¡No te vayas!

This is a small but very worthwhile restaurant in South Kensington. Food was great, service was quick and staff accommodating. I would definitely Coe here again!

Ive eaten here before and the food was ok however the food on this visit was very disappointing. It was tasteless and bland and not the standard I would have expected. I should have known something wasnt right when the popadums were served to us on a dirty tray. The tray had remains of someone elses popadums and old chunks of onion. When I point this out all I received from the waiters was a "oh". The was no apology or anything. There is currently an offer on of "first round of drinks free when spending over £10. Only when you get the bill this offer is not what it seems. Only certain drinks are included but this is not stated anywhere. False advertising I believe. After this experience I wont be going back and certainly wouldnt recommend this restaurant.

I was staying at the Millenium Gloucester in business and just wanted a good value, Indian restaurant. Shikara fitted the bill perfectly. Within walking distance and good quality, reasonably priced, Indian Cuisine, in the heart of South Kensington. Definitely worth a visit.

I went to this establishment recently. I know my Indian food very well and I can assure you that this is definitely not indian food, or even Bangladeshi food. Firstly, I found it suspect that neither the outside of the restaurant nor the interior has any smell of Indian food. This may sound odd for someone to read, but this to me proves that the food is pre cooked and then heated up and served. A bit worrying. I also like to refer to the Food Standards Agency website before I visit a restaurant to check out the hygiene rating. Note that Shikara is not registered for a hygiene rating. At the time of doing this review, no entry for Shikara comes up in the Food Standards Agency website, which means the restaurant has not registered - a real worry. The staff are however very accommodating and friendly, so I'd disagree with the other reviews on service /staff. The interior is clean and modern. The food? Awful. The curries are extremely bland with no spices. It is as though they've been covered with a tomato sauce and nothing else. The tandoori grilled meats are marginally better, but I suppose you couldn't really go wrong with grilled meats. The fact that we got offered a drink on the house is a lovely touch. However, I'd suggest that the owners of this restaurant truly consider changing the chef to one that makes authentic Indian food. If the food improved here, I am confident that the restaurant ratings would shoot up, but I'd also advise the owners to obtain a Food Safety Agency hygiene license. Without this, it seriously risks losing credibility as a food establishment.

A small side street restaurant. Clean and well laid out. Pleasant staff to greet you and good service even though we were touted off the street. Extensive menu well explained. Order to service time was minimal. Given first drinks free when the bill came. Surprised. My partner was not happy with her choice as very bland. My garlic murg was good. Would not rush to go back.

Food is of poor quality and utterly tasteless. Avoid and don't waste your money here. Bindi was bland, Dal tasted of ghee and nothing else, spinach was gross- no spices, aubergines was under seasoned. Chapati was soggy as they put it in a plastic bag. Don't waste your money here like I did! I wish I check trip advisor before impulsively ordering!

Friday night - delivery ordered at 8:10pm, arrived at 9:40pm Ordered Prawn, got cheap shrimps, the curry was liquid, absolutely no taste. Ordered chicken as well, no taste, looked really cheap. Potato poorly cooked. Worst ever Indian I have ever had. We ringed backed to advise that way they will loose all customer, they were very apologetic, hopefully they will try to improve timing, quality, and deliver Prawn and not super cheap shrimps.

My partner and I ate here on Friday evening and disappointed with the food was an understatement!!! My partner had a prawn Biryani which wasn't all rice it had been mixed with something similar to cous cous which I know isn't part of the dish and it had absoulutly no flavour either!! I ordered a chicken Rogan Josh (which I've had many times in various resturants)which is the worst I've ever had! It had no flavour, no and clearly a tin of tomatoes poured over it. The decor was nice and clean but very claustrophobic once other diners arrived. Was very overpriced!

Oh my god! Where do I start from, ordered food for home delivery and it was awful. Butter chicken- was absolutely tasteless, basically chicken in a tomato puree kind of sauce. No flavor at all! Order a side of raita-yogurt- it was old for days and there was a layer of this off white ferment. I was highly disappointed. Chicken biryani- very dry. I would never order from here again! I think there are many more places worth ordering from.

I've been here once and carried out from this place once. I had the chicken tikka masala. While the sauce looked a bit different than I'm used to (it's more red than orange), it tasted great. The Naan isn't the best I've had, but is still good. For South Kens, where everything seems to cost an arm and a leg, this place is a great value. The staff is friendly and attentive.

Restaurant was cold when we arrived. We ordered Cola and when served it was flat no fizz and too much ice. Ordered two lamb dishes and one chicken dish with rice. After a long delay three chicken dishes arrived. When the mistake in the order was pointed out there was no real surprise or apology but they did cook the lamb dishes, eventually. There was no discernable difference in taste between the dishes. Edible but very disappolnting. Waiters were not interested and borderline rude.A very disappoiting experience we would not go back.

