Simpson's Nurseries Coffee Shop in East Cambridgeshire

Scrambled eggs on toast I expected nice food here, garden centre cafes tend to serve nice food, however the Eggs were cooked in the microwave, rubbery and tasteless, it’s not difficult so scramble an egg in a pan now is it.

Very disappointing. Coffee machine broken and the cakes could have been far better. I'm not sure if it's the current roadworks but they are quiet. I would say for the time being if you want coffee and cake go elsewhere e.g. Scotsdales, Fordham.

Polite and speedy service, well priced food and drinks. Serves a variety of dishes that suit various dietary requirements, and the food was lovely.

It’s the first time we’ve been here and it definitely won’t be the last, the lunch was served promptly and was deliciously hot. Well Worth a visit. Used to go to the other garden centre in the village but not anymore, this is the one for us

Very attentive and quick service. Ordered a regular americano, it was more like a weak filter coffee. I came mostly for the amazing selection of plants on offer at competitive prices, so overall well worth a visit.

We used to love Simpsons but we found today it has gone downhill. Staff in coffee shop ok but food was not as good as it was, had something floating in my tea so had to ask for a new cup and also door to tent area left open and was a massive draft so again had to ask the staff to close the door! The nursery was not much better, staff not helpful at all, can't be bothered, I'm afraid I won't be returning, time to find a new nursery to get good food and plants

Went for birthday breakfast. Staff were excellent and very helpful. There was plenty of food which was well presented and very hot. A great experience. A big thank you to all concerned. Helped to make my birthday a great day.

Had I read the reviews going back to 2023 for this place we most definitely would not have visited for lunch. We visited on 26th March 2024. I had ham , egg and chips with salad and my wife had the Caesar salad. These were followed by an apple pie and a lemon meringue. All were very good and we were served by pleasant and helpful staff. We didn't have to wait too long, considering they were very busy and it is obviously popular. We would happily return if we are in that area again. It is also an excellent garden centre with, mostly, very good quality plants. ( I am a keen gardener, once worked at a garden centre and recognise good quality when I see it. )

Staff were excellent, helpful and friendly. We had tea cakes which were very tasty& hot chocolate which was great. Will certainly return.

Popped in on a chilli day for a coffee and a cake. Attentive service, but I was underwhelmed by the standard of both the flat white( watery and lacking taste) and the slice of gluten-free ginger cake. I use the nursery fairly often, but I won't be tempted to use the cafe again. Average.

My partner and I arrived at the nursery having already visited several locations on our shopping trip, we were both ready for a coffee and something to eat. As we entered the premises there was a notice saying 'please wait to be seated' which of course we did. It was by now around 2.30 pm the premises were very quiet no one else was waiting to be seated there were lots of empty tables and a member of staff seated at one of the tables eating her lunch. We noticed 4 other staff members one was walking between the rooms the other 3 were talking behind the counter. Now in no way do I mind waiting for a few moments in this situation but this became unbelievable we were just being ignored! It felt like we were an unwelcome intrusion. Personally I felt very uncomfortable embarassing even the staff member eating her lunch dare not look up at us! My partner asked if we could take a seat and was greater with a long silence and then asked what will you be wanting, the restaurant operate tsble service not self service do we left trying to decide what we wanted without a menu! I decided we would leave we we went to the other garden centre in the village and it couldn't have been more different self service absolutely fine, a warm greeting from property trained staff, pleasant surroundings, we wnt be returning to Simpsons other than for our plants!

Managed to get a smile out of the staff. Couldn't really be bothered to tell us what sort of cakes they had. The food was just ok and no staff came bk to our table either to ask if every thing was OK or to see if we needed any more drinks. Only came to table aw she was leaving to clear our plates. Wont be going again

Was told it was a 35 minute wait before we ordered which was good but when you looked round the place was only half full and staff not working hard enough. To deal with that you need a manager who can manage. The food was over priced for what it was. The baked potato came with a salad which was ok but very small and the potato was microscopic if it had been twice the size it would have been ok. It was, as I said, far too expensive for what it was. I nearly gave it 2 star because the young waitress with long hair was working hard and was personable but because I am still hungry am a bit grumpy

First time eating here. Initial service great, welcomed sat down menus etc and nice clean tables. Then unfortunately we were forgotten, once food ordered it took over 40 mins (after requesting again) Unfortunately 2 meat items we felt were not cooked (even compared to other diners with same breakfast). I think we had been totally forgotten therefore breakfast made quickly or they were short staffed today either way we complained and showed the under cooked food to our waitress and other team members which was discounted. We won’t be returning.

