Had a hotpot with my friend, perfect food, few drinks would highly recommend if you’re looking for an authentic Chinese meal.

Mixed starter was well done bordering on the side of burnt. Crispy noodles house special had no flavour and was served with under cooked chicken. Decor was drab and untidy as well as Unhygienic toilets . Crispy Pan Fried Dim Sun was good though. Won’t be back.

5 stars for the girl on the phone tonight. She was new, and we put in a very difficult order with various dishes that weren't even on the menu, but she was very helpful and friendly. She even requested certain dishes especially from the chef! Thank you!

We went to this restaurant on the spur of the moment - and it was wonderful. The fact that several customers were Asian, and the menu's being in Chinese, were good signs. We ordered our usual favourites, but next time we shall be more adventurous. The food is fresh, tasty and cooked with a light touch. Best rice I've ever had! Service is good, very helpful, even if English is not the first language. Definitely recommended.

This is now a SiChuan restaurant. When I arrived there were only Asians eating in this restaurant. I took this to mean that the food must be quite authentic. The menu reinforces that impression, it is beautifully printed with images with Chinese characters and odd English translations. The waiter and hostess were very helpful and I ordered the POT - they did warn me that it was for 2 people but I still had it and really enjoyed all the seafood and other things in the pot. I would really recommend this for the adventurous eater - I loved it. I think this is a newish identity for this restuarant on 4 Fawcett Street Sunderland. The decor looked new and the name is not the same as this place but same location.

The food tasted beautiful and large portions. I've not had a bad meal yet! 5th visit. They've shorten the menu since my last visit but still a great choice.

The service was a let down, menu wasn't great and hard to understand. Asking for help wasn't very helpful as the waitress didn't speak English very (I'm not English myself so believe me I'm not being racist here) the food was ok but I would not rush back any time soon.

I can't comment on the food as we left before ordering. Service was poor to that point, no offer of any drinks, the menu is a joke, worst I've ever seen, bits of labels stuck over things on about half the menu, some with illegible hand writing. We asked for help to pick something to start and were told only two starters were available. Surely not? Most Chinese restaurants are hugely accommodating. This one isn't. Avoid.

I live away from Sunderland now, but every time I come home I go to this restaurant with my family. We adore the food here, the portions are huge and the quality is top notch. The staff are friendly and kindly got us cutlery when it appeared that chop sticks just weren't going to cut it for us. It is always a pleasant visit to the Shanghai Manor.

I've been to this restaurant a few times now, and have never been left dissatisfied. The staff are lovely and the food is incredible! I particularly recommend the beef rice served in a bamboo shoot.. Beautiful! We full on sat in silence throughout this meal because we were concentrated on inhaling the food! Could not eat it quickly enough!

Over priced and the food didn't feel very fresh. Well my Malaysian friends were really excite about this restaurant but for me it didn't show any magic. I wouldn't waste my money and time in that restaurant again. They menu was hard to understand as well. The staffs weren't very friendly either.

My wife and I have dined many times at the Shanghai Manor. It is the best restaurant in Sunderland. There is a wide range of authentic Chinese food and the staff are excellent. We have eaten Chinese food throughout the UK and beyond, including China. The Shanghai Manor is "simply the best"!

Great location, reasonable price, wide range of authentic Chinese food, but careful sometimes the Chinese and English names of dishes don't match! Still one of the nicest Chinese restaurants in Sunderland City centre for eating out :)

One of the best Chinese meals our family have had. We absolutely loved it at the Shanghai Manor in Sunderland.. The staff were helpful and friendly. The service was quick and it was reasonably priced. The restaurant was starting to look a bit tired though, my only criticism. I would definitely recommend.

The food are as delicious as proper so called Chinese food! My husband and I were enjoyed sharing the three dishes and one soup between. The portions are pretty much and the staff provided some take away boxes and packed for us. We are definitely coming back again and again. The menu is available in both English and Chinese, plus pictures for each dishes, so you can easy to see what food you are expecting. We are strong recommend Shanghai Manor to someone who truly want to have proper Chinese food! Enjoy!!

Been today for the first time after walking past many times. Excelent food & service so much choice especially if you like offall dishes. It was empty when we went but it is mainly chinese people eat there but most students who frequent are away at the moment. Please try this place you will not be dissapointed all the menus are in english once inside. Great service. Beware the bowls are large dont mix this up with your normal takeaway one dish is enough for 2 ! then go home and have a nap !

