My new favourite food place! Food and service was outstanding. The waitress went above and beyond explaining how to eat dimsum and the buns. Everything! I feel maybe this was the most authentic chinese restaurant i ve been to. One chinese person recommended to go there and i noticed all the customers (apart frol Us) were chinese families. I think it that does say a lot! Also, very good value for money

Now renamed The Imperial, this thankfully has the same family running it, and is still serving authentic and brilliant Cantonese food. Completely re-decorated (as it was previously a bit scruffy) the surroundings now match the food quality. As repeat customers we're working our way through the menu. This time we had dim sum, which was super (and excellent value for money)! If you want tasty authentic Chinese food served by people who put their heart and soul into it, and are committed to being part of the local economy come here. If you prefer homogeneous chain restaurants that come and go, go to one of those.

The worst place to eat. Crispy duck is Soggy duck, Chicken was not crispy in sweet and sour. Noodles were half hot and half cold in temperature. Do not bother to eat here. The waitresses was a liar as i told her many times about the quality of the food and she did nothing about it. When i spoke to the manager some young dude who spoke rudely to me so i spoke rudely back. I was appalled at there service and attitude here! please do not touch this place with a barge pole food is not fresh and they lie or make out they cant speak English the minute you try to complain. I paid £100 in here tonight for 4 people - honestly the worst £100 i have ever spent food is crap!

We had 1/2 crispy duck and pancakes to start which was OK. We had beef in black bean sauce which was fine but the rest of the meal was shocking. We had chicken chow mein with very little chicken and was cold like it had just come out of the fridge, we had to leave most of that. We ordered sweet and sour pork. It was large pieces of pork in batter, seemed hard like bone. We all could not eat it or cut it through, too big for a mouthful. Basically nothing like sweet and sour pork and again cold. No apology from the staff for the awful food. The place seemed empty compared with what it used to be. Perhaps they have changed the chef. We will not be visiting again.

If you're looking for great service, sauces as tasty as you get in Hong Kong (if you've been to HK you'll have eaten food with delicious sauces) and piping hot nicely cooked food served in very simple yet spotlessly clean surroundings, this is your place. This independent restaurant is authentic. No awful chain-restaurant gimmicks here. Instead you'll find hand-written posters in Cantonese on the walls, advertising proper Cantonese dishes (you'll see Chinese families and couples eating here). The huge menu has got every Cantonese dish covered (including those char sui pork buns and chickens' feet you'll have loved in Hong Kong). The service was perfect. The very friendly and helpful staff worked hard on cleanliness (thoroughly cleaning tables between diners, and wearing their face coverings). Also, the tables aren't too close together, so I reckon this restaurant is as Covid-safe as you can get). Now to the bill. If I told you we'd had three courses (soup, then mixed hors d'oeuvres, then a main course of special fried rice, sizzling beef in black bean sauce, mixed veg in garlic sauce, s&s chicken), soft drinks and tea for £20 each would you believe me? It's true, so we left a good tip. This is our new favourite restaurant.

We visited Shanghai Moon last night. Coming through the doors the decor was basic. Having been in fancy looking restaurants with disappointing results I reserved judgement and I'm pleased I did. No alcohol is served here but there is an off license next door so that is not a problem and reduces the overall cost of the evening. We all ordered starters and we were impressed when they arrived. The vegetarian spring rolls were crisp and delicious, the prawn toast was excellent and the dimsum were delicate, fragrant and made me regret ordering the prawn toast, delicious though it was. The servers were friendly and efficient. My mother wanted King Prawn in soy sauce. It was explained that it came with the shell on but no problem, he could take the shell off. She loved it. Some of us had curries, the curry was quite spicy, more so than some were used to with Chinese food but very nice. I had salt and chili squid which was fresh, delicate and very tasty. 6 of us were out, all of us were happy and will return next time we are in Leicester. I can't remember that happening before :-)

