Shanghai House in Milton Keynes

The rice Isn't exactly great as for the Sauce in the curry powder its thick and just fit for the bin, God knows why the food is cold when it arrives, I wont be using it no more.

Not been here for a takeaway since they changed hands a few years ago and to be honest we won’t be going back. We dished up the food and it went straight in the bin. Earthy soggy chips, dried out fried rice, awful looking chicken curry that smelt odd and crispy beef dish was so over cooked it as too hard to chew. AVOID!!!

First off, it was busy so that might have made a difference but I ordered a special chow mein and sweet n sour chicken. Had to wait about 20 mins but when I got home there was no sweet n sour sauce. It was too far to walk back so I wasn’t overly impressed. The chow mein was ok though.

Been a customer for over 20 years at Shanghi house sadly this will be our last time the the Shanghai house rice was greasy and had no flavour the chicken ball where cooked in burnt oil as the taste was horrible its such a shame when they change hands used to tall all my friend about this place sadly no more

Not a vert pleasant takeaway! Rice was brown and tasted old, very salty. The sweet and sour was gloopy and not very nice at all. This used to be our go to takeaway but won’t be coming back again.

You won’t be disappointed with this fab Chinese restaurant. Tucked away in the back of beyond it may be tricky to find the first time but well worth the trip. The restaurant only does takeaway food but I’ve never been disappointed and all the team are so very friendly it’s always nice to say hello.

Me and my wife only have Chinese from this shop foods fantastic staff very friendly would highly recommend this place we live in Beanhill there are Chinese shops closer but always go to this place

We have been here a few times and it seemed fine. We brought a meal this evening and it was absolutely awful. Firstly there was the most dreadful smell as you waited for the food. We had a couple of dishes and egg fried rice. All dishes were extremely greasy and lacked in flavour. Neither my husband or I could each much of the food and have not felt great since eating. Absolutely awful experience.

I came across Shanghai House for the first time today and was actually amazed by the food quality. Though they have a smaller food selection in comparison to other Chinese, I can say the food quality is definitely one of the best I have had. Oh, and the staffs were really friendly too, so that’s always a bonus! Will definitely come back!

I have been coming here for years. I dont eat chinese food, so I have a chicken omelette. Spot on every time

After many recommendations, finally got round to trying this take away. I was not disappointed. Food was delicious and plentiful, cooked freshly and delicious.We had enough to have it again the next day. Would definitely recommend. Try it, you won’t regret it

Great great food, one of the best chineses ive ever had. Pancake rolls exceptional. BUT, everytime we order by phone (and we have lived local for ten years plus so its not a one off) they lie about how long it will take. They say ten minutes, its always at least another twenty after you arrive. Im not sure if they actually wait and see if your going to turn up before cooking the food..... or if its because they dont know you personally, i have noticed the formaility is to go in and shout "aright John", perhaps this gets your food cooked quicker? Once again, this takeway suffers from people who have done ordering and paying for there food standing either directly in the door way, or lingering around the till so you think they are wating to order!

I have been going to this takeaway for over 25 years now. The food is generally good for takeaway chinese. But in the last year i feel it has slightly dropped its consistent standards, but dont get me wrong it is still a good chinese takeaway.Unforetunatley Paul is not there these days, who we have dealt with for years.Out of Chinese takeaways in Milton Keynes i have always felt this is the better one. Its a clean place and can get very busy!

Sad that this First class long established take away is going down hill very quickly since New owners taken over dishes seen watery and lack depth of flavour

We have been using Shanghai House for over 30 years. We would always drive from the other side of MK to go there. Unfortunately since the change of ownership things have deteriorated. Slow service & bland food. We won’t be returning ☹️

Have used Shanghai House for nearly 40 years and always found the food to be of an excellent quality, but recently have been very dissatisfied with the food. Quite bland, not as fresh as it should be and altogether disappointing. Don't think I will be returning.

Was a lovely place when Paul was there and his sister Now the food ain't as nice and won't be going back

Used to be great and worth the trip to drive those extra few miles to get there but it’s sadly gone downhill; meat quality is still good but the sauces are not very authentic, bland and tasteless. Since when did beef satay consist of slices of beef with some peanut pieces in a glupey (cornflour syrup I guess) light coloured sauce? Fried rice contains no egg but is salty and brown so I guess they are using soya sauce to flavour it. Such a shame it’s not what it was.

