A group of 5 of us went on Saturday 28th October, to celebrate my Sister's hen night, and we weren't disappointed. Lovely tasty food, pleasant staff, quick arrival of food. Between us we had Kung Po Chicken, Stir fried Prawns with Broccoli, Braised beef noodle soup, Stir fried Beef Ho Fun with beans sprouts and Vegetable Chow Mein, and I have to say that every dish was amazing. Highly recommend this restaurant, for quality and price, my sister got a discount as she was the bride to be....what more can you ask for..... Will defiantly go again.

The overall taste for dishes of Shanshuijian restaurant is very good and authentic. We have visited there and ordered for delivery frequently. The dishes have never disappointed us. Our favorite dishes are Tofu with Pork Mince, Guo Bao Rou, Westlake Soup with Beef, etc. We are about to move from this area, so in the future it will be a pity that we cannot visit frequently. But it is definitely a restaurant that deserve to have dinner. Will travel to eat in.

Decent Szechuan food. GanBao Pork, Yuxiang Aubergine, FengWei sliced beef etc were all very nice. Not so pricey either so reasonable prices. Service average but ok. Stairs to toilet upstairs were dirty and sticky, bathrooms were clean enough. Will recommend to others

It doesn't look much from the outside, or inside, but this is the most flavoursome Chinese food I've had in London. The menu is huge and what's particularly lovely is how good the staff are at recommending things. I go in once a week saying 'I liked that, what now?' and always love what's recommended.

Comida deliciosa. Altamente recomendado.

This is good homemade cooking but as others have said over the past two years - the portions are absolutely too big. There is leftover food which some people will not want to pay for. They say the soup is a big portion e.g for two people. Then serve it in two bowls. Why not just price it per portion? I suggest that they make the prtions smaller and reduce the price for each portion.

This small establishment on a busy and somewhat insalubrious stretch of the commercial road is a real find. Do not be put off by the lack of exterior signage in English as all comers are welcome, and the staff are polite and helpful. The excellent menu offers a range of very good, hearty and tasty dishes, many of which come from China's north east, including a wide and varied range suitable for vegetarians. The succulent braised aubergine, and dry wok cauliflower and crunchy lotus root options are highly recommended. Not only is everything prepared with great professionalism, but the proportions are ample and the prices are incredibly low.

It was a Sunday and I had to get to the airport to catch my flight. Before leaving, a good Chinese meal was just what was needed. This place is small and seemingly out of the way. I hadn't noticed it the night before until after I'd had a pretty bad meal at a place I won't mention. So I went in and asked for a hot and sour soup and beef with noodles. The portions here are very generous. The soup was fantastic, just the right piquancy and a slight dash of sour at the end. The acidic balance was perfect. It went splendidly with my beef and noodles. The bowl of soup was abbundant enough for four or five. Next time I want to go with several friends and order up a storm to try out their other delicacies.

Quite possibly my favourite Chinese restaurant outside of China. In the UK we seem to get mainly Cantonese food, this restaurant (so they tell me) has the cuisine from the area close to Korea. Hence the Kimchee rice (which is stunning). The menu is diligently (and literally) translated from its original language. Because of the wide variety of dishes they have, those looking for a different experience can (I don't like tripe, but try their pork intestine and you will have it again), while others can go for more standard fayre (sweet and sour pork or salt and pepper squid). The prices match the portion size - which are generous. For a couple I would suggest 2 regular dishes and one rice or noodles (unless you want a doggie bag - which I usually do).

To say this 'restaurant' has an eclectic menu would be an understatement. Not many places with intestines and tripe on the menu...However though there are more mainstream dishes sprinkled there this is not your normal Chinese fare. The place is odd in that it's more like your local cafe that would serve a fry up. It's a no frills service at an okish price but nothing cosy about it and the staff are slightly disconcerting in the way they more or less stand next to your table and watch you eat....very strange.I don't really get the earlier reviews. It's charm was lost on me but if you can get over the rather ghoulish menu the food itself is passable.

You'd never guess, from the location, that this was a really good Chinese restaurant - way out of the ordinary. Inside you can tell because the staff are exceptionally welcoming and helpful and care about the choices you make and the food they serve. Listen to their advice and order the things the restaurant is best at, not standard dishes. The boiling lamb hotpot is a fine, warming, simple dish for a cold night down near the Thames. Worth a trip even if you don't live nearby. You will be back.