Awful, was told it would be upto 30 minute wait despite restaurant half full ( lady thought it was very busy ) ordered 2 coffees , a sausage baguette and a soup of day with a cheese scone, coffee came ten minutes later then 45 minutes after that the food came, no cheese scone as ran out and wasn’t told, and the sausages were half cooked so said we didn’t want them, ridiculous service and standards won’t be going back ( they had plenty of staff too )

Had not been to coffee shop before, primarily came to garden centre and thought we’d try it for a quick bite at lunch time. Lots of choice, good value, simple but good.

Had lunch today with a friend. Smiley service and great sandwiches - they don’t skimp on the fillings and the bread and salad garnish is very fresh! The coffee was too strong for my taste but that’s a personal thing. It was very busy and tables are close together so sometimes hard to hear but I’d go back every day for that egg Mayo baguette!

Please don’t waste your hard earned money!! £12.90 for a smoked salmon salad! Absolutely disgusting, it was like a side salad with small pieces of smoked salmon, my friend had a smoked salmon sandwich with same amount of salmon along with a side salad bigger than mine for half the price, how is that justified? I did mention it to a member of staff that took it back as I wanted it clarified that it was a full salad, it came straight back with a yes! I came home and had a sandwich as I was starving. I would never set foot back in there again nor will my friends.

there was lots of staff standing around doing nothing (chatting to each other). Once we placed our order there was a very long wait for food. We ordered cheese sandwiches so no cooking time required. It wasn’t busy when we were there. The crockery was dirty and had to be replaced. Again you had t9 wait ages to get staff members attention, they were too busy doing nothing except chatting with each other. Shame really as food is usually good.

I recently visited Simpson's Nurseries Coffee Shop and while the staff weren't exactly the friendliest bunch, their food certainly made up for it! My breakfast was perfectly cooked and I'd have to say it was certainly worth the visit. Just make sure you don't try to start a conversation with the staff - that would be a mistake!

Met a friend for a late breakfast, greeted by a pleasant enough lady (blond hair and glasses)who advised that no sausages available, fair enough but makes a mockery of the rather authoritarian instruction on the menu that no alterations can be made to the set breakfast choice. Order taken at the table by a different also pleasant lady (also blond hair and glasses). Id ordered the sam to eat as my friend, toast with a side order of beans and in addition bacon and black pudding. My food arrived served by a 3rd female staff member (short, stocky build and dark hair) but minus the baked beans. I pointed this out politely and was challenged by this charmless employee to the effect I hadn’t ordered them, no apology. She then turned to the lady who had taken the order ( I have no issue that she omitted them from the order, anyone can make a mistake) and then barked at her to ‘make sure they go on the bill’ within my sight and hearing. The beans came, the breakfast was mediocre and the performance of the woman who obviously has a higher opinion of herself than others might coupled with cold stark surroundings are sufficient to encourage me to go elsewhere. There’s no place for rudeness like this when business claim they are struggling, and there is a perfectly good alternative venue almost next door. I’d have given a good service rating but for the antics of this rude woman.

Called in was very busy. Took over 30 minutes to get food. In some ways that is a good sign. Panini was tasty and fresh. Came as request without mayo. Due to wait got tea topped up.

Pie of the day was the worst pie I've ever had. Pastry was a soggy mess, I don't think it had been cooked in an oven, just put in the microwave. Served with water gravy and peas like bullets. So disappointing.

I was very disappointed with my trip here yesterday for lunch. I had booked a table for two at 12.30. This was booked the day before. When we arrived we were told we had not booked and they were fully booked. I showed the waitress my phone with call, date and time I phoned so they did find us a table.I ordered a jacket potato with cheese and butter. The potato had obviously been cooked for some time as the skin was hard, dark and like leather. Consequently, only the inside of it was edible. I told the waitress when she took my plate away and seeing that she skin was left, asked me if it was ok. I told her it was like leather. She said she would tell the chef. When we came to pay, the waitress said if that happens again, tell her at once and they would change it. I would ask myself why would the chef send something like that out. I'm sure he wouldn't have been pleased with it. No money was taken off the bill for a less than half eaten meal. Added to that the ladies toilets needed a good clean. Very disappointed in Simpsons on that occasion as usually it is quite a nice place to lunch.

Just back from Breakfast at Simpsons this morning. Cannot praise everyone highly enough. All precautions were taken and social distancing adhered to. there was a lovely atmosphere. And the breakfast? Well it totally knocks spots off another well know local garden centre. It was freshly cooked, hot, plentiful and very reasonably priced. Our allegiance has changed! We WILL be back and have recommended it to friends. The garden centre which we often frequent for our plantsis also extremely well stocked with excellent quality produce and friendly staff willing to assist. A great success all round.