I've been coming by this place many times, and never get in. I am not fan of asian cuisine. But few days ago I finally decided to give it a try. Me and my friend (both not Chinese) were a bit afraid, but staff is welcoming and nice. Menu is available in english, food portions are huge, prices very good! For 3 dishes (one to share) and including drinks we paid 21 pound!!! We asked for some take away boxes cause we couldnt have eaten all. Very good value for money. The only one disadvantage- you cant pay by card.

Just back home from travelling when I spotted this restaurant in Fawcett Street, Sunderland the fact that it seemed to be frequented mostly by probably Asian students was an advantage as far as I am concerned - whilst travelling in China and Hong Kong I am always wary of 'local restaurants' whose only customers are people who wouldn't recognise good Chinese food - normally tourists. This restaurant was reasonably decorated and had a decent menu - I ordered and then sat back enjoyed everything that was place before me. When I ordered the 'Hot and Sour' soup I maybe should have listened when the waiter warned me that it was a large portion so after three bowls of soup I had to admit defeat and leave room for the rest of the food. The Salt and Pepper pork strips were absolutely delicious. I have finally found a real quality Chinese restaurant in Sunderland and despite that it was also reasonably priced - I will be returning very soon.

A small Chinese restaurant located on Fawcett St in the City Centre. It looks more like a noodle bar than a restaurant though. Always busy with Chinese students popping in for dinner. Menu is not to bad and the food prices aren't to bad either. Drinks menu is crazy though. £2.20 for a can (YES A CAN) or 330ml Cola/Lemonade. And £95 for a bottle of Jack Daniels! Tap water isn't charged though.

Wow. What a find! The food here is absolutely fantastic. Fresh, authentic Chinese food in a lovely modern restaurant setting. You can go really adventurous or go for good old fashioned style Chinese. The restaurant is clean, the staff are very friendly. Well worth a visit. It's not cheap like other Chinese restaurants, but you do pay for quality.

Went here as restaurant we wanted to go was full. The menu is a bit confusing however we asked the waiter and he helped us well, Food was lovely good value and plenty of it we got two mains and rice which was plenty for us.I would like to go with some one who knew exactly what the menu said so i could try a few more dishes but otherwise surprisingly enjoyed the night. It is cash only but cash point next door.

Went on a Saturday night. Mainly Chinese customers, which is a good start. Friendly service and fresh, authentic dishes. Very good value. The bowl of hot and sour soup would serve three very well and stretch to four; one main course each is enough. Don't be tempted to order two main dishes each, as you might in some restaurants. Very interesting drinks lists. Cash only, but this is well advertised and there's a bank/cashpoint next door.

Excellent word of mouth led us to have lunch at the Shanghai Manor right in Sunderland's city centre.  The place was empty (we had expected it to be packed as it was a Bank Holiday) save for a table of Chinese students who stared at us from the moment we opened the door to the moment we sat down at a table.  Very off putting, but, hey, that's mainlanders for you... Anyway, the menu was nicely presented with both familiar and unfamiliar dishes available with a number of drinks you don't often see elsewhere. One of our party asked the waiter about one of the dishes (it helps if you have a Mandarin speaker with you) and all he could do was shrug his shoulders saying that he "didn't know".  There was no offer to go into the kitchen to find out or to ask his manager, very unprofessional, but we let it slide. We eventually ordered, with the help from a supervisor/manager, who recommended dishes and even told us which dishes not to order as they "weren't very good".  Unexpected, but helpful, hopefully the chef won't be reading this review, as his/her feelings could be hurt by that comment. Anyway, the food came and it was actually very, very nice.  It didn't match the hype that friends built up but it was good food.  The steamed rice with pork in bamboo was especially good, though more pork wouldn't have gone amiss, but there was plenty of steamed rice. The spicy chicken dishes we ordered were also good, but no different to say "Red Diner" or "Happiness Inn" in Newcastle upon Tyne.  What was a HUGE disappointment was the drink I ordered, lemon honey with jelly juice drink, which translated as "four slices of lemon with hot water and a slither of jelly for £2.20 (if I remember correctly)".  I suppose it was my fault for expecting something more exotic than Lemsip... Still, it's worth going if you live in Sunderland or very nearby, it certainly isn't worth a trip out if you live further afield.

Food was ordered at 19:34 and we were told that delivery would be an hour, food had not arrived by 21:13 and we’re told it was on its way when called back, food finally arrived at 21:30 and some of the order was missing, I was told it was never ordered so I agreed to go and collect it. Only to find the chicken omelette was only half cooked, I tried to ring 3 times but got no answer. I have kept and taken photos of the omelette and will be reporting this first thing tomorrow. This is the worst food ever
