Silver Grill in South Hams

Went in at 5 o'clock and got fish and chips. Both the fish and the chips were soggy. It was obviously what was left from the lunchtime opening. Pretty disappointing as the girl took £9.80 off me knowing it was old rubbish that had been left in the warmer.

Fantastic first visit. Clean inside, very fast service , lots of fresh fish. The fish was very nice, no skin or bones. Would visit again if I was in the area. Well done 👍🏻

Been using this plaice !! For years, and never disappointed, the food has always been of a very high standard. A family run business, even the Boss helps out , a rare thing these days.

Worst, soggy chips and the Cod was dry, over cooked and tasteless. You'd think that after 100's of years the English would have perfected chips!

Good fish, batter could be lighter!

Updating my review, as the owner offered to cook us a new haddock lightly battered and it was absolutely excellent! The chips are amazing and so are the mushy peas. I’d recommend going for a light batter, it results in very delicate flakey fish. Will be back more often now, thank you.

I first used this Chip Shop over 40 years ago, whilst on holiday in Devon. I visited again last night just before closing as I was by passing through. What an absolute treat, just as I remembered. Beautiful Fish & Chips. Really impressed that so close to closing they made them fresh up. The two girls working behind the counter were charmingly polite and professional. The Cod was thick and delicious. I will be planning more trips in this direction just for the Fish & Chips.

Good food, fast service, eventhough it was quite busy when I went. Must say, if they have the Hullumi fries on offer, take it. As they're delicious!

PARTY CATERING ORDER PERFECTLY FULFILLED, We asked the the SILVER GRILL to cater for our river cruise on the Dart. I thought there would be around 70 passengers, I asked the manager to deliver to the boat at the Steamer Quay as we had only half an hour at Totnes due to the tides that day. From my first “Messenger” contact with the manager, there was a willingness to meet our unusual request. Communications were easy and friendly. In the end, Marcus provided 79 portions of fish and Chips meeting also the needs of my Gluten sensitive and Vegitarian passengers plus some who asked for extras from his extensive menu. Going back there was a a sea of smiling faces and remarks such as “How did they keep them so hot?”, “Best Chips ever” “Scrumptious”, even a poem that contained the line: ”We went to Totnes , Ate Fish and Chips, We all got our orders - without any blips” There was not one complaint or missing item!

This was the best chippy in Totnes & now it is the only one. It is situated at the bottom of town, in a lane next to the "Seven Stars" hotel. It's a family owned / run business & has consistently produced great quality food for decades. The best thing (in my opinion) that they make are their fishcakes. Not the usual small, thin offerings but large beauties, made using their grandmother's recipe. There are indoor & outdoor seating areas plus the take-away option. The staff (who are father & his sons) are always friendly & great cooks.

Stunning fish and chips myself and my friend bought are dinner here today (19thmay 2023) sat by the river .would recommend here to everyone ,staff really friendly.

We (2 man and 2 women from Holland) have had a good advice from 2 wellmannerd boys. Laughing. Because one of us did not want the vinegar. So we have got the opportunity to taste. 4 x fish and chips we ordered. Thank you. For hospitality and kindness.

I have been going to the silver grill since I was a kid .... it always serves amazing food and always has very reasonable prices ..

They are either "gone fishing" or selling fish. I highly recommend the fishcakes. One of those a week makes my taste buds tingle. Excellent old local shop btw.

I've been having fish and chips from here since i was a teenager. Despite it not being that local to me now, its still well worth popping in to get some when i'm in town. They're still as good now as they always have been. Lovely chips, amazing batter and gorgeous fish. Highly recommended. 🙂👍

So I was passing through Totnes and google search for a fish and chip shop. I came across this one and reading the reviews I decided to call in. I only ordered 2 medium chips and a curry sauce to takeaway so my review is only based on the chips. They was very fluffy inside and a little too fluffy as I couldn't eat them with a folk. Soon and you press Into one to pick it up, it began to break up and fall off the folk!. Eventually i persevered and ate them but not sure why all the fuss and the hype of its quality. Maybe it's due to the lack of competition I guess.

Phoned for an order of cod and chips. Got there a few minutes early and my meal was cooking. Only had a two minute wait. Very good meal. Superb mushy peas.

Visited Totnes on Tuesday 21/06/22. Bought a large cod & chips for myself, and sausage & chips for my daughter, with 2 curry sauces. I’ve eaten at most of the best rated chippies across Devon and can honestly say this was the best I’ve had in a long time. Beautiful, fresh fish with a nice crispy batter and lovely home made chips. The curry sauce was spot on. Fast service too. Thank you

Do you remember what a good old fashioned fish cake tastes like ? The homemade ones from here are in my opinion the best EVER. It would probably surprise anyone to 'rave' about a fish cake. Great honest ingredients with a crumb outside with just the hint of pepperyness. And friendly staff too. Thanks to all of you. 👍

Decent local chippy, the chips are better than the fish. My only suggestion is they use a different wrapping on the chips as every time I get it home the paper is so thin it is stuck to the chips and I have to use a knife to cut the side off some chips.

The food was lovely but be warned the portions are huge. We ordered a small fish and chips and a medium one and we both could of shared the small portion.

Proberly the worst fish and chips my Family and I have ever had. Went in around 5ish today, got 2 cods and 2 haddock. All fish tough and batter soggy. The Girl serving us said they only had standard fish left. I believe they wanted to get rid of these before they cooked fresh. The chips were disgusting, soggy, not cooked and all stuck together like glue. We're on holiday and go home in the morning. We come to the area a lot and when I return I will go in there and tell them what I think. I will not recommend them and certainly not use them either. Others please stay away. Jay. SUSSEX

Burger was just a reheated Patty in a stale old bun with some Mayo on it. Chips were stale and soggy and the fish was dry and old. Would not have again.

We were staying in the Seven Stars Hotel and decided to buy from here. The food was fresh and looked good. The fish was very nice, chips tasty and the best chicken and mushroom pie I have had in a long time. The owner was very chatty, helpful and friendly. Prices are reasonable especially for this area. I would definitely recommend the Silver Grill.

Excellent chip shop - generous portion sizes and fish cooked just how we like it. Reasonable prices for down here in the South West. Just a quick walk from the Caravan club site. Will certainly come back

A group of us after a few afternoon beers walked into the Silver Grill on the back of googling "fish n chips Totnes" at random as not local to the area. Was hugely impressed with the efficiency, friendly staff and high quality of the food. Highly recommended. Will be returning again if in the area.

Excellent in every aspect. Deserves all the good reviews. Potatoes are fresh and not out-of-the-bag frozen chips and fish delicious. Everything looked clean and staff were helpful and cheerful. They granted my request for longer cooked chips to help with my delicate tummy even though they were very busy. Full marks to them and highly recommend.