A group of friends regularly go here for dim sum on Sundays. When the restaurant first list its license the staff explained what had happened and pointed out the nearest off license. We have had no problems taking in our own alcohol and glasses have been readily supplied. I returned to Shanghai Moon for the first time in a couple of years to take someone who hadn't been before. We were greeted in a very warm and friendly way by a lady who remembered me from before. On previous visits I had always ordered dishes from what was called 'the traditional Chinese menu' that used to feature at the back of the normal menu. Upon noticing this was absent I asked if we could see it and was told that there was no such thing and so we were given the 'English menu'. We ordered Tofu in salt and chilli and Szechuan Aubergines with boiled rice. The tofu dish was nice enough with a nice crispy coating. The aubergines however were in a rather sweet and vinegary sauce with little to no spice. Certainly not reminiscent of authentic Sichuan dishes I have eaten elsewhere. We were further disappointed to see completely different Chinese menus being given out to Chinese customers and far more authentic and interesting dishes arriving at their tables. It is a shame if the restaurant has decided to stop printing the traditional menus in English because they see no point. I don't think I'm alone in wanting to taste authentic dishes that are regional and entirely different from the usual fair at the average takeaway. On the plus side the meal was incredibly cheap and service was good but I would rather be given the choice and am unlikely to go back. For more authentic, traditional and tastier food I would highly recommend Spicy Temptations on High Cross St.

My first meal at Shanghai Moon - I'm not from Leicester but seized the opportunity to share a meal with someone who has dined here many times. He said in advance "it looks a bit run down, and they can be a bit abrupt in there"... but actually his forewarning was unnecessary! The restaurant isn't snazzy or modern looking, The service wasn't great initially - we were seated quickly and given menus but no drinks order was taken for 10 minutes or more. We could have gone and asked for service, so it would be wrong to be overly critical of this. We ordered appetisers and three main dishes - including some my friend knew were available but weren't on the main menu. It seems there are a couple of menus - one main restaurant menu, and a dim sum menu. The waiters were happy to help satisfy his need for information about the food. Overall there was nothing over or underwhelming about the service. However, the food was delicious, the restaurant filled up with a mixture of people and there were take aways being collected - evidently other people were also enjoying it too. And I felt our bill was low for what we had. So... thumbs up Shanghai Moon!

I didn't dare send it back as I didn't know what I would get or how long I would wait so when I received my bill just paid and made a quick dash. I can't say this was a pleasurable experience was not even asked at any stage how my meal was. The waiter was more interested talking to a couple about his move to Hong Kong very professional sir.

We'd booked a table in advance for my birthday and on the day I needed to add another chair for a friend. So I called up and the lady who answered was quite abrupt and just shouted down the phone "too busy! Too busy" and hung up! I called again to make sure our table would be ok and she shouted again "too busy! Too busy! You don't call me again!" When we arrived the place was nearly empty! It still took her 10 mins to seat us. I knew it was her because she was quite rude as soon as we arrived. Whilst ordering our food, she kept rolling her eyes at people and shouting when she didn't understand which dish one of us wanted. Our starters arrived in reasonable time and the food was ok. However it was almost an hour later that we got our first main dish, which sat getting cold for another 10 mins before the other food started arriving in dribs and drabs over the course of 20mins. We were still waiting on 2 rices, one of which they'd forgotten and the other they'd mixed in with someone else's which they didn't tell us. We ended up having to ask them to remake some of the food which had gone cold by the time the rest arrived. In short, it was a disaster. When we finally managed to eat, the food was average. We also noticed while we were waiting that the woman that shouted at me was also shouting at the other waiters in the kitchen! I felt quite sorry for them because the other waiters were very polite and accommodating. My friend secretly asked one of the other waiters if he could order a small cake for me as a birthday treat and the WAITER said to him that we wouldn't want the cake from them, basically implying that it was either not nice or maybe unhygienic. When we got the bill, all the items on the list said "Chinese food" (photo attached). We don't know what we'd been charged for and it so much hassle to work out our split that we just couldn't be bothered in the end so just paid and left. None of us would ever go back!