This was my favourite Chinese takeaway but it has rapidly gone downhill over the last few months. The service has been so slow, the food was cold and bland. It’s a shame to say I won’t be going back anymore.

When I lived in West Bletchley I alway used shanghai house for my chinese take away I loved it . I have gone back tonight after 15 years and it is not the same. I had to chuck some of it in the bin. Really disappointed . Hope it gets better.

We ordered takeaway from here tonight as a family treat. I rang at 6pm and was told it would be ready at 7.20pm. It wasnt. It was 40 minutes late at which point we were told they had run out of chicken balls. No offer of a different dish and no prior warning. When we got home to eat, the food was all fairly bland - bbq ribs did not have bbq sauce, beef with bamboo & water chestnuts tasteless and cold hoisin sauce. Their website advertises all major credit cards but they only take cash. Not cheap and very disappointing. We won't be going there again!

An excellent Take-away very popular so phone in your order and ask how long till pick-up. The special rice is a meal in itself but I have not had a disappointing dish. The sweet and sour chicken balls are fantastic. Every dish is tasty and different form each other, portion sizes good and a meal for 3 IS a meal for 3 at least/. Well worth a visit.

this place really gone down hill in past few months, cold meals served on 2 occasions told them but laughed not funny stopped going after 35 loyal custom Very disappointed

Service is great 10/10. Food is great probably best in Milton Keynes 9/10. Received a free bottle of soy sauce. Can't complain. Highly recommended!

You know how good Shanghai is as they do NOT deliver and if you time it wrong you can be queuing round the shop and out the door. But they do serve promptly and efficiently.

Comimos desde aquí unas 6 veces al año para un regalo especial y estamos nunca decepcionó. Siempre nos dan una buena mezcla de comida y pagar 50 libras/60 cada vez y toda la comida siempre es deliciosa.

La primera vez que comimos en Casa de shanghai, la comida no es apta para el consumo humano no le daría a un perro. Fue la peor comida china que he probado debe ser cerrada, y para aquellos que son comer allí semanal dumbed abajo y no sé lo que es la verdadera comida comida horrible.

Fuimos con una bolsa dividida que el dueño nos dio 5 minutos después nos sirvieron, todo lo que él podía hacer era reír y decir que no fue su culpa y le echó la culpa a mí. No recomendaría este hotel a cualquiera.

We went here as we were passing by, we wished we didn't, we ordered chicken chow mien nothing to technical chicken satay and fried crispy beef, well when we got home it was swimming in grease, the satay chicken tasted gross, crispy beef well that was soggy very chewy, we tried a couple more mouthfuls, but to be honest when your body is telling you something is not right, we decided it was fit for the bin. I should of been more alarmed that it was rather quick service,Please don't order from here unless you like grease soaked food.Will never go there again I will stick to my local in future it was only as we were passing we decided to try it with much regret

We regularly have a take away from this place, I would rate this as the best takeaway in Milton Keynes, paul and his family are producing great food that's tasty and good value for money, give it a go

I don't like Chinese as a rule only Thai food, I find Thai food fresh and contains great flavours. When I was recommended to try this take away, it changed my thinking. Wow they are so good. The food has flavour and cooked to perfection. I go there all the time now. I have recommended it to my friends on most Fridays nights they are at the counter lol

Every Christmas Eve it's traditional in our family that we have a Chinese takeaway for dinner. My mum has recommended Shanghai House to me for some time now so we phoned and pre ordered. We got there a little early so had to wait for it but we were amazed with the huge queue right down the road. Thought to myself "this place must be amazing" We got it home and tucked in, it was definitely 100% better than your average Chinese. The queues are worth it for that quality. Having read all the reviews I decided to try this takeaway as I was in Bletchley on a Friday evening. It was dark, raining hard, cold and windy so I made my first mistake of parking in the dead-end cul-de-sac near the takeaway. Driving out was tricky with bad visibility and no ability to turn, so you have to reverse a long way to get turned.There was a long queue inside and it was packed with people waiting to pick up their food. This was definitely a good sign I thought. From entering to receiving food the wait was over 30 minutes. They were very busy inside and the phone was constantly ringing. They only took cash and not even a debit card so luckily I had £40 to hand. Service was polite and friendly and they even gave a free bottle of cheap wine and a bag of prawn crackers.I would say the food was all good but not necessarily the best in Milton Keynes. I have had better but also much worse so I can only give an average rating. Prices seemed cheaper than elsewhere but portion sizes were smaller on some dishes.A good tasting takeaway if living close by but not worth travelling the breadth of MK especially with the limited parking and only accepting cash. I would definitely use this takeaway if more local and as others have said, the food is very good but overall, and having tried many others in MK, I can only rate as average.