Authentic northern Chinese - spicy so quite different from the usual Cantonese fare. This is our local and we've been visiting twice a week for the last few months. Good honest food, well executed dishes in big portions. The staff are friendly and do try hard to please (unlike in Chinatown).Haven't yet had a single duff dish; we have our favourites (hot and sour soup, home style tofu, most of the pork dishes) but always pleasantly surprised when we try something new. Comes in within £20 for two with a couple of sharing dishes, a bowl of rice to share and a pot of tea and we leave stuffed. Decor is basic so not quite your first-date type of place but at the end of the day for a local with a high standard of cooking I really can't object. Hygiene-wise could do better but no worse than any of the establishments in Chinatown.Looking forward to our next visit, we're bringing a couple of our neighbours along next time as it's still a bit of an unknown gem in the area.

Staying at the nearby Holiday Inn Express I dropped in here looking for a quick meal. I hadn't booked but the restaurant wasn't too busy so got a table straight away. I ordered sweet and sour soup and Kung Po chicken with boiled rice. My first surprise was when the soup arrived. The waiter placed the stars sized bowl and spoon in front of me and the placed a huge bowl on the table that would have served at least six people easily. I managed to have three standard bowls before I had to give up on it, but the large bowl still didn't look as if I'd had any. Part of the reason I stopped after three was that my main course surprisingly arrived as I was finishing my first bowl of soup and was getting cold. Based on the number of Chinese people eating there, I assume that it's fairly authentic, but I can say that it was excellent. However the staff need to give customers a bit of warning about portion size, and they need to improve on the delivery timing, before a higher rating is justified.

I had the Sweet and Sour Fried Pork Dongbei Style with a portion of very tasty egg fried rice, and it was amazing! The platter came out piled with big slices of curled tender meat in batter, with an addictive sauce that also included fresh garlic and strips of ginger. It wasn't a fancy place but the food's lovely (so lovely in fact I returned the next time I was in London to have the same dish again!) and the portions very generous. The staff didn't speak a lot of English but did recommend trying their 'Farmer Fish' dish next time. The menu has a lot of authentic Chinese dishes with unusual ingredients, many of which I've never seen before in other places I've eaten. Every table has a hotplate in the middle, which was a bit odd (maybe I'm just not very worldly!) and mine wasn't used... maybe it's for sizzler dishes? The restaurant is next to the Limehouse DLR station, and was ideal for me as I was staying in a hotel around the corner.

I was staying in the area and wandered in here. When I arrived there were some oriental looking people dining here so I thought it would be good. My initial impression was that the place could do with a good clean, the hot plate in the middle of the table could certainly have benefited from a clean. I ordered a soft drink and it arrived in a can with a straw. Perhaps a glass would have been good! The food arrived at two different times, with the rice arriving a few mins after the meat dish. The fried rice was very good and nice and sticky, making eating it with chopsticks as easy an experience as I've had in a Chinese restaurant. The meat was very heavily spiced and tested my ability to eat hot food (and I like to think I'm pretty good at tolerating hot food). Overall I'm pleased to have eaten here, the food was different to most other Chinese I've eaten.

Second time at this restaurant and it just gets dirtier!First time we ordered innocently and were blown apart by the chilli heat of some dishes. This time we asked for the "lamb hot pot" menu ( which they don't seem to automatically offer to western diners)This is quite an experience.....you buy the basic hot pot of lamb neck on the bone in a rich fragrant dark broth, then buy as many sides as you like to make as "weirder" broth meal. We played reasonably safe with Chinese cabbage, udon noodles, chicken fillet and Chinese mushroom and beef ( maybe!!) meatballs which were inedibley rubbery. This pot simmers on a hot plate and you fish around and enjoy ( mostly)Service is pretty disinterested and unhelpful (standard Chinese in my experience) but the cleanliness of the place is truly appalling, everything is grimy beyond belief and the trip to the toilets is a journey into hell ( albeit upstairs....carpeted with grease encrusted carpet that must be a fire risk)The food makes the visit worthwhile, and if you were in china you wouldn't bat an eyelid. But this is 2014 in London and we have environmental health officers ( not enough in tower hamlets obviously!!)No "scores on the doors" sign on this restaurants' window, surprisingly

We tried to eat at Shanshuijian on a Friday night, but had not made a reservation. It was so full - all tables full (mostly with young Chinese people, speaking in Mandarin). There were people standing waiting for a table, and others waiting to collect take-away orders. One strange thing i noticed was that certain diners occasionally jumped up, cleared the plates from their table, headed to the kitchen and returned with more food! I can only presume that they were"friends and family" of the staff. We opted for take-away and we're very happy with our food. The fried pork was very crispy and tasty. The spicy prawns were huge, head and shell on, and in a delicious sauce with chilli and onions. Portions are large, generally enough for two people, and rice is also a very generous helping. We will certainly use them again for takeout, but I don't think eating in the bustling, formica tabled restaurant would be a very relaxing experience.