They have got the restrictions just right very clean and staff polite food well presented. You can even take dogs into courtyard. Large car park staff very helpful in cafe and garden center

The sun was shinning so I opted for a ham ploughman’s. Was seated quickly and swiftly, staff busy and in control at this dreaded time. Pork pie and ham was well matched served with coleslaw, pickle and salad. The bread warm and crispy so throughly enjoyed my little treat.

Such a shame as always used to be pretty good. Ordered a ploughman's which was recommended by someone who visited a good few months ago. Firstly they forgot to put cheddar on it! Ok mistakes happen but when pointed out the cheddar was missing the waitress said it didn't come with cheddar! Well, its a cheese and ham ploughmans and the menu clearly states it does in fact come with cheddar. Waitress had attitude when I pointed out that yes it should come with cheddar and bought out a cheap pot of packet grated cheddar. No apology. No ploughmans pickle either. Rest of it was fine, but massively let down by the cheap and nasty grated cheddar and not at all worth the inflated price they now charge. Also came with what should have been a nice baguette bread but which they sliced up all fancy into small bits so it dried out and was horrible by the time you got to the second bit. Provided butter enough for one tiny bit so had no butter on the rest of it and staff no where to be seen to ask for more. Pointed it out to the manager/chef and was told ploughmans always comes with grated cheddar ( a lie as I double checked with the person who recommended it and they said they had a nice lump of mature cheddar on theirs, and to be fair who serves grated cheddar with a ploughmans?) So not impressed with being fobbed off or lied to.My partner had sausage, egg and chips. One egg, 3 very tiny very cheap sausages which had obviously been cooked early in the day if not yesterday as were solid in places. Chef /manager later admitted they were cooked early that morning (we ate at 2pm) still think they looked like yesterdays sausages though. They looked lost on the huge plate they were served on as the chips and beans arrived in separate little fancy pots (why?)Also ordered a slice of bread and butter which was dried out and not the least bit fresh. Had to ask for salt and pepper and condiments and they arrived at some point after we'd got our food. The manager not once apologised, and actually got a bit aggressive when we pointed these things out and essentially called us a liar. Needless to say we won't be going back. Not to the cafe or the garden centre, based purely on the attitude of the manager and waitress.

The covid-19 safety measures in place are good. Nice to sit outside and all kept very clean. The breakfast food was OK if a bit stingy on content. Huge bap with just two sausages in the centre for example. Service was OK if a bit cheerless and took an age to come. The menu is not as per their website.The tea is horrible! Why do cafe's have to use the cheapest teabags available? We put two Yorkshire Gold into the pot to 'help out' but even with those in a pot for two the over riding taste was of the cheap and nasty tea bags. Yuk! Don't forget to ask for your hot drinks to come with the food if you want to drink and eat at the same time or else your drinks will likely get cold.

Lovely lunch, staff excellent, food very good. Tables outside spaced well apart. All precautions taken. Will be back again

I have visited Simpson’s coffee shop many times, and always had reasonable coffee, and nice cake. However we thought we’d have brunch here a couple of weeks ago - it was awful!The omelette I was served was a true abomination, solid due to being totally over cooked, grey in colour, and first mouthful contained eggshell. It was plonked down in front of me by a waitress who then failed to return to check if things were ok despite the food being left uneaten as it was inedible. Maybe the situation could have been rectified but no one cared enough to find out.They took the cost of the meal off the bill at the till, but still our experience was spoilt. Will not return for food. A coffee maybe.

This cafe is a nicely laid out with friendly staff and an extensive menu of the traditional options with the tastiest ingredients.

Ordered latte and a ginger cake, waitress came out with a latte and a ginger latte, and when I said we ordered ginger cake was told we don’t have any,,, also ordered a bacon bap and kippers was told it would be a 20 minute wait, which actually took 40 minutes despite not being overly busy again,, but the food was very nice once it arrived, maybe a little bit more organisation would help as another place a few miles away is packed but never wait more than 10 mins

We were feeling very battered having battled our way through the A14 roadworks and were looking for a quiet haven for a bite of lunch, and we found it here!You wouldn't perhaps visit here for the décor, but you would certainly go for the food!We had a couple of lovely filled baguettes, which were served with salad and crisps, shared a portion of chips and with two soft drinks the bill came to £15.00 which we thought was very reasonable.The staff were friendly and most obliging, and we finally continued on our journey refreshed and very full!!