This place is always amazing . I have tried almost every Chinese in mk and nothing compares . The crispy chilli beef is the best I have ever had by a mile ! And the rice stick is sooooo good . I would travel a huge distance to come here. They don't deliver but they don't need to as people will always travel to a place this good

At first glance, this appears to be a very modest Chinese takeaway in the heart of Bletchley.Without putting too much gush into this review, I was blown away by the food and its quality. I've now had an opportunity to eat here three or four times and can only say that I have never been disappointed in the quality and variation from the menu.If that wasn't enough, these guys have an amazing knack of remembering peoples names and offering modest yet incredible customer service; they even threw in some sweets for my kids!So, if you are looking for inexpensive yet high-quality Chinese takeaway in Bletchley then look no further.

Have lived in Bletchley for 30 years and the food here has always been consistently good. Parking and waiting is a problem at busy times but if the food were poor then this wouldn't be a problem.

This food is delicious and the service is great. They get very busy and take cash only, but it is worth travelling to get your Chinese from Shanghai House, known locally as 'St. Mary's'.

Getting to the address is really easy,signed St. Marys Avenue,(local shops),follow road to the bottom it`s on the left side, parking bays out in front.Service was fast, efficient ,friendly,pre-ordered food over the phone, (the server gave advice on a dish`s ingredients before order was placed when asked as well) ,down side is the take away only takes cash payments, but there is a FREE cash machine across the road,food was piping hot on arrival back home too, generous portions,and very, very well prepared and tasty too,will definitely be going back for more,highly recommend

We travel there every time we have a Chinese we won't go anywhere else as we know that we only get disappointed, so friendly. Pity they don't deliver

Like many of Paul's and Jimmy's customers, we once lived locally, then moved a fair distance away, but continue to travel across Milton Keynes to buy our takeaways from them. The quality and variety of the food has been consistently good for more than 30 years. Yes, the parking is a pain, but worth the effort and minor inconvenience. It's the food that counts after all. Keep it coming guys.

Service a Bit slow, they don't take card payments. Food about average, parking very difficult. Not very convenient.

I know I cant really say this.. but ive been travelling recently and tried Chinese food in alot of new places and I pray ill find something as yummy as Shanghai House.. but I haven't yet! Cant wait to get back to MK to have my Chinese meal! :)

Parking outside this take away at the weekend on this housing estate is not great. You are given friendly enough welcome once inside but to be honest the food is consistently disappointing once you get it home. I always judge a good or even average Chinese take away by the quality of the rice as it is the most simple thing to get right. Verdict along with other dishes served didn't make me want more. I could be generous and say that the food is average but honestly "its not the best"

I have been eating here on and off for about 15 years and have a always got food from here for visitors to mm. All I can say is the quality has gone downhill. The younger staff are quite abrupt, I tried to repeat my order and was rudely told he had got it. When we got home items were missing..I am not sure if I paid for them or not. The chow mein noodles didn't seem that fresh and the beef was chewy. Overall I felt embarrassed to tell visitors to expect a treat and that's what we got served. Will stick to Sam's at peartree bridge from now on

Me and my family have been using this takeaway for year and never had a bad meal very friendly staff and I wish they delivered as I live about 5 miles away but it don't stop me from going to collect it I love the food so much

Always tip top food travel from pretty much anywhere in mk to use this take away may have to wait for food some nights but that's because it so popular it's well worth the travelling and the wait never disappoints. Well done Shanghai House.