Summary: Paid £80 + £8 service charge and my wife was shouted at. Used to be a regular customer but will never go again. I will try to make sure that anyone I know never goes there again. We went there yesterday evening (03/01/1990) for the birthday dinner of my Chinese wife. My wife called ahead to ask if she needs to book a table and if it is ok if we bring our own cake (since they don't do any cakes). When I asked her if she managed to call she said that the lady hung up the phone after saying "yes, yes, come, I'm busy". We go there and the restaurant is completely empty. We were the only table. Ordered and everything arrived fine. While we were eating the old lady and a young girl were folding napkins. By the time we finished our meal they were in the kitchen so we were completely alone in the restaurant. We had to shout for their attention and ordered two more beers. We also asked them to clear the table if possible so we could eat our birthday cake. They kindly provided a lighter to light the small candles we had but took away the cling film that was on the plate that we brought. When I got up to pay my wife asked if she could have one of those aluminium container things that they do delivery with. It is common that they give those to you to pack up your food if you can't finish it. While I was paying she started to shout at my wife across the restaurant in Chinese saying that "she was extremely busy and we were here with our special demands, etc." WE WERE THE ONLY TABLE! I have pictures. I noted that her behavior was out of line and that I was paying the 10% service charge on our bill of £80, (£8).They REFUSED to give us a copy of the bill. I am trying to find out if I can report them with some kind of trading standards agency because I am pretty sure there must be a law that they have to provide me with a bill if requested.Only when I got home I found out that I could also have refused to pay the service charge and could have reduced the bill if I felt like we were mistreated.Summary:Food was ok but my wife got shouted at. Will try to report to trading standards if applicable for refusing to provide a bill and possibly the police for verbal assault but not sure yet if that is applicable in this context. Either way, the old lady in there is extremely aggressive and I would encourage anyone to avoid this restaurant.PS: If you read this, I'm the Lotus guy.

My friend and I are loyal customers having eaten here many times in the last 2 years and never have we experienced such rudeness from a staff member. The one particular staff member was an older woman, compared to the younger staff, who is slightly overweight with crooked teeth (just so you know who we are talking about). Her nasty words to us were after our meal when we did not pay the service charge, usually we do but on this occasion couldn't. We halved the bill and she was confused by this with a frown. When I went to pay she realised it didn't include the service charge so when I told her we weren't paying it she slammed the card machine down to me and after handing my card back told us if we weren't paying the service charge to not come back again. Not only was she rude to us but also to an older Chinese gentleman whose chair had been sticking out slightly. She angrily told him to move in, it wasn't in English but you could plainly see what we was saying and with such rudeness. All this was one week after my parents visited, it was their first time going to this restaurant and they went at 10pm after a film, she came out to them, rudely told them the restaurant closes at 10.30pm and walked away leaving them standing there. We love the food at this restaurant and the staff are usually so nice, even once before we couldn't pay the service charge and they didn't make a fuss. I hate giving this place a bad review but this one rude woman has put us off coming back here. If you don't mind that, then definitely come for the food!

The food is delicious and varied, and the portions large. I found the staff very friendly, not in a pushy way but like they were genuinely pleased we had come to their restaurant. Oh and it is very good value.

This Chinese restaurant is very close to the Highcross Shopping Centre and is open lunchtimes as well as evenings. The large majority of diners were Chinese when we were there which is a good sign. The menu is extremely varied making a choice quite difficult! Staff were polite and helpful and the food was first class. Beware of leaving a tip as a service charge is included. Definitely a place to return to.

massive tasty portions at reasonable prices, only let down was after the food was served no one was around to top up drinks, we had to wait til they popped their heads out from behind the kichen door, shame..also didnt realise that service charge was included as left a tip so check bill first as over tipped...

Visited with a friend and we went for the banquet for two. Food was nice enough although I found the sweet and sour extremely sweet. Nothing special, but there was plenty of food and we felt we had enjoyed a pleasant evening. However on asking for the bill we saw that a service charge had been added. I assumed I must have missed this information on the menu so took the bill to the counter and commented that I had not expected there to be a service charge. He asked if I wanted to pay it. Was a bit confused at that, so I asked if it had been specified on the menu. He said all Chinese restaurants charge a service charge. Eeer really?I said I had never been charged a service charge in a Chinese restaurant and he replied that I had obviously never eaten in a proper one. They did remove the charge, and I have chosen to view his rudeness as funny, but it did end a pleasant evening on a sour note. Would not recommend.