Great looking restaurant located in busy South Kensington, the tables were nicely layed out with white table clothes and fine cutlery. The waiter was prompt and polite. And that is about where it ended. I ordered a simple dahl and Parantha, my wife went for the curry. Now I know some restaurant will "westernize" some of the meals for the local palate but this was rather bland. We did ask for the food to be spicy being seasoned travelers but it was not to be on this occasion. As there are so many restaurants to try in London, we did not return. Nice presentation but the food let it down.

South Kensington is often called the largest Indian city outside of the sub continent. It has many, many Indian eateries, and you can find Indian food all over London now, something quite different from when I first traveled there some 20 years ago. Shikara is a lovely, small place a short walk from the Gloucester Road train station. It specializes in North Indian food, though you will find many things you'll recognize like Naan breads and Dall vegetable dishes. I had Balti (a sort of stew in a tiny wok that originates in Kashmir), my daughter had a spicy Laal Moos lamb dish. The stuffed Naan was very nice. The wine list is basic (we ordered a Bordeaux for 20 quid that had a screw top), so I'd recommend the bottled beers instead, especially if your dishes are spicy.

As a regular reviewer and an addict of ''Anglo Indian Food'' I find this one of the best value and tasty curries around the area. If you want first class service, pay top dollar and end up not satisfied then this place is not for you. If on the other hand you want a good curry, served without airs and graces then you could do a lot worse than visit Shikara. I dislike the glass door that when it opens you receive a blast of cold air in winter and traffic fumes in the summer but that aside its worth a visit.

A group of 8 of us went here on a Saturday night expecting a delicious curry and were very disappointed. The King Prawn Karahi (which was £13) was flavourless and a very small portion with only about 4 prawns. The prawns were cold and tasted like they had been frozen. The Prawn Dupiaza was inedible and we asked for it to be taken off the bill because we could not eat it, the staff became very rude to us. None of the curries had any flavour and when we pointed this out we were simply ignored by the rude waiters. Horrible food and service and very over priced. avoid this place!!!

Four of us went to Shikara for dinner. From the moment we sat down we were aggressively pestered by more than one member of staff to start ordering, even before we were given menus. Eventually just to get some peace we asked for the mixed starters for four which arrived after a twenty minute wait. In the meantime while we were still choosing from the menu we were again pestered to order drinks, and water and wine. They got one of the drinks wrong and had to be returned. The wine was served and the waiter tried to fill the wine glasses to the brim and had to be firmly stopped, the same with the water. We chose the main courses from the Chef's Special menu. They took 30 minutes to arrive and then they were bland and tasteless. Again all during this time we were aggressively pestered to order more wine and drinks. The bill came to £130 without service, including one bottle of wine and four drinks, no dessert. It was only half full on a Saturday evening. Will never go there again. Avoid. There are much better Indian restaurants in the area.

We just arrived in London and wanted Indian food. Our apartment owner recommended this place, and the reviews here looked good. I am so glad we did! The place is very small, but has a very nice decor. We saw people in all different types of dress, so don't worry if you are, say, in jeans. The waitstaff was well dressed and very attentive the entire meal. We arrived at 18:30 and we were the only ones there. It began filling up around 19:00. The food was fresh, plentiful, and very good. Our family of four ate from three main dishes, a kabob appetizer, and papadum. The cost, with drinks was £ 60-- not bad at all for a nice dinner in London. We will definitely return!

Wanted to find an authentic indian without having to venture to Brick Lane, and we found it. So affordable, and really good quality. Perfect size portions. What a pleasant surprise, this little jewel in a city full of big name chefs and restaurants.looking for a lovely evening out with exquisitely delightful food in an intimate setting? Shikara is a find. The sliver of a setting holds maybe 24 seats, cozy, well attended. Service is spot on. We knew nothing about Indian food. The waiter /owner took time to explain every dish from this extensive menu.We started with an appetizer of simia Mirch, a whole pepper stuffed with lean lamb mince in spices. It was like an upscale, beautifully presented sloppy Joe. They recommended under the sundries menu, pappadom, which cost hardly anything yet was the highlight of the menu. Think of it as the chips and salsa. Thin chips with four salsas, a spicy pickled pepper, chutney mango, chopped onion and something else.... So good, could have been a meal in and of itself. For the main dish we had king prawn Balti sauted in onions and spices in balti sauce, served with a flat bread. Amazing. Laal Maas, hot diced lamb in raja Thani style masala with chopped onion, tomatoes, red chilies. Don't worry about not knowing what all this is and how to pronounce the dishes. They walked us through every step and were very polite even when we knocked the flower vase off the table and it shattered into shards of glass. Try something different. You will not be disappointed.

The Veg Biryani we ordered was not a biryani but a simple yellow rice -vegetable combo which can at best be describes as a pulao or Tehri as it is called in Eastern Uttar Pradesh in India. My hubby was terribly miffed and barely ate, although I found what ever they gave just palatable. The ambience and location is fine.Best part when we told the senior waiter that this is not Biryani he gladly agreed..strange!Not worth a visit there are better options!