Always busy, been around for years, they don't take debit/credit cards, only cash. whenever we go to get a takeaway its always busy, food is nice and clean, there is a chip shop over the road, so if we want chips to go with our meal we will go over to chip shop and buy a bag for £1.50, rather than paying the £2.80 at the chinese takeaway. other than that i find the prices a little higher than other takeaways, but the quality is much better

I've been going to the Shanghai House literally since I was a kid and lived in Bletchley. When I was growing up I thought all Chinese takeaways were like this - they really aren't!The owner, Paul, and his family do an outstanding job in every sense of the word. Every dish is superb - and I've tasted a lot of their food! Now I am 40 I have converted my husband (an expert on Chinese food) and it is his favourite too.There is an excellent veggie menu and if the mood takes you, then their chips are wonderful. Be warned - the queue on a Friday and Saturday night will be out the door and down the road, so get there early.

There is no other chinese I've ever had that has even come close to challenging Shanghai House as the best chinese ever, has to be tasted to be believed :)

Why do people Que for up to an hour to get a takeaway, answer, because this is the best Chinese takeaway in MK, the food is well priced and as you see from the reviews, there isnt any poor ones or bad one etc etc. I am always surprised that even mid week its packed, I just maybe turning up at the wrong time but the wait is worth it, tasty hot food is all anyone wants and this is everything and more.

Restaurant is the wrong word it’s a take-away. We booked our meal by telephone and paid for it on arrival. Be warned, its cash only due to bouncing cheques etc. The selection of food as in all Chinese restaurants is exceptional. However, as well all know, the quality of food varies from one restaurant to the next. Rest assured this restaurant provides the best Chinese in Milton Keynes. Yes there are other good ones but I think they don’t try. This one, due to its peculiar location has to deliver and my goodness it does. I was impressed by the number of people who came through the door and that the owner knew them all. That tells you a lot; repeat customers tell you that the quality is consistently high. Do yourself a favour and treat yourself to a takeaway from here; you will not be disappointed.

cant really write much apart from you just need to come to this Chinese and you wont regret it . Brilliant service from staff and amazing menu. Nothing is ever greasy and the food is always full of flavour and excellent value for money. We have moved and still phone through our orders now have tried others but nothing beats this !!be aware they close on Mondays and Friday and Saturday evenings you will have to wait as so busy !!

It's not a place you are going to stumble on but if you live in the area or passing by it's a solid option. Staff are friendly and efficient. On a busy Saturday night there was a bit of a wait but they were well organised and throughput was good. We had 3 dishes and some noodles. The only disappointment was the chicken and sweet corn. The rest of the food was excellent. Beware it's in a cul-de-sac and parking a little tricky.

This is a perfect takeaway - extensive menu -which they are willing to help with (i.e is it possible to remove the nuts?!) great food and FAST service nothing to complain about!!

I loved my first ever meal here.It's not on the main road but it's worth the trip. The portion size is just right and the value is great. Would definitely recommend getting Chinese from here.

A great tasting authentic Chinese takeaway. Every time I visit on a Friday or Saturday people are queuing to order. I couldn't recommend this Chinese anymore! It is the BEST! Just a shame they don't do delivery.

This Chinese does not deliver take aways which is a shame BUT then it doesn't have to because it is so popular. As far as I recall it was operating in Bletchley even before Milton Keynes was 'invented'. The food is absolutely PERFECT - every single dish. At good prices and good2great size portions and staff are so friendly and welcoming.I LOVE IT :-).100/100 all around

This Chinese takeaway was recommended to me by a work colleague. So I tried it out and couldn't believe how tasty the food was and more importantly the quality of the chicken was exceptionally good as it was all chicken breast and not the brown chicken meat, which I'm not find of. The rice was very good as well and the prawn crackers are of a higher standard than some sit down restaurants. Give it a go I do not think you'll be disappointed.

My family and I have had Chinese takeaway from Shanghai House for over 20 years and we cannot find anywhere else that even comes close in terms of quality Chinese food. We have tried others and they are always disappointing. The food at Shanghai House is excellent quality and service is friendly and efficient. Highly recommended.

My family have been ordering from Shanghai House for decades and, although I've moved away from Bletchley, I still keep coming back to Shanghai House as it's definitely the best Chinese takeaway in MK.They've also got an excellent range of vegetarian dishes, with "pretend" alternatives for chicken, beef and prawns (I think).