We were searching for a pub at lunchtime but it was nearly 2pm (most pubs stop serving at this time!) Saw a sign for Slmpsons Nurseries and Coffee Shop so took a chance. Entering the carpark we were a bit dubious but once in the garden centre we spotted some sunshades. Sat outside and had a good lunch. Mediteranean Vegetable Stack came with boiled new potatoes and side a salad. (Separate pats of butter). Pleasant atmosphere and most people seemed to be regulars. We also had a sausage baguette, with side salad and crisps, pot of tea and soft drink -all for the bargain price of £16.75. Well worth a visit.

Had a hearty breakfast here in the sunshine, great value and nice setting too, gets busy but plenty of tables inside and out.

The approach road is not particularity enticing, as on the day we visited it was hot and following another vehicle ensured there was a cloud of dust in front of us. However, it was well worth the visit. A lovely coffee shop with lots of attractive options to eat and we opted for a pot of tea for two and a cheese scone each. Very pleased with the quality and cost

Tremendous selection of plants and flowers and an excellent coffee shop selling a variety of food in superb portions. Very friendly and helpful staff with nothing too much trouble.

We were met and a good table was suggested to us. Our order was taken quickly and we got our drinks but the food was a very long time arriving. The food was tasty but quite ordinary. It would have been nice to have a dessert which wasn’t cake even though they looked delicious

This isnt the cheapest of places and can be very busy at times which can lead to a long wait, however we keep going back which speaks for itself

Came for some plants but decided breakfast first.

We came all the way from Croydon to buy plants which speaks for itself. On a previous occasion we'd had to sit in the area by the counter and came away with our clothes stinking of frying. The smell was very noticeable when it came to pay but fortunately we were able to sit in the dining area which is fine.

We visited on our way home having found this on Trip Advisor. Home made cheese scones were served warm and delicious, fresh Bakewell tart and the most delicious pecan pie. Really moist. Hot food looked good also.

Had a lovely time here. Friendly smiling staff. A well presented menu with some delicious cakes and shortbread biscuits. Coffee and Tea was enjoyable and well made. Could not fault this restaurant and will definately go back sooner rather than later. I would recommend.

After shopping at the nursery, my friend and I had lunch. I chose the Cajun chicken with salad served with fries : it was really really tasty.... lovely chicken breast, no fat, no skin, no gristle and perfectly spiced.

We arrived here yesterday and upon opening the door it smelt of grease and oil which was horrible. We walked though to the other room which didn’t smell so bad.

A lovely place to go for tea and cake or a full meal. Today's visit we had lunch and were not disappointed. Both choosing to eat off the specials , we had steak and a homemade pie. Presentation of food is restaurant worthy and always tastes fresh and of high quality.The staff are very helpful and friendly and they now offer table service which was fast and efficient. This place is a hidden treasure. PS: puddings are lovely :)

We usually go to the cafe after visiting the nursery. There is a good variety for lunch or a snack. The service is good and quick. There is a surprising amount of room to eat and a sheltered coutyard in the better weather

MY wife and I had a three course Christmas Lunch today and it was first class. The food,service and friendly staff made it a most enjoyable occasion.Good value for money. If you have not been yet-book a table now!

Have been here twice now and both times really enjoyed it , the children had pizza & chips and nuggets & chips which were presented very well, they also do any of the other meals child size which is fantastic. We and the quiche and chips which we both really enjoyed it was a slice of quiche which we find better as then you don’t have a crust all the way round . The desserts looked tasty and reasonably priced but we didn’t have one. Highly recommend and we will be back.

Lovely experience with good food, friendly staff and a warm atmosphere. Been on a number of calls casinos sometimes just for coffee and cake and others times for a meal, on every occasion it was excellant.

Really enjoyed our first visit to Simpsons which we visited on the way home from holiday avoiding A14 and M11 chaoe. Excellent choice of dishes at good value prices. Sea Bass Special (New Pots and Salad)/Steak and Ale Pie New Pots and Veg. Two large Cappuccinos all for £23.00. Didnt unforunately have room for cake but looked really nice. Staff friendly and cheerful.

The Specials board for lunch offered Sirloin steak and chips at a very reasonable price.

We have visited Simpson's Coffee Shop a few times now and can't complain. Staff are friendly, menu choice is great and the food has always been served hot and tasty. This time it was a too hot, too sunny lunchtime and it was refreshingly cool indoors. Tables aren't squashed together, giving a relaxing, pleasant atmosphere.

We ordered a hearty breakfast and a vegetarian breakfast at 9am. First we had someone else's order plonked down on our table and when we pointed out the that it wasn't ours it was taken away but the dry looking toast remained. We pointed this out and it too was removed. A few minutes later our correct order arrived. Everything was just badly cooked. Broken, hard fried eggs, bacon burnt and dry, a pot of barely warm baked beans, an undercooked and unseasoned flat mushroom, flabby sausages. Oh, and of course that plate of toast made it's way back onto our table. We use the garden centre a lot but won't be bothering with food from the cafe again.