What a gem. This is our favourite Chinese restaurant in Leicester. Their salt and pepper squid is the best we have ever had. They never disappoint!

After I've been told by a colleague that there was a 'pretty good Chinese restaurant in Leicester', he got me: I had to try it! I asked three colleagues to join and we were not disappointed at all! The food was really good, well prepared, not a long waiting time and the staff was friendly. The bill was not really high, so our boss will be happy as well ;)Nothing is certain in life, only the fact that I will be going here more often!!!

Food is fantastic especially the selection of Sichuan spice double fried pork or hot oil beef. Dimsum is freshest on weekends and by Thursday they had been out of things like egg tarts but when we returned on Sunday the egg tarts were worth it. Dumplings, soup, congee all had good sizes and good flavor

Ate here with a few friends. The interior is nice, a traditional non gentrified Chinese style restaurant. For the portion sizes, the prices are very reasonable. We got a starter but it was not necessary as I had enough left over from the main to have lunch the next day. The food was overall tasty and satisfying. Good options for vegetarians, and they can tweek some dishes to make it vegetarian if you request. Only gripe is they put a service charge on the bill, which I felt was a little sneaky. Whilst the service is fine, it's nothing special to warrant the extra charge. Will definitely be back. Unlike the modern Chinese style places that are popping up this place retains the traditional feel.

Have been visiting Shanghai Moon regularly since I moved to this city. It is definitely one of the best Chinese restaurants. Provides traditionally Hong Kong food.

Not that many sit down chi restaurant in Leicester i think. The env is all right, plenty of chinese customers. We had yangzhou fried rice £5, xo scallop prawns £10 which had lots of snow peas actu, garlic roast pork £5.50 which was rather sweet n too dry, chrysanthemum tea £1.50. Just nice for 2. But I'll skip the garlic roast pork next time.

I ate here with 5 friends for Dim Sum and the food was o.k.Lots of inconsistantsies though. Some dishes were nice but others very badly made. Also very small portions for the prices charged. It is big and has lots of space for big groups.I have no idea about the rest of the Menu as we didn't eat it, however the prices were very high.

The only time i visit is for the Dim Sum which is o.kNot the most consistent food but good look finding consistency in a UK Chinese restaurant. Some of the dim sum items are overpriced.I never eat the Chinglish food (sweet & sour, lemon chicken etc etc) and avoid the evening menu as it is highly over priced and not worth the money.Service is o.k

I've been here dozens of times but only on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon. We've always had excellent service and first class food. For flavour and overall taste it is in the top 3 of Chinese restaurants I've eaten in

Visited late on a Saturday night! Lovely atmosphere, very good food and good service. I would definitely recommend the beef chilli hot pot. Better than the buffet restaurants that surround this little gem!

We booked a table for 8 at the Shanghai Moon for my 60th Birthday. We have always had good food and service, but had not been for a long time. We were all there by 8.10. The food was good but the service was dreadful. We had only had 2 courses by 10.30, and we were the only people there. Instead of asking if we wanted deserts or coffee, they brought the bill and told us they were closing, and this was on a Friday night in December? The bill even had 10% service charge!! I refused to pay most of the service charge, and we left. I will not be returning

We have tried this restaurant in the evening and found it first class. We decided to go and eat at lunchtime and they gave to us the dim sum menu, but we know that they do a 3 course lunch deal for £7.99 or £6.99 for 2 courses, which is what we had. We started with the Pork spare ribs, which were to die for, plenty of them as well. My husband for main course had beef in black bean sauce and I had a chicken dish. You could have boiled or Pilau rice, or chow mein with it. Such excellent value for money and tasty, certainly no room for a sweet. You need to ask them for the special luncheon menu or you will just be offered the Dim Sum. Also for £1.50 per person they give you endless Chinese tea.

