Our room was extremely disappointing. The mattress and sheets were damp. The mattress felt like it had not been changed in decades. There was no TV in the room and we were expected to use a shared shower and toilet that would not have been out of place in an 18th century asylum. We decided not to stay and returned to the front desk for a refund. The receptionist was clearly used to complaints and had a ready made scripted response that was effectively tough luck. She was very rude. While we were trying to get a refund another employee of the hotel was behind the receptionist who agreed that our complaints were justified while laughing at us. All of this cost around £90 and we were refused any refund at all. Not only should you not stay at this hotel, but the local health and safety inspector should pay a visit. Our room was not suitable for human occupation. I am disgusted in the hotel and it’s staff.

This was my third visit. On the positives, the room was clean, breakfast was superb, staff are friendly, but sadly the room I was allocated on this occasion needed some attention. Negatively, the wallpaper was peeling of torn, there was a huge watermark on the ceiling from previous damp, and the window frames were black from dirt and/ or damp. I was told that this was the most popular room and I agree that given the view of the garden and of the sea in the distance, this would be the case. Sadly the view inside the room is very different. Hax I been staying longer than ghd few days I was there, I would have requested a change of room. A little tlc required, especially since I would have been paying the same as those with better decorated rooms. Not sure I would wish to return, but sho knows, I might

Delightful old hotel tucked away from the road but only a short walk from the seafront. Extremely friendly and helpful staff. Rooms are well appointed if not 'posh'. Catered very well for our large group of musicians. Breakfasts good: dinners serviceable. They cater for both groups and individuals/couples/families but I didn't see any packages offered without evening meal (correct me if I'm wrong) which would discourage those seeking to explore the culinary hot-spots of Sidmouth by night. Overall excellent value for money!

Excellent service and lovely friendly staff who are welcoming and happy to help. We also had the buffet breakfast which was very tasty and they supplied vegan sausages on request which was very thoughtful of them. The main building looks really nice and its a good location right next to the sea and the swimming pool looked nice too. Now for the reason I have given only three starts was for the accommodation itself. I don't believe these rooms have been updated since the 60's. Original wallpaper that had been painted over and horrible very old fashioned radios that didn't even work. We had no tv or toilet and had to go to any building if we wanted to watch tv. Another thing was the hygiene. I don't believe anyone had ever bought a hoover into that building, there were big dark stains on the old carpet floor and dirt under the lamps. I the shared bathroom there was also lots of dust and when I moved the tissue box by accident there were sticky stains under there too. If this hotel had a refurbish and was cleaned properly it could easily become a five star hotel.

Been on several occasions early 2000s but visited more recently and was very disappointed.......i don't know whether it's been taken over by a new set up but the house cleaning staf2f where very distant and cold vteu reluctant to anolage you or say good morning or even show very basic certosy to paying guests the MANAGER seemed more interested in the glamour side of running that type of bissines than the basic and I reported a problem twice and nothing was done or anolaged and not as good value for money a stay now as it was before .....? Some of the staff where more interested in talking to and consulting with their boyfriend than Sorting things out in the evening.....!

It is a really beautiful and old building, there is a lot to see. The price cheep, rooms are nice and clean, equipment and furnitures are old, but perfectly working. You might get a room in the annex, which cheaper, but there is no WiFi connection. Breakfast included in the price, which was really delicious. There is a ballroom with a spectacular organ and crystal chandeliers. Swimming pool, table tennis, puzzle, etc. Coffee shop with tables in the garden. Quirky old hotel that has an interesting history. Our room was in the main house and was comfortable and clean and a good size. With great views of the mature garden. Much of the old internal decor was tired and dated but had character. This didn't spoil our stay and the breakfast spread in the morning was plentiful. Friendly and helpful staff. Music room is breathtaking with huge chandeliers. Swimming pool is good. If offered rooms in the annex you could be dissatisfied.

You could easily pay so much more to stay amidst such grandeur. Great for individuals, couples, families, business people, groups and conferences. Our room was located on the top floor and thus the WiFi did not reach us at all and the water took minutes to get warm. Low pressure from the shower. The room and hotel would also benefit from some renovations as it looked quite old and worn in some places. Thin doors made people in the corridor quite loud and there was a lot of children staying at the hotel when we where there... It was also a bit expensive (although we booked quite late so it might have been our fault...) and breakfast was quite OK. However, the very friendly staff and the free to use indoor pool makes this hotel worth their four stars.

Sidholme is a hotel run by Christian Guild. It is a large house, with a very impressive music room, complete with a pipe organ! The guest rooms vary in facilities depending on what grade you book. In common with many older, larger hotels, the room I stayed was in need of a little sprucing up, but was clean and comfortable. It had a good en suite bathroom, TV and coffee making facilities. The bed was comfortable, and there was plenty of storage space. The hotel grounds are well kept and nice to walk in. The indoor pool is a modern building at the top of the garden. It is a level walk to the sea of about 800M. The breakfast is a help yourself buffet, with a good range of hot and cold dishes. The dinner is generally fairly straightforward UK cuisine, but good portions and well cooked. The hotel often runs Church conferences at the weekend, but don't let this put you off. You will be welcomed if you are of any faith, or non. They also run a lot of special weeks during the year. My stay was for a 5 night heritage break. This was led by a blue badge guide, and was really good. The group size was 18 people and included all transport and entry costs. For what you get for your money, it represents very good value. See the hotels own website for details.

We have just had a lovely weekend in Sidmouth, and booked the Sidholme as it was reasonably priced and Sidmoth town centre was a 5 minute drive away. The hotel is dated and a bit tired, it could do with a luck of paint and attention to the externals, but was welcoming, our room was clean and tidy with a modern bathroom ensuite. I did find the heat in our room a little oppressive and resorted to opening windows, as I could not turn off the radiators. The hotel pool is lovely and set in the grounds of the hotel, away from the main house, it was heated and not busy so as I was travelling with children it was good for them to have a splash about and not annoy anyone. Breakfast was really nice with a choice of full English, continental and porridge. The only slight frustration was the speed at which the waiting staff wanted to clear the plates, with no discussion beforehand, just swooped in and boom, plate was gone ... I don't like that especially if other people in your party are still eating!! There is an 11.30pm curfew, so if you are going to be later than this a £5 deposit is required for the night key. The grounds of the hotel are lovely with good views. I would definitely book again.

Great venue for lunch, always busy, good food at reasonable prices. Until today, prices have risen, the place was half empty, the food still good but not exceptional so why the price hike? My breaded plaice with chips, peas and tartare sauce was £16.99! It was nice enough, not outstanding and available elsewhere in Sidmouth for a lot less. If they want more profit and less customers I think this approach will work, we will think twice before returning as there are many other places to eat locally that offer better value for similar food.

We enjoyed our night at this well run, clean and friendly hotel. The three course evening meal was freshly prepared and delicious. Our room was spotless and well presented. We both are surprised this is only a two star rated hotel, as our experience exceeded many four stars we’ve stayed in. Our breakfast was again delicious. The staff are all attentive and couldn’t do enough for us. It has ample parking and a beautiful rear garden with seating. If we are in the region again, we would wholeheartedly head for The Tumbling Weir, Thank~you
