff a little unfriendly but not rude. Pub has a great aesthetic and good atmosphere. Had the Whitby Scampi with Chips, my partner had the fish goujons.

Will be back for the pint, not for the food. Soup was room temperature, as was the BLT.

Wow what can I say, flat atmosphere, flat beer and the lady serving us had a face that would turn milk, various patronising signs warning against swearing, using mobiles etc, do your self a favour go elsewhere.

We wanted to have a traditional pub experience and this may be it. They have an official no cell phone policy so I had to sneak these pics. Unlike their name, they don’t server oysters (say What?) They were out of fish, which was also a bummer, but we ordered the Chili Con Carne and Vegan burger instead. Overall the food was ok, but the chips were fantastic—crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. We tried the Alpine lager which was good. The place was packed and it was really hard to find a table. The lady at the bar was super grumpy, but the younger workers seemed happier. Maybe that’s by design??? They have a large beer garden outside which is probably super fun in the spring and summer. It was cool to be in a historic pub.

Beautiful pub inside and outside unfortunately it's a Sam smiths so you just get Sam Smith lager Sam Smith bitter Sam Smith mild Sam Smith stout Sam Smith roller cola etc no phones no laptops no swearing no shouting so great to come and sit in peace and quiet bit like a doctors waiting room. Oh yeah very surprised that the luddites are not cash or magic beans, for a technology phobic place you can actually pay by card. Food took ages to arrive. Order short of meal. Other meals cold. Dissapointed.

Not impressed at all. Cold, uptight, lacking in atmosphere. WHO WANTS TO SEE RULES WHEN YOU’RE ON A NIGHT OUT?! Give your punters credit, we are not school children! To be forbidden to use our phones (or to swear) it felt like being at school! You do not want to see rules in a venue where you’re looking to relax and have fun. The place has passive aggressive signs dotted around reminding you how to behave- Not cool. I fully appreciate sharing how you would like your pub to be and to encourage people to be sociable, but to prohibit use of phones and to tell people not to swear, it just seems a bit odd and patronising! Surely if there’s anyone who is acting antisocially, you can ask them to clean up their act ( or leave) don’t patronise your other punters. It made me feel uptight and I couldn’t wait to leave. Thoroughly enjoyed going into another pub nearby to experience a friendly atmosphere which was warm and cosy… and also a bit of background music, what’s the harm in that?! Couldn’t fault the bar staff, poor souls! Seemed like a good selection of drinks too, I just hated being there personally!

My friend and I went for a pint at sinclairs and then another, we decided to eat there and the staff couldn't have been more helpful. My friend is disabled and uses crutches, we managed to make it upstairs and found the only free table. When we went to the bar to order food and she saw where we sat, she immediately moved us to a downstairs room with a large table and access to the disabled facilities. The food and service was wonderful, my only disappointment was the oysters had run out 😁

Visited today for lunch,lovely quirky building nice staff, the food was only very “average” with much better locally. My partners lasagne was only “ warm” at best , the 2 small pieces of garlic Bread were limp and insipid. The chef today definitely wasn’t at their best. Definitely wouldn’t be back again for food.