We were introduced to this restaurant today by a couple of new friends. I have been to China and can honestly say this place cooks up a real authentic Chinese cuisine proven by it's popularity with the oriental inhabitants of this city. It's not posh, it's not expensive and the food is just fantastic. Don't go at the weekend as it is very, very busy and would not be the best experience for you. If you are adventurous enough, trust them to provide you with a selection of dishes. The aubergine is very garlicky, the braised beef stew is unctuous, the duck is divine, Do try the pork with green beans it's just heaven! I can promise you Chinese food that you won't get from you little local takeaway.

A good selection of dim sum and lots of authentic dishes, my dad is from Hong Kong and it gets his seal of approval - can't ask for more than that! Try and get in early as some dishes can sell out. Inexpensive compared to a lot of places, whenever I've been we have tended to over order massively by accident (getting way more than we could possibly eat for cheaper than eating in another restaurant), but we are more than happy to take food home and eat it later!

We have been overseas a lot so we went back to see if this Chinese was as good as we found it to be last year - it was!Authentic food from a good selection of dishes from the Chinese menu. Dim sum and other dishes great and the service was good and slow just like in HK and China with slightly rough decor. Don't go if you want standard English/Chinese with MSG and the same tasting dishes with spices thrown in with no thought! This is Chinese, not European Chinese.

I Can hear the chef in the background constantly clearing his throat & SPITTING! It puts customers off edge and makes me paranoid! After already paying for my food I felt rude if I had already asked for it back! I DIDNT eat the egg friend rice because I thought it would have had spit mixed into it! The CARELESS SOUND OF SPITTING WHILE YOU ARE COOKING FOOD IS RUDE & OFF PUTTING! Have some respect for the people that are buying your food! I WONT BE GOING TO YOUR PLACE AGAIN! Rude

Dreadful! Never revieceved order and when rang to see where it was, they insisted that their driver had delivered it. There has been no delivery to my house. Checking ring doorbell footage shows noone has been. Still they insist it's been delivered even when I asked them what colour my door was and they gave the wrong colour. Apparently it's not their problem and they're not sending out food paid for as the driver says he delivered to the correct house. Bunch of liars! I wonder if they even cooked any food or it's just some scam they're running to pocket customers money... Got called a liar and son got told he didn't know his own address... Will never use again and will word of mouth advise people to avoid at all cost. ETA Shame on you! Yes eventually got refunded from just eats after multiple emails over a week after it happened. It's taken you nearly a month to respond to the review. Maybe if the person on the phone didn't accuse us of stealing the food and tried the fix the problem then I wouldn't have left a bad review or have to chase a refund through justeats. Your staff are rude and obnoxious and so are you.

We had ordered twice, we thought it was the food we ate at lunch but again we had ordered today, me and my partner both feel very sick after eating the fried dishes. We think it’s maybe due to their oil not being changed and cleaned because previously we ordered before an ordered the same food, but we gave it try again thinking it was just our lunch unfortunately it’s not. Also, the crispy food is awful hard and it’s cut soo tiny like baby bites. You can see in the photos, with us half eaten the portions but it’s just for references for those who are looking to order form here. The crispy won tons are a joke honestly it’s literally fried pancake there’s no stuffing, it’s sooo tiny it’s just wrapped in layers of the won ton wrap. The staff are nice but they really need to re-work on their food especially how ridiculous small the pieces are cut. Not only they really need to get the oil cleaned up because we’ve ordered from other Chinese before around Leicester and had no problems before but they honestly really need to have a food and safety hygiene checked.

Ordered Chopsuey but came without the noodles. I was told I would be provided a full refund. Took cash payment only so it would have to be refunded the next time I order. Tried ordering today and was told that I would be provided a £1 refund for the noodles. I told them how can a person eat a meal if part of it is missing. He said you can make your own rice ! I don't usually leave reviews but this has incensed me ! Ruined my dinner last week and then made me look stupid asking for a refund today !! Just don't offer a refund next time.