Only 12.15 when we ordered 2 broccoli and cheese bakes plus salad. Were told only 2 left. Should have been suspicious. I nearly called ambulance in the middle of the night because of severe stomach pains. Friend suffered similar but not quite as bad as me. We have decided that the two portions must have been left over from the day before. Won't be eating there again. Be warned if something is no longer on the daily specials board.

Sometimes busy but the food so far has always been good. Worth a trip even just for coffee and cake.

Just found this Nursery and decided to stop for a coffee and toasted tea cake. They gave us the coffee for free because their machine broke down! The coffee, which was instant, was very tasty! The cashier was very helpful and gave me the name of the coffee because I said it tasted good and she even wrote it down. Very good customer service! The toasted tea cake was yummy and my husband enjoyed his Earl Grey tea too. Next time we'll try lunch there, the food coming out looked very good.

Hadn’t been here before so rang to ask if I needed to book a table.....was told no you don’t but I booked anyway...

we went for lunch arriving t the counter for ordering at 12.15pm it was 12.40pm before we sat down! we both ordered paninis which took a further long wait to arrive. They came with a small salad garnish that was not dressed and there was no French dressing available - just salad cream! The paninis were clearly stale and so rock hard I hurt my wrist trying to cut mine. Mine was supposed to contain smoked chicken and red onion chutney there seemed to be precious little of either and at a cost of £6.50 was very poor value. They are excellent for plants at Simpsons and that's all I shall be buying there in the future .

Spur of the moment Sunday Lunch, lovely roast dinner, good value for money. Afterwards spent time browsing their wonderful displaay of plants and getting inspiration for the garden.

My wife and I regularly visit Simpsons and enjoy both the excellent food in the coffee shop and the great range of plants.You can have a snack or a meal and the food is always great and the whole place very clean.Staff are very helpful and prices are quite reasonable.There is always a vast range of plants available which are good quality and again have reasonable prices.There are garden centres nearer to us but we prefer to go where we know we are welcome

I love this nursery and always find what I'm looking for - worth the drive from Bury St Edmunds. The staff are great and coffee shop excellent.

Cafes and restaurants in garden centres can often be a let-down. We visited expecting a tired pannini or a hot lunch full of salt and fat.

It was nice to visit a independent Nursery. The plants were of all varied types and sizes all look healthy the prices are reasonable too. The coffee shop has a good selection of cakes and food on offer. You fell like you are in a family run place. Don't be put of by first impressions as you pull in from the road worth the visit.

Two of us choose all day breakfast, which was so let down with the bacon, it was so dry like a peice of cardboard - ( I think had been cooked in the oven first thing in the morning)impossible to cut had to eat with fingers , both decided to leave bacon, was a great shame as the sausages were really tasty and could not fault any thing else big tasty field mushroom. Scampi was enjoyed but certainly a bit short with the chips, considering its in the potato growing area the cheapest thing you can buy. The young staff were very polite and the cafe appears to be very clean. Several people were having a meal,there is also seating out side. Will visit again and try something else.

We used to come here regularly and can't remember why we stopped coming, but after today I think that's us done! We both ordered a ploughman's as from what we can remember they were lovely, today not unfortunately the long not so soft roll that came with the Ploughman's was stale, which was quite a surprise being a Saturday, I did complain and the lovely waitress took it back and replaced it with another roll which they had popped in microwave for a couple of seconds to freshen it up! After a couple of minutes it went dry still,having the stale taste. Good try hey... For a Saturday it wast that busy I think it's gone down hill and I'm sorry for that....... Needless to say that's our last visit.

I and my friend have visited this fine garden centre several times and have often finished up in the Coffee Shop. Good and fresh quiches, salads and home made cakes are always at the top of my list for a nice lunch. The staff are very friendly and the whole establishment is well run. Last Saturday I was visiting my friend in Ely and we decided to pop into Simpson's for lunch. This time we both ordered the Sausages & Mash. The mash was beautifully smooth, the three really flavourful sausages were obviously locally made and the light but tasty gravy made it an absolute delight. Best I have ever tasted. Well done Simpsons and thank you and your team for making a regular call into a special event.

We have been regulars at the coffee shop for ages and have always enjoyed the food. I have coffee and fruit scone which is always delicious. My husband's choice is always a bacon baguette and it has always been the best he has had until recently when the fresh crusty baguette was suddenly changed to a soft long roll. It is not the same so we beg you bring back the crusty baguettes please.
